It to us, its a war zone out here. And you can see why. Youre looking at northbound 17. It is littered with the debris and the wreckage from the ten vehicles involved in this horrible accident that, as you mentioned, has killed one driver, sent eight more people to the hospital. And the cause of this accident is that big rig right there in the foreground, which you can see, with its engine exposed. The driver, who was not hurt, confirmed to me offcamera that he did lose his brakes when he was traveling down 17 into los gatos before 8 00 with two trailers of dirt full behind him. In other words, a very heavy load. What happened next is awful, according to witnesses and chp. One driver told us he passed that big rig two miles back and could smell the brakes. And when he got to the bottom of the hill, he saw the big rig careening down the hill out of control, trying to weave through the morning commute traffic. He estimates was moving at 15 to 20 miles an hour. This witness believes the truck was going around 45 to 50 miles an hour. At this point, the back trailer just started, just started jack knifing. He literally missed my car by 2 feet. And then he ended up slipping this one he pushed the green one over, the little blue one right there, and then there was just carnage. I mean, i saw cars there and the trailer broke loose. I mean, it was just like out of a movie, just surreal. Reporter the big rig crushed one car, that the car became unrecognizable. All we know is that it was a honda. And thats just based on its hub caps. Thats the car in which a driver was killed. Eight other people then taken to the hospital. One with major injuries. Chp has not confirmed yet why the big rig lost control. They are bringing out their investigation team. They bring them out when theres big accidents like this, so they still have a long ways to come down with a definitive cause. And they also believe it will be another seven to eight hours before northbound lane 17 is cleared. At some point, they will be splitting the opposite direction, the southbound lanes, on southbound 17 with cones so traffic can travel in both directions. As for that driver, he appears to be cooperating with chp and based on our brief encounter with him, he seems to be very upset about what happened here this morning. Again, one person dead, eight people sent to the hospital, one with major injuries after that big rig behind me lost control during the morning commute. Reporting live here in the Santa Cruz County mountains area, bob redell, nbc bay area news. So scary. All right, bob. Lets continue our coverage. Lets bring in mike inouye in our traffic center. Although theyre going the other way, this is another look aerial from the situation. You can see the truck there, even though theyre going the other way, people going towards santa cruz are going to face huge delays. Thats true, scott. We talked about this. Lets go into this as best we can. You see these cones right above my head. Thats the southbound side, where one lane is blocked. And thats affecting our viewers on this side of the summit. On the other side of the summit, another viewer is watching another station in a different market, but we will talk about this huge crash. The rig itself, demolished, and a number of other vehicles going on. Theres the southbound side with one lane opened and the northbound lane, both sides are closed. So is this frontage road. Look at all of our crews, including bob redell, saying as many as eight hours more until the northbound side is closed. Once they reopen this second southbound lane, theyll start to ship traffic and allow one lane to go northbound, and one lane to go southbound. Lets talk about traffic flow right now. Well get you oriented and look at our maps. Looking at the coast, this is highway 1, highway 17, highway 9. Thats coming from the santa cruz side, traveling northbound on 17. Thats where the closure and crash are. This is south of bear creek road. For others, just north of the summit, traffic is jammed up and closed in many places. Can i get on to the freeway in highway 17 . And at one point, theyre turning everybody around. And traffic is slowing for some folks. You can get off of the roadway and take summit road that winds back and forth. Thats a winding, slow drive. Now, if youre coming southbound, youre watching us right now and heading down toward the summit and the santa cruz side, heres the deal. You can take bear creek over toward summit road and that will get you back over to the roadway, south of all of this activity, but a lot of people are taking that, so it is a windy road, be patient for that. You also have one of your southbound lanes that is open, taking you over towards the beach and the summit. Slow going, but you can take that as well. If you choose to take highway 9, thats a really circuitous route. Its called highway 9, but look how far you have to go around, all the way. And some of these folks, highway 9, a big workaround. 101 over here takes you all the way out here. You have to take 156. There are alternates around the area, but they are a long ways out of your way and a lot more time. Again, many more hours. But the rest of your south bay north of highway 17 and 85 is moving smoothly and thats the bulk of our viewers in that morning commute. Investigators say it started near a homeless camp. It is becoming an alltoofamiliar sight for People Living in this san jose neighborhood. Flames and smoke coming from the nearby woods. Three separate fires, youre looking at them here, all in the same place, in a matter of 11 days. They all broke out near los lagos golf course off of capital expressway just west of highway 101. Todays fire burned 2,100 square feet of heavy dry brush and grass in that creek bed. Firefighters had to drag about 2,600 feet of hose to douse the fire. When they got to the sight, they found piles of copper