Welcome to our last year voices of the African Diaspora I am talking to me goats and I am Darwin Fishman and guess what we are you're all you Hi everyone and welcome to the show Kate and Jay is a 4 probably radio station on the Hill in Cleveland National Forest I all welcome it's another Sunday here in San Diego and as usual we have amazing casts for the show on the show with the show you know I'm going to show. My doctor Fishman what's going on much. In the town again you have I think we both my gosh the busy bodies where you've been. Here and there you know what happened last week like a quick recap what happened last week I know the need to change March happened last week in Bel ballpark. What else we also had planning means we've got a defense of Chicano Park coming up so by the time folks will be listening to this radio show we will have successfully defended the park again from Nazi invasion Yeah and. I just you know we'll have peaks definitely. Snoop around walk around talk to people what their sentiments are what their emotions are and why Chicano park and is. A very historic and important monument for San Diego not just for the Latinos but for everybody in general because one thing we know that we must maintain is our culture and our heritage and that is actually our density and who we are so today as one of our guests we do have mess Angela from the in the visible want to I want to is and the Swahili language does predominately spoken in places like East Africa for example photons then you can yeah and it just means Pete's people. All right all right thank you for the most exactly I have done. I am fantastic and and thank you and I have I could tell you it's so wonderful that I don't have to explain what to me Well you got your African sister on Bard and I don't yeah. Absolutely yeah I'm a member of in the visible and into visible is a grassroots organization that was started to fight back against the Trump agenda and in a originated with 2 of Obama's staffers as they were leaving out the door they produced a blueprint for us of how we could actively fight back they had watched the Tea Party and how the Tea Party rose up and was able to block you know the administration take over Congress so what they did was they took the THAT'S IT ology of the Tea Party protest something called The End of visible guide which is that indivisible guy does come and and now we have over $6000.00 individual chapters around the country wow yeah it's very big and here in San Diego we probably have about over 40 right yeah yeah yeah regulations you're already having a huge impact over 30 Republican House representatives have retired including our very favorite on ice yes yes yes we're in front of his office every single week. And the coalition that has this is brought together it's pretty exciting it's sad that it took Trump for us to come together but we are absolutely been fighting back resisting we've had a lot of wins in terms of you know policy that we fought back against but it doesn't stop you know this this administration just keeps on keeps coming coming at it so we have to you know we have to just keep putting more bullets in recharging ourselves and getting back out there. Not so before we charge into the in the visible topic I do know that your name is Angela but hey I mean a word for our guess who you are if you would like to share where you're from if you choose to share parish personal information about yourself like where you went to school your neighborhood if you want to share so the listeners can get to know you. My family is from Trinidad. And so I'm 1st generation born in America and my brothers and you know they all speak with with a West Indian accent Oh I love you guys you guys all the what is the prevent us from going to the you. Ready to reprogram or to hear again. That was that that was that so. You know and both you this is something that you know growing up in a family that is migrates to the United States you know we come here with certain expectations and excel in a lot of ways because we're working very hard and my you know my family worked extremely hard and to give us a new life in America and so one of the things we thought was that if we you know if we played by all the rules went to school did things the right way you know said yes ma'am no ma'am thank you that we would have an easy way and then you end up finding out that you're blocked you know you're blocked in a lot of ways in a lot of careers and in economics you're being held down so. So I started my career off in journalism I was an editor of magazine oh wow the college I left college and moved to New York City and went to work at Athens as an editor and so I had a very early start and and then went to Chicago and work for Johnson products company you know here for a big black owned hair products business. And and then I work for a black advertising agency Burrell advertising works in advertising so I had a you know an interesting beginning Rice saw black entrepreneurs and and that they were able to make money and they were able to employ people and that was something that I always wanted to do and so I kind of really I consequently started my own business and and I'm a serial entrepreneur so so you know anything I do I'll turn it into a business Wow Because you know you didn't have the hobby. There to do a business so as a West you know with India we do many many things so so I've been so i'm I came down to San Diego really more you know because I liked it here and I thought it was ultimately the place a good place to retire and I came down here and I ended up. Getting a consulting contract would send a good like help associates and so so I was doing helping people with the health care I was one of the 1st people that were trained to be a certified enrollment counselor when Covered California started which is the A C. A A K A Obamacare. Really well. Yeah that's a that's that. Encloses are best buddies you know yeah yeah yeah we already had clothes on the shelves about hiring. Yeah yeah so that's I met Yeah I met I met them actually over in choice Lake Park they had a walking program and that's how I am that I met Clovis and and cities and all of them and then I and they had got they got a grant from Susan G. Komen to do education and outreach for black women on a breast cancer education and so I so I got the contract to work with them on that and the During the course of the 2 and a half years I worked with them I did you know I did the health care in Rome an insurance I did the walking program I did the breast education. But I like the I like the idea of being