A chase started in richmond and officers followed the suspect through four bay area counties before finally arresting him in san jose. Kimberly terry is live at San Francisco general hospital. And you saw the family of the officer just leave. Reporter yeah. They left a couple hours ago, gathered outside the hospital and left for the night. Of course they were here all day and were here all day yesterday as that officer was having his Vascular Surgery which lasted several hours. We are hearing that the officer is up and moving around and is good spirits. Fellow officers came by to check on his recoverecovery. That is adam shaw calling for help seconds after being shot. A car they stopped started backing up towards them. The incident sparked a man hunt. Multiple agencies searched for the suspect for several hours but did not find him. Then at about 11 00 in the evening a tip led officers to the suspect in this White Mercedes in the east bay. Attempted to stop that vehicle in interstate eastbound 80. And that vehicle failed to stop and evaded police. Reporter a high speed chase which could be heard on the Police Scanner led officers through four bay area counties before it finally came to an end in san jose. On the ground, watch your crossfire. Reporter police used spike strips forcing the car to stop. The party is out of the vehicle. Reporter the 50 year old was arrested, charged with assault with a deadly weapon, convicted felon in possession of ammunition and evading police. So far no gun has been found, and its not cheer whether the shot that injured the officer actually came from him. Two women who why ere in the ca with him were released. They are not looking for any other suspects. The two vehicles were taken into k custody as evidence. Thanks very much. And new at 11 00, one person is shot in the south bay, and now santa clara deputies are on the scene investigating. A person was shot at the intersection of south white road. The person was taken to the hospital with what was described as nonlife threatening injuries. Also new at 11 00. The chp is hunting for the driver in a deadly hitandrun crash. It was on 880. The impact killed a man and injured his passenger in this mini van. Investigators say the driver of the other car jumped out and took off running. They still dont know what led to the crash. The chs in the south bay also investigating an accident that killed a 16 year old boy. He was trying to cross i85 at about 4 00 in the morning. Thats when a car struck and killed him. People say theres no reason to be walking across the freeway. I dont understand the light rail station is an elevator that goes up to the bridge. It would be easy to go up to the bridge and cross over. Im not sure why anyone would cross over the freeway. Chp looking into that. And chp says the driver of the car did stop. The boys name has not yet been released. A News Conference just wrapped up a short time ago about the missing Malaysian Airline plane. Reporter the search for the missing Malaysian Airlines plane resumed this morning and continued throughout the day. It expanded to include the bali peninsula and an area between malaysia and vietnam. They have found what could be fragments from the plane but have not been able to confirm their findings. The ships will continue to do the search even at night, even now. The outcome so far, not finding the aircraft. Reporter relatives of those on board the plane have been growing angry over the lack of information. About 50 people began processing passports to search for more information about what happened to their loved ones. Search and rescue will continue their mission throughout the night. And youre starting to see a few bands of showers trying to approach the bay area but having a tough time holding to the. Its this heine well be watching dropping to the south till about 9 00 in the morning. This moisture plume is starting to thin out. And this frontal boundary is going to weaken by the time it slides south. As we get into the morning commute, well see a chance of rain especially up into the north bay. So a closer view now. We take you into monday morning. Youre seeing areas of mainly just some lighter rain we think. And then by 9 00 into san jose, whats left of any showers is gone. Then were back to partly cloudy skies for the afternoon. And after that, the other big story youre seeing in the seven day forecast, youll see the warmup. Not expecting much more than a tenth of an inch of rain. If these totals pan out, you could plan on some wet roadways which could slow things down, i think more so in the north bay. The latest reports are just some slight shaking going for 20 to 30 seconds long, which is enough to knock over shelves, maybe knock pictures off the wall. Thankfully, thats the only type of damage weve heard of so far. Moderately deep, not exactly extreme shallow quake but not a deep one. Still close enough to the crust that it could have caused some damage. This region, one of the most seismically active with a history of producing 7. 0 earthquak earthquakes. The sequence for aftershocks very likely to continue for the next 24 to 36 hours. Back to you. Post Traumatic Stress disorder. We most often hear about ptsd in connection with our troops coming back from war, but another group of people may not be getting the help they need following traumatic events. Were talking about victims of violent crime. Investigative reporter vickie wynne explains what she found. Reporter the bay area is home to several cities that see some of the highest incidents of violent crime. In partnership with pro publica we learn that those who suffer from ptsd can be less likely to hold a job. Reporter he still has the wounds from a bullet that passed through his leg. He was in a friends car near this intersection in oakland. I started hearing shots. Im hanging there with my foot caught. And i remember seeing the blood splatter, and i just laid down in the street. Paramedicis came and i ended up in the hospital. Reporter he said he felt deblessed and lost, plagued by nightmares, these were signs of post Traumatic Stress disorder and growing Research Shows that people like eaton are suffer at rates close to those of veterans from war. This is a doctor from a Trauma Center at seattle. He sees patients surviving in a civilian combat zone. And its sort of the intersection of Public Health and public violence. Dont throw away the underclass. We can help these folks. Reporter the problem is when civilians suffer neighborhood violence, they rarely get the screening and support they need. Your odds of not returning to work after that injury go from 40 to 60 . Reporter and studies show other social problems for the community, including a higher likelihood of carrying a weapon and ending back up in the hospital where often treatment costing fall on the community. The understanding for soldiers, we now need to show to young people who dont get to leave the battlefield. Reporter this program has 1200 young people. The group found patients who received intervention were 70 less likely to be arrested and 60 less likely to engage in violent crime. There are hundreds, if not thousandis of young people who have undiagnosed drama. They are feeling depressed and disconnected from their loved ones. Reporter we surveyed Trauma Centers with high rating of violence. They found only one hospital in new orleans systematically screens patients for ptsd. We found that some like john muir do assess patients in the hospital for acute signs of stress. San francisco generals wraparound project matches pay shaepti shents with mentors. I still have those nightmares. Reporter two years after he was shot, he still is recovering with a case manger. Experts say a uniform investment in the ptsd screening will payoff so that civilians caught in the trauma wont repeat it. I just try to find a goal every day and do something for that.
