Sharks central. Brodie brazil, curtis brown, scott gomez, jamie baker. I think one thing we can safely establish, the sharks were seeing now, this is not how they looked in rounds prior. I think thats accurate, and you also have to tip your cap to pittsburgh. I think pittsburgh is coming out and theyre playing a fast brand of hockey, faster than anything the sharks had to face not only this season but definitely in the playoffs. They had moments when they got their puck deep, they got into the forecheck. But youre right, its tough to maintain that for 60 minutes. Scott has been in three stanley cup final series. Hes won two of them. But now the sharks have to sit on this game for two days and fly to pittsburgh. The mental part comes in now. Instead of going on the flight, two and two, youre feeling great. The media now comes into effect. Youre facing elimination, and lets face it, its not easy to get your mind clear. But they have a lot of vets in there. Theyll have to find a way, and they said it earlier, they cant let them take their will away. This was the first game of the series that wasnt decided by only a single goal. That being said its the pens doing all the small things. Theyre doing all the Little Things right thats adding up. Best team the sharks have played, and a different challenge. We talked about the speed, the speed, the speed, but speed in itself is great, but its not going to overcome and take over if from a positional standpoint the guys are out of position. But theyre not. Theyre positionally sound in all three zones. Their ability to break up plays with the sticks time and time again, these are details. Their sticks arent in the air, theyre breaking up plays and theyre winning battles. The one thing that surprised me was san jose battled the l. A. Kings and the blues. I thought san jose would have an advantage in the battles, but when it comes to 5050 battles, ive been impressed by what pittsburgh has done here. Well see, its an uphill battle. You got to look no further than golden state. Throwing basketball on us, are you . Well, they came back 31 against oklahoma city, a very good team. I know the situation is a little different, but also the other thing is, the desperation they showed in the third period, that has to be constant now for every shift the rest of the way. Lets bring it back to pittsburghs first goal in this game. Ian cole his first score in 105 games. This continues the trend of the series. The guy you wouldnt expect to find in the back of the net are certainly doing that. If you watch the sequence here, pittsburgh was all over the sharks. They were bound to do something dangerous. Pittsburgh gets a little san jose here. Everybody watching the puck for san jose, and watch cole as a defenseman to get this rebounded. For a lot of the series, watch kessel here. Hes shooting for a rebound. Hes not looking to score here. They let him waltz in there and get that extra chance. Bart jones was special again tonight, but that should have been cleared out of the way and thats a big point of the game right there. Scott got an assist on that goal which you said, watch out for him. Now hes going to feel a little different, feel a little more loose. Hes the guy that capitalizes to make it 20 on the power play. We were talking about joe torenton the other day. Thats a scary thing for san jose to have it go in. The point producers, all they need is this little break. It was a different game. We bring the game eventually to the third period. Its 20. The pens obviously looking sharp. Goals in both the periods. I thought san jose looked great. They made some line alterations. Almost at the half point period, Melkker Karlsson had it going on. You got guys in front of the net, you put in the puck and you end up scoring. This is the third line guys, just meat and potatoes, and at that point gave the sharks a little bit of momentum, got the crowd going, and youre thinking, well, maybe they can make that. Absolutely. San jose up to this point, they still have never held a lead at all in any game of the series. We thought, what if san jose could tie it, what if they could win it in overtime . This series was 22. Eric fehrer putting the game away. Hes on the rush, he bur heies. Pittsburgh with that speed you talked about earlier, they make a great shot. But going back to the goals youre going to have to score for the most part, its going to be grind it out, get it deep on san jose, fight through some adversity. I thought they did everything but score to tie it up. There was a breakaway that was a great opportunity. You look back at the moment in the game and it doesnt even come to that goal by fehrer. Theyre down now 31. You cant look in the rearview mirror. You want to move forward, you want to control what you can control, and right now they have to pick themselves up here in the little bit of time, head back to pittsburgh and win the game. Time now to get you into san joses dressing room. It is reaction right now starting with the captain joe. We had some chances, then had some bad luck. The penguins were playing well in this series. Weve battled back and but definitely all playoffs when weve had the lead, we know what it feels like, you can take a little confidence from it and move forward. I think thats going to be important. [ inaudible question ] im more frustrated with the wins and losses more than anything. Its different if were 31 and dont have anything. Its a different story. But right now were where were at, a goal or two probably changes the outcome, and the way its been going for most