That person is going to be okay. I cant get into the particulars. As soon as we can get information out to you guys, we will let you know. Were all anxious and we want to know whats going on. Im not sure if you could hear that, but she said that the deputy is expected to be okay. We hope to have a live report from that area in just a bit. Our other top story this midday, just in time for summer, San Francisco leaders are thinking outside of the box to bring back muchneeded tourist dollars. Nbc bay areas kris sanchez is here. She has a look at that expensive new campaign ad and some of the numbers that we didnt see with that video, kris. Its only expensive if it doesnt work, right . San francisco tourism has actually been on the upswing, and this year the citys travel association wants to do what it can to surpass the projection of nearly 24 million visitors expected this year. So heres a look at San Franciscos firstever tv ad. San francisco i really come alive we see a lot of San Franciscos iconic neighborhoods and many of the things that San Francisco is famous for. It is, again, the firstever tv ad, and it is part of a 6 Million Campaign folks will see in new york, chicago, d. C. , and boston and houston. Some elements will also target international markets. It was just released but already the response has been a little rough. Some people say it misses San Franciscos epic charm, but others say it also fails to show San Francisco as it really is, and that is sometimes gritty and grimy. San franciscos battling headlines about store closures in union square, also openair drug use and sales. Well show you the San Francisco crime data on our screen. There has been a 25 increase in homicides, 17 increase in robbery, 6 increase in awe though theft. But there are some positive numbers too. A 10 decrease in burglary, 22 decrease in rape reports, and a 7 decrease in crime overall. Now, i did talk with the head of San Francisco travel about the difficulty of trying to sell the city when the headlines are so rough. These are some of the positive images of San Francisco. I know that there has been a lot of, you know, challenges for the city right now, but there are also a lot of really wonderful things about our city that we wanted to showcase with this campaign. We really wanted to challenge the skewed narrative. I do think that there are a lot of positive experiences. We know that 92 of people last year who visited San Francisco said themtded to return to San Francisco. And heres hoping that they do, right . The campaign is going to run through october, aiming for summer and fall visitors. We get a lot of them, of course. And also hoping that people who come to the super bowl in 2026 at levis stadium will spend some time putting San Francisco on their itinerary as well. Marcus . Definitely hoping for that. Lets take a live look at San Francisco this morning. As you can see here, this is where mayor london breed is outlining her twoyear Budget Proposal for the city. So, yesterday the mayor said that plan includes expanding shelter beds. It will also increase Affordable Housing slots for the formerly unhoused. Shes also promising to focus on Police Staffing and Public Safety. We are listening in to the speech. Looks like they have a quick break right now. But of course well continue to follow whats going on with that. We will deliver you those updates both online as well as our evening forecast starting for you at 4 30. Happening now, testimony resuming in the preliminary hearing surrounding a violent confrontation between a former San Francisco fire commissioner and an unhoused man. A man was hit in the head with a metal bar and suffered a skull fracture. The 28yearold is centering assault and battery charges. New at 11 00, an oakland homicide detective charged with lying on the stand says that police have information that will clear his name. These are photos of officer thong tran, who was in court this morning. Weve learned from his attorney that has subpoenaed the files from opd that provide evidence to prove his client is not guilty. A judge gave police 28 days to respond to that request. Detective tran faces two felony perjury charges after allegedly lying under oath in a murder trial back in 21st century fox and a preliminary hearing in 2014. Trans attorney released a statement calling the charges baseless. Investigators are still piecing together what led to a deadly twocar crash along highway 1. Nbc bay areas ginger saab said both cars ended up plunging into a la goon. Reporter there are unanswered questions, but investigators in redwood city are confirming two men died on the scene, one woman surviving. She was brought to stanford medical. You can see how impactful that crash was on highway 1 south of the state beach not far from the town. Chp says one of the vehicles crossed over double yellow lines and crashed head on with the other vehicle, leaving the subaru partially submerged in a la goon. One lane remained open last night while investigators were on scene. The exact cause is still being investigated at this time. The woman in her 60s had major injuries. We do not have an update on her condition this morning, but it is believed her husband is one of the two men who died on the scene. The chp confirms roads