Reporter when thinking fog refused to lift, officials and the blue angels called off the main show. Pilots couldnt see important landmarks that they need to use for their choreography. It was too thick. We couldnt see the top of the golden gate bridge, which everyone in the city knows where it is, and its very high. Unfortunately, if you cant see the top of the bridge, youre flying in a very dangerous situation. Reporter the air shows attract 1 million visitors annually before the pandemic. But it wasnt just fog. Even in the afternoon, most visitors were bundled up. And cool weather may have caused some folks to stay home. I thought that the crowds were slightly down. But the enthusiasm was great. This is the end of the season. This is supposed to be the big bang, you know . The big final bang, and it just kind of went out with a little, you know, whimper. I think thats where the safety concern was, that it would start to clear out for a moment, but then within a few moment it is would move back in. Speaking of the fog we still have areas of fog into novato, half moon bay, overnight lows will dip into the 50s, and yes, we are expecting to keep the influence of that marine layer into your Early Morning hours which means impacts to your commute. Limited visibility. Weve seen visibility to less than a quarter of mile. And leave extra space between you and the car in front of you. San joses overnight lows in the 60s. Well wake up in the 50s, and then we do have a bit of a change going into the workweek. I will write down all of those details and what to expect. New tonight, San Francisco firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked a fire that burned five homes in the Silver Terrace neighborhood. It broke out and two homes had major damage. The red cross, heres the most important thing, is helping 15 people who were displaced. The video was shared by a neighbor. It was contained in about an hour. New video overnight from oakland, where a sideshow turned violent. Happened about 3 00 this morning on 42nd avenue. It stretch add few blocks from foothill to international. Officers say they arrived to find about 50 cars. Shots broke out. Several people were arrested. Cars were towed. Citations were given out, but were waiting to hear from Police Exactly how many. A new Covid Subvariant has arrived in the bay area. Marianne favro spoke with our Infectious Disease expert about why some scientists are calling it concerning. Reporter one case of the new Covid Subvariant known as ba. 2. 75. 2 has been detected in the bay area by the clinical vie roll ji lab. Its one of the most immuneinvasive variants. Reporter it looks different, which means antibodies we have from getting a vaccine or from having covid may not be able to recognize it and ward off infection. But ucsf Infectious Disease specialist dr. Peter chin hong says despite that concern, common antivirals used to fight covid, including paxlovid will still be effective. It just shuts down the mechanism that makes these vrus particles. Thats why it doesnt matter which spike protein you have. All the antivirals will work. Reporter while there is a lull in covid cases now, he recommends that you get a booster shot soon to protect against getting a severe case of covid that could send to you the hospital. Thats covid, but theres a new warning about flu season and why doctors think it could be especially bad this year. Kids are back in school, adults are returning to the office. As covid restrictions ease, flu cases are on the rise. One city in alabama reports 250 students out sick. In new york, cases are already widespread. The cdc says nationwide, cases are 13 times higher now than they were this time last year. One of the reasons, many have stopped wearing masks, but this year theres a new stronger type of flu vaccine. So the highdose shots are particularly recommended for those 65 and above. It gives the immune system response that can help fight off the flu. Seniors should ask for that specifically. Doctors say its safe to get flu shots and covid boosters all at the same time. It has been five years since the tubbs fire burned wineries. In 2017, flames burned the winery to the ground. They were able to reopen in december 2019 before covid hit. They say theyve been through a lot in the last few years. I havent had a lot of time to reflect on, you know, kind of what we went through in the rebuilding process. We want to thank the community for their support of us and giving recognition for how resilient theyve been, how quickly weve rebuilt and what a Bright Future we have. Reporter today the owners organized an event to commemorate the start of the tubbs fire. Local and state leaders was there. One says although the fire was devastating and deadly, it helped the Community Learn to better prepare for disasters. Weve learned from our mistakes as a community and about, you know, how to deal with this, like getting out Early Warning signs, you know, communication to the community. You know. Two years after the tubbs fire we had another big fire called the kincaid fire here in sonoma county, everybody was pretty sure we were going to lose parts of windsor and healdsburg. A lot was saved mostly because of Early Warning. Reporter the only part of the winery that didnt burn was the Sculpture Garden and most of the vines survived. They opened for business and havent been able to rebuild their Production Facility and are still making wine off site and are hoping to break ground on a new Production Facility next year. Were excited about what the future holds for us, and, you know, i feel like its a turning point for our community, too. And im proud of our community. I really feel like because we have a common, the common act of the fire, you know, really made our community a lot stronger. You remember the two other wildfires tore through wine country in october 2017. The atlas fire, and between the three fires, more