Nearly 100 people marched across the Golden Gate Bridge today, many holding up signs and chanting in honor of the marchers in selma who was met with teargas and billy clubs when they marched for equal rights in 1965. Today as marchers say while progress has been made towards civil rights for all, theres still a lot more work to be done. Segregation and separation is still happening. And i want to see it stopped. Back then they were saying black lives matter. And we are still saying unfortunately, that black lives matter, brown lives matter. And in this country today, 50 years later after selma, we still have a situation where theyre trying to todays march was peaceful and did not disrupt traffic. No arrests, no trouble at all reported. President obama traveled to selma, alabama, today to join tens of thousands who are celebrating the 50th anniversary of bloody sunday. A pivotal turning point in the civil rights movement. Jay gray was there for the president s visit and zwroinjoins us live from selma where the celebration continues. Jay . Reporter good evening, peggy. Voices of freedom climb above the clouds in selma just like they have for a half century here. President barack obama reporter celebrating lewis and those who marched here as heroes, the president stressed the journey is not over. We honor those who walked so we could run. We must run so our children soar. Reporter following in the footsteps of those who came before them the president and his family walked across the infamous bridge this afternoon. Theyll be followed by thousands tomorrow during whats become an annual march to remember here. And just like 50 years ago, there will be a Church Service at the brown chapel in the morning before tomorrows march. That is the latest live here in selma, im jay gray. Back to you. Jay, thank you very much. Coming up next well introduce you to a mayor in washington state, hes not only endorsing recreational marijuana, but pinning his hopes for revitalization on it. Plus our Investigative Unit looks into claims that an agency meant to protect you actually dropped the ball. Well have an update on what happened after our story aired. Straight ahead. Edward snowden is making a public plea for switzerland to grant him asylum. He spoke to a crowd in geneva after the viewing of the oscarwinning documentary about his case. He leaked secret information to Media Outlets in 2013. After fleeing the country, he was granted temporary asylum in russia. Today we talked about wanting to return to switzerland where he once worked undercover for the cia. I do think switzerland would be a great sort of political option because of their historical neutrality because of some of the involvement in the past. Switzerland asserts that rules matter and defense of our liberties matter. Snoed season charged with two counts of theft of government property. If he comes back to the United States for a trial, he could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison. While snowden is seen as a criminal others see him as a whistleblower whistleblower. Here in the bay area an agency designed to listen to and protect whistleblowers is being blasted by one of its own. It now appears that washington is listening. Vicky nguyen has the latest. Reporter last week we told you about derrell whitman, a whistleblower investigator who got so fed up he blew the whistle on his own agency. Now it looks like someones listening. Were here for a very serious purpose today. Reporter they showed up outside the San Francisco headquarters of the osha region 9 office. I know he went public on nbc. Reporter in a show of support for derrell whitman. For the past five years, hes worked for osha as a whistleblower investigator. His job . To look at claims of retaliation against workers who spoke out about Public Safety issues. When i found that this agency was abusing them neglecting them and ignoring them then i had to stand up and report that. Reporter whitman says he discovered a pattern of mismanagement and pressure to meet quotas. He says managers told him to close out cases quickly instead of investigating them. Creates victims for the whistleblowers that come to us. Reporter oshas own numbers show the agencyissued merit findings 16 times out of 562 investigations since 2009. Thats just 2. 8 of the cases. Nationally, the numbers are equally dismal at 2. 7 . Whitman says those numbers should be closer to 30 . But after he shared his story with the Investigative Unit whitman got a call from the United States office of special counsel. He says the agency is now looking into his claims and considering whether to take them to the office of the inspector general. He calls it a step forward. When we dont step up and do the right thing, its not just us. Its not just our fellow worker. Its the public as a whole thats then at risk. Reporter meanwhile, whitmans story has energized workers for the union. They want penalties for companies that retaliate against workers who blow the whistle and theyre calling on the department of labor to protect the public. They have to clean this agency up. They have to start enforcing the law and they have to start protecting whistleblowers and putting these executives in jail for threatening the health and safety of not only the workers but the public at large. Reporter its the reason whitman put his own career on the line to speak out for the millions of workers in safetysensitive Industries Like airlines or pipeline safety. He says they look to osha for protection when they raise red flags. And right now, he says they arent getting it. Americans are ready to begin to reach out and say, this is the kind of society we want. We teach this to our children. I keep thinking if we teach our children to be honest to report problems to work with people cooperatively, thats what we want. Reporter speaking out has come at a cost for whitman. The whistleblower investigator now turned whistleblower himself. I am on ice as it were. Ive been ordered not to talk about my work inside the agency. So here i am. Im talking about my work inside the agency. Reporter osha declined to comment for the story. Whitman still has his job but he has been given a notice of removal. He says he is encouraged that the u. S. Office of the special counsel is taking up his case. Of course we will let you know what happens. If you have a tip for our Investigative Unit give us a call at 888996tips or send us an email.
