At his Year End Press conference on friday president obama said the democrats lost the election because they are quote characterized as coastalliberal, latte sipping, politically correct out of touch folks. He then literally took a sip of a latte. [ laughter ] level 10 trolling right there. President obama recently said he and donald trump most likely have different definitions of Political Correctness and just as likely different spellings. [ laughter ] i would like to get another r in there and i love a c. So give me a couple of cs. John mccain criticized president obama yesterday and said he had no strategy and no policy on dealing with russias recent hackings. Oh, he has a strategy, all right. Its called running out the clock. [ light laughter ] now let me see i guess that would be your problem. [ cheers and applause ] china last week china last week seized a u. S. Navy drone submarine from International Waters in the south china sea, which was a real bummer for the guy operating it. [ laughter ] i got bad news. I got bad news, barak. I took out the drone. I know you told me not to but the chinese got it. Oh, thats all right. Thats their problem. The Chinese Government said this weekend that it will return the u. S. Naval drone submarine that it captured last week. Its how they told us that is surprising. [ laughter ] in bed. Nursing home facilities have reportedly been using robotic therapy cats to sooth their residents. Said nursing home residents, screw that, i want weed. Robot cat, this is terrifying. [ laughter ] and finally the price of gold increased today after falling to its lowest level in almost a year which can only mean one thing. Trump is remodeling his bathroom. Before we get to all that, theres been a lot of talk about the threat donald trump poses to democratic norms but its not just trump, as we found out last week from a political crisis in North Carolina, where republicans sought to strip power away from the Incoming Democratic governor before he takes office. For more on this its time for a closer look. [ cheers and applause ] seth the Electoral College voted today and confirmed that donald trump will be our next president and good for him. The voters spoke and he won fair and red square. Now [ laughter ] of course, more voters chose Hillary Clinton by about 3 million votes, but unfortunately for her, our election rules are more complicated than a game of quidditch. Sure, she got more points but trump got the golden snitch. [ laughter ] but still, by the rules of our electoral system, donald trump won and our democracy depends on accepting the legitimacy of our opponents and the votes of people who disagree with us. Which is why what happened last week in North Carolina is so troubling. It is being called a legislative coo in North Carolina. The gop controlled Legislature Making a brazen push to sharply reduce the power of the new governor, democrat roy cooper, before he even takes office. What the republican led simply and legislature is trying to do is pass some bills and laws to actually curtail the Incoming Democratic governors powers. Its one thing to lose a close race and be bitter about it. Its an entirely different one to try to jam through changes to strip away your opponents powers. Seth so, republicans lost and now gop legislators are stripping power away from the democratic governor before he takes office. Thats like losing a bet and paying with monopoly money. 500. Just like we said. Sorry its tiny and orange. [ laughter ] for example, four years ago when republican became governor the legislature expanded the number of appointments the governor gets to make, from 500 to 1500. Now that a democrat is taking over, the legislatures has suddenly decided to cut that number from 1500 to 425. And then theres this, in North Carolina the Governors Party controls state and county election boards. But they gop changed the rules to allow democrats to chair the state board of elections in odd numbered years and allowed a republican to chair the board in even numbered years. Why did they give democrats odd numbered years . Because in odd number years, there are no elections its like winning yankee season tickets for all games between november and march. Now it should be noted that one of the reasons the republicans even have the massive majority in the state legislature they needed to pass these laws in the first place, is that as a Court Earlier ruled many of our districts are racially jury mannered and unconstitutional. Basically, they drew some districts to group together as many African American voters as possible to dilute their political power. Take a look at North Carolinas congressional map. Now take a look at district 12. Its so weirdly shaped they cant even fit the 12 in it. [ laughter ] it looks like a rorschach