Reports of a suicidal man at 6 30 this evening. As they approached, the man opened fire on the officer killing one of them. Right now that man is hold up inside of his apartment. Ian coal and jeanne elle are on the scene, and Terry Mcsweeney, we have heard from the police e chief and the mayor, and what is the latest . They have every reason to believe that the man who shot and killed this 12year veteran officer of the san jose p. D. Is held up in the same location where the officers went to help him him. They have heard from the relatives that he was high and had possession of a high powered rifle. The officers never had a chance when they were walking up the streets one officer was shot and killed on the sidewalk. They believe he is still inside. In addition to trying to find him, the officers have to deal with the loss of one of their own, and a few minutes ago right here on monterey road, we heard from a couple of of the officers and the police chief. There was a Wide Exchange of gun fire and sad to say that one of our officers was shot and killed. This is not something that we would ever want to do. It is a sad day for Law Enforcement and for the Police Department in our community. Reporter the police chief choked up there and the eyes were bloodshot, and we didnt have a chance to ask him what is going on right now with the family, but we foe that mayorly car liccardo was out there to talk to the family. Shortly after the shots were fired, we were out here at center road near umbargar and here is the scene. I heard the shouting, and one guy was shoot ing theing the cop, and running away. Three shots fired. Reporter one two, three or how . One, two, three. Reporter where were you and where were the shots . We came in just down the street a few seconds afterwards and saw the cops running down the street. Reporter again, to review the scene out there just after 7 00, the officers responded to a suicidal man, tandand the officers got out of the car and were waubing down the street, and he shot and kill ded the officer, and he has not left the apartment, and still has a high pf howered rifle, and he has not left. And there are a slew and you can imagine how many San Jose Police aufofficers are out there, and the san jose fire out there and other p. D. Out there all primed and ready to go in to help whoever needs it if anybody needs it next. The positive right now is that the person with the high powered rifle is believed to be kon contained although the officers say it is a open investigation and they are keep ging any leads open, and taking the leads seriously, but they believe they have the gunman inside of the house from where he fired the shots shots that took the life of a 12year veteran of the san jose Police Department whose name is not released for some time. And we will move on but it has been nearly 14 years since that last Police Officer was killed there and you might recall jeffrey montana who was shot and killed in the Almaden Valley area who was shot in the routine traffic stop, and the gunman was convicted in a high profile case that lasted more than seven years. And now, lets bring in ian kole and ian, a lot of witnesses here and we want to share the exclusive footage, and we understand it is graphic. But what can it show us, and what does it reveal . Well, raj i spoke with a man who lives near the scene, and he was at a nearby Convenient Store when he saw all of the police activity, and started to roll it on his cell phone, and we will show you some of it now. You can hear two shots initially, and the officers returning fire and he says that the suspect was shooting at the officers behind the glass sliding door and the rest of the video is disturbing so we chose not to air it in the entirety, but we asked him to describe what he saw. One of the two shots hit the Police Officer, and the second one was attempt ing toing to hit another officer next to that officer. Then when that happened, the Police Officers dropped to the floor to attend to the other officer that was shot. But then everyone retreated and left the officer there, and i knew that he was gone. I watch ded the video as well, and it also appears to hear the officer down and you can hear a total of five shots and followed by another shot a few seconds later, and you can hear the Police Responding quickly to the officer koun on the ground. I am really worried, because i have some frantic guy with a gun, and my husband and i want to get home to our kids. Reporter and she is not alone, because this parking lot is crowded with people who want to get home. Police told them to evacuate after the man shot an officer. They said to get away and pushed everybody back and put up the tape. They said that stray bullets can hit you where you are standing, and a gunman on the loose. Reporter but he said that he took it seriously. Oh, yes, everybody left really soon. Reporter scary moments, and now the wait. We will is have to sleep in the cars, because we have to go to school. My heart goes out to his fam family. Reporter and police are telling people not only that they have to go home but some say they have to be out here for hours, but some say, they have no idea how long it will be before they can go home to see their children or go home, and some are frustrated but they realized that an officer has been shot and they are feeling sympathy for the Police Department. And a lot of sympathy from the surrounding Police Departments all over the bay area and local Police Departments have been tweeting in, and calling n and just the responses of social media on the san jose and what is difficult on all of this is the ongoing scene, and you can see the chopper overhead, and you can hear from Terry Mcsweeney of the ground level, and police are surrounding the center road and um umbarger road. And the call in about 6 00 according to the police chief, and it killed one of the officers and sam liccardo, the mayor of san jose said that he had met with the officers family, and said it is one of the most difficult things that thast he has had to do as a public officer, and in his life. What you seeing there is the apartment on senter road, and the gunman inside of one of the apartments shot and fired at the officers, and there is a lot more to the video that we are choosing not to show you because of the graphic nature and out of respect to the san jose Police Department, but the gunman scott dunham is held up in the apartment complex, and a lot of people who have been living here and in this crowded area have been e evacuated. He is the first officer in san jose to be killed in nearly 14 years. It is a waiting game, because that suspect is inside of the apartment as police wait to charge in or wait for him to wait it out and perhaps surrender. Well, emotional update from all of those folks, but they believe that the suspect is inside of the home that the officers were going to the help him out, and he had been reported by a relative to be suicidal and high with access to weapons, and the officer was just shot and killed right there as he was coming up, and it was more or less an ambush and the officers did exchange gun fire but right off of the top, it is a man shooting at the officers unsuspecting that anything would happen to them. We have a picture of ohim and he is in the 50s, and scott dunham, and again, this is the man who was report bade relative to be suicidal with access to weapon, and, too, possibly high and that is what the officers walked in one 12year veteran shot and killed right there on the sidewalk. The plan right now, and i did ask chief es qvalekaescaval what made them so certain that he was inside of the house. And he said that the car was there, and reason to believe that they did not get intoo too many details, but they believe that he is inside of the house, and they have it resurrounded over there on umbarger and it is astonishing that they were pushing people back one block, a ndand then two blocks as onethird of a mile of people clearing out. And not only san jose p. D. , but sunnyvale as well, a and the fire stand thing by, and ambulances as well in the prospect of another officer injured if there is further gun fire. After the officer was shot and killed be by high powered rifle, there was an exchange of gun fire and the suspect may have been hit, but they do not know and no other officers were hit other than the one officer shot and killed. So they may be dealing with a wounded person inside of the house, and could be dead as well, but they are being extremely cautious, and they know what this person could do, and he still has the rifle inside of the house. And terry, a couple of incidents come the mind. A few years ago, in oakland, this officer was ambushed and then a similar story in oakland and in santa cruz recent lyly. Any indication that the officer was wearing a bulletproof vest . I did not hear a word about that from anybody at the press conference from the chief es qvaleka escavale or what he had on, because again, they were responding from a relative who called and said he was suicidal, and possibly high and had access to weapons. But i dont know if he was wearing a kevlar vest. That is totally understandable at this point since it is an ongoing investigation, and ongoing standoff. We will be back to you, terry.