of the postseason, i feel like i should probably have a little bit more. You just keep going. You know, tonight was definitely better, shot the puck a little bit more. The guys made some plays, i had some luck. Got to find a way, though, for sure. [ inaudible question ] i think so a little bit. Theyve done a good job there. Then a couple times in the other game, two shots when you get a chance. You keep fighting through the night. We had a little more room, it felt like. So its just were just going to have to get better. Tonights game 31 on the scoreboard, seethe series 31 i the standings. Its the milkman melkke Melkker Karlsson interview as we continue on nbc bay areas coverage brought to you by toyota. Toyota, lets go places. Welcome back to playoff central here on nbc bay area. We will show you every goal scored in tonights 31 penguins win over san jose. Well also show you me talaltme with the national anthem. Whats it like when youre on youre one game away from winning the stanley cup . Some of these guys on the penguins, their dream could be fulfilled. Is this an advantage having two days between games for san jose who can let things go now moving forward where the pressure for pittsburgh is to finish it off . Thats a great point, a great question. If youre pittsburgh, you want to play tomorrow. Its right there, you dont want to prolong this. San jose is in a position now theres nothing to lose. You can throw away every game plan, whatever you have. You have to win one game to pull it off. Your mind starts thinking family, friends, the cusp is right there. Pittsburgh scored one in the first, one in the second, one in the third. San jose scored one off the stick of Melkker Karlsson. He tells us this. What did you see . I tried to hold him off, but everyone does it. They havent called many penalty ies in this series. They call something and then they dont. But, i mean yeah. How frustrating is it to keep playing from behind . Yeah, its frustrating and haunting all the time. Its not a big lead when youre coming in third. Unfortunately, they scored. It was changing all over the place, it looked like. You started getting more chances up and down. I dont know. More frustration just going. Today i think we outshot them. Its hard [ inaudible ] [ inaudible question ] its effective when you get going. Just get the puck from there. Youre on the brink of elimination. How does it feel . Of course, theres another game. If we get that one its game over. That was a rough day for the sharks. Not only the 31 loss here in game 4 but also news that hurdle will miss the rest of the season, will miss the rest of the stanley cup series. Well talk about that report in just a second. Also you can hear from the head coach later in our show. He will address that situation. Welcome back to playoff central. Glad you stuck with us here in the bay area. After this show, we will continue on hd on 721 on comcast cable. 767 on at t, 438 on dish and channel 698 on directv. So when this segment is over, please change the channel. Including this news alert where it was reported by the czech outlet noble sport that hurdle is done for the season. That report says he has a knee injury. Hurdle had great opportunities including that post in game 1. In game 2 he was one of the sharpest forwards but hurdle may be, according to that report, out for the rest of the series. Brownie, lets begin with you. Injuries are not something the sharks had to deal with in the three prior rounds. Maybe its taking its toll more than we even know. We wont know for sure, but definitely thats a blow. Hurdle was finding his game and also its a loss any time you lose anybody. No time for excuses. They need to man up and i think theyve handled this quite nicely. The sharks obviously won the game the other day on saturday when they found out hurdle was unavailable for the game here on game 3. Turn the channel over to csi california. Im brodie brazil. See you over on csn. Im jessica aguirre. Raj 2shot and im raj mathai. Welcome to this prime time edition of nbc bay area news. This is part ur thanks for joining us. Im jessica aguirre. And im roger mathai. This is part of the our sharks stanley cup coverage. All that excitement for the stanley cup final, but this dream season now on the verge of coming to a crashing end. This is a live look right outside the shark tank. We got about 17,000 disappointed fans going home after the penguins win this game. Were going to go back to our team of reporters and sportscasters at the shark tank in just a few minutes. First some latebreaking headlines. Nbc confirms that Hillary Clinton has received the magic number of delegates needed to become the Presumptive Democratic president ial nominee. We are on the brink of a historic, historic, unprecedented moment but we still have work to do, dont we . We have six elections tomorrow, and were going to fight hard for every single vote, especially right here in california that was clintons reaction moments after the news broke that she went over the 2,381 delegates needed to clinch the nomination. This makes her the first woman in the president ial party to make it to the road to the white house. Bill clinton started last night in los gatos and went around california for 17 hours. He aimed his sharpest words at republican candidate donald trump. Clintons democratic rival Bernie Sanders is refusing to give up on the campaign, though. Hes in San Francisco tonight where his campaign called tonights news a rush to judgment. The point is that tomorrow in california, we have the most important primary. The