Leapt to the second story. The darkened windows at the center of your screen there. Firefighters out in front. Weve just seen them pull some of their hoses out. The fire itself started a little more than an hour ago. Crews were reporting that people were jumping out of the first and secondstory windows just to escape the flames and smoke. It happened in 76 near brookedale avenue near the glen eagles golf course. We have a crew headed to the scene as well. Once again, two people were killed in this deadly fire in San Francisco this morning, one we continue to monitor. Lets take you to the google map of the scene. Once again, we want to let you know exactly where this location is. The address is 76 brookedale avenue, near the glen eagles golf course. It is in the sunnydale neighborhood, if youre familiar with it, its a particular area. So start a little bit more than an hour ago. As laura just mentioned, rumors of people having to jump out of the secondstory window. We have crews on that scene and will continue to give you more information as soon as we get it. But we also want to update you here on a different situation as well. This is another fire that we wanted to update you on about the kntv fire. Many of you heard about this previously. It happened on sunday when the building caught fire. Looks like were still looking at the brookedale fire right now near the glen eagles golf course. We are still monitoring this. But as you get an overhead view from the chopper, you can see where the flames actually burned through the roof. Yeah, exactly. And as reported, we had people who were jumping out of windows and what knot. Looks like firefighters probably got on the roof and tried to tackle that from above. Though, sadly, we know that two people have died. We dont know how many occupants were actually in that structure there. Kind of almost looks like a condotype situation. The good news is that firefighters were able to contain it rather quickly, as it could have quickly spread to adjoining units there. We dont know how the fire started, as well, and if there are other people that were injured as well. All right. We do have right now on the phone, joining us from the San Francisco fire department, we want to go ahead and get the latest information there. The cause of the fire is under investigation, in terms of what caused it, well find that out later. But it was called under control at 10 20 this morning. So our reports initially of people trapped in the building. So when our crews, upon arrival, they went in and they executed a search and they did find two individuals in the building. One, unfortunately, was deceased, and the other is in very Critical Condition and has been transported to the hospital. Okay. And we also heard reports of people who were actually trying to jump out of the window just to escape flames. True. There were several people, actually, that jumped out of the windows and its my understanding that this particular unit was occupied by six people. So up to three people jumped out of the windows. A terrible situation there. We can see crews still there on scene. Any concern of hot spots . Looks like a relaxed environment right now, no one actively fighting any kind of blaze. What do we know about any flareups . They called it under control at 10 20 this morning. Crews will be on scene for quite some time. In the meantime, almost 300 people, many of them students, are missing after a ferry capsized in icy waters in south korea. Nbc bay areas bob redell joins us live with the very latest on the search now for survivors. Good morning, bob. Good morning to you, laura. Hundreds of passengers might have been doomed by the operator of the farrier who told people to stay put, trapping them inside this ship. One of the rescuers in south korea now says theres little chance that those people could still be alive. Divers is not recovered anyone since the vessel sank. Their search inside the wreckage made difficult by poor visibility. So far, four people are confirmed dead. More than 280 passengers, many of whom are teenagers, are missing, while 174 people, some of them you can see right there, have been rescued in what could end up being south koreas worst maritime disaster in 20 years. This was supposed to be safe passage for 459 people, en route to an island known as south koreas hawaii. Many of them High School Students on a field trip. But wednesday morning, local, passengers heard a loud bang. Their 480foot long ferry lost control and started listing at this awful angle. There was confusion. This student asked if they should escape, but the announcement kept telling them to stay still. Passengers lucky enough to make it topside hung on to dear life, awaiting rescue, any way they could. By skiff, by chopper. Some with no choice but to jump into the very cold water as their ship had already disappeared beneath them. Onshore, survivors warmed themselves in balance et cans. Parents criedy eied out in grie wondering what happened to their child. One survivor fears dozens of the passengers, including many of the teenagers, became trapped below deck as water rushed in and prevented an escape. Those students thought to be between 16 and 17 years of age, attended a high school near seoul, korea, where right now parents have gathered, waiting for news on what happened to their children. In the past few minutes, the San Jose Fire Department has confirmed a suspect has been arrested in the fire at our former studios, the former kntvtv station. The fire started on sunday afternoon and absolutely obliterated the building and burned it to the ground. Police have confirmed there were Homeless People living inside and an arrest has been made. Well have more at 5 00 and 6 00. A registered sex offender was arrested after he was found at a south bay high school. Investigators say that Kevin Pickens illegally walked around on Delmar High School campus in san jose. This happened on april 8th, but officials just released the information today. They say pickens did not have permission to be on that campus. He was arrested without incident and book into the Santa Clara County jail. Thats where hes currently being held without bail. Pickens had to register as a sex offender after he was convicted of assault with intent to commit a specified sex offense. People in one san jose neighborhood are still