The bottom line is the flu is, in fact, more to worry about than this, but there is extra concern because there has been more children hospitalized because of this, especially those with asthma who are stephanie, we seem to have lost your microphone. I know youre at this press conference and theres a great deal of things happening. Well talk about this very briefly and see if we can get stephanie back in the meantime. Enterovirus, as stephanie points out, not as dangerous overall as the flu. We often forget with all the talk about ebola, that the flu is the biggest killer in the united states. Stephanie, i think youve got your no, she has not quite gotten it solved. This was a press conference this morning in oakland with Health Officials. Now Health Officials were very specific they were going to talk about mostly about prevention and not the specific cases. Lets go back now to stephanie chuang, you have your trouble worked out there. Stephanie, give us the very latest. Reporter scott, thank you. The experts really talking about the worry is this enterovirus d68 has had clusters reported in colorado, where kids have tested positive for this, four out of nine cases, and these kids have had neurological issues, acute weak limb problems, as well as possible paralysis, so thats why theres a lot at question about what this enterovirus is. Although Health Officials did tell us here in alameda county, no reported deaths from this, so that is very important to note. Usually what happens is kids will have trouble breathing, go to the hospital to get help with oxygen, but another concern is this doesnt present a higher fever, so there are a lot of questions about this. There are 500 Lab Confirmed cases in at least 32 states and here in alameda county, Health Officials say parents shouldnt be more alarmed than if we were talking about any other virus. Im sending my kids to school, they are at school today, and, again, its one of many viruses that circulate. There are more viruses that cause more illness every year, so were learning more about this one. Its been around for many decades, but we occasionally see these larger clusters, and again this time around seems there have been clusters of more severe illness. Reporter there is a time lag to see if someone has enterovirus. The hospital sends tests to the state, which takes another three weeks to confirm. Health officials do expect to see an increase in the number of reported cases. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine, nor antiviral treatment. Again, the point is, the start of flu season, everyone is supposed to be taking more note of being careful, stay home when youre ill, you know, cover your cough with your elbow, not in your hand, and also use hand or wash your hands with soap and water, its better than a hand sanitizer. But to wrap it up, enterovirus d68 in the bay area now. They dont want people to be too alarmed, but just be careful. Live in oakland in alameda county, stephanie chuang, nbc bay area news. Thank you, stephanie. I want to make sure people understand, my understanding as a parent, treat this a bit like a bad cold. It spreads the same way, right, high cuss, nasal, sneezing. Reporter exactly, scott. The same kind of symptoms, except very similar to common cold, as you said. The concern is, of course, it spreads quite easily and thats why they have this emphasis on, you know, coughing into your elbows, your arm like this as opposed to into your hand. They are hoping to curb this, of course, but they expect the numbers to be increasing because of the lag it takes to test for enterovirus. Stephanie chuang, thank you. We are also following another developing story that now has two cities on edge. A patient at a hospital in honolulu is being kept in isolation while doctors monitor the person for symptoms of ebola. Doctors say the patients history does not appear to be consistent with ebola, but they are taking extra precautionary measures just in case. Its unclear if the person has been to africa recently or exposed to the ebola virus. There is more information now on the first patient to be diagnosed with ebola in the u. S. Thomas duncan has been receiving care in dallas since arriving from liberia. The family says he is feeling stronger, but he may have been better and the public safer if the hospital had taken his case more seriously when he first came to them. Nbcs jay gray is live in dallas this morning with more. Good morning, jay. Reporter good morning, laura, great to talk with you. Look, there has been around the clock treatment for duncan in an Isolation Unit at this dallas hospital since he was admitted. Thats while other teams are on the ground searching for anyone who may have had contact with duncan before he came to the hospital. State and county Health Officials have ordered four immediate family members of ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan to remain locked down in their dallas apartment with no visitors until at least october 19th. We take every threat to the citizens of Dallas County seriously. This is no different. Reporter doctors say their decision was made out of an abundance of caution and at