people of california have the right to determine who is going to be president of the united states, not necessarily having to listen to ap or nbc. And i hope that they will come out in large numbers and make it clear that they want real change in this country. Now, sanders went on to say that clinton does not have and will not have the pledged delegates to secure the nomination. He says hell continue to fight on until julys National Convention and looks forward to winning here in california. Sanders will be in santa monica tomorrow for the official Election Night party. Tonight hes at a rally. A poll shows 8 Million People will be voting in californias president ial primary. That would represent a turnout of more than 44 . The highest turnout the state has had was back in 2008 at more than 57 . The lowest turnout . Back in 2012 with just 31 . Tomorrow, as you know, is election day for us here in california. A big primary. Lots of other issues in the races in front of voters. Later in our newscast, well check in with political analyst maury gershwin. Helen chavez, wife of cesar chavez, has died. Thats mrs. Chavez standing on the right with her husband and six of their eight children. The post said she passed away today at the age of 88 at a hospital in barkersfield. Shes credited with helping her husband empower farm workers inside california and beyond. Lets get back to the shark tank. It didnt go well tonight, the stanley cup turning into a heartbreak. You may have seen the game here in the nbc bay area. Robert hanna joins us from the shark tank. Robert, 20 years of watching this team. Were not giving up hope, are we . Reporter no, we are not. In fact, there are still fans out here cheering and the shark tank was really rocking tonight, as you might imagine, because this is a stanley cup final. Of course, the sharks were skating for their playoff lives trying to keep alive in this swing game and try to keep from going three games to one down, but they didnt do it. Losing a hardfought game to the penguins, and fans we talked to couldnt really hide their disappointment but still sounded loyal and kind of optimistic. It was a pretty slow game. In the beginning they were going pretty fast back and forth, back and forth, and then it just slowed down, the sharks kept slowing down in the defensive end and they kept letting it go, turnover after turnover and it went from there. Today they slipped on the passing and it wasnt very good today. Did you have a fun experience, though . Yeah, it was fun. I was hoping for a better outcome, but unfortunately the sharks didnt pull through tonight. Still optimistic, though . A little bit. Reporter you never know, you know. Look at the warriors. They were down three games and they came back, so if the warriors can do it, the sharks can do it. Lets go, sharks. Go, sharks. Well, thats right. All is not lost, and the warriors are a good team to get inspiration from. But the comeback is going to have to start in pittsburgh on thursday and hopefully they can get it done there and bring the series back to sap center for game 6. Im going to hold onto my press pass. Live in san jose, robert honda, nbc bay area news. Very good, robert. You are a seasoned reporter. Hold onto that press pass. This series is coming back to bait area, or so we hope. As we mentioned, next stop is pittsburgh, game 5 this thursday night. If the sharks lose, the series is over, but i think we know it might be coming back to san jose. Game 6 sunday night and game 7 back in pittsburgh a week from wednesday. Right now we are getting more reaction from the dressing room. It was a spirit of comeback from the sharks but just not enough. Nbc bay areas carl rush will join us later in this newscast. If you bleed teal, we want to see it. Nbcbayarea. Com. To send us your photos post them onto our facebook or twitter pages. Good evening, im meteorologist jeff ranieri. A cool 59 but still some milder weather after the sun sets in walnut creek at 72. Then a boy stabbed during a bank robbery in the east bay. The new details were learning about the suspect and the boys condition. To the bank turned into a trip to the er. This is where police say a woms before she allegedly robbed a cuom what started out to be a trip to the bank turned into a trip to the emergency room. Reporter a 12yearold boy was simply waiting for a Family Member to finish an appointment inside this wells fargo in san leandro when 42yearold stabbed him two times. He thought he was being punched in the back. That punch in the back was actually a knife entering his body. He had just arrived to town to visit family. I can only imagine what the boy was feeling. Shocked and scared, probably frightened right now. Reporter another person was making a cash deposit. Security guards were able to detain her for a short time before she rushed out and right in the hands of police. In cases like this as people can imagine, the first thing that would come to mind is shes mentally unstable. That we dont know right now. Reporter the suspect is in Police Custody charged with assault with a deadly weapon, but depending society vand seve the boys wounds, it could be p upgraded to attpted murder. There is growing outrage tonight against a judge who sentenced a former stanford swimmer to just six months in jail for sexually assaulting a woman outside a fraternity house. Turner could have gotten up to 10 years in prison. Instead six months in jail. There is actually a petition to remove that judge as well. Absolutely. Many students are appalled for about, but theyre really glad to hear it is being talked about, both here and also nationwide. Reporter many faculty and students are in disbelief after a former swimmer was sentenced to six months in jail instead of the maximum punishment of 10 years in prison. 