test. What do you see in this shape . I dont know, its either a dragon of 300 years of institutional racism. [ laughter ] so needless so say, the republican power grab prompted protests at the state capital. With protestors knocking on the doors of the Senate Chamber demanding to be heard. Police even going to far as to arrest santa claus. I asked you to leave the building. I understand. Okay. This is my building. Alright sir, follow this officer please. Theyre arresting santa claus. Santa seth they arrested santa claus. Though to be fair he is wanted on like 8 billion counts for breaking and entering. [ laughter ] some republican lawmakers lashed out of protest despite the fact that they were peaceful. In fact, the protestors were so peaceful that one of them tried inviting a Police Officer over to her house. How are you doing . Im good. How are you today . Good. Im glad. I want you to come for christmas dinner at our house. Thank you, maam. I do need you to leave the third floor right now though. I know you do, but you know i cant. Okay. Let me tell you if you dont leave ill have to arrest you for Second Degree trespassing. I understand. Im good with that. Youre good with that . Okay, ill give you one more chance. Will you please leave . Nah. I need you stand up. Im going to arrest you for Second Degree trespassing. Seth that is the most polite policeprotester interaction i have ever seen. Instead of handcuffs he locked her up in friendship bracelets. [ laughter ] the executive director at the North Carolina republican party, Dallas Woodhouse, defended the new laws by listing all of the other things the Incoming Democratic governor roy cooper will still be able to do once he is in office. Roy cooper still going to be the governor. He still gets the keys to the mansion at some point on january 1st. He still gets to use the big ball room. Seth so he cant do anything but he gets a mansion and a ballroom. Does he also get a typewriter so he can work on his novel . [ laughter ] he also argued in multiple interviews last week that it was okay for republicans to do this because democrats tried similar, though much less triconian measures in the past. And said anyone that thinks republicans wouldnt try to strip the incoming governor of his powers is just being naive. Do you think it was wrong what the democrats did, then . Chuck, i think wrong is always in the eye of the beholder of whos ox is getting gored. That is the way its always been in these things. So what youre saying, in this case two wrongs make a right . What i would say is that legislatures overtime on both sides of the aisle have deemed that they loath executive power but theyll give a little more to their guy but when the other side gets in theyll scale it back. Hey, guess what chuck, next thing you know youll say theyre gambling in casa blanca. I mean, come on. Seth did you have playing cards ready during the entire interview . Was he holding them the hold time . Youre not allowed to have props. Are you the carrot top of politicians . This was in no way a naked power grab. A naked, power, grab. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] now just to give you an idea of how deeply divided North Carolina is, politically, that guy Dallas Woodhouse has a brother, brad, whos a democratic operative in North Carolina. They famously went on cspan together in 2014 and a caller asked them to put aside their political differences. This is steves show, dallas. Raleigh, North Carolina. Hey, somebody from down south. Youre right im from down south. Oh, god, its mom. And im your mother and i disagree that all families are like ours. I dont know many families that are fighting at thanksgiving. Is this really your mother . Yeah, its our mom. I was very glad that this thanksgiving was a year that you two were supposed to go to your inlaws and im hoping youll have some of this out of your system when you come here for christmas. Seth i guess shes still upset about the time her son dallas gerrymandered the turkey. [ laughter ] i think its fair to say that like the woodhouse boys, mom were all hoping for a peaceful christmas and this is the time of the year when we take stock of all the things we take for granted. Things like living in a stable healthy democracy. But democracy isnt something that succeeds on its own. If its going to survive we have to fight for it. Seth no, but shes yeah, uh seth do you ever are you running out of things to talk about, or are you happy to still be no, its a kind of wonderful thing because in the beginning when i was starting to work on it, people had so many negative opinions about her. Seth yeah. And i would try to convince them otherwise that she was a sort of formidable, great lady and had an enormous heart. And they were like, yeah, yeah. She got the