Pope frances met with several french Muslim Leaders yesterday and he called the attack abominable and urged everyone to stop the spread of hate. He urged prayers for paris. Meanwhile, many are paying their respects to those who lost their lives in the attack. Tracie potts is live in washington right now. Whats the reaction been like here in the United States . Reporter well, lots of concern and people who are determined to make the point that not only in the United States, but in france, we need to support freedom of speech. We have seen that in an outpouring of support in demonstrations in the last 24 hours here in the u. S. Americans rallied in new york. In washington. They want us to be scared but were not going to be scared. Reporter theres extra security at the French Mission in new york as americans wonder if there could be an attack like that here. A lot of people say i can be like that too. This is someone who is planning an attack, they want to survive and go off. And i think this is some New Territory for us to be in. Reporter president obama called french president Francois Hollande to offer support. Freedom of expression is something that cant be silenced. Reporter in paris, the manhunt continues. This morning the french say an 18yearold suspect turned himself in. Theyre still looking for two brothers including one who went time in prison. Were going to help the french try to figure out how they were radicalized, how they became part of this group that turned to violence. Reporter french nationals, all three may have french passports. Any of the fighters get on a plane to the United States without having to go through a visa interview at a u. S. Embassy in europe. Thats a big problem. Reporter as the French Embassy flies its flag at halfstaff, washington is taking the attack personally. The war onner theism is not over and not likely to be over any time soon. Reporter washington intelligence officials are going to be helping the french in that manhunt, still developing, still going on. At this hour. For those two brothers that you mentioned, frances. And just to clarify, they are still believed to be on the loose. The 18yearold only turned himself in. All right. Tracie potts, thank you. Joining me now is nbc news analyst jim cavanaugh, a retired former atf agent. Thank you for being with us. With that clarification from tracie potts, theyre armed and out there. We know that they have that plan of attack and how difficult is it to find them out there, especially given that they have french passports and could be anywhere . Right, frances. Well, those two passports are the worst two documents for anybody to have in the world because everybody in europe certainly and around the world has already plugged them into the database from interpol. To every intelligence agency. So their passports are not usable documents. What they have got to do to escape, what theyre trying to do is, you know, maybe get to somebody who can help them confederates, coconspirators that can transport them somewhere. Because they are not theyre not going to be able to stay in france. So they have an launch another attack and go out in a blaze of glory or go to syria or iraq and maybe get smuggled through there. But theyre not going to be able to use any documents. Theyd have to get fake other documents to do it. We know that other people have been detained. What can you tell as far as the third suspect who turned himself in . What can investigators get from him . You know, he could turn out to be the usual i was just a get away driver and didnt know they were going to slaughter everybody kind of story from him. Not saying thats not true that but thats often what we get with criminal suspects on the robbery murders. They told me to try the car, wait out front, i didnt know theyd kill everybody. So he turned himself and hell get extensive questioning and some of that may not be as valuable if they have absconded now and are trying to race somewhere to get away. Their base of operations theyre from france, frances. They were born there, so they have all the contacts there in the paris metropolitan area. So they could loop back and go in there to get some help, you know, and that may be their scenario or they could just try to you know beat it for another border. Or they could try to launch a second attack. Talk about the u. S. Involvement here. What specifics are the two sharing there . Well the main thing that the u. S. Has is we have the greatest satellites, intelligence, intercept system in the world. So if theres anybody talking on the phone or the computer you know our Intelligence Experts will be able to grab it. France has those capabilities germany, all those countries do as well. But that all be shared. Our intelligence agents will be sharing with them. Our Law Enforcement will be interacting with them. These guys are grounded though. Theyre not on the aircraft likely unless they can get fake passports, but thats not so easy to do. Its easy in a hollywood movie, but not so easy when all the police in france and europe are looking for you. Jim, in terms of shock factor and fear factor here, are these more specific attacks especially since they knew who they wanted to target and they knew that they were having that meeting as far as what we understand . Is that more impactful as far as their goal . Yes. Well you know its interesting, it as a great question because you want to read what these guys were trying to do. And, you know, the motives for Violent Crime surround five things. Greed, power, hate, revenge and escape. This is about revenge. And power. They want revenge on Charlie Hebdo because of their cartoons. But really theyre trying to grab power, the power of islam. The power of islam which they dont possess because they are not religious people. So these guys are at no religious people. Theyre not really muslims as we understand it. Theyre terrorists. But they want to be seen as protecting islam and avenging the prophet. Its a grab for power and revenge and all the jihadists around the world launch on to it too because they want to be seen as legitimate defenders of the faith as well. Which we know theyre not.