around the crash site have been reopened and all lanes are clear. In redwood city, ginger continue harrow saab. Frustrations are boiling over in oaklands rock ridge neighborhood with neighbors demanding more to be done to boost safety there. It follows a recent string of crimes including one last sunday caught on security video where a 63yearold woman was attacked outside market hall. Police say the attackers were part of a group of nine minors recently busted in a string of robberies. But thats not easing concerns for people who live there. They packed a meeting last night with police and city leaders. At times, that meeting got heated with people saying they dont feel safe. Leaders say they understand the concern. The key is to hold them accountable, hold these perpetrators accountable. That could involve various psychological testing, various programs they must be required to go through as condition of probation or while theyre temporarily incarcerated. All sorts of things can happen, but nothing can happen if you dont catch these people. We have to catch them and give them appropriate consequences. Of the nearly 1,000 robberies reported to Oakland Police this year, only a handful occurred in the rock ridge neighborhood. The neighbors say authorities are not doing enough to hold criminals accountable. Taking a live look outside, this time from the east bay in oakland. We are continuing to follow that breaking news out of salinas where a Monterey County sheriffs deputy has been shot while serving an eviction notice. Paul dudley from our sister station is live at the scene. Paul, what are you learning . Reporter well, marcus and laura, still a very active scene at this point and really still more questions than answers as a number of different Law Enforcement agencies investigate this shooting. At this point, what we do know from a Monterey County press conference that just wrapped up here about an hour and a half ago is that one deputy is injured and has been take on the a local hospital. Their condition is unknown at this point. We do know that the suspect in this shooting is still barricaded in a building in the area here, possibly in an Apartment Building or maybe a home of some sort. We also know there is a shelter in place for a number of different streets in this area as police here are calling the shooter armed and dangerous. Also a helicopter has been flying around the perimeter of this shooting really since it happened. The details are Still Limited according to salinas mayor kimberly craig. We know a person who was served papers fired a gun multiple times inside of that home or apartment in the area of east market and sun street, then the suspect barricaded themselves inside that home. The monterey Sheriffs Office telling everybody to shelter in place. They havent given the all clear and havent told anybody to evacuate just yet. Again, the deputy in this case has been take on the a hospital, his condition is unknown. Again, that suspect is still believed to be in a building in this area. Thats why youre going to still see all of this Law Enforcement presence out here as they continue to investigate this very active shooting, active and current investigation out here. Thats the latest. Back to you guys. Paul dudley, thank you very much. Switching gears, nasa holding its first public conference about what its doing to track down the source of a strange, unidentified flying object spotted in the sky. Abbey fernandez is in our newsroom this midday. More on that report should be coming out soon. It is. But first let me tell you last joona is a had a panel of 16 experts to track and study what the government is calling unidentified flying phenomenon. Theyre conducting a meeting before coming out with its findings. Nasa says the report is less focused on the past and more focused on the future. Take a listen. Indeed, the primary objective of this Incredible Team of experts is not to go back and look at grainy footage of uaps but to gives us a roadmap to guide us for future analysis. This is the very Scientific Method that nasa holds true to its heart. Earlier this year, National Intelligence officials said they had received over 350 new reports of uaps since march of 2021. Many of those sightings spotted by u. S. Military troops. A significant number have been identified as some sort of balloon entities. Other reports have been attributed to drones, weather events, and even debris floating in the sky. You know i always want to hear from our viewers at home. I asked you on twitter what you think of these uaps, what they are. Heres what you told me. Here it goes. 46 , majority of you, think theyre aliens. 17 say theyre Foreign Government aircraft. 