Theyre looking for possible debris from the missing Malaysia Airlines jet. China is sending several ships to scour one of the most remote places on earth. Satellite photos show what could be large parts of an airplane, one as long as 80 feet, but nothing has been found yet. Nbcs tracie potts is in washington following all the latest developments. Tracie, good morning. We want to get to the weather. Is it cooperating . Reporter well, believe it or not, in the search area it was better than they thought it was going to be. They said there were a lot of low clouds in the area despite the rain moving out. When the first plane came back, the lieutenant on that flight said that the weather in that area was good, the problem is the wind, getting to that area. It slowed them down. Five planes take off today from this air force base in perth, australia, including the navy poseidon. Were mindful there are more than 200 families out there that are grieving. And they want answers. Reporter the navys advanced radar can detect small objects like the two picked up by australian satellite. It could be a container that has fallen off a ship. We just dont know. Reporter if they are from the malaysian jet, experts say that debris could explain what happened. It could give us clues as to the type of impact, whether high speed impact, or just the aircraft breaking up as it was trying to be put down possibly intentionally in the water. Reporter the small green rectangle is todays search area. A threehour flight from the west coast of australia, which leaves planes two hours to search. It is about the most inaccessible spot you can imagine on the face of the earth. But if there is anything down there, we will find it. Reporter two ships are also in the area. They continue to do so, but with reduced speed. And using all available resources on board. Reporter now here is one thing that is providing some hope for the families. Theyre still calling it, the navy is, a search and rescue operation. Typically when they are pretty sure that there were no survivors, they start calling it a search and recovery. The satellite images show possible debris, yet nothing has been found so far. That cant be considered too much of a setback considering the conditions they had to deal with. Youre absolutely right. The distance involved is very considerable. It is a little bit like flying from one side of the United States to the other, searching around los angeles in two hours and going back to the other side of america. It is a big mission. Ten hours of flying and only two hours on station. And then you get on station, youre dealing with low cloud or fog. Youre dealing with high seas. Youre dealing with rain showers. It is a real challenge. And, i mean, there is enormous number of resources being thrown at this, ships arriving, even hearing today that three chinese warships are coming down to help in the search. It is really becoming a multinational cooperation between australia, the United States, china, new zealand, and if it is there, as the Prime Minister of australia said, if it is there, well find it. Given that you have to consider this, consider one of the most remote places in the world, and some of the deepest waters too, if, in fact, this is debris from the malaysian jet, what would it take to actually get more pieces and even to recover the wreckage and the black boxes . Look, good question. I think this is going to be more difficult than locating air france 447 that crashed in the Atlantic Ocean in 2009. Took them two years to actually locate the wreckage, the main body of wreckage. They found some pieces on the surface. But the main body two years. This is going to be more challenging. It is deeper. It is more inaccessible, it is far rougher. This will be a big, big challenge. So finding the debris is one thing. Finding the black boxes and the main body of wreckage could take many years to do that. Well, certainly the patience needed for an investigation like this.
