and at one point he fired at cars on 580 which led to the freeway closure. let's go live to cheryl hurd with the latest. cheryl? >> reporter: police are waiting out the situation. a few moments ago i saw s.w.a.t. team members circling the member. a suspect wanted in a stabbing and shooting remains holed up in a hotel, a section of the 580 is closed and could affect your morning commute. the bridge is open tonight after police closed it today when the suspect allegedly fired a shot across the bridge. s.w.a.t. officering continue to surround the hotel where the armed suspect claims he has his girlfriend held up there. we have surveillance pictures of the man, taken sunday at the united market on 3rd street. he was involved in a shoplifting incident that turned into a stabbing. when officers tracked the suspect's location to the hotel at 8:30 this morning, he barricaded himself inside. >> we came back after dropping some supplies off and they said you can no longer go back into your room. the hotel is great people but this is insane. >> reporter: so the morning commute is going to be very important to a lot of you listening to me right now. officers are telling me this information. they are saying that plan for the section of freeway in front of this hotel to be closed. but they're going to try everything they can to open it. but plan for it to be closed and wake up early in the morning to find out if it will remain closed. if it is closed, you will have a detour around the area. everything will be spelled out for you in the morning. but right now, plan for the section in front of this hotel between sir francis drake boulevard and bellham avenue to be closed. back to you guys. >> that's that connecter right there on 580. you've been out there several hours. any indication that they're making a move here or are police still talking to this man inside the hotel? >> reporter: not at all, no indication that they're going to make a move. they will stay here all night long, of course, and possibly well into the morning. they say they're in no rush. they are talking to the suspect but not giving out a lot of information about that right now. >> very good information, cheryl hurd reporting live from the scene. we'll continue our coverage on our morning show. for the second time in four days, b.a.r.t. is the victim of signer hackers. but this time it involves b.a.r.t. police officers, their families and safety. the private information of some 100 b.a.r.t. police officers now public. still no official claim of responsibility for the cyber attack on b.a.r.t. but it could be a group associated with anonymous, the same organization thane filtrated the transit agency initially. george kiriyama reports on what security experts say is behind the attack. >> reporter: if you go on the b.a.r.t. police officer associations website, this is what you will see. the site went offline, after hackers gained access and published it online. the security company monitors viruses worldwide. gary davis says the attack on b.a.r.t. looks like the work of so-called hacktivists. >> they will disrupt their website just to make a point to say i can. i did something, you couldn't stop me. >> reporter: davis says they look more to embarrass, whereas cyber terrorists are after sense tich classified information in return for money. >> they'll go in and try to extract the most sensitive information. >> reporter: davis says anyone can be a victim of cyber terrorists or hacktivist, but he says usually these groups aim big and target corporations. >> the average person they're not interested in. they're more interested in drawing the notoriety associated with an organization and their members more so than just a person, yourself working at home. there's not that level of interest. >> that was george kiriyama reporting and we will continue to follow the investigation into the signer crime on our website and tomorrow on nbc bay area news. tonight, the search continues. san jose police are looking for a man they call extremely dangerous. they've identified this man as the fourth suspect in the january 8th triple homicide at the mexicali nightclub in san jose. detectives say he can be seen rushing into the club trying to kidnap the bar's owner at gun point. a shootout ensued with a customer. three people died, including the customer. an apology and resignation of the police chief of oakland schools. a white sergeant claimed he heard him go on a racial tirade against an african-american officer after a golf tournament in july. the oakland school district says today's retirement closes the investigation into the formal complaint filed against him. the former chief wrote a letter to the oakland school board, stating he was deeply sorry for the pain his actions have caused and said he was going to focus on sobriety and recovery. a popular public golf course in east san jose is losing money, costing the city about $280,000 a year. san jose is now considering shutting it down and selling it off. but it won't be easy. there's a spirited debate when it comes to the rancho course. >> to solve our budget crisis, we can't go around closing needed things that -- especially the east side could definitely use in the way of affordable golf. >> the nine-hole course is home to many youth and low income golf programs. it costs about $10 to play and serves about 30,000 people each year. mayor chuck reed says he can save the city about $2 million a year if san jose sells rancho dell pueblo to a housing developer. pg&e is pointing the finger at someone else saying it's not to blame for the san bruno blast. instead, they blame the manufacturer of the pipeline