Well, San Francisco has been the setting for some great detective stories over the years. The maltese falcon, right . Our next story is a detective story that is helping to shed light on a bit of San Francisco history. Garvin thomas joins us now with tonights bay area proud story. Reporter there are a couple of things i share with the subject of tonights story, an interest in photography and a desire to do any story that has a mystery at its center. Fortunately for this story, its a mystery thats been solved. San francisco is the kind of place where it feels like theres always a great story waiting for you around the next corner, which, in this case, was literally true because our story begins with something sitting right there on a Mission DistrictStreet Corner. It was a small filing cabinet filled with more than 900 photographic slides of life in San Francisco from the 1960s. The person who found it thought David Gallagher might be interested in its content. He was right. I started looking at them, got excited. Reporter david is an avid collector of old San Francisco photos. Displaying many on his website. The ones in the cabinet were a time capsulelike history, of political life and everyday life. This is1966, i believe. Reporter david did have one big question. Who took them . Over the years i realized honoring the photographer, honoring the creator of t material is important. Reporter so david started investigating. D in on photos of an event in g that had newspaper photographers present. If the mystery photographer had a picture of them, maybe they had a picture of him. Now it was davids turn to know just who to turn to. This is absolutely my favorite place in all of journalism, the chronicle archives. Reporter a San FranciscoChronicle Reporter has made a career of diving into the papers Photo Archive for stories. Theres nothing that makes me feel more like a kid than when someone comes to me and says, i have a mystery and maybe you can help me solve it. Japanese tea garden reporter it wasntong before peter found photos of the event and found the mystery photographers image, but still no name. He published a story about the search and soon a reader had an answer for him, very soon. Py two hours. Rr james martin was his name, and he took the pictures while working for the San Francisco school district. It was great news for the history buffs, but also someone else a little guy with the white shoes, thats my brother. Reporter martins family. They were thrilled to be reunited with his rk its a gift, they say, one in which we can all share. Its so great these photos are out i t world. Theyre important to our city. Theyre important to our community and our history. Reporter theyre not just hosted at sfmemory. Org, they are donating them to the San FranciscoPublic Library so everyone can share in them. I lied a little bit. I said the mystery was solved. Well, the first person who found the box on the Street Corner there were three boxes. They grabbed one, went back, got on their bike they could only carry one, got on their bicycle, and the other two were gone. So these are maybe only a third of the photographs. They dont know where the other ones are, the other two boxes are. And they look the same, the file cabinets . I think theyll be revealed soon after watching your story. I hope so. Maybe theyll get hold of us. Release new photos. Thanks, garvin. Like a cliffhanger. Still a mystery. Weather. We had more wildfire activity to the north today. Thats why conditions were so smoggy out there. In fact, i have a look at really what youre not able to see right now. Some updated chances for rainfall. And look at this view here. This is come to your tv to check this out. This is our oakland camera. Normally the downtown skyline is right here. The camera is having a hard time focusing because were getting that smog and particulate matter moving in. Again this really underscores the point here that the worst air quality right now is from oakland to San Francisco. Some realtime monitoring sites putting it in the range of 150 to 205 aqi. When you get above 150 youre in unhealthy and also very unhealthy, so oakland to San Francisco, you certainly need to limit your outdoor exposure even if you dont have any respiratory problems right now, again, because of that increased wildfire activity to the north. So the smoke forecast and where were seeing the fires, it looks like this. In oregon, 12 different fires continue to burn. Again, its become more active over the past couple of days. And in california were watching the smith river complex and the lightning complex continuing to put out more smoke in the past few days. So through tomorrows forecast, were seeing more of that smoke kind of lingering and that haze. So right now im still calling for unhealthy air over the north bay, the east bay. What we have is a system just off to the north and the circulation around this is whats helping to bring down the smoke for tomorrow and mixing it in with the fog for some smoggy conditions. So, again, thats tomorrow and thursday, also cooler than average weather. By friday and saturday well see this one move in from the south and that should help to clear out the smoke here, again, by friday and saturday. Then beyond this as of late last night were now seeing some increasing chances of rain developing in the pacific. That will give us the chance of some rainfall in that sevenday forecast. More coming up but i do want to take you through tomorrow mornings temperatures, and we are going to start off with those numbers in the 50s. Watch out for the smoggy conditions here throughout the bay area. 57 in San Francisco, the east bay right here at 56. Daytime highs for tomorrow staying below average. That will put us at 80 in los gatos. Through the east bay, 81, pleasanton. 76 in redwood city. San francisco, 60s across the board. And for the north bay, 80 here in sonoma. Lets fast forward things into this weekend, and we are expecting dry weather through the weekend. Look at this, by sunday morning, were going to see some rain off to the north and out here in the pacific. By monday the storm system starts to get close and then by next tuesday looking like areas to the north and oregon would have consistent rainfall that would help out with the wildfires. Right now the chance of spotty showers. The big bulls eye up into northern california. The sevenday forecast for sf, well hang on with those 60s for temperatures and, again, next tuesday putting in a spotty rain chance. Well have more looks at the rain chances then all things weather coming up at 5 30. All right, are you looking for a little Seasonal Work .