21yearold brock turner was sentenced to six months in jail. He could be out on probation in as little as three months. This woman is going to be a lifetime of grief. Six months is not enough for something that serious. Reporter in a powerful letter to the judge which has since gone viral, the victim urged the court for a strict sentencing saying, in part, you took away my worth, my privacy, my energy, my time, my safety, my intimacy, my confidence, my own voice, until today. In turners defense, his father also wrote a letter to the judge saying incarceration was not an appropriate punishment for, quote, 20 minutes of action. He shot two Police Officers in a traffic stop before hiding in a fremont house where he was soon surrounded by a swat team. The two officers are still hospitalized. One is improving, the other remains in critical condition. Anger over multiple freeway shootings sent the mayor to sacramento today with a demand for action. Theyre hoping a camera crackdown will put an end to scenes like this one which involve gang shootings along the freeway. The mayor wants the state to pay for surveillance cameras along highway 80 and highway 4. Were local officials, so we dont really have any sayso whats occurring over the state freeway. But what we can do is what were doing today. Todays meeting with governor sapp is the first step to bringing state lawmakers on board. They want to get 50,000 to pay for those roadway improvements. Another donald trump rally in san jose today, but this one was a much different tone. His supporters are demanding answers after last thursdays violent downtown rally. Supporters now claim the city of san jose didnt do enough to protect them. And they say the mayor ordered officers to stand down. Its a claim that mayor sam ricardo denies. I am mad and mad as hell and im not going to take it anymo anymore. What we saw was a violent situation from a pure thug, and were going to do everything we can so we make more arrests. Police say more arrests are imminent and they hope more witnesses and victims come forward to identify their attackers. Well, the president ial race is the big contest in tomorrows california primary, but it also has lots of state and local races and even some school bond questions you may be interested in. Nbcs bared political analyst is here now. Begin with the presidency, and lets start with Hillary Clinton who now has enough delegates to secure that nomination. Thats the claim, of course, but remember, what sanders said, its not the superdelegates that count as much as the pledged delegates. Tomorrow theyre at stake, and as far as sanders is concerned, the more he wins, the more he can make his case. Hillary clinton says a much different thing, we know that. Lets talk about congress. The 7th Congressional District in the south bay have drawn a lot of attention. Tell us why. Five candidates are in this race, but it may be a grudge match between incumbent mike honda and fellow delegate r roe khanna. This time khanna has a better name recognition while honda are awaiting the results of a very painful ethnics investigation. Incumbent jim bell are having a little bit of a contentious race here. It begins and ends with money, lots of it. The oil in this industry has fueled a campaign with 350,000 nobody expected. To that end, the next environmental pack led by Thomas Speier has been given by john bell. And proposition aa is one that everyone will contend with. Tell bus about that one. Weve got the partial tax to curb coastal flooding and restore bay wetland, if you will. Thats going to be applied to everyone in all nine counties if the measure wins an overall twothirds vote. A very novel thing to do here. We havent seen it before. So, yeah, whether its the presidency, whether its the bond, whatever, weve got something tomorrow for everyone all the way from national to local issues. We also have you as well tomorrow. Were grateful for that. The primary is tomorrow. On our home page if you want to get some information, click on our voters edge election guide. Its an indepth information on candidates. Put in your zip code and you can find out specifically whats on your ballot. Three of the biggest sports event in the world are are happening in the bay area. The nba finals, the stanley cup final, and also tonight, copa america, and thats the star player who might be more popular than steph curry and bernard james. Messi is representing us in santa ana, and everyone is hoping for that messi magic. Nine hours before kickoff, these fans were already parked as leyland stadium. They were hoping to see leonardo messi. Its that magic and those seemingly impossible goals that has many people calling messi the greatest player of all time. His fans will go to almost any length to get a glimpse of him, like these folks who rushed to san jose state over the weekend to peek under that fence for just a look at messi and the Argentinian National team practice. Fans of certain athletes, especially messi, are passionate and extreme fans. They would do anything to come and watch him, even if its just a small glimpse. Reporter soccer players say its messis humility that brings such a great following. He has that charisma on and off the field. Even Michelle Steven son is in awe of the player from argentina. If we won or if we lost, it would be a once in a