Reelected the president. Im steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. President obama never used the words democrat or republican in his second inaugural address, but his political message was crystal clear. A fullthroated embrace of progressive policies, along with a directive for our leaders to spear head the challenges that define us as individuals and as a country. The commitments we make to each other through medicare, medicaid and social security, these things do not sap our initiative. They strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers. They free us to take the risks that make this country great. We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. We, the people, still believe enduring security and lasting peace do not require perpetual war. And we must be a source of hope to the poor, the sick, the marginalized. The victims of prejudice. Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law. Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see america as a land of opportunity. Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of detroit to the hills of appalachia to the quiet lanes of newtown, know that they are cared for and cherished. And always safe from harm. With common effort and common purpose, with passion and dedication, let us answer the call of history and carry into an uncertain future that precious light of freedom. Thank you, god bless you. And may he forever bless these United States of america. Well, this year the inauguration fell on the Martin Luther king jr. Holiday. After being sworn in monday, president obama paused for a moment of reflection in front of the bust of the leader at the capitol rotunda. He was joined by the first lady and congressional leaders. The girls also used their phones to take lots of photos of their family during the event. At one point, malia even photo bombed her younger sister. Before leaving the inaugural platform as the center of attention for the very last time, president obama had the presence of mind to stop and take in the moment. Im not going to see this again. Now, Prime Ministers Netanyahus Coalition government may be weaker after todays voting. Will that change israels policies . Reporter good morning, mara. The latest polling showed even though netanyahus party is about to lose eight to ten seats in the parliament, hell still make it a comfortable win today. The policies going forward, that will be largely shaped by the coalition he forms to govern with and that horse trading will start in earnest probably as early as tomorrow. His obvious choice is lining up with even more hardline parties to his right, including a right wing, extreme right wing group who are saying publicly they want to annex much of the west bank. That would be a worstcase scenario for palestinians here. Or netanyahu could surprise everyone and form a more centrist government, leaning more to the left of center, giving him, as analysts here say, more options to deal with stalled peace talks and a struggling economy. Now, that is a very longshot, mara. What were expected to see when the dust settles here, hopefully well get early returns by this evening, by minute night our time we should have a pretty good idea who wins and its quite likely to be a more entrenched and transient netanyahu.