able to work with the black organization that is in the community and then because we have the highest mortality rates for preventable diseases and particularly black men and so and I think Darwin you saw the film that I did a documentary I made for black men on their health. So it's called State of Emergency tackling Black Men's Health I've heard about no I haven't seen it but that's right you did you gave that presentation Black men united thanks for dog my memory Yes Yeah and because I felt like you know people they do things programs a lot of programs for women and for children but I feel like black men are dying so young and we're not we're not we're not realizing that our community is at a loss you know when to we have don't get it yet cancer or heart attack will. High blood pressure diabetes you know so many things and so that's why I felt like I wanted to make the documentary specifically for black men and to to reach out and then also start a dialogue about black men getting medical care early and preventive care. So interesting so you have a lot of know how in the health care field that's amazing and so how did that. How did you connect the dots between doing that kind of contract and then being involved in invisible Well I had worked on Hillary's campaign because I wanted to make sure that we kept the Affordable Care Act I knew that you know millions of people for the 1st time were able to get health insurance because of that and it had taken all those you know decades. To finally get health care program in our country which is ridiculous you know for an industrial like a country not to provide health care and so I knew that if we didn't if we got a Republican got in that that would be the 1st thing they would try to get rid of because they have voted already $4050.00 times to get rid of it so that's the reason why I thought I wanted to fight for keeping it for the Care Act and then you know coming out of that that devastating loss and having to deal with this new administration it was a natural fit to to to to join up with people who like minded wanted to fight back and wanted to do it in a constructive way and so learning you know the new tools to use being able to call on our Congress are calling our senators be able to to to call in to the red states be able to you know make them accountable in Washington those were tools that we all we learned and we were able to execute and then putting all that keeping the pressure up because we had trumped Tuesdays every single Tuesday we would get you not in front of a guy in Feinstein our senator's office and come out Harris's office and we were out there every single Do they were the 1st 100 days of this is ministration Wow yeah that's right help grow a spine keep the pressure up exactly grow a spine. But. Wow Interesting so what else would you like to ask. Well health care no I'm just I just I didn't I did I already asked what I wanted to ask I was just curious so from from the. From journalism to the advertisement industry to health care and I was just curious to know how the bridge was formed and I was pretty much clear that after Trump a lot of bridges were formed. Yes Pretty much but mine you know mind came out of wanting to not you know. Definitely wanted to fight for the A C. A in keeping the health care and you know you know my family being an immigrant you know of course you know I'm interested in fighting for DACA and the dreamers I'm concerned about the environment and there's a lot of things that I'm concerned about you know when you have an administration that's trying to poison us and trying to take away health care and and you know things like not you know not giving your the children the CHIP program not renewing it protections for women I mean there are so many things that this this the assault you know on our population perhaps and you know I heard about the CHIP program I gave my information is correct it's not like the they proposed to renew it and then it was refused almost like these are enough gone to really knew it the funding for that was my permission accurate could you know that no no no they deliberately used it at the bargaining chip yeah basically chip yeah they did they what they did was they held back on bring doing it and use that in the bargaining with they wanted the Democrats to sign off on their budget and that was one of the bargaining chips that was on the table that will bring you know that program if you'll go ahead and sign this budget so bargaining with the health care of innocent children that's very very even worse in that the period against darkest cities you can get one or you can only get one of them you can get both you want super DACA right I really think twisted people it really are there. Is like either way the children are going to suffer which kind of suffering do you want right because it's just doc is about the children and so yeah. Yes but even but everything is I mean because if you destroy our planet then our children have nowhere to live so yeah I really I kind of don't understand because it's like Does your kids have to live here too so you know it's very odd to me that they had taken this. This path where they're going to just torch the earth that I can get well may God save us I mean God have mercy on. On the soul of Donald Trump and everybody else who embodied his message because they have a lot in our community and on a lighter note I thought you were going to ask the question and most important line kind of all the hookup Trinidadian going to really. Well you know I don't know I heard today and I think that's kind of my you know I don't have room. For I love I didn't go back to go to go for cards all my family had a we had a family reunion and we all went down to Trinidad and we had. We had our costumes and everything so we were not watching because we were in carnival so we were like in you know be have behind each truck like there's like a people in outfits and everything and you go with the band and now I know I literally could change or dance or you get this tell us yeah. Yeah but I'm looking at the date it's gonna have to be carnival next year because this one is on February 11th correct yeah yeah we got to go you know we've got a plan a what we can play or we can go somewhere else in the world where they're having you know Carnival going to yeah. OK. I'm open and there's a lot to travel all right yeah that's true and you know the thing about I want to say about individual want to is that when I got involved in the individual movement I was you know I might see you know how you like you see one black person like when