She has just a few months left to fight an eviction or shell be forced to leave her apartment, home for 50 years. Ive spent most of my life in that chair right there. Oh, i love this, watching the idiot box. The new property opener, urban green brought the building last december. And then within three weeks to a month we got a letter, letting us know that their plan was to get rid of all of us. So whats the incentive . Most say profit. While mary paid less than 1,000 a month for her rent controlled two bedroom. Across the street, another two bedroom is going for 3800. Four times the money. Across town in north beach no warning. All of a sudden. Teresa who is trying to find a job is also trying to find a new home. She was evicted under the ellis act in april after her land lady died. There was never any discussion. But while she plays rent control price others are going for thousands a month. This could cost up to 4,000 a month. And the 920 square foot two bedroom nearby, almost 5,000. In one week i heard of three other people that are being ellis acted out. There is a huge spike in the number of units evicted under the ellis act. In 2012 through september there were 104 units evicted. For the same period this year, its nearly doubled to 200. The San FranciscoTenants Union set up 3,705 up until september of this year. This attorney owns a firm that specializes in helping tenants. It focuses on the eviction. They both say the ellis act is getting abused. New Property Owners will renovate the building and then sell to multiple owners to provide a coop or a tenancy in common. They have a Side Agreement thats not recorded with the deed that allows each owner to use one of the units exclusively. The other option is a buyout, usually under the threat of alis act eviction, a Property Owner will pay the tenant to leave. Crow calls it a game of chicken. Because if we can get to a point where we really think its a bluff im going to advise them not to do a buyout. There is an uptick because we have a housing shortage. She works with a nonprofit. You cant really blame families for wanting to cash out on longterm investments. She says the ellis act is the only tool available for the people she works with to leave the rental business. Inclusionary renting is the ellis act is the only escape valve that these owners have from overrestricted real estate markets. But those fighting to keep people in their homes say gentry any cation is fighting against the fabric which gives San Francisco so much flavor. Thats me right here. Mary fears the worst. She might not spend the rest of her life in the city she spent most of her life in. I dont really believe that at my point in life that they could take me out kicking and screaming. Shes a fighter. Now none of the owners of the properties in the story would comment. As to the buyout, why even offer them . If Property Owners want to rent out a property thats been ellis acted they must offer it at five years. But if theres a buyout it can be rented out at market rate to anyone.
