This is Native America Calling I'm your host Tara Gatewood issues like race prejudice and colonization are heavy topics often we get into these discussions and there are a lot of layers and a play on some antics and sometimes we can get so deep into what we're discussing we can forget that people are the ones who are feeling and dealing with what each of these topics create That's why our music makers quantum tangle turned to the music to open an emotional discussion on Beast very items with sounds and lyrics well here just how they do this as we absorb several of their tracks on their new album shelter as we go and when you hear the music and this group story and you want to chime in you can just dial our toll free number 180-962-8481 extension 0 people who do so and share their words and energy on air we'll get a digital copy of quantum. Tangles album courtesy of Coke's records and right now it is my pleasure to welcome in the Juno Awards winning group quantum tangle they are joining us today from Canada they are Innuit artists Tiffany luck and Anishinaabe a matey artists gracing great many you know it's Cory It's our pleasure to bring them to our airwaves Tiffany and Gray thank you for being with us and welcome to Native America Calling and we are ready to get into the music here but just want to start off a little and let folks know a little bit about the group and why this album is really pushing forward we talked about some pretty heavy themes but what you're most proud of in in what this album brings board Tiffany go ahead and start us out. Thank so much for having us. Now for we're really happy with this album and it was a long time coming together and you know gray and I we both travel full time pretty much and it can be hard to 'd kind of section off time that we need to get these projects done but I'm really proud that we were able to do it kind of anywhere we were in and the fact that it was self produced we make the joke and that it was produced in a couple of places and also in hotel rooms across Canada you know and that even though we were busy and could didn't have ideal places all the time you know we just really believe in what we were saying and the songs you know needed to be recorded with so we found a way and we're really happy that we were able to do that and I'm just I'm just happy that the the whole album just discussed and shelter and all of the many different ways that we find safety so each track is sort of looking at. Those themes of safety and shelter and that we have a right to be safe and that we have a right to you know love the people that we love or have clean drinking water or all of those things that sometimes people take for granted so yeah that's that's one of the things I'm really proud about thanks for that Tiffany angry anything to add. I think differently muchly covers it I think. I think I'm just really proud that we were able to record it and produce it. Just so I think that we have those talents and skills that we choose. Wherever we were. And I was a lot of fun and a lot of work and I love. It and you know what let's go ahead and give folks a taste of this album on the line with us is quantum pain go if you'd like to join us give us a call 180-9628 is the number we're going to start with a very track it's called tiny hands the name of the album shelter as we go. Made me sick makers' quantum tango and if you'd like to talk directly with the group you can call us right now 180968 is the number we're also giving away digital copies of their album shelter as we go to do is make it on air share your thoughts and ask your questions 180-9068 is the number we go back to their song tiny hands. First. And we look forward to adding your voice in the conversation we're alive 196248 is the number and Tiffany there is almost there in that track which took a little bit about the lyrics and and where just exactly you're taking us. With a great question so we were inspired by our grandmothers both grand I have 2 very different types of grandmothers in our family and they were and are powerful you know women and that they had for example my my grandma and my grandma's generation coming from the Arctic in if not in Canada you know that generation you know she was born in a clue and in that span of you know 50 to 80 years has gone from you know a nomadic lifestyle living on the land to being forced relocation by the government into government housing and now she lives and in a house with satellite t.v. And running water and electricity and she knows how to use an i Pad so it's just amazing we were really inspired by this short lifetime and all of the incredible things that they were able to fit into one lifetime and the speed at which they had to adapt and be resilient and you know accommodate this these life changes that were really like trust upon them so these we were always really inspired by their hands but also that you know all the different things that their hands of done and even though they were small these powerful little hands you know whether they're sewing clothes for a family or you know cooking or stretching hide them making moccasins these are the power in the hands of our grandmothers and all of the things that they've seen and all the things that they've done in just a short lifetime. So that we were we were just really inspired by the journey that our grandmothers and the the speed at which they had to adapt. That's pretty incredible I really take that for granted. That time is coming from angry it seems like the more we hear from this album The closer we are to understanding what it means to be closer to your culture is especially through the music in with Tiffany just explain it's also getting close to relatives anything you want to share and that. I think. Part of the Indigenous experience today for a lot of people is to is that they're at a place where they're really connecting and they're rediscovering. Their roots and their families because