than 7100 structures were destroyed. And you and i were both covering the tubbs fire when that happened. Didnt know each other at the time. Five years ago this weekend. I couldnt believe how that fire, the wind had to be like a blowtorch. Thats no exaggeration. It jumped across highway 101. I remember going there and thinking oh, my gosh, you can count the homes there by the chimneys. Thats the only thing left standing. The rest was ash. Were happy that 90 of the homes have been rebuilt. And lessons learn interested that fire. Protests over the death of a young iranian woman continued in the bay area. Hundreds rallied carrying signs, showing solidarity with protests in iran. Protests sparked after mahsa amini died in custody for not wearing her head scarf properly. Among those at the demonstration, scott wiener, some people in San Francisco say they will keep showing up to lift voices of people in iran. They dont see any future living in iran. Last week on a school bus. You can see a witness and the mother panicking, asking the bus driver for help. A womans car was just stole within the toddler inside. The bus driver immediately called 911 and told other bus drivers to be on the lookout. Soon another bus driver spotted the missing child. When she went by the students, the baby, she kind of stopped, the baby looks little, but, okay. Maybe a parent was nearby. It wasnt one of her own students. As soon as she found out what he was doing, he was like, thats it. The video shows the bus driver going up to help. The child walk away, but she holds her arm out to show him that he was safe. Two drivers collided at fox worthy and amanda drive. The driver crashed through some bushes and hit side of a house before coming to a stop. Fortunately, no one was hurt and there was no serious damage. An east bay neighborhood is on edge after a deadly shooting in a parking lot. The shooting happened just before midnight last night on belmont lane near buchanan road. The parking lot is for nearby condos. Officers had found a man who had been shot and died at the scene. They are working to identify a suspect or suspects. Jurors in the kristin smart murder trial will return on thursday in hopes of reaching a verdict. They will decide whether paul flores is guilty of smarts murder and whether his father ruben helped cover it up. She disappeared in may of 1996. Her body has yet to be found, but multiple witnesses say paul flores was the last person to be seen with her. The cases were handed to the juries last week. If convicted he faces 25 years to life and ruben a maximum sentence of three years. Jury selection happens tomorrow for harvey weinstein. He is already serving a 23year sentence for rape and Sexual Assault in new york. But now hes facing trial for different allegations in los angeles, including several that prosecutor the say happened during oscar week in 2013. This day is long overdue for mr. Weinstein to appear in a Los Angeles County courtroom on these very serious charges against him. Weinstein has been indicted on four counts of rape and several other Sexual Assault cases. Its starting to move in through areas like livermore, and well see this become a little more widespread through the Early Morning hours. Were running a few degrees cooler. Heres the timing of the morning fog. Overnight, notice by 11 00, all the way to half moon bay, creeping in through palo alto, san jose, morgan hill, gilroy. If i push this time stamp forward to about 6 30, in time for your morning commute, the fog still lingers. It really isnt until 12 00, 1 00 that we start to get the clearing in inland areas. Notice around San Francisco and the coastline the fog will remain pretty steady. Into tomorrow morning at 7 00 a. M. , still expecting to see 50s, but by the afternoon, its going to be another day where we see abovenormal temperatures at least for inland areas. By 12 00, 70s in brentwood. And well top out in the mid80s. No 90s on the map. Just a few degrees cooler, compared to those, you know, really hot 90s last week. We had high pressure. And as of right now. Over the next several days, no rain in sight. We had some systems that we were monitoring. Looks like thats going to stay to our north. Exciting. Low water levels in lakes and reservoirs continue to solve and reveal mysteries. This picture of a wreck was tweeted out that appeared in low water in shasta lake. Its markings confirm it was assigned to the uss monrovia. It was built during world war ii and served as general pattons headquarters in 1943. It was in use for decades after the war, being sold for scrap metal. It is the latest in the string of water levels receding. Back in april a body was found in a barrel in lake mead, believing the person died more than 40 years ago. In august, the body of a man missing for 20 years also was discovered in lake mead. Studying the ocean can be challenging, so scientists decided to build their own. Reporter there is literally an ocean of information behind me. Imagine how much we could learn if we could bottle all that up and study it . Thanks to a new machine in san diego we dont have to imagine anymore. The ocean covers three quarters of the earth. It spits out gases and aerosols that feed our clouds and control our climate in a major way. So we really want to understand that better than we do. Its really, really exciting. We are at Scripps Institution oceanography. Here we are. Were looking at the Scripps Ocean atmospheric ocean simulator. Its seawater that gets pumped from the ocean straight into here. Theres not another one in the entire world like this. Its a big machine that reproduces where the atmosphere meets the ocean. This is a wind tunnel and these are the lights that simulate sun. Youre looking through the side wall of the channel and seeing waves. It basically lets us increase waves and winds. We can get up to almost hurricaneforce winds. We can look at all the conditions.
