Police have confirmed six fatalities but the number is expected to rise. About 200 firefighters are on scene battling the blaze that raged on through the night. The fire was reported around 1 00 a. M. Local time. Crews tried to evacuate the 27story building. Residents say many may have been trapped inside. People were still sleeping on the highest floors so they didnt know what was going on. Im not sure if half of them got out, to be honest with you. There was kids out the window, flashing their phone lights for help. Nbcs bill neely is near the scene. Bill, whats the latest . Reporter good morning, frances. Its pretty clear this is a catastrophic tragedy with multiple casualties. Within the last hour londons police saying the death toll so far stands at six. But right now, and you can see the building still smoking behind me, up on the 24th floor already still fire crews trying to clear those floors and ascertain whether theres anyone else either dead, alive or injured on those floors. This fire started about 12 hours ago, just before 1 00 in the morning in a single apartment, but it spread very, very quickly indeed. One resident i talked to says it just went up in a flash. Other people ive been speaking to tell of quite distressing stories of people signaling with their cell phones, trying to get help. One woman telling nbc news she saw another woman on the ninth floor throw a baby out of the window which miraculously was caught by another neighbor. Other people talking about the screams from this building. Terribly distressing scenes. Residents are angry as well. They say theyve been warning this building was a fire hazard for years. It was renovated up to this year at a cost of 11 million and new Safety Equipment was meant to be introduced, new smoke alarms and a central alarm system, but it would appear from what residents are saying that no central alarm went off last night, that people were only awoken by screaming and shouting from neighbors and their own smoke alarms. The mayor of london says there are a lot of questions to be asked and answered. At the moment, they said earlier there was a danger this building might collapse. Londons fire officers here saying that risk has probably gone now. Fire officers and firefighters still inside that building now. The death toll Still Standing at six. Bill neely, thank you. Almost 200 democratic lawmakers are suing President Trump in federal court today. They claim he accepted funds from foreign governments through his businesses without congressional approval.
