This isnt a party, its a giant assisted living center. [ light laughter ] even worse, the reporter then asked about the upcoming g7 summit, and several people yelled bingo [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] an article published in the north korean state newspaper today called President Trump a psychopath, which means their official Foreign Policy towards north korea is now takes one to know one. [ light laughter ] according to a report, President Trump spent about 133,000 in taxpayer money on furnishing for the white house between january and may, compared to the 51,000 former president obama spent during same period. Though, to be fair, barack and michelle only needed the one bed. [ audience ohs ] so that was a huge saving. [ applause ] a New Hampshire restaurant recently created a 159foot, sixinchlong lobster roll which they hope will set a world record. Im sorry, hope will set a world record . If youre going to make a 160foot lobster roll, do your homework. [ light laughter ] bad news, guys. The record was 161, so i guess were going to toss this 40,000 sandwich into the garbage. Pete buttigieg is here. So excited to talk to him as well. Got a great show. So, before we get to all that, Senate Republicans finally unveiled a draft of their healthcare bill today after weeks of secret closeddoor meetings. And now, they want to rush it to the floor for a vote as early as next week. For more on this, its time for a closer look. [ cheers and applause ] seth as the gop tries to jumpstart its agenda in congress, President Trump seems to be feeling a little emboldened. Last night, he held a campaignstyle rally in iowa where he was about to repeat his infamous claim that hes done more in office since any president in history. This time he caught himself, sort of. Weve produced so much legis i dont think anybody president it could be somebody. I have to be a little careful, because theyll say, he lied. [ laughter ] so few president s, few, just have to be a little careful because theyll say, headline. Donald trump lies to the people of iowa. I dont want to seth you think it would be a headline if you lied . [ light laughter ] it would be a headline if you didnt. No matter what else was happening, that would be the biggest story in the country. Donald trump doesnt lie, also cancer cured, page 8. [ laughter and applause ] of course [ applause ] trump has actually signed none of the major legislation he promised in the first 100 days, let alone the first five months. One of those signature promises was of course the southern border wall, an idea trump seemed to revive last night with an interesting new twist. Were talking about the southern border, lots of sun, lots of heat. Were thinking about building the wall as a solar wall, so it creates energy. [ cheers and applause ] and pays for itself. Solar wall panels, beautiful. I mean actually think of it. The higher it goes, the more valuable it is, its like [ laughter and applause ] pretty good imagination, right . Good . My idea. [ light laughter ] seth good imagination, right . He sounds like your College Roommate who figured out how to get the roomba to bring him beers. [ light laughter ] but there was one moment in particular during trumps rally last night that was especially eyeopening, revealed a lot not, just about trumps priorities in general, but the healthcare policy in particular. The it came when trump explained why he appointed so many millionaires and billionaires to his cabinet. So somebody said, why did you appoint the rich person to be in charge of the economy . I said, because thats the kind of thinking we want. I mean, you know, really, because theyre representing the country. [ applause ] in those particular positions, i just dont want a poor person. Does that make sense . Seth yeah, what would a poor person know about economic problems . You cant understand the economy if youre bankrupt. You have to be bankrupt four times before you really get it. [ light laughter ] and that truly seems to be the operating ethos of the trump era, a president who campaigned on populist rhetoric but whose policy would cause needless suffering for low and middleincome people. And theres no better example ever that than trump care. The gop finally unveiled a draft of their healthcare bill today after weeks of secretive closeddoor meetings. Remember, the house bill slashed medicaid, which millions of lowincome people rely on to fund giant tax cuts for the rich. And somehow, the senate made the house bill even worse. Senate republicans finally unveiling their draft unveiled to deliver on their longheld promise to repeal and replace obamacare. The proposal largely mirrors the house bill, including deep cuts to medicaid, big tax credits for the wealthy. The Congressional Budget Office said the house bill would cut 834 million from medicaid. The senate bill makes even deeper cuts. If the house bill was mean, the senate bill seems to be very cruel. Seth now there are some republican who is claim at least that they are against throwing people off medicaid like this. So what happened to those republicans . Well they didnt even know what was in the bill until it was revealed today because Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell was basically writing it by himself behind closed doors, and nobody is ever doing anything good behind