bad hair, the bad skirts. She lost. You know. Seth yeah. And now theres been a lovely narrative shift, and people have a lot of feeling and good will towards her. And i feel very proud to be associated with that, so seth she is wonderful. She was here. We had her as a guest. You had her on . Seth yeah, it was fantastic oh, wow. Seth to talk to her. And again, i think its so strange to have somebody that my opinion of her has completely shifted because of this Television Show. Yeah. Seth but is it true that you have never watched it nope. Seth because it would be too sad . I think it sounds really actressy and crazy, but i think i thought somehow we were going to change the outcome of the verdict. Seth uhhuh. Sure. [ laughter ] because, you know, we were up there. And a lot of our dialogue in the courtroom was actually lifted, certainly the big moments the, you know seth mmhmm. Closing arguments, opening arguments, all that stuff that certain witnesses that were famously on the stand. So, we had actual dialogue listed from the transcripts. And so, were up there, a lot of times, wearing the exact things that they were wearing. Seth sure. And we just felt like if we just pitched it in a particular way, it might have it was a sort of fantastical idea. But sterling, who played darden, we also both felt that hes watched it, though, and i have not. Seth was it then, the day you filmed the verdict, was that the hardest day . That was a hard day. Seth yeah. Yeah, it was a hard day, and i think it would be very, very hard for me to watch because i dont want to watch her lose. Seth right. Now, this is ryan murphy, who youve worked with on American Horror story. Yes. Seth on many seasons of that yeah, six now. Seth six of that. Yeah. Seth and this art do people ever ask you, do you get tired of working with him . Yeah. I think they think, you know, dont i want to spread my wings and fly . As they say, but i have gotten to play a twoheaded lady, a blind witch, a heroin addict, and marcia clark in all in, like, four or five years. Seth yeah. Seth this is the fullfemale cast heist movie yes. Seth that is happening, filming right now in new york yeah. Seth and, but, its a starstudded cast. Youve got weve got anne hathaway. Weve got kate blanchett. We have mindy. Weve got Sandy Bullock. Weve got Helena Bonham carter, awkwafina, and rihanna, who is not famous at all. Seth no. No. [ laughter ] thats sort of vague. Seth mindy was saying rihanna is the one that draws the most. Yeah, you cant if youre standing next to her and paparazzi are taking a picture, like, wow, i think theyre going yeah, yeah. Really, its because rihanna is standing next to you. Seth yeah. Theyre not interested in you at all. Yeah, we had a kind of funny its been a really its i know people want there to be some kind of crazy drama going on between all the women because how could so many women be in a room and actually get along . [ light laughter ] its like they totally the people are so depressed. Theyre like, oh, you, you what is it like . Im like, theyre great. Oh, theyre great . Yeah, theyre great . Really . They look so depressed. But, we had this, like, one moment where all of us sitting around and someone mentioned that there was a big online sale, and everyone, like, whipped out their phones. And we were all trying to look at things. And i found, like, a couple of things. And i was showing it. Rihanna next to me, and i was like, what do you think of that . And she was like, yeah, yeah. And then, i showed her a pair of pants i thought were the most hideous pants i have ever seen, and she was like, i think those are so cool. And i was like, me too. [ laughter ] i think those are so cool. Because theres no one i mean, rihanna is the definition seth rihanna decides everything. Yeah, and theres a picture in the definition of cool, and its like, theres rihanna just like seth and you came into this as a rihanna fan. Yeah. Every time i look at her, im like work work work work work [ laughter ] seth has she ever heard you . No, but a couple of times i have gotten, like, Sandy Bullock gave me the side eye, like [ laughter ] seth you were im like diamonds oh, sorry. Like, its just every time i see her it just starts. Seth and have i heard there were a few occasions where they tried to do odd things to make you feel comfortable. On a certain airline, which is united seth yeah. [ laughter ] they sometimes leave channel nine open to listen to air Traffic Control seth i remember, yeah. Which i quite like. Most people think, why would you want to know that . But to me, i like knowing the lay of the land and that there are a hundred planes in the air, and everybody talking to everybody. But the pilot started whispering my name, like every four so he would be like, this is united 449. [ whispering ] sarah. [ laughter ] i was like and i think he thought that it was going to make me feel relaxed, like, you know, hes making contact with me. And instead i just thought, first of all, freaky, creepo. [ light laughter ] seth yeah. Second of all, focus on giving our coordinates. Thats all that needs to be told to air Traffic Control. [ light laughter ] seth yeah. And the whole time im not kidding, on the air [ whispering ] sarah. [ laughter ] and we got off the plane, he was like, so, did you hear me . Yeah, yeah, i did. I totally heard you. Seth the weird thing is also a hundred other people heard you. Yes, exactly. [ light laughter ] everybody heard you. Seth weird pilots wondering [ whispering ] sarah. Seth has anything ever happened to you where youve ever met a pilot, where you have said, im out of here . No, ive never gotten off the plane really seth yeah. Theyve collaborated on a new anthology graphic novel, love is love. Which is available december 28th. [ cheers and applause ] seth welcome, gentlemen. Im so happy to have you here. Thank you so much for having us. Seth this is an incredible undertaking that you guys set out on here. After the Pulse Night Club shooting, how quickly did you have this idea, mark, to put together, called all the sort of artists and creators you know and put this comic together . The sunday morning after. I grew up in the 80s and im a child of we are the world and do they know its christmas. So my reaction was, i know all of these comic book people and all these professionals and all these great actors. Lets do something. So i hit something on facebook and that afternoon, 75 people said, were in. So i was like, oh i guess im making a book. Seth and was it cathartic to have this project to work through the emotions that i feel as though we were all yeah, absolutely. Part of the reason of doing it instead of just giving money to charity, was that it allows us as artists to kind of process our feelings about it and our grief and our defiance and our hope. And, you know, the title is love is love and that book is completely generated from the love of all the generous people that did such great work. Seth and one of the cool things about it is, no story, no piece of art, nothing is longer than two pages. Yeah. Seth so you have all these very succinct expressions of love and of healing throughout the book. This is one you did with george perez, correct . Yeah. I got to write for george perez. For the noncomics people, hes like the orson wells of comics. Seth yeah. Getting to work with him is crazy. Seth and so this is sort of a beautiful piece of art that you guys did together. Taran, you wrote one and whod you get to work with here . Yeah, yeah. So barry crane is the artist who did this deathstroke comic. Because dc and idw copublished this. Nobody got paid anything, it cost zero. Even the paper was free, and 100 of the proceeds go to Equality Florida . Equality florida and theyre earmarked specifically the people that were effected by orlando. Seth thats fantastic. [ cheers and applause ] yeah. Seth it really is. Talk to us about this is a fantastic piece, it really i was taken away who is the artist here . An artist named phil noto who is doing a star wars book right now for marvel and gerry duggan whos the writer of the deadpool comic book wrote this one, yeah. Seth thats great. Its beautiful. Its really a fantastic book. Now you two, well you Work Together on a comic called the illegitimates, which is about the illegitimate children of a james bond type character. That was an idea that you had and you two teamed up yeah, i loved comic books and mark and i were friends and knew he was a writer so i brought that idea to him and he was very generous enough to jump on board and we just had a lot of fun doing it and it improved our friendship. I would say our friendship was already in good shape, but seth working thats good. If you Work Together and like people more, thats good, yeah. Its a rare occurrence. Seth what did you have to teach taran since he was the rookie . Nowhere near enough. It was kind of annoying how effortless it was. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] youre nice, youre goodlooking, youre talented. Do you hate dogs . Theres gotta be something. Seth theres something. You were trying to find some hook to hate we all look and we cant find it. I know, its really frustrating. Do you want one . Seth whats your process whats your oh, no. Oh, no, taran. Were shirtless seth so, im always fanscinated when i meet comic creators, what do you remember your first comic, the first one you read that sent you down this path of being in this world. Yeah, amazing spider man 136. I was on an airplane with my mom, i was four years old and it was peter parker versus Harry Osborne as the green goblin.
