Lauderdale that turned terrifying for passengers over Us Airways Flight after its nose gear failed during takeoff. Investigators are now looking into the cause. Nbcs kirk gregory explains what happens. Reporter scary moments for passengers, forced to evacuate this plane when a tire on the front landing gear blew during takeoff. She said the plane took off and then it crashed. It came down. And then it went up again and then came down again and then it basically, you know, crash landed. Reporter airport Officials Say u. S. Flight 1702 was departing Philadelphia International airport headed for ft. Lauderdale, florida, when the aircraft experienced a mechanical failure. The pilot aborted takeoff. And the air bus a320 skidded to a stop, nose down on the runway. All 149 passengers and five crew members fled the jet using inflatable chute and exits on the wings. The air crew did a fine job. Reporter two passengers requested medical assistance, but both are in good condition. All of the other passengers were transferred to another plane. Airline Officials Say the incident is under investigation. Kirk gregory, nbc news. It is now friday evening in malaysia and the search continues for that missing passenger jet. Investigators are now focusing on what went on inside the cockpit. And whether the on boards systems tracking the plane were deliberately disabled. Tom costello has the latest. Reporter the search for flight 370 is shifting to the west as u. S. Government sources tell nbc news, there is evidence the Automated Systems gave off paint pings for up to four hours after going off radar. That means the plane could have traveled up to 2500 miles in any direction, a vast expanse of the globe that includes the indian ocean. What it doesnt tell us is what direction, whether it went west, east, north, south, because we have no radar coverage. So at this point, we just know that the airplane was still operational and probably didnt have a mechanical malfunction or failure. Reporter at the request of the malaysians, a destroyer is moving into the strait and the search area could expand further. Based on new information that is not necessarily conclusive, but new information, an additional search area may be opened in the indian ocean and were consulting with International Partners about the appropriate assets to deploy. Reporter u. S. Government sources also say it appears more likely that malaysia military radar did pick up the plane making a uturn and reversing course over malaysia and towards the indian ocean. Search teams were unable to find any debris in the ocean at the location where chinese satellite spotted something south of vietnam. The chinese said releasing the images was a mistake. What we know for her is still limited. Controllers lost contact, no radar, no radios, no identifying transponders. Turn it three clicks to left and it is off. Reporter mitchell cosatto says if the plane made a uturn, it would be a deliberate action. There is nothing that would go wrong with the airplane that would cause the transponder to turn off and the plane to automatically start doing a turn. We extended the search area because it is our duty to follow every lead and we owe it to the families and trust me when i say we will not give up. Tom costello will an update later on the today show. Now nbc news exclusive, the problems are mounting for general motors. Officials now telling federal regulators that ignition problems on some cars surfaced earlier than first mentioned. It involved several gm models made between 2003 and 2007 and nbc news has learned gm developed a partial fix to the faulty ignition switch back in 2005. But didnt tell owners that it was available. All this after nbc obtained and reviewed hundreds of pages of Court Documents and video depositions. According to those depositions, some gm officials made a, quote, business decision not to spend money on a partial fix. Gm now acknowledges the ignition problems are linked to at least 12 deaths but more problems this morning for the automaker. An independent Consumer Watchdog Group says federal Research Shows more than 300 people died after air bags did not deploy. Transportation secretary anthony fox is now leading an investigation. Now to ukraine where there are fresh worries russia is moving in. Right now, Russian Troops are reportedly gathering at three different points along the ukrainian border. It is rattling an already shaky part of the world and sending russian stocks down sharply. One lawmaker wondering why the u. S. Only agreed to military rations for kiev.
