Malaysia apparently going to the 777, which had 239 announce what the Associated Press is reporting, that missing passengers and crew on board, lost communication with the ground about an hour into its flight on march 8 from kuala lumpur to beijing. Radar signals appear to show the plane climbing to 45,000 feet after it disappeared from radar. The plane then turned west and information gathered from satellites suggests that the plane flew for hours. This presents a whole new series of questions as for where the plane is. Now searchers are zeroing in on a remote chain of islands in the indian ocean. Well keep you posted. Again, we are watching that News Conference closely and as soon as that the Prime Minister comes out and makes the confirmation, well bring it to you live. Could the pilot have hijacked his own aircraft . Could somebody else have been involved . So many questions still up answered. Lets bring in one of our reporters, steven stockton. Were awaiting this noose conference from the Prime Minister. Whatever he says, what is the trustworthiness of this . Because theres so much speculation. Reporter absolutely, and there has been for almost a week. But we can tell you what we know, and that is these Communication Systems that Monty Francis received to were switched off about 20 minutes apart from each other, which leads investigators to leave that it had to be human beings that did that. It wasnt an explosion. It wasnt an accident or those systems would have gone down almost simultaneously. So either a person with an inside job or the pilot himself may have hijacked that airplane and taken over the airplane. Whoever did it had to know a lot about the Electronic Systems on board the 777 200 er. That was the plane. Experts tell me tonight, it could have been a combination of both scenarios. The reason, two different tracking systems were turned off on that airplane and not at the same time. The first system that was turned off, about an hour into the flight was the planes transponders. Thats the signal that it sends out indicating its position to air traffic controllers. Then you just see whats called the acars system. Thats a different system, and the source told me tonight, he, by the way, flies 777s, so he knows, he tells me that in order to turn the acars systems off, that talks to the satellite, you have to go somewhere else besides the cockpit and you have to actually pull a Circuit Breaker or turn off a third radio, disable that. So you have to know what youre doing. This is much more complicated and indicates somebody with a high level of sophistication. Let me ask you the other scenario, that there may have been been an additional pilot on board. Its not uncommon for pilots to be able to come into the cockpit and fly in the seat. Thats right. And its not uncommon and its happened before, pilots with distress or financially in arrears have actually crashed the airplane, committed suicide with everyone else on board. So these are a lot of scenarios being looked at. One other piece of information we do know, and i heard this from a source just a few minutes ago, we know that these engines were rollsroyce engines. They have a separate Satellite Communications system and they ping a satellite. My source tells me that he flies these planes, and this when he lands, theres as much as 100 mega bytes of data that comes from the engines alone. We understand they may have been in communication with the satellite and that information may have helped people at least to focus on where this plane might be. Let me bring Something Else in. What about those two iranians with the other passengers . Could this open the door on the possibility that they werent just flying to . Absolutely. We understand that two other people were of questionable background and they are being looked at. So there could have been four people and if they were in cohoots, that could raise a lot of questions. I talked to an fbi source earlier this evening who says a lot of this is developing, even as we speak. And theyre monitoring it very closely. The potential here is very gray. If there is a plane somewhere in the jungles of australia or malaysia or india or one of these islands, that could pose a Real Security risk. If theyre this sophisticated, what else do they plan to do with that airplane . That has a lot of security folks the here and in israel and in london around the world concerned. And they are watching this very closely. It is a global concern. This is what were waiting for. The Prime Minister of malaysia was supposed to address reporters about this Associated Press report that that flight was hijacked. So were waiting for the Prime Minister to speak. He was supposed to address reporters at 10 00, so theyre more than 60 minutes behind schedule. So were waiting with you. Until that point, its pure speculation until he addresses what the Associated Press is reporting this evening. Again, speculation, but lets tell you what we know about the flights captain, he is 50, considered highly experienced, hes logged 18,000 flight hours. The copilot, 27 years old, considered relatively new, with only 2800 flight hours under his belt. Friends of hamids local mosque call him a respectful man, living with his parents, who was engaged and about to get married. Word is spreading quickly