And this trip is drawing a little bit of criticism. Here at the airport tonight there was the usual tight security at sfo. But unlike most visits, there was no one at the bottom of the stairs to welcome him. The president is here raising money for the Democratic National committee, specifically, for democrats running for congress in the midterm elections. While he is collecting checks, there are lots of things happening around the world that demand the attention from the commander in chief. Political analyst says the president can handle both roles and has a duty to do. So but republicans say mr. Obama should change his plans and focus on pressing world issues. I would say right now is particularly an inopportune time. We have a serious war almost going on in israel and america under attack by russia. He is the leader of the democratic party. And parties need money to buy tv time to successfully campaign. So he is helping out the congress in this case. Reporter mr. Obama flew in from a fundraising event in seattle. He will be raising cash in los altos tomorrow. Tickets for that event sold for 10,000 per person and 32,400 per couple. The event is hosted by philanthropist judely di and george. Other members of the California Democratic will be there. President obama is not just cashing in here in the bay area, he is also heading to los angeles tomorrow for another fundraiser. They want him to stand up for net neutrality, saying Internet Service providers should give unrestricted access. Thayer fighting for fcc proposal that would allow internet providers to offer faster connection speeds for a fee. We should note that nbc is on the other hand by comcast. For the first time in history, the faa banned u. S. Airlines from flying into and out of tel avivs airport. Delta Airlines Flight from new york to tel aviv is the first to divert from its flight plan after that ban. The faa is now worried about safety after a rocket landed within a couple of miles of the airport in tel aviv. Passengers say they are stranded with no other options to get out. The Santa Clara ValleyWater District board agreed to spend half million to hire as many as ten new people. Their job, responding to complaints after water waste and to help bring the overall Water Conservation to the 20 goal. And as a reminder that hey, its not a business as usual year. This is an exceptional drought. We have to take exceptional action. Reporter district management likes to call them water educators because they wont actually write tickets or enforce anything. Instead, theyll investigate, teach conservation, and report back to the wasters water company. Theyre the ones that enforce any ordinances, the city or the private retailer has in that area. Reporter the district also claims Research Shows these water educators will pay off. I would say that there are studies that have shown that education does lead to water savings. So we will continue to do that. And a couple of heirloom tomatoes. Reporter arborist disagrees and thinks the money should be spent on education. I think we have 2 Million People in the south bay that need to be educated amount. From what ive seen, most people dont know how to water a tree. He says showing people proper watering methods can save people hundreds of gallons of water. The new educators will start patrolling some time in late august. Ian cull, nbc bay area news. Showers, landry and dishes may not sound like fun, but People Living in a east bay apartment complex are happy to do all of it tonight. The spring house in pleasanton had been without Running Water for four days. The property manager blames it on a steel pipe that burst underground on friday. He says he contacted five different plumbers before he was able to find one capable of fixing the job there are more than 300 units in the complex, and a lot of people taking baths tonight. A tragic day at the beach. A young man from san leandro was bury aid live when the tunnel he was digging collapsed. Adam pie was digging a hole with his friends in Half Moon Beach yesterday when witness says the 10foot deep tunnel collapsed. It took more than 30 minutes to dig him from the hole. After frantic efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead. It is one of those situations that can go from having a good time on the beach with friends and family to extremely dangerous and critical within seconds. Firefighters are using pies death to remind us all about the dangers associated with the beach, including the ones in the sand. An elderly woman is in the hospital tonight, this after a shooting in the Bayview District of San Francisco. Several bullets hit a Senior Living center. The manager says the woman was hurt when a bullet flew through her window. She was able to take the elevator down from her apartment and told the staff about what was happening. Police blocked off the intersection of third and mckinnon for hours during this investigation. Was in the middle of the evening commute. Detectives are investigating whether a nearby hitandrun crash may be involved in this shooting. Now arrests at this hour have been announced. There are new recruits to help san joses Ongoing Police shortage. But there is a catch. These new officers arent real Police Officers. For the first time, san jose has hired Community Service officers. The idea is to give Police Officers some help by writing reports and responding to minor crimes. Theyll also help with noninjury Car Accidents and crowd control at special events. The Community Officers will wear uniforms similar to traditional officers and will carry pepper spray instead of guns. Were hoping that it does allow the officers that are out there, our sworn officers, it helps them become more available for emergency calls for service, Proactive Police work that will ultimately help reduce Violent Crime in the city. The 25 recruits will hit the streets after they complete eight weeks of training. A potential problem for students who attend pinole valley high school. The School District is concerned that the temporary high school that is being erected may not be ready when the year begins august 18th. There was a problem with the soil that the portables are being put on. The Old High School closed down back in june. It will be torn down to make room for a new 125 million facility. But thats not slated to open for another three years. The district president is also concerned about providing lunch for his students. We know the