Joining us for our midday newscast. Im isaiah washington. Im laura garcia. Civil rights leaders are accusing the city of missing out on money to combat organized crime. What did the naacp have to say . Reporter they want to know what the city of oakland missed a deadline to apply for millions of dollars in grant money from the state to fight organized retail crime in that city. They want to know who in the city dropped the ball and have that person or persons held accountable. The city administrator last week said that opd and community leaders, the Police Department had put together the application, but the citys economic and Workforce Development department failed to follow through and actually submit that application. During this mornings news conference, which we see video of right now, leaders presented a tenpoint plan as you mentioned to combat crime in oakland. Their plan calls for, among other things, for opd to be staffed with a minimum of 1,000 police officers. They want the rehiring of chief Leronne Armstrong, who was fired, and among other demands, a fully staffed 911 center. There have been some persistent crime problems in oakland, but ive never seen what oakland is experiencing today. There are parts of the city you could go to and not have to worry about your car being broken into and that you could feel safe. You can drive through the city of oakland today and go from one end to the other and not see a patrol car. At least 89 people have been killed in oakland this year. Thats on pace to exceed the 113 homicides from last year. Just this past friday on 38th avenue, a mother inside her home was struck by a stray bullet, taken to the hospital, where sadly she died. A City Council Member representing that district says the woman was a mother of two young children. Tonight, the Oakland Police commission will hold a special meeting and are expected to give an updated time line on their search for a new police chief. Oakland has had eight Police Chiefs over the last few years, havent had a Permanent Police chief since sheng thao fired chief Leronne Armstrong who was found to have mishandled police misconduct. The mayor says the Police Commission is not doing its job in finding a permanent replacement and has threatened to declare a state of emergency if the commission doesnt present a list of applicants by the end of the year. The final candidates are set to be selected by the week of october 9th. Reporting live, bob redell, nbc bay area news. Really interesting report there. Thank you, bob. New at 11 00, the San FranciscoPolice Department giving an update on their efforts to clean up the citys doug trade. The sfpd tweeted today with new statistics about their crackdown in the tender loin and south of market areas. The crackdown started on may 29th. Since then, there have been 1,106 arrests. Today elon musk is meeting with israeli Prime Minister benjamin netanyahu. Protesters are meeting with him at every step he makes across the bay area. The message they want to send, its more than the social media platform x, formerly known as twitter. Nbc bay areas kris sanchez joins us from fremont. This is one of the stops both the troets protesters and the Prime Minister made today. Reporter these groups call it unacceptable with an x. They are flying around here trying to get that message out to the Prime Minister of israel, benjamin netanyahu, that they disagree with his policies. Hundreds of protesters lined fremont avenue with signs and messages for benjamin netanyahu. Most said theyre protesting what they call antidemocratic judicial reforms that they say undermine democracy in israel. But on top of that, some also object to the fact that netanyahu is meeting with elon musk, who they say is allowing hate speech to grow unchecked on the social media platform formerly known as twitter. They say that for both musk and netanyahu, this is really just a photoop. Hes very used to a picture opportunity. He wants to show he has legitimacy and everything is usual in his world, which its not. The fact you have the held of the jewish state meeting someone who has promoted and fanned the flames of antisemitism is not only ironic, its deeply worrisome. Reporter hundreds of protesters also met the Prime Minister when he arrived at Mineta San Jose International airport this morning. Many of the protesters are the same one who is made their way to the tesla plant in fremont and plan on going to San Francisco, where netanyahu will be later today. They tell me they are showing solidarity with the hundreds of thousands of protesters in israel who have been turning out week after week. Now, netanyahus meeting with musk also included two renowned heads in the ai world, so its unclear how much time would actually be dedicated to that conversation about hate speech on x when theyre also talking about ai. In fremont, kris sanchez, nbc bay area news. Thank you, kris. New details on the five americans now on their way home to the states after being released from iran. After being released, two of them planning to come here to qatar. The u. S. Also agreeing to unlock 6 billion in Iranian Oil Revenues that had been frozen due to u. S. Sanctions. Josh lederman, doha, qatar. Reporter President Biden said in part, today we are sanctioning former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the Iranian Ministry of intelligence under the levenson act for their involvement in wrongful detentions. He said the sanctions would continue as long as iran persisted in these provocative acts. Secretary of state Antony Blinken also addressed the media. He invoked the memory of bob levenson, for whom the levenson act is named. As happy as we are at the freedom of our fellow citizens, we also are thinking today of bob levenson, who is not among them, and who is presumed deceased. Bobs legacy, however, lives on. It lives on powerfully. The act allows the u. S. To impose sanctions on countries it feels has wrongly imprisoned americans. A followup, authorities detaining a man in connection with a deadly ambush of an l. A. County democracy. That shooting happened saturday night. 