We investigate the widespread use of bogus airplane parts all over the united states. Im Senior Investigative reporter steven stock. Were talking about questionable airplane parts for sale. Everywhere. Senior Investigative Reporter steven stock is with us. What did you get your hands on and how . Reporter raj, this is what we got our hands on. These are actual airplane parts. We got them simply by pointing and clicking on the internet. Theyre supposed to have official faa documentation along with them. But many of the parts we obta obtainobtai obtained did not. Experts tell us these parts can pose a safety risk to anyone who flies. And i miss him terribly. Reporter gails husband ken died in august, 2009 when the cessna 182 he was piloting crashed into a vineyard shortly after takeoff from napa county airport. I truly think about him every second of every day. Reporter an experienced crosscountry pilot with more than 1,000 flight hours, the 23467yearold was a beloved father and grandfather. He loved to fly. The feeling of being up there but also the tremendous knowledge about the technology of the plane and the backup systems that thing would work. Reporter nine months after the crash, ntsb investigators officially ruled that pilot disorientation what they called loss of situational aware flez caused the accident. The ntsb report also show no evidence of a premishap mechanical malfunction or failure. It didnt have to happen. Reporter but Gail Gottlieb and her family were not satisfied with the ruling. So they hired one of the countrys foremost aviation safety attorneys mike danko of Redwood Shores to dig further. Unfortunately theres no noncritical part on an airplane. Reporter this Forensic Research uncovered that it was not pilot airer that caused the crash but rather an unsafe, unapproved airplane part. Slide the seat back and forth. Reporter a seat track release had just been installed by a local mechanic. The part had no faa documentation or certification. Danko suspects that caused the pilots seat to move out of control. When you take off, the nose points up. So if that seat slips back, youve got a big problem because you cant reach kret controls to steer the plane to go up and down and cant reach the pedals with your feet. Reporter in february, a civil jury ruled that the mechanism who installed the unapproved seat part should pay it the family more than 13 million. In this case, its easy to put on an unapproved part with no documentation at all because who is checking. The answer to that basically no one. Reporter the faa considers unapproved parts a risk to aeration because they may not properly perform their intended function and may not withstand the high stress conditions found on planes. But an investigation by nbc bay area discovered bogus parts can be found easily throughout the aviation industry. It really is pervasive in the industry. Reporter in response to our public records request, the faa provided 135 different records of unapproved airplane parts involving u. S. Aircraft in its National Tracking and reporting system. Thats just in the last five years alone. Included in those reports and you proved parts found in commercial aircraft. We found 22 different airplane crashes that killed seven people and injured 18 others where ntsb investigators officially pointed to unapproved parts contributing to the accidents. Suspected unapproved parts is very serious. Reporter ken gardner helped one the unapproved Parts Program in the 1990s. I received all the nonapproved part reports coming in. Reporter he continues to beings an a consultant on criminal investigations involving unapproves parts. He says approved parts cost more because they must go through rigorous testing and inspection to make sure they dont fail. Unapproved parts do not go through that. Have no idea when he theyre going to fail. If they fail. If they fail it could be critical. Catastroph catastrophic. Reporter how do the parts find their way on board airplanes . This is one way. We found these airplane parts for sale over the internet. And we bought them. Everything from o troings an engine piston. From an exhaust valve to lighting lock rings. Thats definitely a switch. Reporter from a sensitive switch to electronic dee coder Panel Previously failed in a commercial dc10. Many of the parts claimed to be faa approved but provide nod required documentation. So it gets out in the middle of the atlantic and goes bad, where does it go. Reporter he told us the electronic dee coder panel can sell new for more than 1,000. We bought it for 60. It needs to be investigated. I would not put that thing out there for sale. Somebodys life could depend on that. The consequences for our family have been unbelievable. Reporter thats why Gail Gottlieb is now speaking out to make sure everyone knows what can happen when an unproved part even a seemingly insignificant one is put into an airplane. When i look at his pictures, all i can think about is this didnt have to happen. Reporter the airplane mechanic who worked on ken gottliebs pilot seat is still working in the bay area. And still has his license. He could not be reached for comment. The faa acknowledges this is a problem although a spokesman told me in a statement unapproved parts make up a small fraction of all aviation products out there. The faa says it aggressively pursues these cases and if it can make a civil case it will. You can be fined up to 32,000. You got these on the internet. On the internet. Anyone can buy them. Thats right. This is an engine piston. This is that piece that came out of a dc10. For 60 bucks. If it fails over the atlantic, the entire the entire airplane could go into the water. Thats opening a lot of eyes this report. Thank you. If you have a tip for steven or the investigative unit, give us a call at 888996tips or email to the unit at nbcbayarea. Com.
