Reporter this community is really sensitive because they know what its like to have hundreds of homes go up in flames in a day or two. Its pretty hard to show, but im standing in front of a canyon where a few of the fires broke out today. As you can see, it is really dry out here. The folks who live around here are concerned that someone might be out there starting these fires. Tonight were going to have an engine down at the area, the canyon area where we had the earlier fires to make sure there is no flareups and to keep a presence in the area. Reporter the presence in the area where fire erupted in five locations in the Oakland Hills off park boulevard this afternoon. We rode along tonight with battalion chief lisa baker. All our companies throughout the whole city are on a heightened alert right now. Reporter investigators are calling todays fires suspicious because three of the fires originated on the trail deep in the canyon. Fire Officials Say two of the smaller fires may have been started by flying embers. The brush is extremely dry. Last week we had extremely warm weather. Reporter and on friday, fire crews put out another two suspicious fires in a location nearby. Today, with help from above, it took fire crews a couple of hours to put out the first two fires, but not before she got pictures of the smoke coming her way. We just had a fire less than a week ago on the other side. Ive live heard 27 years. I havent had a fire ever. Not that and mnow in less thn a week, two . Something is wrong. Reporter an arsonist . Perhaps. She is ready with her backpack, equipped with water and food, just in case. It could have been worse. It could have been a lot worse. The canyon is dry, and the wind was blowing. And you can see they would get some of the fire out and the fire would start building. Reporter fire official says they know where three of the fires started, but the cause of the fires are still under investigation. New at 11 00, more fallout after the fiery limo accident on the san mateo bridge. It killed a bay area bride and four women. A state audit slams californias oversight of limb moses, charters and shuttle buses. Lawmakers requested the report after the report on the bridge last year. The audit said investigators are not doing enough to make Passenger Carriers are complying with safety requirements. It also adds the California PublicUtilities Commission is take together long to open commissions and resolve complaints against carriers. A who is watching who in fremont. Tonight Fremont Police were given the green light. Theyll be able to track people coming in and out of town in an effort to reduce crime. But some residents are crying foul. The surveillance cameras causing controversy here in fremont and tiburon, pittsburg, piedmont, and menlo park. I got to tell you, police are convinced they reduce crime. But there are some people who just dont like the idea of somebody always watching them. In the words of ben franklin, they who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. In the end, the Fremont City Council unanimously approved a plan that will spend 300,000 to install surveillance cameras in a dozen locations in the city. Most of them will be along or near 880. Others on 680, alvarado boulevard, and another at mission and mallory. Police say the pictures, video and license plates recorded will be used for two very specific purposes. Information provided by a victim or a witness that tended to describe who was responsible for a crime. And on those occasions be able to go back to the records and look for that person or vehicle or that partial license plate. Reporter police say they would also use the information in the event of multiple robberies or burglaries in a particular area. Investigators would go back to the data and look for people leaving the city mere the time the crimes were committed. And Diverse Communities like fremont, the risks of discriminatory targeting are acute. Just the video images will be kept for 30 days and the license plate data will be kept for a year unless it becomes direct evidence in a pending criminal case. Reporter one longtime fremont resident had her own version of privacy concerns. Invasion of privacy is when a burglar breaks into your home, empties all your drawers and closets and dumps your possessions on the floor look for items that they will take from you. Reporter so those cameras going out to bid very soon. City council is going to make the final decision on which gets to install them. Safety and security procedures are under review after the unexpected discovery at the Federal Building in downtown oakland. A bullet went through a second story window and ended up in the wall of a jury deliberation room. Fortunately, the building was empty at the time. Investigators say it was likely a stray bullet fired over the weekend. On his way to face justice, the suspected mastermind behind the attack on a u. S. Embassy in libya is in custody tonight. The pentagon announced today that Ahmed Khatallah was arrested by u. S. Special forces in a secret raid. He is believed to be the ringleader of the attack on the u. S. Embassy in benghazi on september 11th, 2012. The u. S. Ambassador to libya, Chris Stevens who is a berkeley native was killed along with three other americans. President obama says the arrest sends a message. That when americans are attacked, no matter how long it takes, we will find those responsible, and we will bring them to justice. Khatallah is now aboard a u. S. Warship being questioned by interrogators. The family of ambassador stephens telling us today, quote we really have no comment there is nothing for us to add or to say about it there is nothing that can be done to undo the tragedy. A father who lost his son in that deadly rampage near the ucsb campus Uc Santa Barbara went to the capitol today to spread the word on gun violence. Richard martinez joined other parents and survivors of shootings including sandy hook, aurora and virginia tech. They started a campaign for americans to send postcards to elected officials with the words not one more written on them. People dont understand and put a human face on it. People who died in the situations, it becomes all about the shooter and the victims become numbers. And until people realize what ive lost and what my family has lost, then they wont be motived to act. Seven people died in last months isla vista rampage, including the gunman. A followup now to a polarizing