there was so much separation and. Just so much the pression of the culture. And of a language and familial connections and connection for the land and so when we're talking about this album you know we named it shelter as we go for a reason and Stephanie kind of explained beforehand. But for us it's also we're kind of finding our own shelter in this album and we connecting to our roots and all the way through it it was here you know throat singing with a drum. You know even in tiny hands with our chanting just basically getting out our. Of our love and frustration and sorrow and gratitude you know our song and chanting. Second. It's important there's a start somewhere specially when you're wanting to figure out where you're from and figure out your relations it can be a daunting task and it could be a lot you know could be just a lot for your heart and your mind I think. If we can just tell people simply we understand that we're here to work in the States with each you you're not alone and I think. It's an inspired people to continue on their search and send someone there like their new journey share in especially when you take it to the music there is you know it's like an almost golden turbo speech because it can go beyond your small community or that hotel room where you hit the right notes and then it resonates around and sometimes around the world I appreciate you saying that today with us we have quantum tango they are mew main music makers and we'll have more of it coming up right here after this. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Navajo Nation treaty between $68.00 the nomination is bringing the document to the reservation and organizing a string of events to Marshfield Cajun For some it's a reminder of pain and suffering and for others it's a celebration of Navajo resilience will discuss the Treaty of $868.00 on the next meal of America college. That . Man. That I. Was. And we are live here this is Native America Calling I'm Tara Gatewood end it is a pleasure to be welcome you into our main music maker with us is quantum tangle both band members are on the line and we're also giving away copies of their album shelter as we go we only have digital copies today but we know you like your music so if you'd like to join us maybe add this to your goal action all you do is dial in 180906248 is the number and we have 10 copies to give away let's go ahead and give one to one of our callers we have Bridget who called in Bridget thank you for your call and go ahead you're on her while I just want her you know that. I just came back from a serious sort of family and decided to take today off after my travels driving around the work normally always here to show my car quarantining over for song target state. And it was just fantastic and the music and the lyrics and. It was interesting because talking about you know where you've come from and what you've done in your life we had a lot of discussion about that while I was visiting with family so they're really kind of touched Wow So use turn on that radio and there was singing your life Bridget we're glad you gave us a ring in the name of the track is tiny hands here with us today is Grayson great as well as Tiffany Eunick and they are quantum tango and folks just hearing that kind of review what do you think you know I'm Graeme to go to you there's an amazing how sometimes how saying the things that you can be right certainly the driving you need for that on the t.v. You see someone you know or you open up can you read exactly what you need to clear and. Then I don't know it makes me really happy that. That the song spoke to you and that's that's really. The best thing that we could hope for from your music so thank you for sharing that with us Bridget thanks again for giving us a ring here in Albuquerque New Mexico and if you want to join us 180-906-2848 we got 9 more copies to share with you today and green I wanted to jump into that song that we just heard tiny hands and there's some really fun layering that is going on in an even sometimes it's an echo between you and Tiffany and talk to us about you know why you chose this path well protected any chance. Really where you were to do what you people in the band know on hour 3 actually we had a member just recently. And so when you're 2 people or can be difficult to kind of preorder the sound at the same time I feel pretty confident definitive figure out if we really have to. But. I think for that sign. And was really important to use a lot of throat singing as as the kind of rhythm carrying the song and using and. Using the sound of the child and also adding an electronic drum. Which of a lot of fun things just layering out. Of the organ as well as all the voices you know you can you can kind of. Embellish your music to a point where it's as big as it feels kind of in your mind and in your heart so I think. For tiny hand especially we really wanted to. Do one of the music to affect the people we want people to walk away feeling that we have that we feel about about having all these questions and having them on answered. So. When it comes to music you know they're right different schools of thought you can do you can record the way that will sound live for you can record. Basically as many tracks as you walk and so I think for us it was just a lot of fun to explore all these other sonic quality use that maybe we wouldn't normally be able to use live but that you don't really need live because you have so much. This will encourage. People go and hear show and the lyrics you whereas when you're listening on an album you kind of want to you want to spark people's imaginations to see what it is that you're singing about . And adding 3 or 4 more voices on that can really make an impact and to make it sound a strategic choice well you know what we're going to hear you guys take it to the limit with what you just explained here in just a moment but quantum tingle I would like to introduce