30yearold deputy ryan clinkunboomer was killed. He was found inside his patrol car. Surveillance video captured around the time of that shooting shows a car pulling up to the deputys suv and taking off. L. A. That person believes they had been in a road ragetype incident with that same car and driver last week. Last night, mourners gathered outside of the station for a memorial. Hundreds lit candles, sang songs, showing support for the family. Im going to continuously refer to them as cowards, because thats what they are, cowards, to attack a Deputy Sheriff in uniform in a black and white whos just sitting there at a red light about to go out and serve our community. That is absolutely 100 unacceptable. The deputy had been working as a Field Training officer for the past year and a half. He was engaged to his girlfriend just four days before he was killed. And if california can make a dent, you know, with respect, those of you from germany, soon to be the fourth largest economy in the world, the size of 21 american states combined, the scale and scope of what the state of california can do, we think can move the needle. It sure as hell can do this, and forgive me for being longwinded, it can illuminate their deceit. In response to reuters, one of the companies named, american patrol said this issue should be argued in congress, not court system. Every Major Oil Producer is named in the lawsuit. Well, summer is almost over, meaning whale watching season is nearly upon us. And one of the busiest places has been through the heart of monterey. Watchers have seen killer whales, humpback whale, and they can be seen year round. But right now, anchovies have moved up the coast and into monterey bay, and those whales are following the fish. Once theyre there, it is a feeding frenzy. Dolphins also plentiful right now. We usually dont see the common dolphins this high up the coast, but the warm waters from el nino are changing those rules. One day those watchers saw a pod of almost a thousand dolphins. If you want to catch a glimpse of those special animals, take a road trim. You dont have to travel far to south america, africa, alaska, hawaii, to see whales. We have the truly the greatest gathering of the Marine Mammals on the plan net monterey bay. Now, whale watching tourings in monterey bay happen throughout the day. You could even catch the sunset while watching the majestic animals dine on those anchovies. Something you can do today. The anchovies swimming and right . A lot of times when you go to the coast, you can just see the whales in the distance. So you dont have to take a boat tour, but of course thats how you get up close and personal. Pretty amazing. Right in our backyard. That it is. And weve had some beautiful weather, all clear out there, as we look around the bay area. Lets go to fremont right now. Temperatures in the upper 60s, and well reach into the mid70s. So, no need for a jacket. You just need the sunglasses and some sunscreen today, because we are going to continue to have a clear sky even into the afternoon. Wind has been picking up just a little bit as we transition from warmer weather we had last week to some slightly cooler temperatures, that ocean breeze picking up from the south for the south bay, will reach up to about 15 to 20 Miles Per Hour as our temperatures head for the low 80s in cupertino and los gatos. For east bay, its mostly in the upper 70s and low 80s, reaching 77 degrees in hayward. Martinez reaching 80 degrees. And some mid70s for much of the peninsula, down to palo alto, well reach 78 degrees. In San Francisco, upper 60s for the afternoon. Weve also seen a lot more sunshine here, and as we go to the north bay, expect to reach 77 in napa and 84 in ukiah. Were enjoying a cooldown. Every day weve seen showers and thunderstorms developing over the sierra, and that continues for next week. Next week we could be tracking some rain, especially as it moves into the pacific northwest. Well see how close that gets to the bay area. But this time of year, we do typically start to see those storm systems falling apart before they get here. Speaking of storms, heres hurricane nigeria knell the open atlantic. Weve been following all of the tropical activity from both the atlantic and the pacific. The pacific is pretty quiet, so were heading over to see whats going on there. And this is a category 1 hurricane that most recently developed and strengthened. It is expected to briefly become a major hurricane and then curve out to the open atlantic and not really have a major impact on any land areas. But we are making it on through that atlantic list of names. Here we are at the peak of Hurricane Season, and weve mad it through most of those. We do have a few names left, but of course we do still have a lot more Hurricane Season to go as that continues until november, the end of november. So, we are looking at temperatures here in the bay area in the upper 70s, low 80s. Fall officially begins for us on friday. First full day on saturday. Our temperatures get a little warmer, but no major changes. Were enjoying great weather across the bay area, while the coastline and San Francisco remains in the upper 60s to lower 70s. As we turn to our climate in crisis, the current state of the earth is not looking good. According to a new study by a group of international scientists, they looked at nine key elemental factors and found that six of them are, quote, now well outside the safe operating space for humanity, end quote. And that includes climate change, and the study claims that two of the remaining three factors ocean pollution and air pollution are worsening. The only one sign that is showing improvement is the ozone level is decreasing with those aerosol sprays. That was the only thing that was depleting the ozone level. Back to you. Thank you very much.