closed doors. If your teenaged son was locked in his bedroom this long, you wouldnt say, hey, buddy are you doing extra credit homework in there . [ light laughter ] in fact, the process for writing this bill was so secretive, that even the people supposed to be writing it had no idea what was in it. When the senate first started writing the bill, they announced a working group of 13 senators that included people like Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell, texas senator ted cruz, and utah senator mike lee. Now given that he was supposed to be one of the people writing the bill, lee naturally got lots of calls from constituents asking him, whats in the bill youre writing . And on tuesday, lee responded to the calls with a stunning admission. Weve gotten a lot of calls in the last few days from people throughout utah and across america, expressing concerns in one way or another about the healthcare bill. Ive had a lot of people ask me specifically when the healthcare bill is going to be released to the public, why it isnt public. The short answer to the question is i havent seen it yet, either. Seth wait. Youre supposed to be writing it, and you havent seen it . Thats like your doctor saying, i think the liver transplant was successful, but i dont know. I was at the movies. [ light laughter ] now several republican senators have at least feigned concern over the secretive process, but they dont seem to be doing much about it like arizona senator john mccain who was asked this week if he had seen the bill and got super sassy. I havent seen it. Is that a problem . Oh, no. Never a problem, no, of course not. I always like to move forward with legislation that i havent seen. Thats one of the practices ive enjoyed around here. Did you get any more clarification today, sir . We had lots of conversations. Every lunch we have conversations. We have more and more conversations. Its wonderful the conversations we have. [ light laughter ] seth that, of course, is a direct quote from john mccains book, oh, the conversations we have. [ light laughter ] also, nothing beats old man sarcasm. Oh, im so happy were all on our phones during thanksgiving dinner. [ light laughter ] i hate for someone to miss a chat snap while grandpas telling a story about prohibition [ light laughter ] but sarcastic remarks are not going to accomplish anything. If youre genuinely appalled by the bill and the process used to write it, then you need to do something about it, because so far, the man who is running things, Mitch Mcconnell is moving full speed ahead with a plan to vote on the healthcare bill, which was written behind closed doors with no public input one week after unveiling it. In fact, during the floor debate, Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer tried to get mcconnell to promise that he would at least allow a paltry 10 hours to debate and amend the bill before its voted on, and mcconnell wouldnt even promise that. Will it be available to us and the public more than 10 hours before we have to vote for it . Since our leader has said, our republican leader, that there will be plenty of time for a process where people can make amendments. You need time to prepare those amendments. I think well have ample opportunity to read and amend the bill. Will it be more than 10 hours, mr. Mcconnell . I think well have opportunity to read and amend the bill. Seth i think well have ample opportunity to read and amend the bill is the longest euphemism ive ever heard for, go [ bleep ] yourself. [ light laughter ] you cant even guarantee 10 hours of debate . It takes longer to debate a healthcare bill than it takes to bingewatch a season of empire. [ light laughter ] and to paraphrase empire, republicans, if you want cookies nookie, ditch the mitch. [ light laughter ] this is a dramatic break from how the legislative process is supposed to work. Of course, when democrats worked to pass obamacare in 20092010, it was a much more normal process, with over 100 hearings and months of debate. Todays process is far worse, and yet youll never guess how much of what mcconnell is totally cool with today, he complained about back then. The bill were being asked to consider was assembled behind closed doors, out of sight, without input from the public. Nobody has seen it other than the handful of democrats who were in the Conference Room and the majority leader, writing this thing in secret. The administration doesnt want to hear criticism because it doesnt want people to know what its proposals will actually do. This is an incredibly unpopular bill. Thus, their only rallying cry, make history. Ignore the american people. What an act of arrogance. Theyre doing everything they can to jam this bill through, and they dont even seem to care any more about how ugly it all looks. After all, common sense dictates that any Time Congress rushes, congress stumbles. Seth thats right. When congress rushes, it stumbles. And if thats the case, then the gop congress is currently this guy. [ light laughter ] seth you can laugh. You can laugh, but trump just appointed that guy secretary of shovels. [ light laughter ] now republicans can hate obamacare, but they cannot argue that it was a far more open, transparent, and inclusive than the process the republicans are using now. In fact, president obama even held healthcare