The hunt is on for two escaped inmates in the south bay. How they broke out and where they might be. Nbc bay area news starts right now. Good evening. Thanks for being with us on this thanksgiving night. Im raj mathai. Were on in prime time because of thursday night football. What is happening at this hour, a lot is happening. A hectic scene in downtown san jose, four inmates broke out of the county jail. Two have been captured and these two are still on the loose, Laron Campbell and rogelio chavez. Its something right out of a movie. A makeshift rope that dropped them to freedom. We begin our Team Coverage in san jose. Where are the officers searching . Do we know and how dangerous are these two inmates . Reporter we know they are out there at this point, the officers, that is. This is the main jail behind me. The inmates were housed in the old main jail which is the building right behind this facility. Tonight the manhunt continues. These are the two inmates accused of escaping from the main jail. Rogelio chavez and Laron Campbell. Based on their history, yeah, they are dangerous. Reporter the Sheriffs Office released these images. They show whats left of a steel bar that was hacksawed from a second floor cell of the main jail cell and the bed sheets used to rappel to the ground. Inmates are sophisticated to the point where they have a lot of time where they can sit and think about how to get out of jail. Reporter for more than ten hours police looked for the escapees in a perimeter they established around the jail. By 9 00 this morning through Surveillance Video from another location, investigators determined the inmates got away and the manhunt expanded to the entire county. The fact that these bars were cut the way they were, it wasnt something that they just thought of in a minute. Its something that probably took some creative planning. Reporter i have been speaking with my sources since about 2 30 this morning. I can report that the investigators are not taking any breaks. They are undertaking this manhunt as we speak. Heres a closer look at one of the escapees, rogelio chavez. This is video of him in a palo alto courtroom last year facing one of his criminal charges. This obviously has been a nefb wracking thanksgiving. People in the neighborhood are scared, not only the thought of seeing these escapees, but also the heavy Police Presence up and down the streets. Earlier this morning Sheriff Deputies patrolled the streets near the main jail. Its unnerving. Nobody wants to hear that in your neighborhood. Reporter less than eight hours after the inmates escaped thousands of runners arrived to participate in the Silicon Valley turkey trot. There were a hundred officers along the race route as an increased precaution. I noticed that security was beefed up more, which is good. Makes everybody feel at ease. A mother missing for three weeks was found alive this morning after being released by her captors, Sherri Papini meant missing after going for a jog in mountaingate. Sheriff deputies say she was released this morning and flagged down as a passing driver in yolo county. She was bound with restraints. The 34yearold mother of two is now in stable condition at a hospital recovering from minor injuries. She was apparently abducted by two women. Well, obviously, she is very relieved to be returned home safely and be reunited with her husband and so in addition to any other further on her emotional state, i dont have that information. Investigators are looking for a darkcolored suv driven by two armed hispanic women. A 50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the abductors. The hol days can bring out the worst in our driving. The chp is having a busy week and it could be a busy weekend. Officers made 179 dui arrests in first six hours of the maximum enforcement period. It ends sunday at midnight. Right now all available officers are on patrol to keep the highways safe through the weekend. As for our weather, gorgeous tonight. Clear and cold. Take a look outside. A taco truck was robbed in broad daylight. It happened yesterday afternoon in benicia. They were last seen leaving in a blue gray honda suv. Three men Wearing Masks and hoodies held the workers at gunpoint, sprayed them with mace or pepper spray and took off with the cash. Unusual. The taco trucks in town are kind of a staple of the businesses that are out there for local quick bite to eat and breakfast and things like that. Theyre out there, but its not a high risk target. The employees of that taco truck were treated at a local hospital for minor burns. At least today. They feel special. Reporter the owner knows all too well what its like to be without. Once homeless herself, the immigrant from ethiopia has had her share of hardships. Including a near eviction. The Community Rallied behind her four months ago after her landlord threatened to evict her over maintenance issues. While the eviction was resci rescinded, shes still fighting to get a lease. Today shes grateful. A celebration, all of us in here, the workers are happy and were giving back to the community. Im homeless in my car right now. Robert walsh said its the first solid meal hes had in a year. His friend told him about the thanksgiving event but he didnt expect this. When i was told about this, i was thinking that we were going to maybe a shelter to eat. And to see this and what shes doing here is its a really good thing. There are so many great examples of people giving back today. A small San Francisco market served up hundreds of meals because the owner says she knows what its like to be hungry. People lined up outside of duck loi market in the mission district. Amanda no and her husband say theyve been doing this for seven year. Its grown to the point where they have help from other restaurateurs. Their own experience makes them want to give back. For me, i would be happy to see people waiting in line like this to be served a warm meal today. Because i have been hungry before when i was a poor kid when i came from vietnam. She opened her Grocery Store and has given back to the community. Reporter the ngo family says the first year they started out by serving about 200 meals. Notice how the temperatures begin to drop off and head farther north. Youll see numbers in the upper 50s, low 60s around the peninsula. San francisco close to 60 and into the north bay. You might see a few sprinkles at times and those highs in the upper 50s as we go through friday afternoon. Then by this time tomorrow night through early saturday morning, well see bigger changes as the rain makes a comeback. 3 00 a. M. , now we see the rain on approach. Probably the wettest part of the weekend coming in for saturday especially from the south bay through 9 00 a. M. Then cooler air begins to rise. Thats where things get interesting. We wont see as much widespread rain saturday into sunday. But as the cooler air rises, you can see snow levels down close to 3500 feet. Thats what well be watching closely. The wettest part of the weekend, first half on saturday through about noon, widespread rain changing over to chilly showers that will take us into the sunday forecast. A few showers early. Then the end of the weekend looking chilly and dry. But keep in mind if youre going to head to the sierra, it will a little bit of tough going. Snow down to 3500 feet. Probably seeing those snow showers all the way through sunday night. So as things play out, well continue to see the rain turning to showers around the coast. He was homeless not too long ago and spend many thanksgivings at glide. They feed three times a day. I was happy with that. Then for the beds, overnight shelters, i was really happy for that. This year the Silicon Valley turkey trot aims to raise lots of money for five local charities that house and feed the needy on top of the millions already raised since Carl Guardino founded the race with just 1900 runners. In the first 11 years weve contributed about 6. 2 million to help local families in need here in Silicon Valley. If it goes as expected this morning well add nearly another million to that total.