county Health Services still has not approved the set of conditions for the kitchen facility. And ive been notified by the associate superintendent that theyll have a contingency plan because they dont believe it will be available to midseptember. It happened when a huge insurance sign being towed by a plane came loose and fell directly on their house in fremont. But last friday when this was all going down, there were people concerned out here. Imagine a 40footwide, 19foot long banner coming out of the sky and landing right on top of your house. Its exactly what happened when susan clark was watching. And i heard a loud thump. Reporter thats what it sounded like, and this is what it looked like when the 4,000squarefoot Geico Insurance banner broke loose from the plane and landed on sarah clarks house. When it happened clark had no idea what had happened. When i looked through front gate, i could see a white object. It thought it was pouring down rain. It sounded like a windstorm or rain, but i knew it wasnt raining. Reporter so she looked out the back door. I saw a gigantic piece of fabric over our gazebo. According to various Chinese Media outlet, Eric Slighton shown here is the soninlaw of a former top official in hong kong. Slighton was arrested last week for being drunk in public. The investment banker was taken into custody at a security checkpoint inside the International Terminal at sfo. Detectives are looking into reports that he may have patted down two women in a private screening room. Sheriffs Officials Say the women are of asian descent and possibly in their 40s. So far no victims have actually come forward. The website for a Hong Kong Investment firm lists slighton as a partner there. His online boy owe lists him as a comerah solutions. Hell be arraigned next week. In San Francisco, think before you drink. Voters will decide whether to pay more for sodas and sugary drinks. The controversial soda tax will be on the november ballot. By a narrow 64 vote, the supervisors approved putting the measure up for a vote. The two cents per ounce tack would raise more than 35 million a year. Most of the money raised would go towards health and nutritional programs. A health alert for the north bay. The risk of melanoma is higher in marin county than anywhere else in california. The Cancer Prevention institute of california is reporting that cases of melanoma are 43 higher in marin county than other parts of the bay area. Also, the death rate from melanoma in marin is 18 higher than the states. Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, and its now the second most diagnosed cancer for men in marin county. What began with a man looking for a safe place to sleep ended with him pleading for his life. He woke up trapped in a recyc recycling truck. It happened around 6 30 this morning. The driver of that truck says he was just a couple of hours into his shift when he heard pounding coming from the back of his truck. The driver drove to the nearest fire station where firefighters and paramedics worked quickly to find the man, who was buried under piles of cardboard. That guy could have been, if he hadnt heard him, he would have been trapped in that thing all day long and he may have died. He is a hero. He saved his life. Firefighters say the man was partially crushed by the trucks hydraulic system which is used to compact the recyclables. He was taken to the hospital future his injuries, mostly to the shoulder. As for the 20year veteran driver, he went back to work and he finished his shift. Lets throw things over to our meteorologist rob mayeda. The two microclimates the president will be wondering about, los altos. Well see cloudy skies over palo alto heading over to los altos. Those are the clouds that might drop a little bit of drizzle. But not lightning bolts. So thats some good news for the president who is in town for us tonight. You can see the mostly cloudy skies right now near palo alto. 65 degrees in san jose. Still in the mid60s for San Francisco. So kind of mild temperatures out there right now. It was about 12 hours ago or so we saw measurable rainfall for parts of the bay area. In fact, these numbers very significant when you take into account we usually do not add up anything in the rain gauge for the month of july. But San Francisco about 0. 05. Almaden a quick downpour, 0. 06. San jose measurable rainfall earlier. The statistics for San Francisco, this is the driest month of the year. We typically see a few monsoon showers once we get into august and september. And then the real rainy season gets started late october. This is bonus round coverage for the rainfall if we can manage anything this time of year. Now, we do have a chance of seeing mists at the low clouds which have pushed inland from napa towards fairfield, concord towards the dublin grade and patchy low clouds. Heading towards tomorrow morning, we will see mostly cloudy skies and probably some drizzle once again for the coast. But unlike this morning, what we dont have is a lot of mid level moisture and a weather system to promote vertical motion overnight into the morning. That system now has moved off to the north as we watch this next system coming in for tonight, a weaker system going to cross over ukiah. Any showers should stay north of mendocino tonight. And reinforce of seeing drizzle and mist around the bay area tomorrow morning. With the onshore flow increasing tomorrow morning, our best chance of seeing measurable rainfall. Not too far away from palo alto. Brief measurable light drizzle or brief light mist coming down at times tomorrow morning. Youll see some of that up towards santa rosa as well. But not the type of rainfall totals we saw this morning. Tomorrow well have a cloudy start to the day, and then the day is going to change rapidly once we head towards the afternoon. Mostly cloudy skies. Some drizzle at times for your morning commute and nothing but sunshine, even for the coast by the afternoon tomorrow. Which hints at the big warmup that will be on the way that warmup Getting Started for thursday. And that is when our temperatures are really going to start to climb. Tomorrow highs pretty close to what we had today. You notice our inland locations in the 70s to low 80s. Thursday is really the first day of about four that well see the mid90s inland and possibly by friday and saturday, we could see the temperatures vaulting up close to 100 degrees around sunol, pleasanton and livermore.