summits at the white house. Where he invited republicans to essentially come and complain about the bill to his face for hours on television. Mcconnell, himself, was there. In fact, not only was he there, mcconnell, the man who wouldnt even tell people what was in the bill he was writing, complained at the time that republicans werent given as much time to speak as democrats, prompting a snappy retort from president obama. [ talking over each other ] may i inject one quick point here, very quick in terms of trying to keep everything fair, which i know you want to do. To this point, the republicans have had 24 minutes, the democrats 52 minutes. Lets try to have as much balance as we can. Youre right. There was an imbalance on the Opening Statements because im the president. [ laughter ] seth oh, snap, mitch [ cheers and applause ] just look. We have actual footage on how the gallery reacted to that comment. [ cheers ] in fact, while were talking about healthcare, mitch, you might need some ointment, because thats a thirddegree burn. [ light laughter ] what were seeing right now is a breathtakingly cynical process to produce a breathtakingly cruel bill. And not only that, it breaks so many of trumps promises to voters. The bill allows states to waive out of providing essential benefits like Maternity Care and prescription drugs. And it slashes medicaid subsidies for low and middleincome people, which would not only take Health Insurance away from millions but would also result in higherdeductible plans that cover fewer Health Benefits and cost people more. Which, of course, is somewhat surprising, given that trump said all of this on the campaign trail. Im not going to cut Social Security like every other republican. Mmhmm. And im not going to cut medicare or medicaid. Universal healthcare . I am going to take care of everybody. I dont care if it costs me votes or not. Everybody is going to be taken care of much better than theyre taken care of now. Youre going to have such great healthcare at a tiny fraction of the cost. Seth wow. I wonder what people will say now that the gop plans to break all of his promises . Theyll say, he lied. [ light laughter ] seth yeah, that sounds right. This has been a closer look. [ cheers and applause ] well be right back with ice cube, everybody [ cheers and applause ] isnt this fun, living like the pioneers of olden times . I hate the outside. Well, i hate it wherever you are. Burn. Burn. Is that what the kids are saying now . Im so bored, im dead. You can always compare rates on progressive. Com. Oh, thats nice, dear. Cause we got we got donnie wahlberg, the biggest celtic fan in the world so we need we need to counter. And im like, youve come to the right place. [ light laughter ] you know what i mean . Dont nobody hate the celtics like your boy ice cube, so seth oh, so interesting, so you were not pulled to it out of a of the lakers, you were pulled to it out of a hatred for the celtics . [ light laughter ] yes, without a doubt, you know, it was like when i was young, man they made me cry. Its like i was, they beat us in 84 and i was just so pissed, man. Seth yeah. So to be able to get some revenge . Seth yeah. You know what i mean . I had to do it. Seth did you did you have a least favorite celtic . Was there one that particularly enraged you . Aw, man, something something about that kevin mchale. Seth yeah. Kevin mchale and danny ainge, man. They just man, the brat in the blue. Seth yeah, thats i think a lot of people in l. A. Probably feel that way about them. Nba draft will be tonight. Yep. Seth lakers have the number two pick. Do you have a dream pick for them . I mean my dream pick would be magic johnson, but he cant play no more, so i take lonzo ball. Seth lonzo ball . Yeah, yeah. Seth now lonzo ball, of course a lot of attention is being paid to lonzo bells father who is a very colorful character. Do you think he will fit in in l. A. . The ball family . Of course. Of course man, you know, the lakers arent too good right now, so we need some entertainment. Seth yeah. You know what i mean . Lavar be a lot of entertainment for us, you know what i mean, so i think its going to be cool. Seth so, you were here your Basketball League. You started a Basketball League called big3. Big3. I i just turned 27. [ light laughter ] so yeah, its been its been a while, man, you know. Thats very controversial record. And i believe it deserved a rerelease. Seth and i would argue that it would be just as controversial today, dont you think . Man that record just brutal right there, i mean it i dont give nobody no break, you know. Seth yeah. If you black, you get it. If youre white, you get it. If you fat, skinny, ugly, you know. So you know, just a record that im im just really, i mean its 1991. We in the heat, we you know its the rodney king stuff going on. So thats a fiery record. Seth is it weird to you, to i mean cause you think of, i mean its weird for me because i was i was very young when this album came out. I listened to it a lot. Its so strange to me now that this is a classic album. Yeah, man. Seth its like my dad or my grandmother being like, oh, glenn miller was fantastic. And now its like me talking about ice cube, like [ light laughter ] yeah, yeah, you know, its kind of kind of weird to be to be associated with glenn miller. [ light laughter ] seth its