for the explosion last sent. pg&e cites a document which says the explosion was caused by a 1954 manufacturing defect. the document also says that pg&e's actions before and after were timely and responsible. >> i couldn't believe it. it goes back to what i said previously. they will say one thing, that they paid thousands for an advertisement, apologizing to the people of san bruno and to the state and saying how we take responsibility for it. but then at every opportunity legally they look for a way to get out of that. >> the ntsb plans to announce the problem cause of the explosion august 30th. how far should cities go to keep people safe from dangerous dogs? one sonoma city council member wants to ban pit bulls. joanne sanders says she realizes this is a controversial issue but points to last week's deadly pit bull attack in pacifica. sanders asked her staff to research options for regulating vicious dogs and says she personally supports banning the ownership of pit bulls in her city of sonoma. a san jose fast food restaurant is being sued for favoring its sags employees. the equal employment opportunity commission says the again manager gave less desirable duties to hispanic workers, reduced hours and held them to a different standard of performance. the lawsuit is seeking monetary damages on behalf of the hispanic workers and calls for training on anti-discrimination laws. >> your money to pay for their raises. the uc system is using money from tuition hikes to give raises to the faculty. the system will spend about $140 million on so-called mare it raises. all faculty and staff will get a raise generally about 3% of their salary if they receive a positive evaluation this fall. some of them earning up to $200,000 a year. money for the raise also come from a combination of state and uc general funds, as well as revenue from student fees, medical centers, and grants. a local attorney on the wrong side of the law. up next, his sexual fantasy facilitated through craigslist. investigators say he went too far. it's a simple blood test that could save your life. the questions women need to ask their doctors to spot heart disease. is it revenge? the feds turn the tables on the s&p. see why the same agenty that downgraded the u.s. credit is facing a criminal investigation. good evening. i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. a mix of temperatures again today. 93 in campbell and 92 in walnut creek. however, san francisco and also san jose, anywhere from 60 to 78 degrees. we'll have details on a cooling pe wee up we're back and this is a live picture of the standoff going now into its 15th hour in san rafael happening at the extended stay hotel. police have surrounded this hotel. a man is holed up inside it, an armed man. for most of the day, basically the entire day, the 580 connecter between 101 and the richmond bridge has been shut down as police make sure the place is secure because the man is armed. his girlfriend is with him inside the hotel room. we don't know if it's by force or her own free will. we will follow this into the morning and how this is going to affect the commute. police right now say they will probably wait it out. stay with nbc bay area news for the latest on the standoff. he says they answered his online ad for kinky sex at a san francisco apartment. they say he raped them after meeting through craigslist. tonight, a san francisco attorney specializing in sexual harassment faces charges involveling three women. cheryl hurd has the story from two different perspectives. >> i would not be doing this case if i thought he was guilty of rape. >> reporter: stuart has been a defense lawyer for over 30 years. he says his client, a fellow lawyer, is not a rapist. >> my client, michael hoffman, was a lawyer who had a certain interest in certain kinds of sexual contacts, which was he was the dominating partner and there were submissive women. the way he found partners is on craigslist. >> reporter: the ads were on men seeking women. he read some of the alleged ads and told us what some of them said. >> i want to love you, i want to hit you, i want you to cry, i want you to be ashamd. >> reporter: but the women who answered those ads have a different story. hoffman is accused of sexually assaulting a 36-year-old east bay woman in march. a 19-year-old san francisco woman in june. and a 25-year-old east bay woman earlier this month. >> we've charged this case related to three victims. i don't have information as to whether or not there may be others. but i can tell you that the investigation is ongoing. >> reporter: a friend of one of the victims contacted nbc bay area. he says hoffman's lawyer is not telling the truth. >> representations being made publicly by his attorney that she responded to an ad on craigslist that mentioned acts of violence is not true. >> reporter: hoffman was arrested august 5th and is being held on $3 million bail. in san francisco, cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> a jury will now decide hoffman's fate. he remains in jail on a $3 million bail. hoffman's preliminary hear willing be later this month. would you pay your bank $3 for using their debit card? you may not have a choice. san francisco based wells fargo is joining the growing list of banks testing or introducing a monthly fee for debit cards. the bank plans to test a $3 monthly fee this fall in five states. california is not one of them. many banks are adding fees and scaling back perks because a new cap will limit how much they can collect from merchants. tonight, the government is investigating standard and poors for its alleged role in the financial crisis.