lifetime experience. Messi didnt start tonight because of an injury. Ill send him a text. Its coming. Fans from around the world are in santa colllara tonight. He plays in barcelona, but for matches like this, he plays for his country. If you had your car stolen in the bay area, you are not alone. The bay area, it turns out, is among the top regions in the nation with the worse car thefts in the country. In fact, San Francisco had more than 30,000 car thefts. That includes oakland and hayward. The ranking is encouraging, though, because San Francisco had the most thefts the year before and now its actually 1 to 5. Modesto made the top 10 list including stockton, vallejo, and fairfield. Oakland is the target of Donald Trumps derogatory statements of how low that number is. There is also a widening disparity that experts say contributes to a cycle of violence there. Our investigative reporter, steven stock, is here with a closer look at the issue. Jessica, we found a vibrant and booming part of oakland where tech giants are moving and jobs are plentiful. But nearby, we also found another part of oakland that still lags behind the rest of the city where the only boom comes from the sound of guns. From coaching football to neighborhood youngsters to raising his family on these streets, 54yearold todd walker has invested his entire life in oakland. This is the mouthpiece that be in your mouth. Reporter walker should know about putting mouthpieces in bodies in caskets. While hes volunteered as a football coach for 20 years, he earns his living as a funeral home assistant. Over the years, walker has buried more than 20 of his teenage football players. Every one of them shot to death on the streets around the fields where they once played. Theres a kid that you probably held as a baby, now youre rolling them in a casket. Its sad. Reporter while the overall crime rate in oakland is down, dont tell that to christopher ellis. His 14yearold son davon, a rising football star, was murdered on these streets in february 2015. I dont allow any of my kids to walk down the streets of east oakland anymore. Reporter less than five miles away from the coachs whistle lives a very different kind of oakland. A booming economy with high tech opening downtown every month. Unemployment down by 8 . Murders and arrests much higher here. What were calling oakland hills, the disparity grows even more. The average salary three and a half times what it is in east oakland. And where they only had one murder, four gun arrests and 35 assaults. Contrast that with 1,000 assaults and 90 gun arrests. The census data shows 18 of unemployment and 21,000 People Living below the poverty line. You have highly impacted, poor communities. Reporter dr. Howard penderhughes is a professor of social and Behavioral Sciences at usf. Where businesses have left, where government has essentially pulled out, and that youve had a largescale public and private investment in those communities. He also works with oaklands prevention institute, dedicated to finding solutions to the root causes of inner city violence. Thats why i call it structural violence, because it happened as a result of government, either policy, economic policy, or neglect. Whats your administration doing to fix that . So we decided to ask government leaders about exactly that. It is not just one thing, it is a robust economy that provides opportunities for those who have been left out in the past. Libby shaft grew up in oakland, lived here all her life. She recognizes the economic disparities that still divide her city. We still look at the root causes, and by that i mean better jobs, better educational outcomes. Were looking at really building the economy in oakland in an equitable way. Shaft points to the reduction in the crime rate to show that improvements have already been made. But as we walk the streets, we notice that trying to bring prosperity has another problem. Housing is skyrocketing, forcing many longtime residents out. We see this disgrace happening, and the only way that doesnt happen is through very planned, mindful approaches. How do you get the money that is coming into downtown oakland very well, how do you get that out into these communities . Oakland has an affordability crisis right now, and its not just about the cost of hawesing. Its about the ability for our residents to afford that housing. If you asked the average teenager on the streets of oakland, theyll tell you, theres nothing for us to do. Reporter for residents like christopher ellis, its too late. Hes already lost a son. Hes afraid if more isnt done and soon, hell lose his community. The last thing youre telling me is be safe. Thats because you know now they might not come back. So that end, mayor shaft says her administration has already secured 23 million for oakland promise, a program which will pay for lowincome youth to go to college. But the mayor says much more needs to be done. Thats why oakland has become part of a National Movement that is now taking a Public Health approach towards dealing with all this violence. Its an effort that mayor shaft says will take years and the entire community to solve. No simple fixings here. Thats powerful words, they might not come back. Can you imagine saying that at your home thinking you never know from day to day . Thats the reality in some parts of oakland right now. Thank you, stephen. If you have a tip for stephen or anybody in the investigative unit, give us a call at 188899618889 1888996tips or send steve an email. Theyre battling a royal wildfire in howard county.
