collapsed building eight hours after the earthquake struck. working by torchlight rescuers have been looking for survivors trapped by concrete. she was searching for relatives here. this was a seven-story building in van, demolished in a split second as locals watched from below, workers continued the painstaking task of looking and listening. the sounds of cutting machines throughout the evening raised hopes that others were being freed while everywhere.yanlt remierndzers of everyday life. this woman says she fled the building when she felt the tremor. she hopes her friend who lives here, too, is alive. the quake hit southeastern turkey sending those who arrived home to discover the damage into panic. the lucky ones staggered free from the carnage over the scramble of the ruins trying to find friends and neighbors. this is a region crisscrossed by geological faults, small earthquakes almost a daily occurrence. it doesn't alter the pain that's now being felt, but it raises questions about how well the country's authorities were prepared. as dozens of aftershocks continued to hit, it may take much more to reassure them. emily morgan, itv news. just days after the death of moammar gadhafi, the head of libya's transitional government has declared the country officially liberated. residents filled the streets in the eastern city of benghazi sunday. celebrating the new expecting president obama to reveal a new battle cry, we can't wait. it's aimed at congressional republicans who have bottled up his jobs bill. the president will unveil it today in las vegas, the e epicenter of the mortgage meltdown where the president will be offering help to people with federally backed mortgages. on wednesday he'll be in denver offering help to people struggling to keep up with their student loans. >> brian mooar in washington for us. now here's a look at other stories making news early today in america. as many as 28 people were thrown off a hay ride in ohio when its allegedly intoxicated driver veered off the road saturday night, injuring dozens by causing two trailers to overturn. injuries varied from bruises to broken bones. police arrested the driver on multiple charges, including aggravated vehicular assault. a heated exchange between occupy albany demonstrators and a couple of hecklers erupted into a brief brawl saturday night late. a few punches were thrown before the men, critics of the demonstrators, were ushered away. one was taken into custody but not arrested. a kiss in a connecticut high school play has stirred up some controversy. a group of parents and students have voiced opposition to the play "zana don't," an ironic musical about a high school where being gay is not only accepted but the norm. some object to a scene where two male students kiss while the stoobl's football team walked out of the play in protest over the athletes east being least popular. school officials say the musical's goal is to teach tolerance. finally, fantasy fest in key west is under way with a full schedule of street parties and, of course, its costume contest. since its debut in 1979, the event has created a setting where thousands of places we have a tropical storm that could be on its way to cancun, who knows maybe even a hurricane. so hurricane season is not over for the atlantic basin and again we watch south florida too. this is a slow-moving system so a couple days to watch it. doing any travel to cancun or possibly even to south florida is where we'd have to worry about that storm. as far as the west goes, not much is happening. we've had a frontal system draped over the northwest. not moving much. now those clouds have sagged further to the south. southern california has a pretty good flow off the water too. so may get drizzle along the coastal areas and there's the storm system in northern idaho bringing snow and rain showers to montana. so as i mentioned, cloudy conditions, maybe drizzle. san francisco, bottomless pit and may not even be wanted by iraqis. that's all according to a report by the u.s. special inspector general for iraq reconstruction, who also says the department failed to develop a detailed plan for the training. this comes just days after president obama announced the withdrawal of troops by year's end. it's been revealed this morning that the u.s. has withdrawn its ambassador to syria over security concerns blaming president bashar assad's government for the threat. a state department spokesman says ambassador robert ford returned to washington this past weekend after, quote, credible threats against his personal safety." a stunning comment from ham hamid karzai who tells pakistani television he would back pakistan if it ever went to war with the u.s. it's in stark contrast with his visit to washington last week. and lady liberty is going high tech for 125th birthday. five torch cams will go online friday, allowing viewers to see various angles of the statue as points. the nasdaq rose 38. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei jumped 165 points while in hong kong the hang seng zoomed 746. traders start off the week in limbo as european leaders made some progress on the debt crisis sunday but put off final decisions until a second summit wednesday. germany's angela merkel muscled out france's nicolas sarkozy over using european central bank funds to fight the crisis. instead, europe may turn to china and brazil for help propping up its teetering bond market. sharp differences remain over losses private holders of greek bonds will have to accept. meanwhile, australia's prime minister, julia gillard, a group of 20 leader said what many are thinking when she blasted european leaders today for their lack of options and resolve. wall street got a chilling forecast from merrill lynch. the u.s. will likely lose its aaa credit rating from another major agency in late november or early december because runs on saturday, the cards couldn't get anything going last night against the rangers. game four of the world series, ron washington and the rangers needed a quality start, and they got it from derek holland. kept the cards guessing. but no second-guessing what mike napoli can do. up 1-0, napoli took mitchell bogg for a ride. third home run of the postseason. rangers led it, 4-0 with one big swing. neftali feliz came in to close it out. rangers bounce back, game in the world series with 4-0 win. football player plaxico burris has been relative ly quiet until now. matched a career high four touchdowns. jets won it, 27-21. now to minnesota where the vikings look to kick the packers where it hurts. but this is the only shot they got in the chance. aaron rodgers, three touchdowns. greg jennings leisurely strolling into the end zone. packers won it, 33-27. they're the only unbeaten team in the league. after winning the first five games of the season, suddenly the lions have dropped two in a row. the falcons led early and held on to win it 20-16. bucs and bears played across the pond in merry old england. 183 all-purpose yards and a touchdown. bears traveled 4,000 miles for a 24-18 win. and finally, tim tebow got his first start of the season and with it his first come-from-behind victory. through a pair of touchdowns in the final three minutes to rally the broncos against the dolphins. denver needed a two-point converse to force overtime. tebow, audible at the line and punched it in himself. there was a 52-yard field goal for the win. the legend of tebow continues to the box office this weekend. it took in far more than expected, $54 million opening number one ever for a horror movie. it was the biggest opening in october topping the $50 million "jackass 3-d" made last year. among other new releases, the high-tech 3d "the three musketeers" came in at number two. "jiangny english" had $3.8 million but it's already taken in $100 million overseas, a huge international hit. elsewhere, will ferrell was awarded the nation's top prize for satire last night, the mark twain prize for american humor from the kennedy center for the performing arts. and finally, over the weekend at an auction in china, a dress marilyn monroe wore in the film "river of no return" sold for over $500,000. did you see any movies this weekend. >> i did not but would like to see "paranormal." i made fun of it. i didn't think it would be get good. >> they picked the perfect time too put it out there. this comes to us from knbc nbc 4 in los angeles, california, where nbc's late night funny man hit the road for a cause that's no laughing matter.
