This is alarming to many people. We have uncovered oil and Gas Companies dumping dangerous chemicals into your water. And state officials are well aware of it. But how and why did it happen . Investigative reporter steven stock joins us with what he found. Reporter state Officials Say quote errors were made. We found waste waters from fr k fracking was reinjected into aquifers where high quality Drinking Water is located n. The middle of a citrus road off breken ridge road east of bakersfield sits an oil drill, nothing out of the ordinary in an area are tens of thousands of oil wells dot the landscape and blend in with the agriculture. We discovered this one well has been used to reinject oil recovery wastewater, including wastewater from fracking back into the ground, into an aquifer containing high quality water, water good enough to drink. This is something thats going to slowly contaminate everything we know around here. Reporter almond grower tom franz is a fourth generation kern county farmer. Im frustrated with the fact that upstream our aquifer is refilled by the sierra mountains to the east. Those areas where they have been injecting water into the aquifer, wastewater, is upstream of this area. That water moves. Reporter the toxic wastewater reinjected at this site along with eight others like it went into what the state and epa call nonexempt aquifers, in other words aquifers with water in them that could have been used by humans. Its high quality ground water, suitable for drinking or irrigation. Reporter a staff attorney at the center for biological diversity in San Francisco says. In at least nine cases injection well operators have injected over 3 billion galons of toxic industry wastewater into aquifers that were clean and supposed to be protected. Reporter not only that, but according to these state records as many as 40 supply wells including domestic drinking wells are located within one mile of this reinjection well. These records note some of these wells are now possibly destroyed. Thats a huge concern. And communities that rely on water supply wells near these injection wells have a lot of reason to be concern that they are finding high levels of arsenic andthal yum in other chemicals nearby where these injection wells have been allowed to operate. Reporter we found this well across the road from several homes where state records show that wastewater from selfsources including the oil and gas industry has contaminated the aquifer below, where 60 different water supply wells are located. Western state control calls this a paperwork issue saying, quote, there has never been a bona fide claim or evidence presented that the paperwork confusion resulted in any contamination of drinking supplies near the disputed injection wells. I think there were 11 wells we ordered shut. Reporter jason marble the chief Deputy Director at Californias Department of conservation admits that mistakes were made and that the state did allow wastewater to be injected into aquifers that were supposed to be protected. There have been past issues where permits were issued to operators that they shun be injecting into those zones. We are fixing that. Reporter the state may made a mistake. Multiple places there could have been an error made. Reporter the issue has been considered so serious that it prompted the federal Environmental Protection agency to fire off this letter to californias epa and Natural Resources agency. It asked for a list of all water system wells or quote potential sources of Drinking Water that are at risk for contamination. It is a clear worry. Reporter ron is a Community Organizer in kern county for the center on race we are in a brought. Reporter the state even tested eight water supply wells located within a one mile radius of wastewater injection wells and four of those came back with higher than acceptable levels of chemicals. We are comparing the testing of what was the injection water to what is the tested water that came out of those wells to find out if what they found was background levels or whether thats wall toly the result of the oil and gas operation. So far, its looking like its background. Reporter but its entirely possible it to be and there could still be migration. When those test results come back we will know for sure snoou. Reporter how has this been personaled to occur in the first place . 1985, 1992, we have tried to go back and talk to some of the permitting engineers. In some cases they are deceased. No one should drink this water. The people are worried, scared, afraid. Reporter tom graham says what is happening under the ground where he farms is a disaster moving in slow motion and he worries about this and whats to come. The injection of wastewater is the obvious thing. Any failure anywhere and our aquifer is damaged and that will spread out horizontally for the next 100 years. Reporter the operators of those wells have been warned and they continue to test those wells and that water. You can see a map of all the injection wells as well as read the epas full letter and the states full response, plus the full statement from the western States Petroleum association.
