But more and more researcher is showing another group of people may not be getting the help they need after a traumatic event. Were talking about victims of violent crimes. The lack of treatment could be costing all of us in health care and Public Safety. Vicky nguyen is here now with what she found. Reporter the bay area is home to several cities that see some of the highest incidents of violent crime. But what surprised us is what happens to people after they are shot or stabbed and end up in the hospital. In partnership with nonprofit journalism organization, we learned patients not treated could be more likely to carry weapons, leave their job and end up back in the health care system. 23yearold john still has the scars, wounds from a bullet that passed through his right leg. It was new years eve two years ago at 10 00 in the morning. He was in a friends car in oakland. Next thing i know i started hearing shots. Im hanging there with my foot caught. I remember seeing the blood splatter. I just laid down on the street and the paramedics came. Reporter when he was released from the hospital, he says he felt depressed and lost, plagued by nightmares. The dreams kept going. I kept hearing gunshots. Reporter these are signs of post Traumatic Stress disorder and Research Shoes people like ethan who suffer traumatic injury are developing ptsd at rates comparable to veterans of war. Somewhere between 10 and 40 . Reporter doug is a doctor in seattle. Like physicians at highland in fairfield, he sees patients surviving in a civilian combat zone. Its sort of the intersection between Public Health and gun violence. Reporter he says the problem is when civilians, especially young people, suffer neighborhood violence. They rarely get the screening, support and treatment they need. Your odds of not returning to work after that injury go from 40 to 60 . Reporter and studies show other social problems for the community, including a higher likelihood of carrying a we pop, job loss and ending backup in the hospital, where often treatment costs fall on the community. The understanding and the sympathy that weve shown to soldiers. Reporter ann marks leads youth alive, the groups caught in the cross fire program has over 1200 young people. The group found patients who received intervention were 70 less likely to be arrested and 60 less likely to engage in violent crime. There are hundreds, if not thousands of people, particularly young men, who have undiagnosed symptoms of trauma. Theyre not sleeping well, they are feeling depressed and disconnected from their loved ones. Reporter nbc bay area news pro publica surveyed 21 cities, including oakland, detroit and baltimore. Only one hospital in new orleans screens patients for ptsd. Some local Trauma Centers do assess patients in the hospital for acute signs of stress. San francisco generals wrap around project connects patients with mentors. But the American College of surgeons believes hospitals should do more. They plan to recommend Trauma Centers nationwide evaluate, support and treat patients for ptsd. I still have those nightmares. Reporter two years later, ethan is still recovering. [ inaudible ] experts say a uniform investment in screening will pay off in the prevention of future violence so civilians caught in the trauma wont repeat it. I just try to find a goal every day, and do something for that. I just stay out of trouble. Reporter experts say screening is a form of preventative medicine that can limit other Health Problems linked to trauma. Then that will push to the south by 4 00, 5 00 and 6 00. And by 11 00 p. M. , we still think theres going to be just enough energy left that well get some showers in san jose. We think it will be adding up, but just not nearly as high as the north bay. So excuse me, lets look at the totals that we can expect. Santa rosa, 0. 45 of an inch. And back towards palo alto, expecting 0. 09 of an inch. Throughout wednesday, the same here, yes, its going to be cloudy. Showers coming our way, but take a look at the temperatures. In the north bay, east bay, we have the possibility of showers in napa and santa rosa.