29 think theyre drones, meaning civilian drones, airborne degree like i mentioned, and 8 think there are other things out there. Ill leave this poll up for the next couple hours. Go ahead and vote. Let me know what you think they are. As i mentioned earlier, nasas meeting is still going on right now. You can watch it by going to nasas website or its youtube channel. Marcus and laura . Aliens you say. All right. Thanks, abbey. Turning now to our climate in crisis, following a wet winter, the bay area is still facing fire danger but of course it looks different than it has in the last few years. Today in the south bay youll see pg e. Theyre going to take action to minimize the risk. Nbc bay areas bob redell says that we shouldnt be surprised if we see those helicopters buzzing above. Reporter starting today, continuing on through friday, pg e will be conducting inspections of its large transmission towers and power poles throughout santa clara county, this in an effort to make sure their power lines are secure and not at risk of coming down during high winds and causing a wildfire. This is also to help prepare for potential Public Safety power shutoffs. Workers withhe utility will be conducting these inspections on the ground and in the air via choppers. You might hear that overhead. Today theyre in east hills and san jose, milpitas and surrounding border communities. Tomo los gatos and neighboring hills. Friday, northern santa clara county, cupertino and sunnyvale. Last night the Fire Protection Fire District held their annual town hall to encourage residents to be prepared for this years wildfire season. You are the most important resource in preparing for wildfire, and tomorrow you will also be the most importance resource preparing for wildfire. Cal fire reminds us if you live in a socalled wild land interface, a place in the hills like where im at or on woods, properties with a lot of vegetation, make sure you maintain 100 feet of Defensible Space around your country, so cut back large plants and trees so theres less fuel to burn around your house. This com after we recently got a new outlook on this years fire season, 2023, u. S. Wildfire forecast from accuweather, meteorologists predict in california, 400,000 to up to a million acres will burn this season, putting the state at average or slightly above average for fire danger, which will be later this summer when things really start to heat up and these fuels start to dry. Bob redell, nbc bay area news. The napa county drought emergency is over about a year after governor gavin newsom did the same for the entire safe. Theyre still working to preserve ground wavter. This years storms have increased reserves. However, water projections for the end of 2023 show levels dropping. Lets get a look at our forecast right now. Weve noticed that marine layer hanging on, keeping things a little cooler. Its been cooler, but weve also been keeping an eye on everything going on, including as you talked about that drought emergency ending. And were still seeing some high levels of our reservoirs even well after all the rain we had. Look at marin water. The reservoirs there 98 of capacity, and many of them are at least 94 of capacity right now. And weve also seen daily thunderstorms developing over the sierra as that snow melt continues. Take a look at all the lightning strikes that have developed in the upper elevations yesterday afternoon. And i do think well see the same thing today, possibly the next few days. Just be weather aware if youre traveling to the east of the bay area. And weve seen the clouds just draped over San Francisco, giving us another very cool day as our high temperatures only reach the low 60s. We have an early afternoon game for giants. First pitch at 12 45. It will be 60 degrees and windy. Well start to see the sun peeking out. I think there will be a little more sunshine for the afternoon. Overall, a really nice day there, but kind of cool as our temperature peaks at about 62 degrees. Well be in the low 70s for the south bay. Expect los gatos to reach 73 degrees. Also 73 in morgan hill and san jose. And also low 70s from walnut creek over to livermore, while the inner bay will be in the mid to upper 60s, for hayward, 66 degrees. About the same in san mateo, upper 50s in half moon bay. Palo alto reaching 72 degrees. Well be in the low 60s. Downtown and in the Mission District in San Francisco, novato reaching 73 degrees and 77 in ukiah today. As we go through the forecast, were looking at a slight warming trend getting under way. There still will be those showers and thunderstorms for the sierra and areas off to the east, but it looks like at least for the weekend we will see some warmer temperatures moving our way, but it doesnt last long. So as we take a look at livermore, those temperatures going up for weekend, peaking on saturday and sunday in the mid80s, and were back down in the upper 70s for monday. Look at next week for next wednesday, it may only be 73 degrees there for an inland valley. So were going to see these temperatures giving us a bit of a taste of summer for the weekend with highs in the low to mid80s for the many of our inland areas. Once again well see those temperatures dropping back to the low 70s for the middle of next week, while San Francisco is not going to see as much of a drastic change in temperatures. But we may see a little more sunshine for the weekend, highs in the mid to upper 60s for saturday and sunday. Laura and marcus. Thanks, kari. Happening now, former San Francisco District Attorney jason boudin has a new job. Hell be at the Berkeley School of law. He was recalled from office after San Franciscos current d. A. , brooke jenkins, quit her job and campaigned to replace him. She was appoint by the city mayor, london breed, and won the election to fill the seat in november.