waiting for someone to fix a broken water main thats been gushing water for days. Nbc bay areas Christie Smith live near that break. And christie win understand you just talked water officials. They going to do something about it . Reporter yeah, they are. As a matter of fact, the crews are finally here this morning. Water is still flowing down the street, just a little bit this morning. In fact, neighbors couldnt believe that water would be left to flow out here in a drought, but i did speak with san jose water. They say, actually, two to three days to get out and make a fix is quick. What they do is prioritize, there are major leaks out there, three in the last few days, and those go first. Roger obrien will have the greenest lawn on the block. Watering for hours, he got creative when he saw a gold mine out front. I got a submersible pump and plugged it in and ive had it running all night long on my lawn. Gallons of water flowing in the gutter during the drought. Were not going to have water all summer, basically, and all of us are going to have dead lawns starting, you know, tomorrow, from what i understand. Reporter except you, with your rig. Well, this will just waylay it a little bit. Reporter a small leak discovered sunday up the block on rose road avenue in san jose grew. Three days later, it was still flowing this morning and had cracked and lifted the asphalt near kala lehmans house. I mean, its certainly, the time that its taken, if its going to take this long, and it shouldnt, theres got to be a better way. Reporter at the san jose water company, they say this isnt a big water main, but a small Copper Service Line to a home. To repair first other underground utilities must be located, and that can take up to 48 hours. Meantime, an inspector keeps an eye on it. And they make a determination, to the best of their ability, as to what type of leak it is, and they look at a lot of clues. In other words, is the asphalt lifting. How much water is flowing out. Is that water flowing safely to a drain . In a big emergency, they say other rules apply. Certainly frustrating for neighbors who wanted a fast repair, but with buckets and hoses, theyre making a leak into a gift for their lawn. And back here live, you can see, theyre still digging out this hole. What theyre telling us is that this will be fixed, at least the water portion of it, but the end of the day, and theyll do a temporary fix on the asphalt and then do a permanent repair a little bit later. I asked about the drought concerns. They say they are aware and they appreciate what people are doing to save all the water that they can. But, again, they prioritize and the huge gushers, the big leaks, they say, are always the ones that get repaired first. But they take all leaks seriously. Well, this leak, you know, its happening a time where more bay area cities are imposing mandatory water restrictions. Livermore is the latest city on that list. Residents will have to cut down their water usage by 50 . Speaking of the drought, the dry conditions are about to drive the prices of produce way up. A new study says prices are about to jump, no matter where you shop. A head of lettuce could go up as much as 62 cents. Avocados, up 35 cents. And a pound of tomatoes, almost 50 cents. A lime that used to sell for 33 cents, now 79 cents. The manager of Windmill Farms in fremont says many farmers have had to cut back on their crops or simply not plant anything at all. This means stores have to import produce and thats not cheap. Customers are going to theyre definitely going to see the cost increase and its going to be across the board for everybody, from owners to customers, unfortunately. Youve got to eat, you know. So cut down on everything. Like what . Like cake, like party, you know, things to drink, all those things. No parties, no drinks. All the good stuff. Customers we spoke to say theyre picking up new habits like gardening in hopes of saving a little money. You and i are doing the same thing. Compare our gardens, coming up. Com parents we continue to follow breaking news this morning out of San Francisco, where at least one person has been killed in a house fire. I want to check in with nbc bay area cheryl hurd, just arrived live on the scene. Cheryl, what can you tell us . Reporter well, we just arrived on scene and we were told a fire broke out about an hour ago, maybe about an hour and a half ago on brookedale avenue, here in the sunnydale projects. Several people had to jump for their lives from this twostory building. And you can see the aerial shots there. The fire was brought under control, fairly quickly, but once firefighters went inside, they found two people inside. One confirmed dead, another one in unknown condition. Witnesses tell me that possibly a 3yearold was taken to the hospital. We have no idea what condition that child is in. Details are really sketchy out here. I dont know if you can see from the air, but if you come back live, you can see that there is a heavy Police Presence and you can see that a lot of police cars are here, but if you turn the corner, there are more police cars there. We are told that a nearriot broke out. People were very upset here, possibly trying to save the folks inside. Police had to bring the situation under control. Its really calm right now. Firefighters are kind of wrapping up. Theyre preparing to give us a briefing and let us know exactly what happened. But just to recap, as far as we know, one person is dead, possibly two. A 3yearold taken to a nearby hospital. We have no idea what condition that child is in. Reporting live in San Francisco, im cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. And cheryl, it was pretty remarkable, because the unit themselves were so close to each other. They managed to tackle this fire rather quickly, and it looks like, contained it to that one unit. Reporter it does look that way. I had a moment to run up the area, why im a little bit out of breath, but it looks like they cained the fire to that one unit. That one unit looks like it is destroyed, but the surrounding units look like theyre in tact. Again, were going to get more information on exactly what happened here in just a few minutes. All right. In fact, were hearing about prorussian forces rolling into ukrainian territory with the russian flag flying. Some ukrainians putting down