Soaring cost for insuring the lives theyve built and the start of football season means millions of fans will be placing their bets online on every couch in your home, every seat in a restaurant. It turns those into casinos. The warning one expert has for young adults deciding to take a chance on legal Online Sports betting. Plus, 1833 tlc mama, a memorable number for a hotline helping mothers postpartum depression affects up to 20 of mothers each year. We explore how the National Effort to get expectant and new moms the much needed Mental Health support they need and. Im soledad obrien. Welcome to matter of fact, the economic toll of our Global Climate crisis is growing with more destructive storms each year, homeowners are now facing increasing steep insurance premiums, especially in areas considered to be high risk. 31 states have seen double digit insurance increases since 2022. Six states, including texas and arizona, have seen 20 to 30 increase. In california for two of the countrys largest insurers recently announced they will no longer write new policies, insure is mandatory for most homeowners with mortgages and condo owners. And that has many people stuck between a rock and a hard place needing coverage. But having fewer options. Our correspondent Dan Lieberman traveled to Orange County to see how thats impacting residents. Oh, this isnt what, 73 year old sherry love thought her retirement years would look like. Do you pay the electric bill or do you pay the gas bill . Now i have to pick and choose. During her 40 year career as a secretary, sherry was careful to set aside enough money to live comfortably in her modest two bedroom condo in Orange County, california. But there was one cost she didnt prepare for a dramatic spike in her monthly hoa fees due to the increasing cost of home insurance. In total, it used to be paying 240, and now were paying 725. Thats a huge increase. Thats a huge increase. Its a struggle. The Condo Community where sherry lives was dropped by their Insurance Company in 2021 because the risk of a wildfire had become too high since theyre required to have insurance, they had no choice but to settle on a new policy with less coverage in a huge price tag. I. I dont go out. I dont go shopping. Utilities and food and everything has gone up. And i shouldnt have to be in that position at this point in my life. Right around the corner from sherry, amber loor lives with her husband in three kids. She says the sudden increases have also been hard on her family. Every time i get the bill in the mail, i just look at it and its disgusting. Were just little families trying to make it in a condo. Your buddy is his mom picking you guys up . Yeah. Amber works as a hairdresser and her husbands in it together. They earn about 100,000 a year. The Median Household Income in their area. Thats not a lot for a family of five in Orange County. So this is absolutely its huge. This is a true crisis. Or you can just look at the terrain here and tell roe, this is a fire risk. This is very typical. Yeah, high wind, uphill, lots of brush, lots of vegetation. And its creates a big problem. I think if they can compare it to Patrick Prendiville is an Insurance Broker representing hundreds of condo associations in Orange County. Our condominium owners being hit harder than Single Family homeowners. The total insured value of a Condominium Association action is much greater than a Single Family home. So that right there is more difficult because its harder to find that much insurance for the entire association. You have a mortgage and you need to get insurance. What do you do . You have the california fair plan as a backup. The fair plan is a state backed insurance option for California Homeowners who cant find an insurer in the private market. The number of enrollees has jumped up 90 in recent years. But for sherry and ambers Condo Community, they dont qualify because they require more coverage than the fair plan allows. Its got limited coverage. Its also very expensive and its not necessarily the solution to the problem. Do you think that the federal government needs to step in and do more here . Yes, i do think the federal government should get involved because if you agree that this is caused by Climate Change, then its everybodys problem. If my insurance is really high, i need to ask myself, why is that . Seren taylor is the Vice President of the personal Insurance Federation of california, an Industry Trade group. Eight of the ten most costly fires on the planet have happened in california in the last six years, and of course, insurers have paid out tens of billions of dollars in claims. Those losses factor into future rates. Insurers are now struggling just to keep up. What are you going to do . I mean, if these costs do keep going up, whats your plan . Im going to have to keep cutting back in other areas. I cant i cant move right now while my kids are in school. If they have to do without some things, thats okay. Well well get by. What makes you want to stay here . Its just home. People live in a in a small town, and theyll live there their whole lives. And thats their home. And this is mine for matter of fact, im Dan Lieberman in Orange County, california. Next on matter of fact, taking a gamble on Online Sports betting. Thats why dawn is trusted to save wildlife affected by oil. Dawn platinum cleans to the squeak. Here. That, of course, means tailgating and all the things that football season brings increasingly. It also means people hopping on their phones to place bets. Football is the most popular sport in the us for Online Gambling, and there are lots of people doing it. Insider intelligence predicts more than 23 Million People will legally place bets online by the end of this year. Today, more than 34 states and the district of columbia have live retail and Online Sports betting, with more states. Joining. But this increase is also raising concerns about gambling addictions. Victor matheson teaches Sports Economics at the college of the holy cross. Professor Victor Matheson its so nice to talk to you. I think the word explosion in Online Gambling is an appropriate word. What does this mean for states . Because clearly they have a financial stake in it. The amount that the states are bringing in is actually surprisingly small. So this year were likely to see about 100 billion of wagers being made. But that only translates into about 1 billion of tax revenue. Lets talk a little bit about the advertising. What has been your biggest worry . The gambling platforms, they are not trying to make money on you this year. Theyre trying to make money on you next year and ten years down the road and 20 years down the road, if they can be the app you put on your phone and the app that youre going to use, they hook you in. And for a long period of time. And of course, those who do you hook in for long periods of time, its the 18 year olds, its the 16 year olds, its the 21 year old, its the College Students or the folks that have potentially 50 years of gambling in front of them are you seeing an