They left behind a mangled train car. At least 20 dead. Horror on the morning commute. Many of those on the train and at the station here have been reading about the first attack at the airport on their phones, when the bomb here went off. An american on the next train felt the impact. We felt a little gust of wind, my ears popped. And we heard some thudding. Belgiums Prime Minister called this a dark day. And all day president obama has been kept briefed. Steve clemens is washington editor at large for the atlantic. He writes frequently about politics and foreign affair, is joining me now on the phone. Steve, good morning to you. What can you tell us about this attack . Well what i can tell you is i mean i came up from the, the basement train station up into brussels airport. And the departure hall yesterday just off the bombs. And was there to just sort of see on peoples faces the fear, the terror they felt after what happened. I saw smoke, i saw broken glass. I can tell you that apparently we lost steve clemens. Cities around the u. S. Have stepped up security in response to the terror attacks in brussels, nbc news justice correspondent Pete Williams has more. In new yorks times square, extra police swarm in with 50 officers deployed to the subway station there. On bridges and tunnels, more random checks of cars and trucks. On commuter train systems from los angeles to washington, a scramble to turn out a visible show of force. Nationwide, fbi agents are stepping up surveillance of terror suspects on the lookout for possible copycat attacks here at home. U. S. Officials say theres no known threat of a brusselsstyle attack here. And the experts say the security picture here is far different. Police in europe are overwhelmed, trying to track the nearly 7,000 people who have been to train with isis compared to the roughly 200 who have gone or tried to go from the u. S. Some of the countries in europe have unique challenge. I think its probably because of their close proximity to some of the countries of concern. And the fbi has proven adept at stopping potential attacks here. But u. S. Officials say they face one big challenge their european counterparts do that make terrorists harder to track the use of encrypted apps, disposable phones and other ways to communicate that cannot be monitored. And a former Homeland Security secretary says the u. S. Has a head start over much of europe, working hard since 9 11 to prevent terror attacks. The bombmakers are crafty and they keep adapting. This is not a static situation, it will keep moving. It requires United States security to keep improving. Nbc news bs Pete Williams reporting. Much like those reactions, last nights contests were also varied. In the democratic arizona primary, Hillary Clinton is the winner. Handily defeating Bernie Sanders. It was a different story in the democratic caucuses where sanders won the utah caucus, as well as the idaho caucus. Interesting to note, officials report massive and overwhelming turnout in the state. Donald trump is victorious in the winner take all Arizona Republican primary. And the 58 delegates up for grabs. While in utah, ted cruz is the winner. He actually takes all 40 delegates up for grabs there. After exceeding 50 of the vote. Meanwhile cruzs Campaign Says hes getting an endorsement from former gop candidate jeb bush. In a statement via the Cruz Campaign. Bush says in part we must move to overcome the divisiveness and vulgarity that donald trump has brought into the political arena. Political analyst ellis hanigan joins us from new orleans. Before we get to the numbers, did the attacks in belgium have any effect on the voting last night . I think its more confirming than disrupting. What i mean by that is say youre Hillary Clinton supporter. You probably convinced by the attacks that oh, we need just the kind of firm hand that hillary has. If you love trump you say yeah, we need some of that trump muscularity. And trump is edging closer to the 1237 delegates needed to secure the nomination. Especially now that theres the big win in arizona. That was a big win for him. Do you think he will now reach that magic number . You know, hes inching closer and closer. I dont want to call it a lock yet. But every time he advances, he gets that much closer and it gets that much harder for those stop trump people. Well speaking of stopping trump, cruz, how big was the utah win for the Cruz Campaign . Well, pretty big. I mean particularly since he got over the 50 threshold, which means he gets all the delegates there. So yeah he has a good story to tell last night. Frankly all these guys do, except for kasich, who doesnt have too much to brag about. Hillary clinton also dominating win in arizona. But Bernie Sanders won utah and idaho. Is he gaining momentum . You know people stood in line for hours in idaho to place their vote. Thats true. Theres clearly still a lot of passion there. But again, you know youve got to get back to those numbers. And while bernie may have a little mull, hillarys got the numbers. That may matter more. And Bernie Sanders says hell go all the way to the convention and try to win over superdelegates. Is that a valid strategy for the Bernie Sanders campaign . Good luck on that, bernie. Its probably what he has listen, he wants to keep pressing this message, hes clearly got some real genuine passionate support. Hes going to go until the summer. The chances of victory, i dont think theyre looking so great. Ellis henican, thank you so much. Lets get a check of your wednesday weather now from nbc meteorologist bill karins. Good morning to you, bill. Good morning to you, dara. Were dealing with a huge storm in the middle of the country. We have a blizzard, an allout blizzard, a lot of people dont realize some of the snowiest months of the year in colorado are march and april. A lot of the big cities are on the edge of this, like minneapolis and madison and milwaukee, but green bay is in the middle of this, a foot of snow possible at the end of march, oshkosh, same to you, rochester, minnesota could get a foot. Traverse city, grand rapids and lining here in michigan. This is springtime, when you get the storms, the southern portions have severe weather. I dont expect a tornado outbreak. As the world stood in solidarity with the belgian people, now its time for the latest on the investigation in brussels and for that lets go to alistair jameson, live in london. What can you tell us now . Good morning, dara. Thats right, just a few moments ago as you mentioned, the city of brussels fell silent in tribute to those who have died. Earlier on this morning, authorities gave an update on the investigation into yesterdays attack. Saying that three suspects involved in the bombing were actually known to authorities, and had been sought by them for their involvement in or had links to the paris attackers. Those responsible for the attacks back in november. They included Najim Laachraoui, a 24yearold who will gone to syria in 2013, had returned in september to europe, crossing many borders, on false passport before renting a house in belgium. Where he had been in contact with those paris bombers. The other two were brothers, khalid el bakraoui, 27 and his 30yearold sibling, ibrahim. They were sought over their links to the paris attacks. And to the escaped and antiterror raid in brussels, only a few days ago. Now there were conflicting reports a few minutes oolg that Najim Laachraoui had been arrested. Those have not been confirmed. All of this raises questions for authorities in belgium about why they were able to identify and to shut down this major terror cell in the almost five months now since those attacks in paris in november. And also, whether the arrest on friday of abdeslam, the main suspect, had simply, encouraged others on the run to carry out attacks, knowing that their time was up soon. Tough questions this morning for european leaders about the open borders in europe and how to clamp down on the movement of terrorists around europe. At least six americans were injured in the attack. But thousands are in belgium. Here at home, their families waited desperately for word from their loved ones. He was there in the middle of the blast. Chad wells son, mason, suffered seconddegree burns and was hit by shrapnel. The 19yearold was at the airport along with mormon missionaries richard norby, joseph empey and Fannie Rachel clain, all are recovering. Ironically, mason was in paris when 130 people were killed. And also survived the Boston Marathon terror attack. I think that experience of the chaos and civil unrest prepared mason toor whatever experience. For parents, news came painstakingly slow. Lauren cleary, monica hall and kate duffy, students from Quinnipiac University were also at the airport during the attack. Janet cleary got the call at 3 00 a. M.
