Dozens of police cars, heavily armed officers and they seem to be focusing where the shootings happened nearly ten hours ago. You look down the street where one of the officers was shot. Battering rams taking down a fence tonight near washington and fremont boulevards. That is near where a traffic stop happened at about 1 30 p. M. Today, saw a man back into a police officer. Gunfire was exchanged between the two of them. During the encounter, the officer went down. Reporter the suspect fled, later, two blocks away, the officer spotted the suspect, a hispanic man, bald, wearing a giants shirt. Later, again they exchanged gufrp with the officer and another officer was injured. Reporter this video shows the man at a restaurant looking at a crazed man with a gun and knife coming right to the restaurant, employees holding the door shut and tight. He came towards me, we were closed, within five or six feet of the guy. Im lucky to be alive. Reporter the man came, kept going, there was a helicopter all day and night and a police drone has been spotted providing stealth surveillance. One of the officers, a tenyear veteran is in stable condition. But a oneyear veteran is in critical condition. What we hear is were seeing officers come in, in the past several minutes dozens of patrol cars from other agencies in the parking lot. When they come in, they hold their head high and try to be supportive for other Law Enforcement and families. Reporter its an emotional week, deputies and officers manning the Trauma Center tonight, inside, the two fremont officers, one in critical condition, we dont know his name but know he was shot once and has one year of service. The other, a tenyear veteran who was a detective was shot twice and is stable today. Tonight, the Police Escorted what we believe are their family and friends inside. We respected their privacy but spoke to the officer when he came outside. This is what every officer dreads, when you hear officerinvolved shootings. Reporter he says that he knows both of the men and visited with both of them in his hospital room. These are people i talked with and had meals with, its hard. Reporter tonight, officers with grief counseling experience are helping to provide emotional support in the Trauma Center as they wait and hope. All i would ask is that the people continue to offer not only the prayers and help to this family, but help in taking care of the officers. Reporter and now they wait and hope for good news. Many want a Community Meeting to discuss the officerinvolved shooting that killed jessica williams. A meeting that the chief says he will not have. Not having town halls after somebody gets murdered, that is a step backwards. If they are not as transparent, that is not a good sign. Reporter body cameras and tasers were on the table tonight. Activists say after several Commission Votes against tasers they should not be an option. Disproportionate use with the tasers on black and brown people in the community. Reporter chaplain says he is expanding the deescalation training, and the departments focus is on keeping everybody alive. This all boils down to one thing, the issue is human life. The familys move to protect their son is facing an unexpected roadblock. And many are unaware of the problems at the dental office. I think you will be surprised, kids commonly have dental problems, right . And when there are problems dentists often put the children asleep because theyre scared. But we found that dentists can operate differently from many medical doctors and some say they are risking kids lives. Calebs fears were normal for a 6yearold boy, except for an extra tooth growing in his mouth. So he went to the dentist to have it pulled. To keep calm, the doctor gave him the medicine. He was scared. I was too, i told him to be brave and that it would be okay. I kissed him. And told him id see him soon. For calebs procedure, the dentist, who is licensed as an oral surgeon was doing two jobs, pulling the tooth and administering anesthesia. Four drugs, two narcotics were injected into his arm, but before the event, he stopped breathing, the dentist tried to open his air way but nothing work. His oxygen levels went down, he went into cardiac arrest. He was rushed to the hospital but had been without oxygen far too long in the dentists chair, roughly seven minutes, his organs shut down, he lost all brain function. For the next two days, his parents agonized on whether or not they should keep him on life support. Once we had information about his brain and consulted with a neurologist, we realized we had to let him go. I swore i would never leave the hospital without him, so to leave him there was the worst you could imagine. An autopsy report said he died in the hospital, but his parents believe he died in the dentists chair, because the dentist was doing too much, acting as both the surgeon and the anesthesia administer. Reporter one surgeon said the practice of one person performing a procedure and giving anesthesia is never allowed at Childrens Hospital and he believes it should never be allowed in dentists offices. You have maybe a half a minute to make critical decisions on how to manage the childs air way. You cant do that if you dont have somebody economy there helping you. Reporter the california dental board regulates dentists and permits hundreds of specially trained dentists to do both jobs, but should it . Consider propophol. And that would be somebody like myself doing this for their careers. And yet dentists who operate on their own regularly administer propofol on their own. So we wanted to know is caleb alone . Is this practice safe . We asked the board how many people have died while having general anesthesia in a dentists office. It could not tell us. Instead it gave us three years of raw data, incidents reported by the medical community and their lawyers. The files are redacted and inconsistent. One person required a surgery and later died. One report ends quickly. In a twosentence report a patient is taken to the hospital for cardiac evaluation but it doesnt tell us what happened next. We could not make sense of those reports so we asked the dental board for a review. We were told all 15 members were unavailable. A spokesperson took our questions on behalf of the board. Is it safe . The board has not discussed that particular matter at this point. Reporter that answer is not good enough for calebs parents. They have asked the legislature to change state law, to require a separate dentist to give anesthesia during pediatric procedures. But many groups support dividing the duties. One is not convinced. The california dental association. The association selected dr. Paul reggirado to explain why. Having a separate doctor in the room doesnt necessarily guarantee patient safety. It is upsetting. Reporter dr. Patel disagrees. He is licensed to do both dental work and anesthesia at the same time. But he does not. For safetys sake, he brings in another dentist to give the anesthesia and has been doing it for 12 years. Today he is operating with dr. Christine yem, here is how they describe the death. Completely preventible. So preventible. Reporter patel and yem are calling for change joining calebs parents. I keep thinking i wish someone else had done this years ago and saved caleb. I really want to save caleb. Reporter calebs dentist is still practicing. The dental board has accused him of gross negligence. Right now his case is with the attorney general. Right now there is a twoperson committee to determine if two people should be present during general anesthesia. We still have many questions and will follow this story. In the meantime, if your child needs work in the dental office that requires general anesthesia, all the experts we talk to say you should talk to the dentist and ask whether or not another dentist will be present. Also santa rosa at 90. So we have High Pressure offshore. That is producing the heat to past couple of days. But the key change in the forecast well see by thursday evening also into friday. Is a drier northerly wind building in. That wind helps to bump temperatures up even more. As you look at the sevenday forecast it pushes temperatures for the interior valley. As of right now, police are telling nbc bay area they dont know about School Tomorrow because this search is still up in the air.