issue about punishment for junts. The vote on audreys law has been delayed until next week. The bill could redefine rape laws. State lawmakers say the legislation needs more work. The current version would require a minimum twoyear sentence for minors convicted of sexually assaulting someone who is disabled or unconscious. The bill was named for audrey pott who was a student at saratoga high. In 2012, three boys sexually assaulted her while she was unconscious and then photographed her. The pictures were circulated around saratoga high, and she later took her own life. The boys served 30 to 45 days behind bars. Happening now, crews are fogging for mosquitos carrying west nile virus. The fogging started a few minutes ago in san joses willow glen neighborhood as well as parts of campbell. This comes after the recent discovery of some adult mosquitos infected with west nile. Team brazil ended up in los gatos in 1994 by accident, and the players attracted thousands of fans who filled this plaza and the streets and kicked the party in this town into high gear. The best party ive ever been at. Partying and dancing in the streets here in los gatos. Reporter ask soccer fans in los gatos about the 1994 world cup, and they light up. This is Youtube Video of just one of many street parties that erupted there during the summer of soccer. But i had no idea how big it would become. Reporter randy was the mayor when team brazil made headlines for deciding to stay in los gatos when the United States hosted the world cup. The team was supposed to choose from San Francisco, oakland, and santa cruz, but they lunched in los gatos while scouting sights and fell in love. Supersonic jets that fly faster than the speed of sound are not allowed over the continental u. S. , mainly over concerns over sonic booms created by the aircraft. But researchers in at nasa in Mountain View are Testing Technology that would minimize the sonic booms. They plan to present their findings at a conference this week in atlanta. The last commercial supersonic flight was in 2003 when a concord jet landed at Londons Heathrow airport. Bringing a zombie back to life. A small team of engineers at nasa are taking on the challenge of rebooting an old space probe. The International SunEarth Explorer which was launched in 1978 once measured the gravitational pull of the sun and even tracked a comet. The team, which has been working out of a shut down mcdonalds on nasas mountainview campus says it loves a good challenge. The idea of taking a disco satellite, you know, and trying to make it work again appeals to the hacker mentalities. Nasa engineers which use crowd funding to green light this project say time is an issue in retrieving the spacecraft. They fear it may soon disappear into the depths of space. Rumor has it, no more adele on youtube. A fight between google and some Record Companies could mean the music videos of the popular british singer and other artists may go offline. Youtube is creating its own paid streaming service and is negotiating with artists for their cut of the money. The Video Streaming Company says 95 of musicians have already signed deals. The Artists Holding out say they want better terms, and of course more money. Youtube says their music videos could be removed in a matter of days if they dont sign these new deals. Okay. And you can see its continuing right now. Some of the coldest weather up into the north bay. We have 56. Its about 10 degrees cooler than most of the other locations. Now the reason why, weve got a lot less wind in the atmosphere. So thats less temperature. Again, fogfree conditions in San Francisco with 68. Wind out of the west at 9 00 in the east bay. So winds have calmed down. But still some elevated fire concern. And you can see here across the south bay, tenmile and plus visibility. Currently 62. And also some calmer winds. Lets get you in the forecast as we head throughout wednesday. We are going to have some notable changes. As we start off here, what you want the take a look at first is the fog data that were currently getting in. We have a marine layer out here. Areas of cloud cover. But its not very thick. And were also not seeing much of that cloud cover move in across the bay. So fairly clear skies right now. Is the first part of our warming story for tomorrow. Now, the second thing that were seeing happening is this area of high pressure. Its going start to move right on top of california. Its going to import some heat. And thats going to give our temperatures a little bit of a rise here. Now, not everybody is going to get extremely hot. In fact, were only expecting a few isolated 90s in the forecast. Overall its going to bring some widespread temperature extremes. Lets take a look at the microclimate forecast as we head through 90. Not quite 90 in san jose. Youre going to be this the middle zone of the forecast. A slight wind off the bay should keep you at 85 degrees. As you get farther away from the bay, saratoga, cupertino, likely close to 94 degrees. Some of the hottest weather in the valley. For the peninsula, a little onshore flow cutoff. Palo alto jumping up to 85. But in San Francisco, right near that ocean breeze, youll stay in the 60s for tomorrow. Check out haze valley. 69. You got sunny skies. It is going to feel like the low 70s if youre out in that sun. Take you to the north bay, east bay and the try valley. Napa at 87. Youre headed towards sausalito, 72 degrees. But certainly an awesome day. And if youre out here in oakland, 75. Youre traveling on 24 back into walnut creek, the thermometer is going to jump up there. And pretty quickly likely near 90 in walnut creek. And some of the best possibility of 90degree temperatures would be in the trivalley. Forecasting 89 in pleasanton. Lets take you into the fiveday trend. I think youre going to love what you see here across san jose, if youre out here the next couple of days. Temperatures are going to cool off by thursday, friday, and saturday. And mix of upper 70s and also low to mid80s. So not extremely hot in san jose. And for San Francisco, well go with the 60s. Now, we did have the brushfires again in oakland for today. So i do want to wrap things up with our wind forecast for hills above a thousand feet that is where well have the highest fire threat through friday. Its not an extreme windstorm, so to speak, but winds will be to about 18 Miles Per Hour with the highest fire threatening northeast and also the south bay hills.
