And good morning to you. Im richard lui. We begin with the fatal mud slide in Washington State. At least eight people are now confirmed dead, doubling early estimates. This picture tells it all. A before shot shows a quiet neighborhood. The after shot, well, homes and acres of land wiped out after a rainsoaked hillside gave way. Nbcs Chris Pollone has more. Reporter rescuers resume searching for victims of a massive mud slide in Washington State after geologists said it was safe. The search has been hampered by dangerous conditions and oozing mud. And officials arent sure how many more victims they might find in the days ahead. We have a road there. That road is a mile buried in a mile of this muck. There may be people that are that are in their cars. Reporter as 100 rescue workers look for survivors on land, washingtons governor toured the damage by air, observing a square mile of mud 60 feet deep in some places that came crashing down on an entire neighborhood saturday without warning. An entire neighborhood wiped out. The hillside came down and pushed it pushed it all the way across the road. Reporter rescuers put their lives at risk to help others. Among those rescued, a 6monthold baby. People could hear voices coming from the mud but it was too dangerous to get to them. Mud was too thick and deep. They did not hear people they couldnt hear any signs of life once they got closer to the structure where they thought it was. And so the decision based on safety was that they would back out. Reporter a mud slide blocked a stillaguamish river, making another Natural Disaster in the area, a flood, a real possibility. The search continues at first light. Chris pollone, nbc news. President obama just got done meeting with the president of the netherlands and during that meeting he reiterated the importance of drawing a hardline against russia. Now how successful the president is in terms of rallying european allies against russia and really taking the hardline, that will determine how he handles the crisis in ukraine. As Russian Troops make themselves at home in crimea, president obama arrived in the netherlands for a long scheduled meeting about nuclear security, now overshadowed by the crisis in ukraine. Europe and america are united in our support of the Ukrainian Government and the ukrainian people. Were united in imposing a cost on russia for its actions so far. Reporter in an emergency meeting, the president will try to convince leaders of the g7 nations to increase the pressure against russian president vladimir putin. Hes a bully and bullies only understand when we punch them in the nose, but we need to do that economically. Reporter obama already imposed sanctions on russian officials. Now some lawmakers say it is time for widespread economic penalties, maybe even military assistance for ukraine. It may come to small arms. Im not ruling that out. Keep it on the table. Maybe medical supplies, radio equipment, things that they can use to protect themselves. Defensive posture weapons systems. Reporter putin is building its troops up along ukraines eastern border and leaders worry he could be preparing to move in. Local time at Ohare International airport, injuring 32 people. None of the injuries are believed to be life threatening. The eightcar train even struck the escalators that lead to the airport terminal. But Transit Authority says the train was likely traveling too fast there. Investigators will consider a number of factors. Looks like right out of a movie there, you see the trains on the landing area there. Wildlife and economic stakes are high after nearly 17,000 gallon oil spill. Hundreds of people are working to remove the oil off the coast of texas. Chinese planes looking for the missing malaysian jet say they have identified objects off the coast of perth, just a handful of hours ago China State News Agency saying the plane crew spotted a white square shaped object. Reporter they are still working on it, richard. It has been an extraordinary day here of two separate sightings of objects floating out there in the ocean, but still no confirmation that either is related to flight 370. Now, first was that chinese observation, a chinese flight coming back from the search area towards perth flying at 33,000 feet spotted what it thought were rectangular white objects, large objects, floating in the ocean, surrounded by a large number of white objects over several miles area. Now, the american plane, p8 was sent over to check on that and could see nothing. The chinese did take a lot of photographs, and now they are looking at those photographs to see whether they can draw any more conclusions. Then a short while ago, we heard of another sighting, this time from an australian plane of what they described as a circular, large circular object, gray, green in color as well as a rectangular orange object. Now, they said one of their warships was to check that out. Also, other planes going in to see what they can make of that.
