Im janelle wang. And im raj mathai. The rain has been active and damaging. The next question, how will this impact our weekend . We have a team of reporters and meteorologists across the bay area. Lets begin with our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri who is tracking our late night conditions. Jeff . Were seeing the next wave just as forecasted beginning to move in from the south. More of that coming up, but i want to look at these storm reports. We have one of about everything today. Flooding, flash flooding at that, trees down, winds that topped 60 miles per hour. One of the top reports coming in northwest of sacramento and woodland. Thats where we had that funnel cloud report. The storm spotter said the funnel was about 800 feet off the ground. Some folks are debating whether this touched the ground or not. But a funnel cloud. This was pretty well designed, not very destructive. There was not any damage reported with this. But certainly a very severe look here at some california weather that did cross throughout the state. You can see on the radar, we are tracking this next wave moving in from the south. We noted a few lightning strikes earlier, so definitely plenty of juice in the atmosphere. Down here in the south, weve been pretty hard hit the past 30 to 40 minutes, right on 101 through morgan hill down to gilroy. You can see some heavy returns of rain across evergreen at this point. Well continue to track that and of course, the possibility of Severe Weather in the overnight hours. But right now i want to turn it over to meteorologist rob mayeda with more on how much rain we got and what it means in terms of the larger picture. The rain were seeing right now, the heaviest around the south bay. Thats been the trend of the day. South san jose going over 2 inches of rain. San ramon approaching an inch and a half. For san jose, going just under an inch of rain at the airport today, that boosted the rainfall totals for the seasonal rainfall by 28 in a single day. That gives you an idea how dry its been in san jose that just an inch of rain can do that. Also good news, a slight uptick at the San Luis Reservoir going up to about 33 historical average. And in the sierra, the numbers improving somewhat. The snow pack at 33 of average. If you look at the two lines at the bottom of the screen, running below that 19761977 average. So we need plenty of ground to make up. Hopefully this trend can continue through the next few weeks. More on the forecast coming up. Now back to you. Very good information, rob. Thank you. Its a dangerous mix, this commute combined with the slick roads. George kiriyama continues our coverage tonight from campbell. Reporter good evening. The rain has come down in spurts. Weve seen wet roads. Weve felt the wind and even hit some hog. Definitely a recipe for a dangerous commute. This car ended up on the side of a muddy hill off of north bound 101 in south san jose. You can blame a puddle on the highway for this. The driver says he hit it and lost control. We just got to slow it down a little bit. Better to be safe and get home than to end up in an accident. Reporter it was hard to see the road at the summit. Thats where the fog joined the rain. The fog is the big one that gets us all sometimes. Reporter doug daley had to pull over. The driving conditions were a bit challenging. It was really blowing hard as far as the wind and rain coming down. Reporter the wind was definitely blowing. Here in concord, about 1500 people lost power. Sporadic rain showers made the evening commute even slower than usual for friday, and the wet conditions forced drivers to stay alert at every turn. Its been crazy out hire. The rain causes people to drive crazy, and we got to get through it, especially during rush hour traffic. Oh, yeah, theres a lot of cars. I was a little afraid. Of course, because its very busy. Reporter drivers exchanged Insurance Information tonight after a fender bender on i80. This time no one was hurt. But this morning someone was killed in a crash on highway 24 in oakland. People dont slow down and they go out of control and we have to go help him. Reporter at sfo, more than 150 arriving and departing flights were canceled because of the weather and delays on some flights lasted more than three hours. B. A. R. T. Officials confirmed that this mornings delays were the result of rain seeping through a ventilation system and onto computer equipment. Trains were operated manually. Thankfully, the computer problem was resolved in time for the evening commute. And back here live in concord, just about 20 minutes ago, i saw sparks coming from what im told is a blown transformer. You can see its very dark down there. The traffic light here is out. A total of 9,000 customers without power across the entire bay area tonight. Most of them in the north bay, 1500 here in concord. The lights came back on, on this block just at 10 00. Were taking that as a good sign, but no word on when the rest of the customers can expect to have their power back. Monty francis, nbc bay area news. We cant blame it all on the rain. Some of the flooding was because of copper thieves. Caltrans says a water pump that was supposed to keep water off of the roadway but sometime last night thieves stole the copper wire that helps power that pump. You see the end result here.
