At its peak the line to get on the train stretched around the building and down two city blocks. Im just hoping to get home by midnight. Reporter caltrain commuters had a lot of company in San Francisco tonight. The line felt a mile long. It just kept going and going and going. Reporter standing in line to board a train for over an hour with a crush of giants fans heading home from the teams celebration. I think ill probably work from home if they do this again. This is crazy. Getting home is going to be a two, threehour ordeal. Reporter at its peak, the line stretched from 4th to 6th street. Eric mcchrystal says he enjoyed the parade but wont be back for another. I did the daytona 500. I will never do that again. I did this one, ill never do this one again. Reporter caltrain added extra service and suspended the regular schedule, trying to keep up with demand. Were loading trains. As soon as theyre filled were sending them off. Were moving as quickly as we can. We understand people are frustrated but were doing the best we can to move the lines. Reporter bart also added extra service. Trains crowded with people in giants gear and Halloween Costumes seemed to keep moving. Its not too bad. Pretty good. Reporter while hundreds of thousands of people left San Francisco, city crews worked to clean up the mess left behind. Clearing the way for another celebration, a halloween night critical mass. As for caltrain, the agency says it set a ridership record on giants parade day in 2012. It says well have to wait and see if the parade today helped set a new record. The search is on for a hitandrun driver who killed three girls as they were trick or treating this evening. The girls were in a crosswalk when the driver hit them. Witnesses say that driver was going at a high rate of speed. And it happened just after dark in santa ana. Police may have found an suv involved in that hitandrun, are now looking for a driver and passenger from that suv. The girls were all 13 years old. And two of them sisters. Some tragic news now in the state of washington. One week after that shooting at a High School Campus another victim has died from her injuries. 14yearold s h ale ale, kruckilnasit died. She was shot when another student opened fire on a campus 40 miles north of seattle. Two students are still hospitalized. The school was closed all week. The kids are supposed to go back to class on monday. We now know what an Illegal Drug Lab caused a powerful explosion at a walnut creek apartment building. Paramedics took two men to the hospital with critical burn injuries. Another man had minor burns. Everyone has been accounted for, but tonight dozens of people are homeless. Investigators found burned and exploded butane canisters inside the apartment. Think say the materials were used in marijuana and hash oil production. All of the units in that building are now uninhabitable. Theres so much debate about Police Officers using their guns in the line of duty. Now a local company has a way to track an officers movements, specifically when they draw their gun. Its being tested right now. Nbc bay area ian cole has the details from santa cruz. Reporter in a deputys day, seconds matter. Sometimes the difference between life and death, its why the Santa Cruz CountySheriffs Office is testing new technology, a small chip in deputy handguns. Its developed by yard arm technologies in capitola. That chip can alert dispatch and the station every time the gun is pulled out of the holster or fired in real time. It also shows the exact time and location so backup can be on the way in seconds. That little piece of electronics connects to gun now to the cloud. And from there we can do a lot of things with it. We can alert officers who are nearby. We can alert the commander that one of his officers has used his firearm in the line of duty. Reporter Technology DeputyDaniel Robbins needed a few weeks ago, chasing a suspect into a backyard with his gun drawn he accidentally gave dispatch the wrong address. Very uncommon that my beat partner happened to be right around the corner from me. He was able to see where i was running. Reporter luckily no one was hurt. Here comes flu season. Last year alone the flu killed more than 300 people statewide. The Health Department spends a lot of time and money to fight this virus. Now weve learned that thousands of taxpayer funded flu shots go to waste every year. Nbc bay area vicky winn reports on what she uncovered. Reporter guys, we note state provides thousands of vaccines every year to county Health Departments to limit the spread of flu. But when we looked at how many vaccines actually make it out to the public we found a lot of waste and very little oversight. Now Health Experts are raising concerns if counties cant handle routine distribution of flu vaccine how will they respond to another disease outbreak . Are you ready . Come sit over here with me. Reporter Alameda County launch launched shoo the flu. Its a campaign to distribute thousands of flu vaccines over the next months and its working. Alameda county ranks first in the state for how little vaccine is wasted each season. Estimates we have from 110 to 190,000 illnesses in Alameda County are caused by flu every year. Reporter dr. Erica penn is director of Disease Control and planning. She says they work with 22 partners ranging from clinics to homeless shelters. I think we and our partners are proactive, yes. Reporter but not all counties appear to be as proactive. The Investigative Unit looked at the past five years of vaccine usage data from the state Health Department. We found on average more than 88,000 vaccines go unused each year throughout the state. Every year the state provides free flu vaccines to each county based on potential demand. But unlike other vaccines, the flu vaccine is only good for state records reveal a wide variance between unused vaccine rates ranging from an average 1 in Alameda County to 23 from Orange County to 38 in calaveras county. That begs the question as to why are some counties doing so well and other counties not so well . Reporter ucsf epidemiologist says all counties need to have an effective system for district vaccine, not only for flu but also because its practice for any outbreak. If we cant get it right with flu we wont be in any position if a more serious disease outbreak occurs. This certainly is a great trial run for us to really ramp up if and when we ever need to. So lets hope to get this right. We need to get this right. Reporter in the bay area, marin and Solano County had 19 of unused vaccine. Were aiming to use and give out all of our doses of vaccine. Reporter Danielle Hiser is marin countys immunization coordinator. She wasnt in charge of distribution in 2011 when the department reported 38 of its vaccines went unused. She says shes adding more clinics to get more vaccines off the shelves. Last year we returned only 5 of our doses, which is great. And thats definitely a huge improvement. Reporter while all counties are required to report their numbers to the state, we found that none of the counties we spoke with had any idea how they compared. There is virtually no oversight from the say the. We dont want to waste taxpayers money by having vaccine go to waste. Reporter at around 11 a dose, unused vaccines have kost the state at least 5. 9 million since 2009. The state Health Department declined our request for an interview. But after we started asking for data the state began requiring counties to report vaccine usage rates in the winter and summer to better track the numbers. Fear gripping the east coast at the cdc. Reporter with the ebola virus now making headlines and with a vaccine currently in the works, she says its more important than ever for Public Health leaders to be prepared. If we were to have a vaccine and we need to get it out to the entire population quickly, the Influenza Program is the model. It is the model. Winds will gust up to 30 Miles Per Hour if we get any thunderstorms developing. That may also produce some small hail as well. Lets go ahead and take you into the forecast of this. You can see in the rain cast in the overnight hours at 1 00 possibility of a few showers down there in the south bay. What youre going to notice here is as we advance this, by 4 00 a. M. Well start to see a lot of activity bubble up. Now, most of the models at at this point has a lot of this heading south. A slight chance a little could come our way across san jose and most likely the santa cruz mountains. Chance of isolated activity through about 9 00 in the morning. Most of it across the santa cruz mountains. By 1 00 were trying to shape the activity. But with the upperlevel of low pressure spiralling across Central California well still keep a slight chance through 1 00 p. M. After that by the evening hours i think eventually well begin to clear out. Saturday night into sunday much drier weather. So into your microclimate forecast for your saturday forecast, again the best chance of activity across the south bay also the peninsula, temperatures cold in the 60s. You need that jack e.