you to more folks who are vibing to your tunes again if you want to join us 196-2848 is the number we're going to say hi to Anthony here in Albuquerque New Mexico listening in on k u n m Anthony thank you for giving us a ring you're on here you know I come as where did you come up with your name scare band I must say there's a lot of bands from out of Canada artists that are so fantastic and I just hope more come to New Mexico someday thank you all right Anthony great to hear from you again if you want to join us 180-906-2848 is the number Tiffany any words for Anthony. Yes so the name quantum tangle is sort of twofold So on one hand Gray and I are giant nerds. And we love science and we are of the extend that by fiat and all of that on one hand we love the notion of quantum entanglement and that in quantum physics that one well one aspect that we've got the resonated with is this idea that 2 seemingly separate objects can still over great distance and even time that they can still affect each other and that that's kind of a notion that we kind of walk walk our life with is that even if you are not exactly sure how are affecting we don't even know who were are what we're going to affect just with our everyday life so even if it's a good or a bad thing kindness or if we do something that's harmful we don't necessarily know what the repercussions or how that's going to ripple out and affect somebody else down the line so you know that's one of the things that we kind of walk our walk our life with is you know how can we how can we spot these things that are wrong if we see harm done or you know how can we extend the kindness because we never know how we'll be linked or how that's going to ripple out and affect us later so that's kind of one side and then the other side is this play on words with blood quantum and blood quantum law and I know that there's very something similar in the state. But with this notion that Indigenous people in North America are sometimes the only ethnic group that has to prove their indigenous. And that. There is to treaties and through with the government that goal and the aim was to eventually not have any indigenous people left because then the treaties would would be null and void. There are is there are no native people left anymore so this idea of like quantum and that you know that does need to be proving how you are and that it's a very messy thing and if there is all angles up. In the media machine in Canadian government team politics. That we could be proving proving ourselves instead of just being who we are and being. Kind of a double double edge play on words with sort of quantum physics and what quantum law. Very nice things we're going you know in in the me thank you for asking let's take another call and we're going to see how to Ronald in Albuquerque New Mexico to Indian and kill you and him and again if you want to join us 180906248 is the number we're going to give Ronald or digital copy of the album shelter as we go there are plenty serving San Diego with our transmitter and tower in the Cleveland National Forest High atop monument Pekin will go to mountains this is k. I would love to make that happen. Secondly when it comes to the title of the album the shelter as we go. It's 1st of all came from a line from our song equal to. Which is. A love song to be easy to do and it's a shelter that Arctic people will will build and create and create to give them safety and shelter and to create a home a temporary home. For them by sea as we move around. On the land and. What we found with their song on this album we do it school or. You know the making of shelter and how we need it and so we need it right now when it comes to loving the people that we want to love when it comes to wanting to you live off the land there with an educational way or. When it comes to trying to find there are people and find our way in this in this world where colonization is really so this is hard for the past you know 500 years and so for us it became apparent that so many of us are trying our hardest to just find the shelter it's below and we really need it and so. I. Am so happy. That. You close to home and I hope that the people are affected that we do and that they continue doing their best just to find their way and find a good way in their life to be happy and safe. You're connected to Native America Calling on Tara Gatewood from is a lot of blow and with us today is quantum tangle they are talking about their album shelter as we go and with this album you are hearing a celebration of resilience and we encourage you to join our conversation by calling 180906248 let these musicians know about their musical storytelling and when you are one of the 1st in callers to connect with them you will get one of their digital albums courtesy of Coke's records and we are ready for your calls let's go ahead and say hello again to our guests joining us from Canada is Tiffany Iowa look and Grayson great great in many people know I'm just as great they are quantum tangle and it's my pleasure to have them here with us today and Tiffany before the break we heard a wonderful song and it features throat singing let's tell folks a little bit about what that is where it comes from and how you're stretching its capabilities Go ahead Tiffanie. Yes So I'm I'm in a I'm from the nation that's been our Canada and thinking is in the chart singing goes by a few names one of them was and the other is fast and it's a traditional form that's usually done between 2 women although there are many men who also throw things so it's not you know it's not discouraged or anything like that. Anybody can throw things here you know. And traditionally it was done between 2 women when men would go out you know hunting or they'd be away from camp and the women would be left to take care of everything else in the camp so this is a song for men it's also a game between 2 women and it's sort of sinking in around like we've