Things looking smokey but there is a slight improvement from yesterday. Unhealthy smokey air may have you wondering how do they measure it and how fast is the network that does that. Hilda gutierrez is looking to where those monitors are located. And, hilda, why we dont have more . The number of air monitors has not changed much. Air regulators tell us most are placed miles apart in strategic locations throughout the bay area to measure different types of air pollution. Reporter the air district operates a total of 32 air quality monitoring stations gathered as you can see on this map throughout the bay area. Only 16 of them detect harmful particulate matter such as particulates and wildfire smoke. San francisco and san mateo each has just one monitor in the entire county. This is the only monitoring stations located on or rooftop on arkansas street. This is redwood citys from 2017. Santa clara, contra costa and amida accounting and the rest of the bay area have 30 monitoring stations between them. The bay area Quality Management district says they dont have enough money to place a monitor in every community so the sites are strategically located to give the best coverage. It is based on where people live and population levels. Its based on meteorology go patterns, wind patterns, topography. Where are the pollution sources we want to track and understand and how they may be impacting communities in the bay area. Reporter one of these monitors only cost about 25,000 but an entire station cost hundreds of thousands of dollars over time because you have to add and other equipment in the annual expense of leasing the space. So they started combining air quality data with that of low cost commercial home sensors like the ones by purple air thats all for a couple hundred dollars. The readings are displayed on the realtime air quality map giving them another 4000 outdoor sensors in the bay area. When we combine the air district data with the sensor data which is lower quality but we have more impact. When we combine that together we get a pretty comprehensive picture of the air quality in the bay area. Air Quality Management district said, they use other tools to evaluate conditions and incoming smoke like satellite imagery and Weather Forecast miles. Someone threatened to release compromising photos unless the victims paid them. Nbc coal was in the courtroom. Today the man was sentenced to 18 months in jail and he was convicted for extortion in an incident that pushed ryan to end his life. They say they post as a teenage girl and sent him a racy picture and asked for one in return. When ryan scented they began saying they would send it to family and friends unless they pay 5000. The teen ultimately took his own life in february, 2022. Today bryan smothers says every day she wakes up hoping it has been a nightmare and telling the suspect and the court that her family is forever changed. I know families and talk to people who knew ryan story and we need to continue to have these conversations. He will be released soon but while on parole police can search his devices and social media accounts at any time to make sure he is not targeting others. Of course, i would love more. Extortion is different when it ended somebodys life and there is no loss for that now. Right now i just want him so he cant do this to somebody else. Reporter he was part of a larger scheme based on the ivory coast and he sexually applauded exploits kids online using emily smith and Kathy Johnson on social media. This is the first time in this county that Something Like this has been prosecuted and the person has been convicted for this type of crime. Reporter a crime that is growing. The National Center for missing and exploited children receive more than 10,000 sextortion reports and for ryans mother she devotes most of her time to make sure no other family has to go through this. I came to the school where they were having a new program. It gave me time to build up my skill level to compete and still work with the team that was new as well as i was. The men seen here beating Folsom Lake College 2 to 1 hoping to make it and they start strong with six wins in a row and a goal to make the playoffs despite what other big teams might think. We like being underdogs and it puts us in a situation where we could really shut them up by our performance on the field. For the women the goal is different. Already having a team and continue playing. As much as the coaches want to make history on the soccer pitch they are making an impression on their players because they have perspective of being first generation. Parents coming from mexico.
