The dry conditions and then the off shore wind. Now this week itll be the heat. We will see temperatures soaring in to the 90s and above 100 inland. Despite the fact that the week will start very mild like we have had this weekend. Right now 59 degrees in San Francisco. Patchy fog, maybe drizzle again for the morning and enjoy the cool air while it lasts. Inland east bay. Comfortable sleeping weather for now but i think low temperatures by next weekend could be in the upper 60s. 61 degrees right now in dublin. 64 degrees and the reason for the haze is wildfire smoke which has been dropping down the east, being pushed inland by the sea breeze which is bringing in smoke and low clouds for the morning. You can see it there. The upper level low just off shore. The unhealthy levels for near surface smoke up in northwestern california and southwest oregon. We have the low clouds and the drizzle. Similar trend. Clouds on the coast but a change for the afternoon for inland areas across the north bay. You may see a few high clouds. That upper low thats bringing us a little bit of the smoke. Probably not enough midlevel moisture to warrant any real shower chances and there you see the low clouds in to tuesday morning. Our temperature trend at least to start the week is a familiar one. It is similar to what we had this weekend. By lunchtime temperatures climbing to the 70s. Highs tomorrow a little warmer out toward livermore and fairfield. Starting to see upper 80s. 80 in san jose, what willpower up a very different looking seven day forecast, starting to see at the bottom of the screen ask a strong ridge of High Pressure. This ridge starts to amplify into saturday and right in the middle of Labor Day Weekend forecast. Thats when the temperatures will start to climb. Right now it looks like as early as friday, mid90s inland and then as we head toward saturday, watch the bay side temperatures. This is very important. 70s and 80s bay side. Near 100 degrees concord and fairfield. Near 100 degrees near livermore and to morgan hill. Bay side for now. Still seeing in the 70s and 80s. We will have to watch that closely for areas, especially those that dont have air conditioning. Thats manageable. We see more 90s popping up bay side that could lead to issues. Right now plan on heat advise is for the inland east bay and areas south of san jose. Starting friday i think maybe all the way beyond labor day. Look at ten day outlook. Concord well above 100. Napa may be a travel plan for Labor Day Weekend. Things looking hot. San francisco for now staying in the mid to upper 70s for this weekend. You see that trend heading in to the Holiday Weekend. Numbers starting to go up. We talk about fire danger. Even without strong winds, warm nights, hot days, especially around the hills, really going to start to dry out. We are counting down to tomorrows artemis launch and hearing a researcher here in the bay area playing a big role in the mission. We are hours away from our historic launch. Nasa is bringing in a new era of Space Exploration and taking a huge step toward returning to the moon after 50 years. Take a live look at the artemis rocket on the launch pad, Kennedy Space center in florida. Tomorrows launch is just a test flight. There wont be anyone on board. A critical step in getting back to the moon and beyond. Joining me now is jeremy from nasa. Thank you so much for being with us here this evening. I go back to 1969. July, we landed on the moon. We got, you know, Neil Armstrong was there. Here we are and we are really taking a different approach. What is going on . The difference between that one and this one. Yeah. Thats a great question. So, our goal this time around with the Artemis Program is to establish a consistent human presence on the moon and then reaching forward to start getting our way into exploring the solar system. We will be looking at ways to establish lunar bases, to learn how to live off planet and how to really start to extract resources from what we flow is there on the moon today. And this is also tying in. We are not just looking at the moon. We are thinking about mars as well. Thats right. Yes. We have hard, solid evidence that there are resources on the moon in the poles in the form of ice water that we can then develop more technology to convert into fuel for space craft, rockets, that can extend into mars. It really is kind of like a stepping stone on our way to mars. And your role is thermal Protection System manager, with the heat we are talking about on this. Tell us about your job and how critical it is to the mission. Yeah. I mean its a team effort. Im the deputy manager for the orion space craft. When orion comes back from the moon to earth itll hit the atmosphere at about 25,000 miles an hour. Coming in that fast the out side of the vehicle gets very hot. Our heat shield will reach surface temperatures of up to 5,000 degrees and our thermal protect system is designed to keep the space craft and the astronauts inside safe and comfortable despite the heat going on around them. Tell me about you what are you most excited about . You want the readings and you need that kind of information. What are you most excited about with regard to this mission . Its been a Long Time Coming for me. I have been working on this program for over 10 years. Theres a lot thats gone into it. I am excited about seeing our system finally work the way we have designed it to coming back from the moon. Its great to be part of a program Whose Mission is to not only return humans to the moon but return to the moon with the first woman and the first person of color and for me that is just a humbling experience that im so blessed to be part of. Thats