this point none of the family members have symptoms of the disease. Today, students at a Dallas Elementary School that one of the family members attended are getting back to class. Just prayed about it, go about our day and just, you know, thats all we can do. Reporter his uncle is in severe pain, but sounding stronger each day. Hes a fighter. Hes still fighting. Reporter still, he worries about the medical team at Texas Health Presbyterian hospital that initially sent duncan home with antibiotics, concerned the facility wasnt taking the disease seriously. Called cdc for actions taken because i was concerned for his life and he wasnt getting the appropriate care and i feared that other people might, you know, also get infected if he wasnt taken care of. Reporter to this point, officials have identified as many as 18 people duncan may have had direct contact with once he was showing symptoms of the disease. The only close contact that were aware of, of this patient was with his immediate children. And his wife. And so now were looking at close friends. Reporter as they search now for every way possible to prevent the deadly virus from spreading. Yeah, there are a lot of numbers swirling around this case. Lets get to some of the very latest, Dallas CountyHealth Department says there are now 100 people that may have come into contact with duncan, but that stresses doesnt mean direct or close contact and he didnt have symptoms of ebola at the time. Jay gray, nbc bay area news. Thank you, jay. It is round two of the heat wave gripping the bay area and bumblebees, as well, this time. Triple digit temperatures headed to parts of the south bay. Meteorologist Christina Loren has been warning us all week about this. I just had a gas fireplace installed, had to run my air conditioner to try it out. Well, sure. You are a good consumer, yeah. A south Bay Community gathering right now to say goodbye to the late San Jose Police chief who passed away last month. A Memorial Service taking place for the man who led the Police Department for 15 years. Nbc bay areas bob redell in san jose this morning. Good morning, bob. Reporter good morning to you, scott. Were just over an hour now into this Memorial Service taking place behind me here in downtown san jose. Inside youve got a good group of people, about 500 people, including family, mayor, city council members, and law enforcement, of course, paying tribute to the former chief, joseph mcnamara. The five men who succeeded him are also in attendance, taking a moment to publicly acknowledge the man who did so much for the department. Calling him, quote, a true pioneer in law enforcement. Mcnamara is credited with modernizing the San Jose Police department by putting computers in patrol cars, pioneering the use of crime data to figure out where best to place his officers. He diversified the department by hiring more men and women and minorities and helped mend the poor relationship that existed between the department and people it served. Those are two things he did, figure out how to connect to the community and a relationship that helped us Work Together and use our resources more wisely. That really was cutting edge. He was doing Community Policing back in the 70s, long before it became kind of the cool thing to do across the country. Reporter chief mcnamara retired from the department in 91, from then on worked at the Hoover Institution at stanford, where he advocated for gun control and spoke out about the war on drugs. In 2010, he threw his support behind a bill that would legalize marijuana in the state of california. He died of pancreatic cancer september 19th at his home in carmel. The clue elon musk revealed to keep people on the edge of their seats. And their best apparently not good enough. San jose fire improved medical response times, but the boss is still not happy. Medical response times in san jose still not up to standard. Its a story weve been following for months. The Fire Departments response has continued to breach its contract with Santa Clara County. Nbc bay area has the latest numbers. Reporter the san jose Fire Departments medical Emergency Response still not good enough. That, according to a new report given to the city council, the departments contract with the county requires them to respond to medical calls in less than eight minutes 90 of the time, but the report shows that that was met just three out of the past 12 months. Numbers from a Third Party Audit show improvements in april, june, and july, but it still doesnt meet the contractual requirements. Havent been able to solve the problem. Reporter county supervisor and mayoral candidate dave cortese says the problem has continued for two years. In february, the board of supervisors voted to withhold money from the department until it met the standards for three consecutive months. I think the board had no choice but to hold that money back as an incentive for san jose to get their act together. The citizens of san jose are calling 911 and no one is responding in a timely manner. Reporter Jose Guerrero is the Vice President of the local 230 Firefighters Union and says low Staffing Levels and shuttered