me across. Like more of the lottery people tell you there's a God somebody I think over there you know on the corner yeah. Yeah I was so it kind of fell on me and I rose up to the occasion to to create a chapter of an individual that would be more open and hopefully attractive to people of color seeing me as a face of it and so that has been you know that's what watch too has came out of with the need for you know I didn't it's not like just diversity but the fact is that that you know individual was very focused on national issues and in the African-American community we have a lot of on the ground local issues happening and so I mean the we need people fighting Washington and on the bigger issues but right in our own community we were you know we needed to deal with things and so I felt like I needed to have . An individual chapter that could address not just the national things that affect us but also bring in the local issues and the thing things that are more are the priorities so I actually did a survey to see what priorities people have and I mean our the new but what people in the African-American community have different priorities. People in other communities. Yeah I mean I know it's obvious but that was I mean I wanted to be able to say hey look this is you all are concerned about you know the climate change is number one being able to have the word thought out of my mouth. That you know what I'm saying you these are your top top one Ours is not having our child killed on the street you know being able to have been on the table being able to do that you know I mean we had ours are different priorities and so that was something that I wanted to be able to address that. You know this whole issue of being an ally it's like you can't you have you can just be an ally how you want if you really want to be somebody is ally then you've got a you have to come in and ask me 1st of all what I need you can't just tell me what you're going to do for me how you're going to do it you know what I'm saying so if I don't feel that that has been and I just think I went to a meeting last week that was the black women. March they're having their own March International Day of the woman which is March 10th and it's going to be over there on Euclid in market and the 1st meeting. Why people were not allowed to come to the 1st meeting and and it was and it was a good conversation because the things that were being discussed there are things that I've been going through. You know and you know I think so it's kind of like therapy when you can be in a room just with black people and and people are saying exactly what you've been experiencing. You know no it's fasten your sanity 61 of these I mean time Bachmann united that we can do because the whole thing like well if you don't have money and you don't have like whatever union man power thing what can you do to have an influence on the election is part of it is literally the discourse whether you choose I mean discuss go to the forms go to the candidate events or set up a candidate's form interject these issues get the candidates on record speaking to these issues. That's that's great to hear and you can also do that like as you're suggesting through things like marches and rallies to. Be events being visible and also but I think we have to be president everywhere so it's not like we only stay in the black community we have got to go to their meetings their rallies their whatever have a president so that we can express our voice their. You know and so so I feel like. You know it isn't and I will say it is not easy you know because it's certainly not anything that I was looking to do to be some community liaison between the black people in the white people that was not what I was looking to do you know but but it's sort of like somebody's got to talk and somebody's got to be you know so so I felt like it kind of fell on me because I was in that individual and I needed to say to them hey you guys have to come over into the black community you got to come over here stop asking us to come over there you know I do come over there but if you come over here and so I set up you know like I got them to go we did the diamond festival and we had you know our booths there now is the 1st time they ever came they talked to black people that they were so excited oh my God I talked to black panthers you know they were just like real you know and then we had you know we did the take a knee over there. And they came out and we did that and so you know it's a process and it doesn't you know. It doesn't stop but the resources that that the the white community has and then also look at the numbers if in San Diego black people or are under 6 percent 4 percent something like that if we're going to like achieve countywide offices in San Diego that means people that want to run have got to form coalitions Yeah. Starting with people of color Yes. So you want to tell us about the event that you're going to be having on Saturday because when this show airs it will be after your event so we're also going to come to your event thank you so much for the invitation and we will also be speaking to people at the event so you want to tell us all about it so women of color run the show airs on Sunday you'll have. Interviews from different people yours as well and we're pretty much killed in this radio show around that event that you're having on Saturday would be that there's going to be good great crowd the women of color for it started off I was going to have an event the day of the woman's marched for black women you know running for office and office holders and and then the logistics didn't quite work out and so I moved it into to Black History Month and and then it was a natural opportunity for me to then make it about black women and because I felt after the you know the victory in Virginia in the governor's race and then the Senate in Alameda were black women delivered the vote we were fighting . And so I felt like it was everything with social media they were posting Oh thank you black women make you and I'm like wait stop. Don't you know stop at this fake it's like what are you going to do now what's different now you know we don't just need to say thank you one Twitter to us you know so I said you know you need to come out and you need to to honor you know black women and you need to. To show your support to our community and so that was so that was the the gist. Of the you know of the idea and and I'll tell you it it has been a real. Eye opener for me. Because you know the most progressive people. Could still have. I guess I you know