That just everybody bundles everybody up into a conference and college football really bothers me and it should bother you too being a Notre Dame superstar that you are a Notre Dame didn't need a conference it's all this everybody goes oh man the Pac 12 the S.T.C. It is to me it feels like we're bottling everybody up the idea that that we all rally for our rival teams that we play all the time doesn't make any sense it I've never understood the conference stuff like it is an organ their own team just like us sees your own team Why is everything painted as conference wise in college football I don't get it well it's because of the cultural playoff because they're trying to create a narrative going into the playoffs as in what conference's you know more competitive is stronger than the others because then strength of schedule starts to come into play and that's one of the reasons why you're in Unite's talk about this there's no benefit if your organ or if you're Auburn for scheduling this game 100 percent really isn't like you schedule it and it was like oh man how about you know how it organ or how about Auburn for scheduling a tough team Week one and then the loser it's like well they can't go the Nationals exit or they head to the playoffs have a shot why we do it the 1st place I remember the year washed away from the Pac 12 they had one loss that year and they played with the one of the weakest non-conference schedule in the college ball playoff committee didn't hold it against them so I just I think it's difficult because we've never seen a conference champion or lack thereof but any team that's lost 2 games going to the cost of all playoffs if you have aspirations of winning a national championship and I can promise you just in Herbert does because that's one of the reasons why I came back to respond to you to play quarterback in Oregon is to win that and try to you know maybe one has been through it and that's how the game goes I mean it could be crushing I mean it could be incredibly defeating for them moving for I if I were a powerhouse program a power 5 program and I had national championship aspirations I would play nobody I would play a cupcake to start off. The year every time so congratulations for them having the guts to schedule each other against you know 2 top $25.00 teams in Oregon Congratulations Auburn congratulations but it's just a roll of the dice same thing happened last year wasn't Auburn Washington had the same thing happen last year I would play it when they criticize these powerhouse programs for playing soft Gadgil whether it's Michigan or some of these other school Firstly you have no idea how you really are when you're basing your opinions on a top 25 skill ranking that was put out before the season when we really have no basis for the numbers that go next to these teams names and then you play somebody and if it's somebody that maybe you're not totally prepared for you end up getting upset and your entire season is ruined because you took the chance against a team you don't really know that much about I would play cupcakes every time I work coach I don't care what kind of blowback I get we don't have a preseason I would consider that our defacto preseason and it's got to be against that to read oh state or whoever the hell it is that's I swear to god I would do it every single time and I don't care what the criticism would be that I don't play tough teams to start out here you have to find a multi-directional school you get I'm saying like has to look at Northwest yes like in the south of. Him He like a southern Alabama for example who might you know might be a dog fight. Oh it has to be 2 directions or. The best way is just part of 2 directional States and you'll have a shot like that big a president honestly I was taught Urban Meyer about this and I and I asked him he's like Yeah he's like you when you play when you look at the 1st day of the season you know usually you look at it like it is your opponent say this is essential he kind of a warm up a preseason game you have certain ways you're looking at it you're honestly not preparing for that opponent you're being very vanilla you're going out there to get these guys game reps you should be able to be that with pure pure talent and you know you're probably focused on that next opponent or whatever you sort of play your conference play. Like just listen don't talk about it Michael Yeah than what it was anyone schedule these teams and they're like well you know you try to do it for you know national exposure if you're a patch Well Team and you have you know you want to be more in the spotlight like that I mean the F.C.C. Is not afraid to do it because they can send their 3rd or 4th or 5th best team and they'll still end up winning at least against the Paxil opponent I believe their 10 A No the last 10 times they've played them and they're going to look like a better conference but like back to the narrative and why it matters. If you're the Pac 12 and this probably is the most eyeopening stat there hasn't been a team the one the national championship that's played more than 8 conference games since the start of the new millennium and so the Pac 12 is set up where they play 9 conference champion 9 conference games so you're already behind the 8 ball because the S.E.C. Doesn't they play 8 right and you go look at other power 5 cards I believe the Big 12 obviously plays 9 the Big 10 plays 9 and then you look at the A.C.C. And as you see they don't so you're already behind the 8 ball in that regard and that's the tough thing is when you look at. When you look at reasons why the conference narrative matters this early it's in part because they're not all equal and so you're trying to figure out a way of acquitting 4 spots to I don't know 68 teams that are trying to play for the for those spots and compare their contrast their schedule so in part sometimes they try to make it more difficult to maybe look like oh a patch well was has been down lately so we've got to do something that make it look like it's a more you know they've got a better resume if you will and then an other it's just people don't care because when it comes down to it you know they know as long as your team looks the part they look like one of the top 4 teams the constable committees most like going to vote the men aren't so you mention the Pac 12 but speaking of the Pac 12 Brady Quinn we do have some breaking news out of the back to our. I just I feel bad for Josh Rose I