time, its time. Yeah. Seth did you find have you found that due to straight outta compton, that a new generation of people are finding your music . Yeah, thats whats cool. You know, a lot of lot of kids, you know, just now me for are we there yet . You know what im saying . They just thought i did movies. So, i see kids now they be like, they used to come want to shake my hand and now theyre like, oh, wait a minute. Hold on. Hold on, buddy. So, its kind of cool that that, you know, with a movie like that you can educate. You can, you know, show people that, you know, im more than just, you know, movies. That, you know, i did music at one point. Seth yeah. Did you, is it true that you that you sort of were somebody who carried around notebooks when you were writing lyrics . Oh, yeah. Yeah. Seth and you saved them all . Yeah i got i got pretty much all my notebooks, my archives. Seth your archives thats good, one day there will be an ice cube library somewhere i hope. Yeah, yeah. Seth do do people do you ever look through them . Are you ever surprised at what you were thinking about back then or is it still fresh in your memory . Yeah, yeah, you know, i go back and look through, you know, i mean its a trip looking through the old n. W. A. , you know, page and, you know, looking at all the notes i had, you know. I had a note in there one day, i was like, mom, im going with dre to Magic Mountain, if anybody calls, dont tell them where i am. You know, it was like that i never gave to her, you know what im saying . So, it its a trip just going back and looking through all those old books. Seth its a trip every time i listen to n. W. A. , i never once thought, i bet cube and dre are on their way to Magic Mountain right now. I know, exactly. [ light laughter ] it was a trip. We used to go there and have fun we start making money, we stayed up there, man. [ light laughter ] seth this of course has a one of the great diss tracks of all time, no vaseline. Yeah, yeah. Seth was that i i dont have a memory of it. Was that a thing that was a a diss tracks i feel like became a thing. Was that early era of that . Or was that already happening a lot . What was going on, you know, it started way back, you know, when hip hop first started. You know, its some famous, you know, battles, you know, they go back in the day, l. L. And kool moe dee had one. I think thats one that went to big heights. But so theres always been this and, you know, me and n. W. A. Got into it and, you know, i had to let them know. [ light laughter ] seth well, thats very nice. Obviously, you guys worked through it in the end and yeah, we cool its hard to listen to those songs now cause cause we cool, you know, i love dre and ren and eazy and yella seth yeah. You know, theyre my guys. Seth its funny that you basically you recorded you made a record of a fight and now you have to listen to it yeah and now i have to listen to it. Seth it would be like if every time my wife and i had a fight i said, were going to record this. And then well listen to it later. Oh, yeah, yeah, that aint good. That aint good. [ light laughter ] seth that is not a good idea. That aint good. Seth congrats on this. Thank you. Seth cant wait to watch big3 this summer and always great to see you. Thank you so much. Yeah. Seth please welcome back to the show, Kumail Nanjiani, everybody [ cheers and applause ] seth so happy to have you back. Dude, thanks for having me, very excited to be back. Seth congratulations on the movie. This is a really funny movie. Its also very sweet, its emotional. You wrote it with your wife and its basically the story about how you guys met. She heckled you at a comedy club. Is that true . Thats correct. Yeah. Seth and then, your families, you have very different families but also she your wife was in a coma. And this story is about that. Was it weird for you guys to write obviously its incredibly personal story about a very difficult time . Yeah, it was weird, because the movie is a comedy. Seth its super funny. She is fine, shes backstage. Shes doing great. Shes thriving. Shes shes just [ laughter ] seth the coma was good for her. Yeah, she knows a couple more languages now. She can juggle. It was a weird coma. [ light laughter ] shes totally fine. And it is a comedy. But its weird because you start writing it and youre like, i just want to we just want to write really good movies based on our lives, we want to do a good job, make a good movie. But then everyone sees it and its very personal and they all like kind of want to have a moment with you. Like they want they want more personal stuff. Like, they be like, so how is your relationship with your parents now, huh . Whats going on now . What makes you cry . Give me a piece of your heart its like, its okay. Calm down. Seth is it i mean every time you make a piece of art, you get feedback and its difficult sometimes to take. But when you is it even harder when its about your life and you do play someone named kumail. So its not yeah. Seth yeah. Yeah. Some of the, the preparation wasnt that difficult. [ light laughter ] but we did do this thing, so what you do is, when youre working on the movie while its still kind of rough, you test it, so you sort of get a crowd of like pretty random people and you show them the movie and then you give them forms and they tell you what they think of