Digging through 10 years of federal records we found at least 172 official reports involving thousands of airplanes where the faa caught suspected unapproved parts or sups on the plane. One record shows a repair station fraudulently put car parts on airplanes, a big nono according to faa. Is it a problem . Yeah, bogus parts are a problem. Reporter of the 172 reports, at least 17 involved commercial domestic carriers including alaska airlines, delta, jetblue, southwest and us airways. Often the sups are put on commercial airplanes without the companys knowledge. But there are cases like this one, an fff investigation that American Airlines had a, quote, lamp installed in their anticollision light assemblesn after knowing it was a suspected unapproved part. In its response to the faa in the investigation, American Airlines said its mechanics, quote, removed the part as soon as practicable. You have something manufactured incorrectly, not per spec, it is going to fail. If you have a failure, it is going to be a problem and could be a catastrophic one.