advertising like what specifically are they doing to target, say, young, late teens, early 20s College Students . Well, one thing theyve done is they have actually partnered with individual universities. They know that that College Students tend to be pretty big sports fans. And theres this illusion of control that happens with sports gambling. You think, oh, if only i was just a little smarter and a little better. And i tried a little harder, i could actually beat this system. And it takes a long time to understand. And the one rule above all others, and thats the rule that you cant beat the house. So what concerns do you have about addiction . Evidence suggests that somewhere between maybe one and 5 of people who engage in gambling, engage in gambling and unhealthy ways. And the fact that, again, everyone can put this on their phone significantly increases just that pool. And i think we all understand how addictive phones are. We understand how addictive tetris is or are or candy crush gambling is exactly the same way, except unlike pressing like on facebook or twitter. This actually costs you ten bucks or 50 bucks or 100. Is there something that can be done to to manage what sounds like youre predicting a very problematic scenario, especially for young people. I think that individual states who legalize sports gambling, its extremely important for them to really take problem gambling pretty seriously, where the sportsbooks make the most money is from those gamblers who bet the most. But of course, those gamblers who bet the most are those that are most likely to be problem gamblers in the first place. Very important that states again very seriously address the ideas here. Things like having easily accessible treatment programs. Those have opportunities for for gamblers to opt out of gambling and ways to monitor again, some of these very, very large gambling folks. Again, because those are exactly the customers that draftkings and fanduel and mgm all want. But those are also the ones that we as a society should probably be most concerned about. Professor Victor Matheson, so nice to talk to you. Thank you for your time. Well, thanks for having me. To matter of fact, when you look at the history of craftsmanship in the us, the stories of thousands of enslaved people who created tools and furniture and fabrics are often missing. A notable exception, though, is on display at the Smithsonian National museum of African American history. There you can see a four poster bed called the boyd bed. Its named after the furniture maker henry boyd and enslaved African American from kentucky. Boyd is among the black craftspeople whose work is now being celebrated. Our correspon spondent alexis clark shows us how a new generation of storytellers and teachers is reviving both the history and the techniques used centuries ago. When i see a piece of furniture, what crosses my mind is who is involved in it . Who cut the wood. Jerome biases victorian home in grand, North Carolina is filled with handcrafted pieces he made in his workshop. How did you become a furniture maker . Thats an interesting question. My fiancee and i were engaged and we needed a bed out shopping bias. Notice a substantial four poster bed and learned it was a replica of one created in the early 1800s by thomas day, a free black man and my mind was blown. Debris became one of the most successful furniture makers in North Carolina during a time when millions of black people were enslaved on plantations in the us, real comes all the way into. I was so inspired by seeing this black cab maker and seeing this beautiful piece of furniture bias whod gone to school for interior design, decided to make his own four poster bed, teaching himself the tools and techniques of his enslaved ancestors. Its not perfect. Its got flaws. Its got perfection in it at times, but its a whole mix of stuff in many ways. Its a symbol of a life. This is a whole workout. It is. Whitney miller is a journalist working in new orleans who loves crafting. A few years ago, she added woodworking to her skill set. I took a class to make a tool chest and i fell in love with it. It was fun. It was during this class that miller learned the story of henry boyd, who, like thomas day, also invented a bed. But the boyd bed became legendary. The owner of the workshop also owns a publishing company, and they publish niche books about woodworking. He asked miller to write about boyd. It was a dewy spring morning on a farm in carlisle, kentucky, when henry boyd was born in her illustrated childrens book, henry boyds freedom bed, miller tells boyds story from slavery to his move to cincinnati, where he created a bed frame with a special screw fastening system that he patented in 1833. During this time, he also made his house a secret stop on the underground railroad. And theres a lot of people that did a lot of great, wonderful, heroic things for our culture that we dont know about. And i think its so important for children to know about these heroes. Hello, skyler jones. Hello, big dog. Youre known as the dope teacher, of course. Evin jarritt teaches at philadelphias mayfair middle school. His passion is introducing children to the building trades. Why do you think its so important to teach such young kids these type of trades . I want to try to remove the stigma thats been put on the trades. So theres this history of African Americans in the trades. A lot of students dont know about that history and they dont see that represent station. Im trying to change the narrative and i think by being a black instructor and just the kids can actually see me in a lead role in here. Listen, just opens up many doors. Im just trying to open up doors for the students. My enslaved ancestors would have been would have made this for jerome. Bias representation is key to opening those doors. When i went to museums, i never saw us. So its important for me to be seen and to do this in a public way so i can inspire other folks to come join us. For a matter of fact, im alexis clark. High temperatures, were seeing a growing movement for self cooling homes and businesses. Its an effort to reduce our dependance on air conditioning and decrease our energy usage. One Pilot Project in houston replicates a centuries old construction method. Its a technique called passive design that relies on nature for climate control. Take a look. The building has scalloped shaped awnings and walls that look like corrugated cardboard. The deep vertical grooves push heat away from the surface. The engineers behind the project say the corrugations could stay 18 degrees cooler than the flat walls were used to. Phu hoang is cofounder of madhu. The Architecture Firm that designed the building. Its a multilayered approach. There are different elements. We have the self cooling walls. We have these vertical fins that provide shading, but we also integrate that with the landscape. And thats very important to the project, which is that its both architecture and landscape integrated together. Other similar projects are moving ahead in other states.