fire stations are to blame. He says until the city pays competitive wages to keep the firefighters, it wont happen. Its very difficult to comply with response times when we dont have the boots on the ground that we need. Reporter the county has continued to withhold funding after these new numbers were released. Cortese says that could change if it would help. Im confident the board will want to take another look at it based on this report and figure out what kind of next steps we should take. Reporter in san jose, ian cole, nbc bay area news. It is the sixth annual Pink Hard Hat Campaign to bring awareness to Breast Cancer protection and screening. They are having six pink ribbon events across the month. October, of course, is Breast Cancer awareness month. Lets check in this morning with a very hot forecast and Christina Loren. Good morning. Good morning. You know, its fall. This is the time of year we want to tell you about rain and cool weather so you can break out your snuggy, hoodie, scarves, whatever it is you like to wear in the fall. Unfortunately, today is not a great day for that gear. The temperatures are hot. Youre actually looking at numbers that are very much so on par with our averages for this time of year as far as highs go, and we havent even hit noon just yet. Look at Half Moon Bay, 84 degrees. Were at 76 in San Francisco. Temperatures are going to be really hot, nowhere to escape the heat, but you will get cooler readings at the coast for today. A minor marine influence. Heres the story, clouds arc up and around the High Pressure, pumping from land to sea, warming up on the way. As a result for us, thats going to be kind of dangerous when it comes to fire weather for today. Heres the thing, the wind isnt going to increase all that much. We could see gusts up to 15 miles per hour, sustained five to ten, but because its so dry, we could see a fire weather watch go up. Right now thats not the case, but as we continue to see the marine influence negated for tomorrow, the chance is certainly there. So my advice to you would be, just be on the best of fire safety, really not great out there to have a barbecue, kind of too hot for that anyhow, but if you are going to have one, dont leave until the fire is completely extinguished. At this point, ocean beach is nice and clear. Good looking temperatures coming in, going to be hot out there, but not too bad. This might be our last hoorah to get out there with heat like this at our beaches. 89 degrees for San Francisco. 93 for the peninsula, and 95 in the south bay, where that bug wont go away. He keeps hanging out today. Hes probably looking for said. You might want to do the same thing, as well, as we get into the next couple days. Look at this, 105 for gilroy tomorrow. 98 degrees in los altos. The Mission District at 92. The deal with this is, if we hit levels like this, and i believe we will, it will officially make it the hottest air in the bay area since 2012. Good news is, temperatures are going to start to drop off, the heat will break sunday into monday and you can see the temperature trend via the trivalley where we hit 100 tomorrow, 96 by saturday, 92 degrees by sunday. Average is 82, and well fall right back to average not until tuesday. Images from the schools Security Camera are part of the Santa Clara County court record. One shows stampolis appearing to make a motion to simulate shooting a gun with his hand on campus. Accusations are alarming. Were about teaching and learning and keeping kids safe and not having to deal with Board Members not following the rules. If anything, they should be held with a higher standard. Reporter stampolis denies the claim. He says he treats everyone fairly, so did he harass harris . Absolutely not. And i think even if you look at her allegations, all of the photos that she submitted dont have her in them. Theyve only got me. Theres no picture of my being submitted to the judge that has the two of us together. Reporter its not the first time stampolis has been at the center of controversy. Thats the question scientists have set out to answer in san jose after discovering dead fish in the river. In a story youll only see on nbc bay area, Damian Trujillo joins scientists as they looked for clues. Reporter the Water District calls out a hazmat team to look into the death of the fish, but as it turns out, it seems the weather had a lot to do with what happened here and the recent storms may have contributed to the death of the fish. They swim downstream in dark waters made murky by last weeks storm. But not far from them, this is what youll find, dead fish on a dry river bed, carp, largemouthed bass, and a native fish called sacramento suckers. Its very sad. I dont know what can we do . Reporter after nbc bay area called the valley Water District, they brought out a team of experts to see whats causing the deaths. After studying the river bed, biologist jay able says hes seen this quite a bit and he blames the drought. The water table drops, the pools will shrink. Reporter able says last weeks storm may have contributed to the death, thats when temporary pools formed on the guadalupe from street runoff