The fire burning in yosemite, less than seven days this fire has grown to almost the size of san jose, as crews struggled to get ahold of these flames. Nbc bay areas bob redell is in the newsroom with the latest on the rim fire. Bob . Reporter good morning, jon, marla. The San FranciscoFire Department is the latest Bay Area Agency to be called upon to help put out what is turning out to be a very large, very serious event. This is a video just came in from the fire station located 19th and fulsom within the past hour or two. Sfsd sent 22 firefighters and five engines east toward the sierra foothills where this morning, the socalled rim fire has now entered Yosemite National park. Remember, yosemite covers a lot of space it has not reached the valley floor where most of the tourists and lodging was located. It has crossed the parks western border around threatening the communities of Pine Mountain lake and grove land. Now, here are the latest numbers from cal fire. This fire has now burned over 105,000 acres, which if you were to convert to square miles, about 164 square miles. That is a doubling in size over the past 24 hours. And in spite of the fact that there are a couple thousand firefighters fighting this thing, it is only 2 contained and theres nothing in the near term that suggests the firefighters will be able to gain the upper hand. The weather conditions are still prime for flame and the terrain is so rugged and steep, its very hard to fight. It is very intense fire, the wind shift, wind increase that youre going to see fire activity increase. Check out. Its in gods hands. Just let what happened, happened. Reporter the smoke can be seen within Yosemite National park. Highway is still shut down. Rangers considering the shut down of other parks of the inside of the park. Already forced the evacuation of several summer camps, including San Franciscos camp mather, which forced the cancellation of this weekends strawberry musical festival. Here in the newsroom, im bob redell. Back to you, marla. Thanks so much. More on the tough conditions the crews are fighting out there, a rare look at the fire from space. Lets check in with meteorologist christina loren. Good morning. Hey, good morning to you. What you might think are clouds, take a look at this. That is drifting smoke from the plume of the rim fire. Thats moving all the way into lake tahoe. In fact, its actually taking up about 200 miles worth of space. You can just see that smoke plume. This is coming to us from nasa. You can see from the bay area just how large that smoke s here is the deal, next 48 hours, winds are going to consistently come from the southwest. Thats actually a cool ocean breeze. However, because its up in the Higher Elevations at 3,000 feet, it is a very dangerous situation, because winds can just whip. The higher you go up in the atmosphere, the less friction there is. That is a dangerous situation that firefighters run against. Winds are going to continue to be gusty, next 24s to 48 hours, an air quality alert issued. If you are going to be headed to tahoe, you suffer from respiratory issues, just want to keep in mind all this smoke is headed that way. Now, locally, we have a much different scenario, fire danger certainly decreased. Earlier this week, no more dry lightning in the forecast, a pretty nice weekend. Take you to that forecast coming up. John and marla, back to you. Thank you. Two people right now under arrest this morning faces charges of plotting and kidnapping, wanted to execute police officers. Police say this man knocked a woman to the ground and sexually assaulted her just after midnight on wednesday. She was fortunately able to fight that man off but he eventually got away. The attack happened near the corner of franklin and sherman streets right off the edge of campus. This a cause for concern, definitely. I close my door when im not in front. I close my other door to lock it. She does the same thing. Three weeks ago, another woman was physically assaulted just five blocks away. That happened on lexington street west of that campus. Then back in late july, police say a man climbed through a window and sexually assaulted a woman who was sleeping inside of her apartment. That was on homestead road near kylie boulevard. We want to warn you, you may think some of the videoour bea to see is disturbing. Reporter images are still coming in showing absolute horror in syria, what a growing number of experts say do indicate that chemical weapons were used. The administration seems to be weighing its options, trying to find out exactly what happened and crucially, who may have been responsible before taking any action, let alone military action. If these reports are true, it would be an outrageous and flagrant escalation of the use of chemical weapons by the regime. So our focus is on nailing down the facts. Reporter u. N. Secretarygeneral, ban kimoon, says if it is proven that chemic chemical weapons were used it would be a crime against humanity and result in criminal consequences. Any use of chemical weapons anywhere, by anybody, under any circumstance circumstances would violate inters aal in law. Reporter russia, an ally of the Syrian Regime of bashar al assad, called for u. N. Inspectors to be allowed access to these sites of the alleged atrocities. Sur represently, the u. N. Inspectors are not far away, in damascus, but they are being denied access to these locations by the syrian government. Richard engel, nbc news, cairo.