throughout other possibilities in terms of communications. The hijacked plane, the reports of this hijacked plane. Lets go out now to jean elle who joins us from sfo. Reporter the Sfo International Terminal is very busy with travelers. I talked with the duty manager and she says as far as she knows, there is no change to security here at sfo as the news spread that investigators believe the Malaysian Airlines jet was hijacked. We talked with people heading to taiwan and thailand and say while word that the plane was hijacked is very upsetting, it will not stop them from taking off. What a terrible, terrible thought. I never thought myself that could have been the outcome of this disaster happening to so many families, so many people. I have a couple of friends that were very nervous about us flying. But more people are killed by car crashes every day than airplanes. I am surprised, but i try not to be in fear about traveling and flying. I dont let it stop me. I think its an unusual occurrence. It said he was wanted for firing a semiautomatic gun last year. He turned himself in. Case made headlines back in december. Doctors at Childrens Hospital declared the 13yearold brain dead. Her family went to have went to court to have her body moved to another facility that would keep her on life support. Tonight, theyre angry with the report from the centers for medicare and Medicaid Services which concluded the hospital didnt violate any medical standards and they claim that while still unconscious, she continues to show signs of life. We havent seen any signs of bodily functions shutting down or skin changing colors. I cant tell you that she is going to make a complete recovery. I cant tell you that knew logically shes making a return. But i can tell you what this hospital was going to happen to her hasnt happened. We are not able to independently confirm claims about her condition. The family says it will move forward with a lawsuit against Childrens Hospital. Were learning more about a group of middle School Students allegedly caught sexting. If convicted, one student may have to register as a sex offender for life. The students are spread out between four middle schools. Police say they were sending each other half nude pictures of themselves. In one case a boy is accused of using a picture of a girl to force her into sex acts. When you hear on campus, there shouldnt be an opportunity for anything like that to go on. I am shocked. Theyre so young and i dont know what they were thinking. After this police investigation, the District Attorney will ultimately decide if charges will indeed be filed. We want to show you we want to go back to that Malaysian Airlines, a press News Conference is about to start. It appears it is about to start. This is in kuala lumpur. It is expected [ inaudible ] seven days ago, Malaysian Airlines flight 370 disappeared. We realize this is an excruciating time for the families of those on board. No words can describe the pain that must be going through. Our thoughts and our prayers are with them. I have an update for the ongoing search operation around the clock. At the beginning of the operation, i ordered the search area to be broadened. I instructed the malaysian authorities to share all the relevant information transparentally with a wider Investigation Team. And i requested that our friends and our allies join the operation. As of today, 14 countries, 43 ships and 58 aircraft are involved in the search. I wish to thank all the governments for their help at such a crucial time. Since day one, the malaysian authorities have worked hand in hand with our international partners, including neighbors countries. The aviation authorities and a multinational search force. Many of whom have been here on the ground since sunday. We have shared information in real time with shorts, who have the necessary experience. We have been working nonstop to assist the investigation. And we have put our National Security second in search for the missing plane. It is widely understood that this has been a situation without precedent. We have conducted Search Operations over land, in the South China Sea, the straits of malacca, and the indian ocean. At every stage we acted on the basis of verified information, and we followed every credible lead. There has been intense speculation. We understand the desperate need for information. On what have of the families and those watching around the world. But we have a responsibility to the investigation and the families to only release information that has been corroborated. And our primary motivation has always been to find the plane. In the first stage of the search operation, we searched near the last known position. In the South China Sea. At the same time, it was brought to our attention by the air force that based on their primary radar, and aircraft, the identity of which could not be confirmed, made a turn back. The primary radar data showed the aircraft proceeding on a flight path which took it to an area north of the straits of malacca. Given this credible data, which was subsequently corroborated with the Relevant International authorities, we expanded the area of search to include the straits of malacca and later to the sea. Early this morning i was briefed by the Investigation Team, which includes