children. tonight, the investigative unit traveled across the country to find children laboring in tobacco fields in north carolina. investigative reporter steven stock is back with the danger they face and why their own families team powerless to stop it. >> advocates say they pulled children as young as 9 years old out of these tobacco fields in north carolina and the international group human rights group found children young her the fruits and vegetable fields working coast to coast to help their parents earn enough money necessary to survive. in the fields of eastern north carolina, this is what they call topping. hidden cameras follow the workers down the roads of tobacco. documenting the skill it takes to quickly and effectively take the flower off the top of the plant. >> you do it without gloves? >> yes. >> how old are you? >> 14. >> like all the young workers we followed in north carolina and california during our investigation, we're not revealing this teenager's real name or the exact location of where she works. and in this case, for extra protection, we're hiding her face to prevent retaliation. later, the teen changes her story, reveals that she's actually only 13 years old. then, there is this girl who we'll call maria. maria described how her mother first prepared her to talk tobacco all to help out with the family's finances. >> she told me -- don't yank the flower off. stuff like that. >> farmer families typically follow the harvest. >> the association of farm worker opportunity programs has been following working families in agriculture all her life. she was once a migrant child farm worker, too. >> we would have kids that are working in, for example, the tobacco harvest, where it's perfectly legal for a 12-year-old to be working out there, harvesting tobacco to use for an unlimited amount of hours, despite the fact that they're absorbing high levels of nicotine through their skin, which would be the equivalent to about 12 cigarettes a day. >> do you think it's okay forring children to work in the tobacco fields as the adults do? >> no. >> reporter: those that supervise the work like this field boss say they don't approve of children working in these fields. this man insists if it happens it's without his knowledge and that the children misrepresent their age. >> they come here yesterday. >> you don't pay any children to work here. >> no, only the workers. >> in fact, some of the young workers admit they lie about their age and hide from the bosses in order to keep on working to keep on contributing to the family's