saw there a point some point isn't that the play that he literally went from the worst team in the N.F.L. So the worst team in the N.F.L. Back to back years it's just I feel bad I don't know that this kid's careers ever even going to have a shot like ever going to even have a shot to see what it could be I think there are certain moments and you know this better than anybody early on in your career where you are either set up for success or set up for failure and Josh Rosen has been set up for failure twice and because of that the narrative on him is that he's just not going to be a good quarterback and right and the only quarterback that you can look at over the past couple of years you can say OK well yeah that that just definitely did not work out and people use the quote unquote bust label is Paxton Lynch but Paxton Lynch was given opportunities he was given opportunities in not the worst situations in the world Josh Rosen he didn't even last a year and an organization completely sold a completely got rid revamp their entire philosophy for Cliff Kingsbury and for Kylie Murray and then he gets to Miami and it's a complete fire sale which is why I said look if I were Josh Rosen Don't be pissed off you don't get name the starter week one in fact be happy that you're not the starter and hope you're not the start of the entire season so you don't take a beating by not often subline in the preseason he was taking a beating there was a preseason game I forget who they were playing against might have been the Jaguars of the box it was an in-state game and he was on the ground every single time and I just feel bad for guys like that who get put in bad situations to start off their career because it's so you know this and you've talked about it it's a it's about what's around you like do you have help around you because you draft a quarterback and you think he's just going to go in there and save everything then you're crazy you've got to build around these guys and nobody has built around Josh Rosena because of that he's left out you know in crap creek with a toilet paper paddle again. 2nd time in his career it sucks with a toilet paper paddle squaddie PADI I don't think so let me just take you back to last year so this was his starting line last year OK I believe the had multiple rookies who are at least 2 that were playing on the off chance of wide Basin calls playing center was not slated to be there so the beginning of the year there was injury there Colby got set took over at some point he came in and I believe Reese Odhiambo came in at some point during that year some good will hold you came in like these are all guys who were on their roster at this time last year for the Arizona Cardinals and so they were essentially playing with 4 guys who had got on the roster after the season started like this just and that's just a disaster like there's no other way of putting it and he's playing with 2 rookies mind you right so if you think that's difficult starting this year where this is actually the save exact big like literally of Michael Deaver will start at left guard for them they've got Deion Calhoun who's was from Mississippi State he's not even drafted as it calls for it you know so I'm not trying to hold about 3 terrible but he's in play right guard and you very well may well at some points as a prince there are 6 round pick at right tackle 3 rookies that's of wine that I will give you 5 guesses guess anyone else who plays on all fronts of one just just just guess just you will be trying to guess any names of anyone it was not all fans of Steve to Sager I honestly I don't I have no idea I really I really don't know and here's the other part Lab It's not like he was put in the as you mentioned the best position with stuff around him last year he was even put in the best position to when he was going to get his debut to remember when he made his debut it was in the middle of a game against the Bears when Sam Bradford was turning the ball over and Steve Wilkes to room in there in the middle of the game when if you talk to a lot of people they'll tell you you kind of want to give them some time or at least a full week to prepare you don't want to debut a quarterback by. Just thrown him in there Baker Mayfield made it work but I think the writing was on the wall Baker Mayfield is going to take over it was almost felt like a surprise here you go go go against the best defense in the league I just I think that the problem with Josh Rosen is people think that he's arrogant and 8 and that was a reputation he had and so because of that nobody feels bad for him they just look at his like well go figure it out you're a cocky guy you should know it doesn't work that way it sucks man and when I told you this I remember having a conversation with my buddy my buddies a diehard Cleveland Browns fan honest to god it's a true story I remember when they gave Derek Anderson a 3 year contract extension I remember it because I remember the dollar amount it was 3 years 27000000 dollars I'm I'm almost positive that's what the number was I remember talking to my buddy and saying they just screwed Brady Quinn because that should have been your team and you should have been given the opportunity I said they just screwed Brady Quinn and the only reason they did it is because they didn't want to have the regret that the Chargers were feeling at that time that they got rid of Drew Brees a year or 2 early that's exactly why they did it and this feels like Josh Rosen has been put in in a terrible situation multiple times in a row and you've got to wonder if he's ever going to get his chance to get his own team with enough around him to have success I could almost assuredly tell you No he's not saying that I think terrible it is terrible but but that's what it's like I'll never forget a head coach in the N.F.L. Once told me that the situation and circumstance you enter into largely dictates what your career is going to be like and for most players it doesn't work out well because the situation circumstance they enter into the last thing I'll just say is if the Houston Texans are so dire to trade for the Dolphins let's tackle Larry Thompson was that good you're probably thinking now they must've really not like their left tackle but that's not who's going to be trying to protect privates Patrick or just Russell some point he's enjoying Davenport so badly that they draft guys to try to replace this guy they also made a blockbuster trade to get him out.