the faa, ntsb, the aaib, the malaysian authorities, and the acting minister of transport on new information that shed further light on what happened to flight 370. Based on satellite communication, we can say with a high degree of certainty that the Aircraft Communications addressing and reporting systems or acars was disabled just before the aircraft reached the east coast of the peninsula. Shortly afterwards, near the border between malaysia and vietnam, air traffic control, the aircrafts transponder was turned off. From this point onward, the Royal Malaysian Air force ground radar data showed that an aircraft, which was believed but not confirmed to be flight 370 did, indeed, turn back. It then flew in a westerly direction back over the peninsula of malaysia before turning northwest. Up until the point at which it left military radar coverage, this movement is consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane. Today, based on raw satellite data, which was obtained from the Satellite Data Service provider, we can confirm that the aircraft shown was flight mh 370. After much forensic work and deliberation, the faa, ntsb, aaib, and the malaysian authorities working separately on the same data concur. According to the new data, the last confirmed communication between the plane and the satellite was at 8 11 p. M. Malaysian time. On saturday the 8th of march. The Investigation Team is making further calculations, which whether indicate how far the aircraft may have flown after the last point of contact. This will help us to refine the search. Due to the type of satellite data, we are unable to confirm the precise location of the plane when it last made contact with a satellite. However, based on this new data, the aviation authorities of malaysia and their International Counterparts had determined that the planes last communication with a satellite was in one of two possible corridors. A northern corridor stretching from the border of kazakhstan to northern thailand. Or the southern corridor, stretching approximately from indonesia to southern indian ocean. The Investigation Team is working to further refine the information. In view of this latest development, the malaysian authorities have refocused their investigation into the crew and passengers on board. Despite media reports that the plane was hijacked, i wish to be very clear. We are still investigating all possibilities as to what caused flight 370 to deviate from its original flight path. This new satellite information has Significant Impact on the nature and scope of the search operation. We are ending our operations in South China Sea and reassessing the redeployment of our assets. We are working with the relevant countries to request all information relevant to the search, including radar data. As to the two new corridors youre listening live now to the Prime Minister of malaysia, speaking live. It is saturday afternoon there. And hes talking about what we have been reporting. A few takeaways from what wes saying here. Despite those reports of hijacking, the Prime Minister saying they still havent ruled out any other possibilities. So theyre still investigating all possibilities, despite the report from the Associated Press. However, he is leading to a lot of the things that the ap is reporting. The Prime Minister saying it appears that the evidence they have gotten, the faa, ntsb and malaysian authorities have concurred that given what happened on the aircraft and the radar and the different things, was a deliberate action by someone on the plane. Lets bring in steven stock. These are the things you were talking about. Theyre concluding that the transponders were turned off and that the acars. Thats right. It may not be a conclusive hijacking, but you heard the Prime Minister as you just staid, jessica, said it is consistent with deliberate action by someone on the airplane. That clearly narrows the scope of what exactly may have gone on, on this plane. Another significant thing that just came out of this News Conference is that they are now focusing on two corridors. One that stretches from kazakhstan and turkmenistan all the way to thailand. And one from malaysia to the east coast of india. Thats a lot of space to search. Clearly they believe the satellite data leads them to believe that the plane took these actions. One other point to note, it does appear from what he said, it confirms earlier reports by ap and by some british news magazines that whoever was flying this plane may have even taken evasive action. They came back west and when they headed into vietnam radar space, they turned northwest, like they knew where they were going in order to fly around this radar. It certainly seems to lead to that indication these folks were sophisticated. The News Conference is over. No questions. He walked right off the stage and he was clear to say this was a joint conclusion. Also he said the aaib, which is the United Kingdom air accident investigation board. So we have at least three Different Countries concurring about this. But he did say he wanted they were going to be refocusing their investigation. On those pilots. That news the conference just ended with no questions being asked. We move forward tomorrow with a lot of questions. Well stay only it and continue to try to get answers.