it. And mostly it was good. But i remember one form, the first line was, i dont think people from different races should date. And we were like, maybe we dont need to read the rest of this one. But i love that that person stayed until the end of the movie like maybe theres going to be a twist. [ laughter ] we might like at the end like i toss a quarter into a well and turn white and theyre like all right this is good. What was even worse, seth, that one was bad. What was even worse, was one person was like, i dont believe this guy can get a girl. [ laughter ] because the first one is about that persons ignorance. The second comment is just an assessment of me. [ laughter ] like the first one is about them, but this one is definitely about me. I was like, that sucks. I can get a girl. Seth well you have to play yourself. Your family is played by actors. And the guy who plays your father is fantastic. And hes a big bollywood star, is that correct . Yeah, his names anupan kher. It was his 500th film. Seth oh my god. And was your dad excited to be played by him . My dad was so, so thrilled. Id asked my dad, like, who do you want to play you . And he said, anupan kher. And i was like, it would be like if you asked your dad if you asked your dad and he was like, rock hudson. [ laughter ] its just as likely. Seth right. But we got, yeah, we got him and he was really fantastic. And seth was your dad a funny guy . Were you guys close growing up . Yeah, yeah. Were still close. He was very funny he would play pranks on me a lot. Not on my brother, just on me. He would do this thing, where he would tell me hes like, you know every time you go to bed at night, i dont want to scare you, but under your bed, ginns have a tee party. Ginns are like genies but like scarier. And hes like, but as long as you look down there youll be fine. He would also do this thing, hed on his hes would record on audio tape. He would record himself going like ooooooo. Aaaaaaa. Then he would like put it in a boom box and hide it in the house. [ laughter ] and then it would start happening and you would look at me and he would be like, everyone who lives in the house is here. Who could that be . And then it would be like, kumail [ laughter ] im going to eat you and then he would be like, did you hear that . [ laughter ] thats terrible news. He was like, youre going to have to move. [ laughter ] and im like, where are we going to move to . And he was like, no, he said hes going to eat you. [ laughter ] we just got done paying off the house. Yeah, it was it kept me on my toes. Seth i want to ask about this, because ive never heard of this before. Your wife took you to a gentle barn. Is this true . Yes, so the gentle barn is this place in california. By l. A. And what they do is they its weird that i was smiling because when you hear the next thing its going to make me sound like a real serial killer. They take abused animals they take abused animals from like other places and they bring them to the gentle barn and youre supposed to pay money to go in and like hug and kiss all the animals. Yeah. Its really stupid. [ laughter ] but my wife you know, she really wanted to go and you know, im a great guy and you know [ laughter ] so you pay money. So i pay money, i go in and all the animals like have a name. Which is not surprising. But what was surprising every animal has a poster, theres a poster that details like the back story of how the animals got there. Like their origin yeah, it would be like this cow escaped from a veal cage. Or like this pig went blind from malnutrition. Or like this horse was framed for the murder of a white woman. You know like [ laughter ] it was really awful stuff. So im like all right. Im not going to cry, im okay. Ill be fine. Im a man, i dont cry. Then we went into the goat area. Thats where they keep the thats where they keep the goats. [ laughter ] seth yeah, that sounds sounds right. Back story on me when i was a little kid, i was attacked by a goat. [ laughter ] i could tell you the story. But no explanation is going to lead you to having a less stereotypical understanding of pakistan. Seth okay. [ laughter ] so were going to skip that, okay . So i go in, by the way, have you ever heard what a goat sounds like . Seth yes. Ahh thats a goat. Ahh on its best day. Ahh like an old man who tasted hot soup. Ahh [ laughter ] i dont know how to use ipads so i go in, and this goat looks at me like we meet again, you know. But it says on its thing on the poster it says, this goat likes to be tickled under its chin. So i walk up to this stupid little goat, and i tickle him under its stupid little chin. And he like closed his eyes. As if to say, i thought the world was a bad place. But now i understand love. Oh, my god. Im going back there. These animals became so humanized to me. On the way out this is true. On the way out, a horse sneezed and i said bless you to it. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] i was like and you know, it got all upitty, because as you know all horses are atheist and very selfrighteous about it. Theyre like, the burden of proof is on you. And im like, shut up, horse. [ laughter ] seth this is amazing, youre this film, comes out on your 10th anniversary, you and emily. Yeah. Seth congratulations, what a nice piece of fait that is. Yeah, july 14th is our 10th anniversary. And thats when it goes why it just seems like the most selfserving thing to do. Like on our anniversary were going to see the movie we made of our love. [ laughter ] look how big it is. Everyone see it is on the big screen. Its like just make dinner and stay at home. You know. Seth i dont know, i think you guys deserve it. Congrats on an incredible film to both of you. Thank you. Seth its so great to see you again. Thank you, seth. Seth Kumail Nanjiani, everybody. The big sick is in select theaters friday and nationwide, july 14th. Well be right back with mayor pete buttigieg. [ cheers and applause ] when i look in the mirror everyday. When i look in the mirror everyday. Everyday, i think how fortunate i am. I think is today going to be the day, that we find a cure . I think how much i can do to help change peoples lives. I may not benefit from those breakthroughs, but im sure going to. Im bringing forward a treatment for alzheimers disease, yes, in my lifetime, i will make sure. New degree ultraclearnt saving black white. Othes. No yellow stains on white clothes. No white marks on black clothes. New degree ultraclear black white. It wont let you down. How far would you go for coffee thats a cup above . I brought you nespresso. Nespresso. What else . [ cheers and applause ] seth our next guest is the mayor of south bend, indiana. And a rising star in the Democratic Party. Please welcome to the show, mayor pete buttigieg. [ cheers and applause ] seth how are you . Im good, thanks. Seth this is the first time weve had a mayor from weve had the mayor of new york on the show. But this is our first outside mayor. Well, im honored. Seth thank you. So for those who dont know your background. Its pretty incredible. You you are a progressive democrat in a red state. Yepp. Seth you were a rhodes scholar, you served in afghanistan and now youre in your second term as mayor of south bend, indiana. Yeah, its the best job in the world. I mean, being mayor of your hometown and having a chance to shape a place you grew up in, its awesome. So im in my sixth year and im loving it. Seth people are very hard on congress, it has a very low Approval Rating no matter what party youre in. It seems like being a mayor would have its advantages and disadvantages. One though, is you actually get to govern youre not tied into a larger body. Is that how you feel being a mayor is . Yeah, i mean, every day as a mayor youve got to deliver results, right . And the nice thing about it is youre never youre never in a factfree environment. Its not like proving you werent born in kenya. Like either you you plowed the snow and people can tell or you failed to do that and people can tell. Seth right. So it creates a lot of pressure. But its really healthy too, because youre living in the same reality, i mean, you are a resident, right . So youre living in the same reality as all your other residents. And you know, youre accountable for real things. Seth and you mentioned that its your home town. You obviously seem to be a fairly affable person. Indiana is full of very kind people. Yeah. Seth does that mean, though, that you get approached 24 7 . Oh yeah, i mean, youre always mayor, right . So and i try to remember that any time i encounter a resident, thats my boss, right . So they have a right to come up to me and talk about even if im at the grocery and like i just need to get some toilet paper and beer and get out of there, right . Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] no but they want to talk, right . Theres an issue with right now i got a whole bunch of emails about trash pickup. cause we had to change the where you take your bins to get picked up and that affects people and their lives. Im genuinely fine with it. I do have a rule about that gym. My rule like if im shaving and you know, after a workout and somebody wants to talk about like the streetscape improvements that are going on. I figure, if im not wearing pants, i shouldnt have to talk about work. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] i just think thats fair rule. Seth yeah, yeah. We can talk about work after. Seth right. I just hope that you dont get ever so discouraged that you just stop wearing pants all the time so you never have to [ laughter ] dont let it get that way. So it seems like so often democrats in recent years, they dont want to get framed as being far left or too progressive so they move to the center. It doesnt seem to be a process that works particularly well. Do you have a rule about your progressive politics and how whether you try to hide them or not . Yeah, i think thats kind of the wrong framework. We spend a lot of time appealing to republicans, independents and getting through to them. But its the path to doing that isnt always ideological centrism. I think the path to doing that is showing results, i find you know, if you lead with your values and you explain why you believe what you believe, why youre doing what youre doing. Even people who have somewhat different values will give you some credit for that. And they appreciate that at least theyre dealing with somebody who knows why hes there. Seth yeah. So theres but they believe that theres an integrity to your beliefs. I think so, yeah. And youre not going to win everybody over and thats okay, too. Seth you youve talked about how the Republican Party