I had to be cliche but it is white privilege sadly has no it's not about being a cliche something you have to be called by name that is what it is that's the world we live in that's what it has become. As we close out any final thoughts. I'm this I'm thankful that you all are are doing media and reaching out to people and also for the work and the struggle and I'm just happy that you know we are now connected and the scope for and to this definitely yeah so. Are you still going to be on up there into Mission music or do you have to go. I've got somebody here but yes I've got it I've got to run but I will see while on Saturday and then I look forward I mean we can talk we can talk again or we can talk on that we can also talk after the event on Saturday night vaca Dobie Gray because we do love to go out to events and have that background so you know when somebody is at any vanity or trying to interview people I like the the vibe of that to not just a little studio or you know you know we're you know you know we're going to be doing a protest that we're going to be signing having the petition signing for the voter restoration office com And yeah we're going to be doing that so so you can let you can you know Also let your listeners know about that and we'll be doing voter registration on the spot there Charo quick or easy or event and what time it's awful it's Saturday February the 3rd it's at the Jacob center Yanto And yet but we have but again we'll be doing another of that in March you know what do you have the collage for hand and let you all know but but we'll be doing another and it's going to be about dealing with racism and and and cultural sensitivity and sort of a you know dealing with issues around that OK and so guys but it's I mean listen to this the event would have passed but like you heard they're doing another event in March will be posting and sharing that so keep your eyes and your ears pale thank you so much Angela for thank you Joe Thank you for having me OK All right bye i now we have our intermission music which is 7 seconds from us on the war in just. All right that was you Sunder with 7 seconds away we're back this is a radio show last year voice of the African Diaspora on and as Jay 89 point one F.M. Stream it live on can I stayed out Oregon or used to tune in and look for the icon KATY And as Jay were back in there were going to be interviewing people and talking to people live at that she kind of park the defense of the condo park which will be on Saturday the 3rd and we'll also be talking to people at the Roar breakfast at the Jack of center also so keep is pilled and from now we're just going to be talking to people and going out and seeing what's going on in our community Dr Fisher Yes this will be our start of our Black History Month and no better way to do it than to defend the park from Nazis and to hear women of color speak running for office in office and about how we can take power so that just a month of February Happy Black History Month everybody as our president like to say Frederick Douglass has done great things. And. That's why you know it's you know. Only 1. 0000000000000000. 00 and. We're so fun to play with that's. What's the way let me just say it was already there are a loser. And that was it was so you. Know. Oh oh. Specifically. To a one on. One. And we can still. Study shows it's also around the cameras are not currently. Doing our response to or really are wrong. So this. Is not me it's really well written to say enough to know the color blue agree. But it's hard. Evolutionary with no knowledge of how do. You know who's our countdown by. Which is. Really all what's in the Mormon Church or serious. Then what is written recently has been. 100. And that's number something about Ireland exertion are I'm very old and very rich either there are so many you know. Who are as farmers are her. Meat out. So nothing more willing to. Run. Across the owner your leader or who are. Often sick. And someone who got training. When you take direction from American walk. Your lady one to speak the rugs and hold their ground. Critique is so much I must meet soon. I was hoping I would be or should I just talk about how the power of being somebody who would do that. But I. Sure my story with mom. Because we have a school and still I was working with a child I really got. Central Park in Mexico like a little bunch of the. River area or my powers might never that would come we're going to learn. That somebody you know about so my mom will learn with 6 children very bored and I have little. And I'm actually she may have actually been working like so why do you call matron or not my favorites but after Reconstruction and the Great Migration see me I'm going to need the money so my mom going to the north to the north at the buying opportunity for us and she left us in my room with my grandmother. I'm thinking about a year later to be reunited with my mom and the other because some things I was I was old when he was I'm sorry I was 40 we were able when we were little I mean my age. No way 5 years old well documented or undocumented. When we were. What about but I know I will and when I will know Michael. When we need to see your mother what it means to love the birth rate would it be cool want to be with your family in one place. So I met her and I was all into this country to remind her we were mother and the rest of her siblings would never. In her life that she would be. Going you know you. Mean you. Could have been to them for the last election. And especially I'm sure. What this country was like to do with the election of one of my. Friends greatest single thing every single works according to our family I'm so proud of our moms and what this country is supposed to stand. So yes it was very center of my work most of all Year of the Michael. But I would say that not only. Like me back. I grew up as a leader because. Folks not my staff but our partner organizations and EMS and billions of people that took to the street every single time we got an opportunity arose healthcare around 3 months afterwards March so for me a labor. Of work to do this is a compromise with regard to the people that share our out of those so often seem to have built a power to continue to build a community to not only focus on the things that were against and of course back in the closet but to thinking about our loved one agreed with me and how little or no and well creating other so every little bit about my work life but our economy going way back very very hard middle America if I may talk about that little girl and think this country the.