all done saying row row row your boat kind of just off. In a cannon like in a round before your head just singing the same song and just just step behind the leader so it's the thing with start singing There's a leader and a follower and one person leads and then the other person goes just off of the leader so it's really different from a lot of Western singing and I think that we're we're taught especially in like choirs or school or church choirs or whatever to you know the goal is to be all that's the same exactly the same and trying to sound like one voice so I think it's really beautiful that with singing you're trying to be off of your partner and that sort of that dissonance and that you know that timing of staying steady in your own song that works together with another partner I think it's a really cool thing that not a lot of ears are used to. That we're taking inspiration newsweekly from the world around us whether it's chores or whether or animals. That those those are the things the sounds that we're inspired by and then it turns into a song and then you sing with a partner and so there's lots of different songs but. Is also a game and that game element is it's almost like trying to do scat with a partner and you're playing cat and mouse and one person can kind of lead and go on this wild ride and then the the person beating does their best to persuade the person following that their best to keep up with them and every pretty much every throat song that I've ever seen performed and is in a huge peal of laughter and one of the game elements is that it's a focused game and as soon as one person starts a little corner of their mouth start to smile because you're standing so close to each other One person starts to smile and then it just becomes a huge task to not laugh and because it can be so funny there's a lot of things going on there with the beautiful intimate way to share music with the partner in you also give us a taste of that on the album one of the last songs features you and your little cousin your old cousin having a session and then a kind of Morse into a song and I guess I want to call it the quantum tangle effect and there's a lot of fun thank you for explaining that for us I want to introduce you to more of our callers we're going to say hi now to Carol in Albuquerque New Mexico tuned in on can you name Carol thank you for giving us a ring your honor. And. Joe thank you. So. Much I didn't. See. This. Was my. Guess. Is the news. To me. That. Yes that. We are happy to can make you directly to this group quite insane go what's going to do some more of that we have Fred in Bristol Bay Alaska listening in on. G. Fred we're glad the music ratchet in and what would you like to share with quantum tangle. Our world record. Oh yeah you know it really is about music you know you're. Going to be all. Right thanks for your my purse and yet thank you very much Ok calling in. Your music is very. Great yes thank you thank you Fred thank you for giving us a ring and we hope you enjoy everything you hear on quantum tangle shelter as week old and Gray Davis song is definitely a little bit of what we were talking about that opens up so much in terms of dialogue and this one is almost kind of a historical song in the time we're living in and great anything you want to share about the song Friess melt boil. Well the real world freeze knob or because we were inspired by the action means. They can buy water protectors and in North Dakota and water to spec human still in need and the sea muskrat follows you know there are so many new water protectors indigenous peoples who are protecting the water in the lands and also exercise and their constitutional rights and. Basically bury their land rights are continually if infringed upon by governments and by corporations and so. We're not we weren't able to be there in person that we we helped to fundraise and we also wrote the song in order to show solidarity and also. Hopefully spread the word in a way that people. Maybe could hear in a less defense a way that people get scared and then people look at these issues on their own hopefully and find their own way to support and to stand in solidarity and you know all create an ally ship with folks who are essentially just trying to take the time and so that we can continue living in harmony and wondering which clean water and clean air so we can live along in this to be kind of an African trip back and so we hope people will try to take that message with them and deeper into the meaning of the words and. Deeper meaning of the words in the music. And Gray this kind of reflects on some of the things that I read about any time that quantum tingle is taking the stage in that live performance that you use this is an opportunity to not only talk about some of the things you just mentioned but also educate about indigenous people in why struggles exist in your hopes for overcoming them if anything more you want to say about using this platform even in your life performances to educate. Or a great thing about me which is that. And you know can I just get a part of this from Tiffany position so that so perfectly. That you can bypass people's prejudices you can bypass people's tennis out and head straight to the heart when it comes to music. Texas universal saying that. Most if not all people are connected to and can be impacted by it so I think when it comes to live performance there's the musical aspect and just get right to the heart of the things that makes it easier to have these hard time or stations and I think the other thing is that. I think people see 2 human beings onstage and and you know we look at these really important things to say and it's really hard things to cause the test but we also have the openness and sense of humor that I think is make it easier for people to hear those messages without getting too defensive or too angry. Too maybe in some way as aggressive. So I think it kind of can.