a great point. The inclusiveness that we are seeing on this mission t wasnt there in the 60s. Yeah. Its been too long to be taken on and im glad we are finally doing it now. We will find out tomorrow morning, 5 30 a lot of people who are watching will be getting up then. Jeremy, thank you so much for taking the time to join us here this evening. Okay. We are just about six hours from the launch window opening. Here is another live look at the launch pad. Different angle now. We are seeing all sides of artemis. This is at the Kennedy Space center in florida. As we said earlier the weather will play a key role in whether the launch will happen. Rob is keeping a close eye on it and has a quick check of the weather and a closer look at the technology helping power this launch. You saw the live look at the fuel tank for armetis. We did have a one hour delay due to thunderstorms. Those have moved out. With that delay teams trying to get caught up as they approach the next launch hold coming up before launch much if automatic things come together with artemi1 the launch may remind you as the first stage of this rocket has the twin solid rocket boosters on both sides and you saw the external tank with the orange insulation. What are different are the four engines and what makes this different than the Space Shuttle is that the second stage. That white houses us to move out of earths orbit and that will be part of the orion with the four solar panel that will unfold into low and high orbits around the moon and if all this comes together and gets underway tomorrow we are looking at a 42 day mission with those lunar orbits and as you heard with our friends that all important heat shield test as the orion comes back at 24,500 miles an hour back into the atmosphere. A lot faster than a low earth orbit so they will watch that closely. A lot of technology from the shuttle era combining the next generation getting us back to the moon. Thank you. Artemis set to liftoff around 5 30. They are trying to make up for a little lost time. We will have complete coverage of the launch on today in the bay beginning at 4 30 tomorrow morning. Its one of the most expensive mistakes in San Francisco and they are still trying to fixt a new Building Permit for the leaning sinking millennial tower. The reporting on the luxury shower. Construction crews behind me are digging on this side of the Northwest Side of the building. They have installed 18 piles to bedrock and the city said thats enough. Those 18 piles go down to bedrock to anchor the high rise. They believe it should stop it from tilting and sinking but each time they started to dig to install the pile itself caused the building to lean and sink more so a 5th official eventually stopped the plan to install 52 support piles and submitted a new one that he relies on just the 18 already in the ground. The plan is now to extend the foundation and attach a corner of the building to some of the 18 piles. That requires even more digging. Crews are busy digging. 25 feet down on the Northwest Side of the building. The Load Transfer from the existing foundation to the new piles is very complex. A veteran engineer said by design the piles arent supposed to be rigid but more like adjustable cushions and he worry that with only 18 the piles wont function as well as if there were 52. You dont stop continuing settlement. So thats a basic flaw in the design. Now that the city has approved the plan the work done at the corner of the iting tower should be done by the end of the year and they stand by their assertion that the 18 support piles are enough to stop the sinking. He has been covering the story from day 1 and he continues to break new information on it. You can watch all of the previous reports on the website. Just go to nbc bay area. Com and search millennial tower. Up next what started as picking up one piece of trash has blossomed in to an organization that is helping clean up San Francisco. In order to get San Francisco to do something they have likely never done before vince is willing to do something that he has never done before. Never dressed up as a jedi. On this day he invited fans to help make their corner of the galaxy cleaner. Trash in San Francisco is not unique. Its part of a campaign he started called refuse ref fuse. His message, if you love your city, then prove it. We say we love San Francisco. We live here, but its got to be more than i pay my taxes, right . It started he said during the pandemic looking for outdoor, socially distanced activities for him and his children. So they started picking up litter on their block every week. One day a neighbor called out asking if he could join them. We just exchanged numbers and then he came out picking up trash alongside me and my kids. I was like okay there is something here. There was. A lot more there. They have since led 600 clean ups all over the city, gathering more than 150,000 gallons of trash. Places that remain clean tend to stay clean longern as well. Along the way he realized he was connecting with his community and his city and that even more than the clean streets is what he really wants to share with others. Picking up litter and just the easiest way to get people involved. Picking up the trash is not as important as it the issue as homelessness, addiction, mental health, education, public safety, but those things are so big and so many things and its such a complicated system i dont know what i can do to address that but trash on the street . I can do that . Its so tangible. And attractive message leading to a more attractive city. If you know someone who is doing something extraordinary email us at bay area proud at nbc barry. Com.