water, which sometimes contains contaminates. That can stir fish up to move around and then they just get stuck as the creek went back down to its intermittent condition. Its just sad. So incredibly sad that its filthy, everythings dying. We keep wondering where all the birds are going. Its sad. I hope we get three months of rain. Reporter Water District says there might be a day when the guadalupe runs dry downstream, as well, but jay able feels it might not be wise to relocate the remaining fish because theres simply nowhere to put them. It might be a case where you simply let nature take its course. Some folks might ask why doesnt the Water District do something about whats happening here, but folks can also do something at home with that 20 water use reduction. Right now we are still at 11 . Really, throughout the day today, High Pressure firmly in control, packing even more energy. Throughout tomorrow, bringing the temperature up even more so, but after that, its a steady decline. They had to bring both window washers up and this is video of the rescue that happened. Now the firefighter is being brought up. All is well in oakland. 11th and broadway is closed. Doing it with style, hes walking up. Much more than a protest, it was a spirit that captured the countrys attention. It happened 50 years ago yesterday on the cal campus. You may recall, if youve been around that long, students set up tables in support of racial equality. What happened next no one could have predicted, but it certainly changed this country. Nbc bay areas diane dwyer has more of our series the Free Speech Movement. And so at noon several of our groups, including our core group, set up tables with information, literature, violating the rules. I had the good fortune of being the person they came to first. Jack was sitting at the core table and he refused to identify himself when the deans asked for his registration, and they made the incredible decision to bring a cop car on to the center of the plaza at the noon hour, and i mean, how anybody could be that stupid, i dont know. I was right in front of the car. I was by the right fender on the drivers side and i heard somebody shout, sit down. By the time i got put in the police car, people were sitting down on all sides of it, and there i sat for the next 32 hours. By most accounts, it was 21yearold mario savio, who in a sports jacket, collared shirt, and slacks, first found his place in history by taking off his shoes and climbing on to the police car. The symbolism is striking, protest over power. The symbol of authority, the police car, became a symbol of a protest, became a symbol because you see it was surrounded by protesters. The authority was emasculated. And we took our shoes off, we had all taken our shoes off because we didnt want to damage the car, and stood on top of it. And pretty soon, within an hour or two, there was a sound, there was a microphone on top of the police car and a big sound system and there was anybody who wanted to speak could sign up. And i was right in the middle of it. I mean, it was just thrilling. And then that night was the first time id ever made a speech, public speech, and it was from on top of the police car. I remember quoting frederick douglas, the great abolitionist, who said that power conceives nothing without a demand. I remember that i quoted that and the crowd roared back its affirmation. Reporter by friday night, october 2nd, some 30 hours after the sitin had started, the pressure was mounting. The next day was parents day. It could not have been worse timing for the university and better timing for the protesters. When night drew and people were negotiating, and we were scared, i mean, there was they had assembled all these police from all around and wed been told to take off wristwatches and earrings and stuff so that they couldnt pull on those. It was very scary. Most of the people involved were not hardened political, you know, sophisticates. Many people it was the first demonstration theyd ever been involved in. I remember mario racing towards the car. We could all see him coming, waving a piece of paper, and getting up on top of the car, taking his shoes off, getting on top of the car and saying that we had reached an agreement and enumerating what it was and urging us to accept the agreement by acclimation and to quietly disperse. And we did. Reporter after that, savio became the prominent leader of the united front of groups movement that was soon to have a new name. And over that weekend, the united front of groups met and realized that we had a struggle ahead of us and sort of developed a more formal organizational structure and came up with a name, and that was the Free Speech Movement. So the Free Speech Movement was formed that weekend. It captured something that appeals to every american, free speech. There was a sense of a new day dawning. Reporter mario savio said on that day, although the war is far from over, we have won the biggest battle, the battle to gain recognition from the university. But that sense of a new day faded as the agreement with the university quickly fell apart. In berkley, diane dwyer, nbc bay area news.