wire casings, garbage, and a man in a tent who refused to leave. There are homeless encampments in the area. The cause is under investigation. But it could be that the fire got away from the camp. That battalion chief says that the department chief is advising the city council on the frequency on which the department is fighting fires likely started because of homeless encampments. Happening right now, fans starting to pile into at t park for this afternoons game between the as and the giants. And as they show up, they may be learning of a possible new dress code. Good morning to you, scott. This is a casebycase kind of scenario. Nothing is banned, per se. But the gates just opened about 20 minutes ago and fans starting to trickle in. The giants just want to be very clear about something. If you come to one of these games and wear or Say Something culturally ininsensitive, you could be asked to leave. This stems from an incident that happened at the native American Heritage night back on june 23rd. Take a look at this cell phone video recorded that night by someone called kimball big horse of his friend getting forcibly detained by Police Officers. On her facebook, a native american, explained how she noticed a man wearing a headdress, and she asked him to take it off. He gave it to her, but then called security who told her to give it back. When she wouldnt, she and her friend were cuffed and forced to leave. Now, any fan wearing culturally insensitive attire, using obscene or abusive language, engaging in antisocial conduct offensive to those around them or displaying any other offensei behavior is subject to removal from the ballpark. The giants want to use this as a way to educate the public on cultural sensitivity. Fans we spoke with says they like the idea, just not at the ballpark. We want everyone to come here and feel welcome and celebrate their diversity and to be able to, you know, learn about other cultures. And thats why we have heritage night. The world is becoming too politically, you know, either incorrect or correct. I dont know. But, yeah, its an interesting balance. The rules and regulations are taking the fun out of sports and things you do, you know . Its getting ridiculous, to where, you know, a certain few people ruin it for everybody. Because those rules have to be made. Reporter and after the incident at native American Heritage night, several people protested in front of at t last tuesday. The same day the giants met with those two people who were kicked out and began the discussion of expanding the code of conduct. The point is, they dont want fans to take matters into their own hands. That they can text security anonymously if something happens. All right, stephanie, thank you. Now to a developing story in the middle east. The Israeli Army Says it has hit 800 targets since the start of an operation against hamas in the gaza strip. More than 81 palestinians have been killed, including 14 women and 22 children. Meanwhile, hundreds of rockets have been fired from the gaza strip towards israel. Nbcs Martin Fletcher joins us from tel aviv, where once again air raid sirens warned of rocket fire again. Reporter the israelis saying they are targeting terrorist tunnels along sites of the iraqis, but there was also tragedy last night in gaza. Bun rocket hit a palestinian home. Eight members of one family killed while they were sleeping, including five children. A couple of hours before that, at a beach camp in gaza, a group of people were watching the world cup soccer game, when they were hit by an israeli rocket. It isnt clear what the israelis were targeting, but they say they have been, as i said before, targeting the tunnels, but theyre also attacking the homes of hamas military leaders, sometimes sending warnings to the residents. In those two cases, tragedy occurred among civilians. This morning, there have been many rocket attacks by palestinians at israeli centers. Here in tel aviv, at least three times, residents were sent running for their lives to the bomb shelters, escaping from those rockets. But those rockets were intercepted in the sky by israel antirocket facility. So far in the last hundred days, no israeli casualties and almost to damage because of the iron dome system. In less than an hour, dozens of pot shops in san jose will band together in protest. Come next friday, more than 70 cannabis clubs will be forced to shut their doors because of new city restrictions. So at noon today, these clubs will gather in front of San Jose City hall to fight back. And they are encouraging the community to join in their fight. The clubs are offering a voucher for a free medical marijuana evaluation to the first 1,000 people who show up. People who qualify will get a free pot card. Were passing it out to san jose residents and theres nothing wrong with passing out coupons. Organizers are also encouraging marijuana supporters to continue signing petitions for a referendum allowing the clubs to stay in business. Now to Investigative Unit exclusive, from accidents to speeding violations, the Investigative Unit goes undercover to look for the driving records of bay area cab drivers. Riding in a dozen cabs in just one day, the unit found only 2 of the 12 cabbies had clean driving records. One driver even had nine citations in the last year and a half. Three of those were for speeding. The San FranciscoMunicipal Transportation Agency oversees taxis in the city. The agency says it regularly receives taxi drivers taxi records from the dmv and can suspend a drivers permit. As policy, if someone has nine citations, three of which were for speeding, should they be behind the wheel . I think we would have to look at every situation. And yes, if its a matter of Public Safety and thats a concern. Tonight, the Investigative Unit reveals dozens more violations, even found a sex offender behind the wheel of a cab.