has sort of coopted the word freedom and that they are the party of freedom. And the importance of democrats taking back the word freedom. Can you talk about that a little bit. Yeah man, i think conservatives and libertarians miss something really important about freedom, which is that, you know government is not the only thing that can make us unfree. To me the Democratic Party has always been about protecting ordinary people. And you know, at least in my personal life. Im definitely more free because of progressive leadership and progressive decisions. You know i wouldnt even have the freedom to marry if it werent for, you know elected democrats. Leading that charge. But just think about freedoms that mean the most in your life. I mean, i think a lot more people are worried about freedom in the sense of like being able to choose a career without being too bogged down in medical debt or student debt that stops you from, you know, following your dreams. Versus like the freedom to get around some kind of obscure financial regulation, which seems to be the kind of freedom that interests republicans more and i think thats part of how you know theyve really veered away from protecting the freedoms that affect most of us, most often in our everyday lives. Seth you talk about your own freedom to marry. So you you came out before you were mayor, but it was before your reelection campaign. Yeah, i was mayor, but we were up for reelection and i was just ready. I was kind of done not being out and so we didnt know what would happen. Its indiana, its a conservative place. But it turned out most people, i mean there was a little bit of ugliness online and that sort of thing, but most people were either very supportive or they didnt care. That was great. Seth is it that they dont care, because ultimately, back to what you were saying earlier, that if they care about trash can pickup, they dont ultimately care about your personal life . Yeah, i mean, the lady writing the emails right now saying, look its inconvenienced me that you feel you had to have the trash bin go to the front of the house, instead of the back. Right . Shes not going to be like, p. S. , youre gay and im mad at you. [ laughter ] right, like i think all of our politics needs to be like a little more rooted in like what its doing in peoples lives, thats why the health care stuff mattered so much, right . Its not like an obscure policy thing. Its like what is going to happen in my life because of these decisions. Seth speaking of health care, do you think its a mistake . Certainly the stuff that we get caught up this show, we get caught up because it is like a drama that unfolds every week. Is it a mistake for the Democratic Party to focus on russia instead of Something Like health care that will affect a lot more voters than whatever the outcome is of this russia investigation . Yeah. Look, dont get me wrong. The russia stuff matters, obviously. But, weve got to make sure were talking about you know, most of the people who cross my path every day in south bend, indiana, they may not know or care who jim comey is, but theyre going to know if their Health Care Gets taken away. This is literally lifeanddeath stuff. And so i think we need to communicate about that more. I think it makes for better policy. I think it makes for better politics. Im actually working to launch a pac that we are going to call hitting home. And the idea is that you know, we need to be talking more about the way these policies things, this show in washington, actually hits home for regular people. The show is mesmerizing, i get it. I get locked into it too when you got the 24 7 stuff. But there are people in our communities right now, whose lives are at stake in the health care debate. And a whole bunch of other things that that are barely getting talked about. Because all we can look at is you know, the latest tweet or whatever craziness is going on in that kind of echo chamber on capitol hill. Seth so you actually went to afghanistan while you were mayor, yes . Yes, so im a reservist. And you know, when youre a reservist, and you get called up, you got to drop your day job. Everybody is leaving behind something important. I was leaving behind the mayors office, so i a took a leave of absence for seven months and went to serve, i was with a great unit seth whenever you see tv shows about sort of the military or movies, everybody has cool nicknames, was your nickname the mayor is that what guys in the unit called you . [ laughter ] so i really did my best to not have them figure out what my day job you can imagine how much you will people in the military are already good at making fun of each other. You can imagine if they figured out. Of course, i was with an intelligence unit, they had google so they figured out what the new guy did for a living. Seth right. Although, i got to the end of my deployment, my roommate never knew that i had a day job. But yeah, they did start calling me, the mayor. Seth okay good about that. I would be very disappointed if they called you something else. Thats too good a nickname. Like, hey mayor, get over here. Yeah, or they go or theyd go with, the honorable lieutenant. Seth oh, there you go. Thats pretty good too. Hey, thank you very much for being here. I really appreciate your time and keep up the good work. Thanks for having me.
