You can see the traffic lights are out in many areas, including the la habra area. You can see the streets just filled with water. At this hour the l. A. Fire department is still out looking for damage in la habra and surrounding cities, looking for more water main breaks. So far no reports of injuries. Seismologists told me a few minutes ago that locals there should be prepared for lots of seismic action over the next several days. There will be more aftershocks. This seems to be an active sequence. There is a probability, about 1 in 20 chance of a larger earthquake occurring now. Be prepared for a little rock n roll action. Now, so far, again, dozens of aftershocks. Many of those in the mid 3. 0 range. Rob joins us now to talk about more details. The earthquake happening in a fairly densely populated area. The impacts being widespread from eastern Los Angeles County into northern Orange County. You can see the bulls eye for most impacted areas right there out near disneyland, anaheim, la habra, palmdale, santa ana, northern Orange County as we did see this earthquake roughly the center or the focus 4. 7 miles deep, with intense shaking in northern Orange County. Not just the 5. 1 earthquake but dozens of aftershocks. The sequence pretty impressive. Weve seen 54 reports right before and after the earthquake of 1. 0 or larger. Some larger ones, 3. 6, 3. 4 and a 2. 9. What was interesting about this quake, an hour before there was a 3. 6. This is an example where you have a smaller quake followed by a bigger one and bigger one at 9 09 in the evening. You can see the yarl impacted by this and very likely with an earthquake of this size, Strong Enough to give you some moderate damage that could break pipes or gas lines and cause cracks to some buildings. Youll see the fire crews inspecting the bridges and freeways and overpasses all throughout Orange County. Likely well see earthquakes as big as possible 4. 0, national aftershock sequence of a quake this size. Disneyland, very close to the epicenter, immediately after this earthquake all rides were shut down. The Fireworks Show was canceled and thousands of people started leaving the park voluntarily. We were just standing in line for the matterhorn and the ground was shaking and it was like the ground was swaying back and forth and the trees were going back and forth. We were looking around like, is this an earth quake . Is this the ride . Whats going on. Pretty good description from tammy rose. She mentioned she was in line for the matterhorn. Moderate earthquake hitting in Orange County at 9 00 followed by dozens of other aftershocks. Were beginning to talk to agencies in los angeles to check on the damage. Of course, well bring you more information later in this newscast. A 49er with a troubled past has been arrested in the south bay. Chris culliver, who made headlines more than a year ago with antigay remarks is now accused of hitandrun. Police say he hit a bicyclist and then threatened a good samaritan. The hitandrun in san jose, about 40 miles from 49ers headquarters on tully road. They later found culliver near happy hollow zoo. Nannette joins us from the crash scene. Reporter i spoke with attorney who represents a witness who saw the crash happen here behind me this morning. According to the attorney, the witness followed Chris Culliver to get a license plate. Apparently he didnt have a license plate number. But culliver did catch up to the witness and at some point the Attorney Says culliver pulled out something shiny and this witness was very concerned for his safety and his child. 49er quarterback Chris Culliver made bail posting 36,000. The 25yearold spent hours here in a jail cell, arrested for hitting a bicyclist and leaving the scene. Cullivers charges include felony hitandrun, possession of brass knuckles and driving with a suspended license. The accusations are disappointing 49er fan. Cant go around hitting people, trying to run and do all that stuff. So i definitely think its bad for him and bad for the organization. Reporter the crash happened here at tully road and south 7th road in san jose, an intersection known to bicyclists. Police say after he hit a person on a bike, he drove off and hit a witnesss car during the getaway. The witness followed culliver to this nearby culdesac. I heard screeching. Reporter richard heard noises outside his home. I see a white mustang facing that way and it was stopped. There was a black suv facing this way. Reporter police say the witness blocked culliver from leaving until officers could arrive. I thought it was just like an everyday regular arrest. We dont have nfl players out here. Reporter the 49ers released a statement in part saying, the 49ers organization is aware of the recent matter involving Chris Culliver. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will reserve further comment at this time. Really just, i guess, not thinking or something i thought but nothing i feel in my heart. Culliver made headlines last year when he said during super bowl media day that he didnt want gays in the locker room. He spent last season out because of a torn acl. 49ers have been eyeing culliver for a starting cornerback position for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, the bicyclist is okay with minor injuries. Meanwhile, notorious chinatown criminal raymond chow is expected back in court next week. Many call shrimp boy served time in prison in 1990s. He convinced everyone, almost everyone, that he was a changed man. Tonight were hearing from people who say he really did some good work with youths at risk. Reporter raymond chow grew up in a gang here in San Francisco and served time in prison, when he was released and came back to San Francisco, he spent time at the youth center telling kids, theres a different path, a better way. Some kids say he changed their lives. I feel like he still, you know, possibly didnt do what he did, you know what i mean . If he did, then i will be really, really hurt. Reporter rudy doesnt want to believe raymond chow, or shrimp boy, is once again tangled up in a life of crime. He says chow inspired atrisk youth at united players like no one else. Thats chow outside the clubhouse in 2012. Actually, he let them know that no matter how bad you did, you can transition into something good. And i respect him for that. Raymond was just a plus. Reporter 26yearold sal remembers what he was doing when chow came around. In and out of jail. You know, on the streets. Reporter he says the softspoken, notorious criminal, captivated his young audience. Convincing them, there was a way out of gangs and a life of crime in a tenderloin. The magnitude of the person he was and where he came, from you know, it was eyeopening, a person like that can change. So, if he can change, i can change. Reporter he now works at united players. He gives a lot of people credit for saving his life. And chow is one of them. Probably wouldnt be here right now. Reporter he and 15yearold elijah corpus say they are grateful chow shared his story. As soon as i heard his story i was like, well, im going to change my life. I dont want to end up in prison or stuff like that, getting killed. Reporter time will tell if chow is heading back to prison. No matter what, he has respect at the clubhouse. Because theres so many kids who believe in him. Reporter chow is expected back in court on monday. He is being held with no bail because the judge says hes a flight risk and a danger to the community. I want to give you update on breaking news out of the l. A. Area. Tonight srl earthquakes, the largest 5. 1 magnitude that hit after 9 00. Because the earthquake was a shallow one, it was felt for miles. It was centered in la habra, in Orange County not far from disneyland. A map here taking a look at the magnitude of this. The impact felt for miles. No damages, no injuries thus far but there are a lot of flooded streets in terms of water main breaks and a lot of traffic in l. A. Because of the traffic lights are out, especially in the la habra area. You see the damage here at a trader joes store in la habra. A 5. 1 quake with several aftershocks in los angeles tonight. Theyre expecting more aftershocks through the next several hours. Lucky to be alive and incredibly close call for a man who may have been saved by a need for a nap. A propane canister came across the sky and landed in his backseat of the car while he dozed off. Boy, talk about a wakeup call. Reporter thats right, jessica. Can you imagine, sitting in your car, leaning back, just resting, waiting for your shift to start and then, kaboom well, it happened to a San Francisco man. He is smiling tonight but i can tell, hes really shaken up. Oh, my goodness. Reporter Jose Castille couldnt wait to show me the pictures. This is the canister, the tank of propane. Reporter that canister is the reason why his brand new hon honda, barely a week old, is now a hunk of twisted metal. Every morning i go early, i dont want to catch traffic. Reporter so he parks outside of his job in san leandro and catches a nap before going into work. Today he set the alarm on his cell phone for 6 58. When the alarm went off, i heard the noise. I mean, the big explosion. And all the buildings shake. Reporter dazed and confused. Then he looked up. Oh, man, and i see the sky inside of the car. The roof was gone. Reporter alco metal and steel was recycling a propane canister across the street. They thought it was empty, but it wasnt. It traveled at least 100 yards and crashed into his car. Jose says, if he didnt lean forward and turn that alarm off, the canister could have killed him. After seeing the car, joses son says, hes amazed his father wasnt seriously hurt. When i drove in and look the at it, i was kind of tearing down, but he calmed me down, relax. We had to celebrate hes alive, you