Officials late monday revealing the alleged shooter had legitimate access to the navy yard. A shelter in place now lifted in the surrounding neighborhood. We feel comfortable right now weve exhausted all means to eliminate that possible last suspect, so we do now feel comfortable that we have the single and sole person responsible for the loss of life. More thon that suspect, aaron alexis in just a moment. This now joining the shootings in ft. Hood, texas or aurora, colorado and in types of scale and depth and death toll. Jim miklaszewski has more for us. [ sirens [ report morning rush hour pierced by the wail of sirens. 8 15, the first reports the gunman was on a shooting rampage crackling across fire dispatch radio. We had a report on the fourth floor a male with a shotgun, multiple shots fired, multiple people down. Reporter patricia ward was in line at the Navy Commands cafeteria when suddenly the first gun shots rang out. Three straight in a row. Pop, pop, pop. And then seconds later more. It was pop, pop, pop. A total of seven gun the shots and we started running. Reporter for sean carroll, it was surreal. He couldnt believe what he was hearing. I was running and i heard gunshots. Holy cow. Thats i dont know. It could have been way above me. I wasnt stopping to think what was going on. Reporter eyewitnesses report that the shooter took a position on the fourth floor overlooking a massive atrium in the center of the building. From there he reportedly opened fire with an automatic fire on a breakfast crowd. Witnesses also report the gunman confronted a man in the fourth floor corridor and shot him at pointblank range. But most of the victims never saw their attacker, a man walking right next to jim juris was cut down. Saying there is a shooter in your building. I heard two more shots. One hit him. He was shot in the head. It did not look like he made it so i ran from there. Reporter 12 people were killed in the shooting spree. Several injured including a police officer. The gunman, identified as a former navy reservist, aaron alexis was also killed in a shootout with authorities. The response by uniform Police Officers from both the metropolitan Police Department and United States park police was absolutely nothing short of heroic. Reporter the chaos paralyzed the city. Nearby schools were locked down, highways shut down, the capitol closed and the nationals baseball game postponed. Air traffic suspended while med de vac lifted the wounded to hospitals. As the navy yards employees streamed out of the complex, many colleagues were helping each other to safety. At the white house president obama paid tribute to the fallen. Now, of the 1 victims 7 are identified. Officials are trying to notify the families of the five other. D. C. s mayor says the victims range in age from 46 to 73. The candlelight vigil was held late monday in their honor. A number of the victims were civilian employees and contractors. Officials say none of them were known to be active duty military personn personnel. Among the eight injured, three were shot including a police officer. They are expected to survive. Reporter we can tell you that the fbi is and will be digging into his background. Heres what we know based on what authorities told us of the he moved here about four months ago. Apparently bought a handgun at a virginia store. Brought that gun here yesterday along with other weapons they believe he may have cons sophisticated on the scene inside the navy yard. Prior to that he was at ft. Hood, texas, working as a contractor and prior to that he lived in washington tate in the washington and texas area he had runins with the law over guns. Theyre looking into his background to see what the motive is. Also, when it comes to access he did have proper access to get in because he was a contractor, but that does not answer all of the questions. Lawmakers here want a closer look at an investigation that was already ongoing by the pentagon inspector general. They were looking at access and risk at this facility, another nearby in virginia and norfolk, virginia, whether or not the government may have cut corners in implementing the Access Systems here. Reporter thats right much the office of Emergency Management puts that number of unaccounted for at 650 people. Thats half as much as yesterday morning. They expect that number to decrease dramatically again today as more and more are able to access phones, computers and contact their friends and family members. 17 different counties across the state are flooded. That means thousands of people have homes that are damaged or have been destroyed. More than 30 bridges have been wiped out along with more than 100 miles of roads. Those numbers are rough and those numbers are also expected to increase. Eight people are confirmed dead and that number too, unfortunately, may rise as Officials Say when the waters recede they will do extensive ground searches. Thats when they are concerned that more people will be found dead. So today the emphasis will be in the air, those searches in the remote areas where people have been stranded with no power, no roads and no phones. Theyre hoping to make a lot of progress. Yesterday there were a thousand people stranded. They got a few hundred people out. So theyre hoping with the good weather this will be a good week for them to make many more rescues.