their weapons, going over to the other side. Meanwhile, secretary of state john kerry is headed overseas again, trying to diffuse the crisis there. This will be the first time that the u. S. , ukraine, and russia have actually sat down together since the crisis began. The uss says the main goal of this meeting is to get ukraine and russia in the same room. And the robotic submarine has been searching the ocean floor for the missing jet, and so far has not found a thing. The submarine was deployed this morning for the second time this week. On its first day, it surfaced early after encountering waters simply too deep for it to go. The man accused of a bombing hoax near the Boston Marathon finish line yesterday is being held on 100,000 bail. That is 25yearold kevin edson. Hes charged with threatening battery, possession of a hoax explosive device, and also several other charges. This video of him was posted on instagram before he was arrested. Authorities stopped him because of his odd behavior. And the fact he was acting suspiciously. He reportedly had a backpack with a rice cooker in it. Today the prosecutor said edson told police he knew what he was doing. Now, that backpack along with another device found nearby were blown up. That second bag actually belonged to it and thektd get back to it after that area was quickly evacuated. A Pennsylvania Police officer, a man, has been dressing up as an amish woman in hopes of catching a suspected flasher. Take a look. Pulaski township sergeant chad adams says hes gone undercover and the incidents have stopped. A man had been exposing himself to amish children. A female officer from a Neighboring Department also went undercover. The amish who live in the area didnt want to have their children to have to testify in court, so they lent the officers womens bonnets, aprons, and dresses to catch or scare away the suspect and it seems to have worked. Pretty amazing. Well, bad boys beware. If you commit a crime in san jose, you could end up on National Television. Not in a good way. Popular reality show cops is now riding along with the San Jose Police department for the next three months. Camera crews will shadow patrol units, primarily on night shifts. Officials with the Police Department believe appearing in the show will help boost moral and could even help the department recruit more officers. This is the first time the show will feature a bay area Police Department in its 26year history. Hopefully we dont see anybody we know. A lot of Police Officers doing their great work. Not the way you want to get your National Television debut, thats for sure. Meteorologist Christina Loren joining us right now. We all know that theme song, the second you hear it. You got it stuck in my head and you didnt even sing it. But i know what theyre going to do when they come for crow. Temperatures looking good right now, 66 in mountain view. We are warming up nicely out there. Its going to be the warmest day of the week. The coast is nice and clear. You can see the reason why were getting offshore flow, full sunshine. Its a little hazy through the east bay hills, but theyre still really green, really pretty out there. Were going to hold up, really nice conditions, just about every single day this week. So as you can see here, temperatures are going to end up in the upper 70s for today. 69 degrees in San Francisco. 78 degrees out in the north bay. So overall, taking your temperatures up and then dropping them off and were going to bring them right back up as we get into the weekend. A little bit of a roller coaster ride, but nothing like the weather whiplash theyre experiencing on the northeast coast of this nation. Yeah, it was 80 degrees in cincinnati on sunday, and now, theyre in the 30s, with snow on the ground. So for us, if we put things into perspective, its going to be really nice. Traveling across the state of california for easter weekend, were looking good, friday through sunday, no major weather changes coming your way. I want to point out, its going to be just lovely around here. South bays at 76 on saturday. 75 degrees, just a touch cooler, for the bunnies on sunday. And yeah, i know you two have little ones. I love, i love seeing those kids all dressed up on easter sunday. They look like little adults in their proper gear. And then get chocolate all over their face. Thats fun. Looking forward to it. Many of us are familiar with snoopy linus and linus attachment to his blankets. Now students have made special blankets of their own to help other children who are in need. Today the school blessed those blankets that each class made by hand, 116 of them, actually. The blankets will be given to various nonprofits and groups to help out the sick and less fortunate. Each home room class actually had fundraisers to raise the cash they needed to buy the fabric to make the blankets. Sister michael ann mercy says its been a very meaningful project. When people experience some type of crisis or sickness or whatever, that we can extend that support to them. Through that blanket. So its a great project. Now, some of the groups that will be receiving those really special blankets include project night night, the Ronald Mcdonald house, and lutheran childrens hospital. A really lovely story. Need more of those. Ever been in one of those handsome cabs . One time in new york. Several people stepped in to stop an out of Horse Carriage carrying one woman and three children. This horse definitely gt spooked somehow. Much of the incident caught on various surveillance cameras. The two women and three children riding in the carriage, take a listen to this. When you look at that horse, just got spooked there, galloping through the streets. It ran through those busy intersections, crashed into five vehicles. The carriage operator was thrown from the coach. Weve not been told how shes doing today, but the tourists did manage to jump off and were not seriously hurt, but you feel for that horse and those people there. Pretty scary ride for all of them. The horse ran about six blocks before workers at a nearby restaurant managed to calm him down by dangling some carrots. Well be right back. Well, two boys caught a ride from a pretty unlikely source. Check this out. Yeah, the pope. During a ride through st. Peters square, the pope picked up two boys to join him on the popemobile.