know. Reporter jose walked away with it all with only a scratch on his forehead. s a great guy. Hes like the nicest person in the world. Short guy with a big heart, you know what i mean . California Lottery Commission is considering a program to allow people to buy certain lottery tickets right there at the gas pump. The play at the pump program would be tested in sacramento and l. A. You would have to verify your age and buy gas before you could buy those lotto tickets at the pump. The Lottery Commission still has to okay this project. Lets check in with meteorologist rob. I spoke to that seismologist and says there was an earthquake back in 1987. I remember that. I was in high school at that time and that quake made the car feel like it had four flat tires on the way to school. That was a strong earthquake before the northridge quake in 84 which was 6. 4 in san fernando valley. Theres a series of thrust faults off to the north and west. This one in parts of northern Orange County tonight, seeing the strongest shaking there. Perhaps on the southern end of that Whittier Narrows fault which would take it close to la habra in the hills close to san gabriel, around disneyland. These areas very likely will continue to have checks for gas line breaks or water main breaks. Weve seen several reports of that and some video from our sister station in los angeles. If a quake of this size, 5. 0, with a rather shall dough depth, depending on the soil, if its set men tear soil, that can amplify the shaking. This location here certainly got biggest punch out of this earthquake. There was a 3. 6 quake about an hour before. Every once in a while, you hear us talk about these earthquakes, sometimes you can have a smaller quake followed up by a larger one. That was the case tonight in Southern California and well likely see the aftershock sequence play out with 3. 0 or 4. 0 aftershocks. We have rain finally reaching the north bay. Throughout the night the winds will continue to pick up. Winds at 20 miles an hour. Rain has been slow to arrive. Light rain in santa rosa. In the futurecast it picks it up pretty well. Watch what happens tomorrow night as you wake up, heavy rain at times. I wont rule out a slight chance of a thundershower even with that frontal boundary as it pushes through. And later in 3 00 in san jose, you may have isolated thunder. The skies clear out sunday, obviously the dryer half of the weekend forecast. Round one of perhaps three rounds of rain, will bring half an inch for most locations. Sierra, snow up to 2 feet. Winter snow warning will continue through early sunday morning. Saturday we have the rain. Sunday we should see it clear out. Monday, another storm coming down the coast. That will give us rain, a brief break heading into wednesday and perhaps another chance for seeing rain on thursday. Tomorrow morning, very rainy at times, gusty winds and a chance of seeing thunder at time. South bay will be the last to clear. I think it will be north of San Francisco that will see sunshine bit afternoon. Much cooler start to the weekend. Sevenday forecast shows sunday looks good. More rain due in on monday. Well bring you more from different locations. After years of testing on animals doctors are trying to suspend animation on humans, keeping them in a state between life and death. Surgeons at a Pennsylvania Hospital are using the procedure on patients with traumatic injury. The process involves replacing the patients blood with the cold saline solution and bringing their temperatures down. The patient would be clinically dead, but that gives doctors several hours to fix the injury, get blood back into the system and bring the person back to life. Doctors say theyll evaluate this process after they work on at least 20 people. British doctors announced the first documented case of people catches tuberculosis from their cats. That happened 28 miles east of los angeles but felt around a large swath of that area, from palm springs to the east, ven stur ra county in the north. As is normal, the roads are being checked and crews are inspecting bridges, overpasses, dams, any other type of infrastructure system to make sure everything is okay. So far, no signs of damage on those roads. Very little damage reported by any homeowners. Thats the good news. Really the issue now is the gas, floots floods and water mains. All the local stores, grocery stores, refrigerators at home, dozens of pictures being sent in to us of the damage across the area, especially in la habra, not too far from disneyland. Disneyland, most of the rides were shut down immediately after this quake. Weve been talking to seismologists. They say we have lots of aftershocks. We can expect many more. Many more in the 3. 0 range. This happened in a densely populated area so youre seeing damage reports magnified. A quake can produce moderate damage, cracks to buildings and breaks to water mains.
