Condolences to their families. Our hearts, our prayers, go out to the families of two workers who have just been killed on the bart tracks. This is a tragedy of the greatest proportion for the bart family. Reporter assistant bart manager paul overseer said the train was in automatic mode and an experienced train operator was behind the control. Some Union Members claim the operator was a manager without recent experience filling in for operators now on strike. If that was an experienced train operator, it wouldnt have happened. Reporter its an allegation bart owe filgss would not discuss. Weve just lost two people in the bart family. And thats what our focus is on. Reporter bart procedures require that one employee act as a lookout for oncoming trains as the other one works. Bart officials said both workers had extensive experience around moving trains. They were doing today what they have probably done 100 if not 1,000 other times in their career. Reporter these are the sixth and seventh deaths of bart workers on the job in bart history. Theres word tonight the National Transportation safety board is taking over this investigation. Were told several bart employees were on board the train at the time of the accident. They witnessed what happened and they are being interviewed. Theres video footage from the front of the train that is being reviewed by investigators. One of the goesed was a member of a bart union. He crossed the picket line to do this job today . Thats right, one of the smaller unions for the maintenance workers. The president of that union says members are free to cross the picket line but theyre encouraged to stand in solidarity with striking bart workers. More details now. The last time a bart worker was killed on the job was in 2008. Bart inspector James Strickland was hit by a train while inspecting track on the same line between the concord and Pleasant Hill stations. The 44yearold concord man was struck by behind by a train traveling on the opposite track from the 1 he usually used. Strickland was apparently unaware bart had been singletracking trains in the area. Bart unions reacted to the news of the deaths this afternoon putting aside the issues surrounding the ongoing labor strike to send condolences to the families of the bart worker and contractor who were killed. Kimberly terry is in the news room with more on that. Once they got word of the deadly accident, workers with the amalgamated Transit Union stopped picketing and announced out of members will not be holding rallies or picketing tomorrow. The unions which have said safety concerns are among the major issues they have with bart steered clear of the subject choosing instead to focus on the lives lost and their grieving loved ones. One of the employees was a member of local 3393. Our hearts go out to the family of both workers as well as the person operating the trains. This was an unnecessary tragedy. The main point right now is to just express condolences for the families, the loved ones, so this is just this is a tragic stint and so as people have said, there will be plenty of time to talk more about what happened after people find out what did happen. These comments were made at a press conference at lake merritt bart station. All barts unions were represented there. 1555 is planning two vigils tomorrow, at the lake merritt and walnut creek bart stations tomorrow evening at 6 00 p. M. Now to continuing coverage of the bart strike. It appears the strike will continue into sunday as bart management and Union Officials remain at an impasse. The two sides broke off talks on thursday. One union plans to present barts latest offer to its membership for a vote in the coming week. Leaders are not optimistic members will approve it. No new talks are scheduled.
