The District Attorney called this the most mass i case ever prosecuted here in San Mateo County. The grand jury indictments, three of them on 16 suspected gang members. All of them from East Palo Alto or menlo park. One gang so bold they called themselves the taliban. This was a result of an 18month investigation with local and federal law enforcement. Three of the defendants names were actually accused of tailing one of their rivals from his mothers house into belmont and opening fire on highway 101 in september 2012. Seriously wounding two men. The 16 are in custody. 11 of them in San Mateo County. The investigation was called operation sunny day for a very disturbing reason. When a murder they orchestrated was successfully carried out, their code word was sunny day. That was where the operation name came from, and it is a sunny day today because these 16 gang member felons that have wreaked such havoc in our community are in custody. Investigators say the crimes spanned from the peninsula to San Francisco. Four murders, two attempted murders, several of the defendants are actually appearing in court as we speak. Thank you for the latest. The San Jose Police officer accused of raping a woman in a hotel room could enter a plea today. Jeffrey graves was arrested earlier this month. Investigators say he forced his way into a hotel room and they say he raped a woman while he was on duty. Hours earlier, graves and several other officers were called to the womans house when she got into a fight with her husband. She says she wanted to spend the night at the hospital, so graves dropped her off. Dr detectives say he later returned and sexually assaulted her. The former owners of a livermore preschool will stand trial for allegedly swaddling babies too tightly. A judge has rule there had is enough evidence to try them. The two women were accused of wrapping the infants so tightly, it impaired their breathing. Theyll be in Court Next Month to set a trial date. Investigators spent last night picking through evidence in San Franciscos tenderloin neighborhood after a shooting that injured seven people. The victims were taken to San Francisco general. None of their injuries are considered to be lifethreatening. Most received gunshot wounds in the arm or leg. Officials say a fight broke out around 9 00 last night. Investigators are hoping that witnesses can help them figure out exactly what happened. Just as a matter of course, we always follow up and canvas, so we are following up on that. So far, no arrests have been made. Investigators have not released any details about possible suspects. Were learning new details about the deadly mud slide in washington state. Nbcs Jennifer Bjorkland has the latest. There are 108 reports of names of individuals who are either unaccounted for or messing. A shocking number of those possibly buried in the slide taken from unconfirmed lists gathered by officials over the last 48 hours. The number is i think no question going to decline dramatically. But it is a number that we want to go with and say thats what were working with. Reporter the mud swallowed up everything in its path, a square mile of quicksandlike muck, 60 feet deep in some places that hit without warning on saturday. The devastation is just unrelenting and awesome. There really is no stick standing in the path of the slide. Reporter in the first 12 hours, rescuers could hear voices from the mud, pleas for help. Teams pulled a 6monthold boy and six other people out alive. The voices theyre hearing are literally encased in 20 feet of mud. Gregs brother john and sisterinlaw chris are among the missing. Shipping channel is closed because of an oil spill. A barge collided with the ship on saturday, causing about 170,000 gallons of tarlike oil to spill into texass galveston bay. More help is being called in to contain that spill and help a shore bird habitat. Its near the peak of himigrati season right now. And with this spill comes as we reflect on that secondlargest oil spill in u. S. History, 25 years ago, in fact, today, the Exxon Valdez Oil tanker poured 11 million gallons of oil into the Prince William sound. That oil spread over 1,300 miles on shoreline, killed hundreds of thousands of wildlife. Even now that region is still trying to recover. The Anchorage Daily News reports that people who live in the area still find fresh pockets of oil. The government says some species are still trying to recover as well, including herring and a group of killer whales that call that area home. Exxon paid 900 million in a civil settlement in 1991 but could pay up to 100 million more if theres proof of unexpected continuing damage. The California EnergyCommission Says the amount of crude oil being carried by trains to bay area has skyrocketed, thanks to an oil boom in north dakota and canada. Trains are carrying about 2. 7 million gallons of crude oil into the bay area every day. State senator jerry hill says that has him worried. He points to a deadly accident in quebec last year involving a train carrying crude oil in which 47 people were killed. Hill says california could not currently respond to a disaster of that magnitude. Its the Response Time and the preparedness that we dont have in california. Were back in about 1980 is where were prepared for. We cant deal with that volume. In 2011, there were 9,000 tank cars filled with oil brought into california from out of state. By 2016, the states Energy Commission says that number could reach 200,000 tank cars. 10 would travel through the bay area. The trains are operated by Burlington Northern san jose railway. Pg e will speed up plans to upgrade a controversial pipeline in san carlos. Crews will start work online 147 later on this year, rather than waiting two years to do the upgrades as previously planned. Most of the work will be on a bend in the line near edmonds road in redwood city. The city council will review pg es plans during its meeting tonight. It will send a letter out to customers about the upcoming work and theyll also hold a Community Meeting next month. The work will also determine the operating pressure for that line, which has been an issue of contention between the city and utility ever since pg e documents revealed that that line could lead to another san bruno situation.
