And welcome back to coast to coast with Daniel Flynn of course and of course we will take your calls as well as we talk about the Jonestown massacre 918 people from the People's Temple died on November 18th 197840 years ago it's hard to believe it's 40 years Daniel but it really is I mean is one of the I'm not I'm old enough to remember it but this just barely and when it happened it struck me as the weirdest thing that I ever heard in my life years later as an adult when I found out that Jones actually held the you know he was the chairman of the Housing Commission and in San Francisco I thought no this is the weirdest thing in my life that I've ever heard my life yet when we think about mass murderers or serial killers guys like Charlie Manson are Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer we don't think of them holding these powerful positions of civic responsibility but in Jones's case he did and I think that's one of the things that really separates what happened at Jonestown with some of these other killers that we we've now in our history unfortunately but Jones was a person who was very much in with the in crowd he was a person who attracted big followers to each attracted media attention Herb came in you know Pulitzer winning journalist in San Francisco he was a big booster of Jim Jones Paul Avery who was played by Robert Downey Jr in the movie Zodiac and he was a big supporter of Jim Jones so he had a lot of very mainstream people who vouched for him what was it about this story that caught your eye. Well I think just that that that I had always come to believe certain things about Jim Jones and then when I looked into it more I found that that was a much more dynamic story than even the one that was told which is fascinating it's own right but you know just if you want to take one. Story I spoke to a number of Jonestown survivors and one of the things that I thought from a very early age with was that this was a Christian cult that sort of sort of gone mad and in fact the New York Times initially reported that Jones was a preacher of fundamentalist Christianity that the Associated Press said that this was a bunch of religious zealots the reality is that in Jonestown John's confiscated Bibles from anyone who came in there and he only distributed those Bibles when People's Temple one Jonestown ran out of toilet paper and he instructed them how to use those Bibles and I'm not going to get it to do today oh boy No but it shows you that that was a very different place than conventional wisdom would tell you he at this point he is very much evangelically atheist he's very much a hardcore communist and the idea that they were religious zealots or that they were fundamentalist Christians it's just it's just not true that's that's not what was going on in Jonestown Obviously anyone who's distributing Bibles for toilet use That's not a person who's a friend of Christianity. What happened to him as a little boy because something's sure this kid's mind up. Well I think his mother was very domineering and overbearing and she also instilled in him the idea that he was great that he was somehow better than everyone else and I think when he looked around and he saw his position in society which you know he was poor and he said he grew up on the wrong side of the tracks he sort of was instilled with this idea that he was great but sort of everywhere he looked you saw that he was kind of small and I think he was always kind of craving the attention that he really didn't get from his father and you know the attention that you know the right kind of attention someone normally gets from their mother as a kid he had really had an abandonment complex and on at least 3 occasions when the French friend would say look the street lights are coming on I've got to go home on 3 occasions he took a shot you know once with a 22 at these friends that left and hit one of the kids with a bullet in the book that's not normal behavior knowing your friend says I'm going to go home you don't take a shot at them with a gun and so Jim Jones and here's the deal that kid who was shot kept coming back and he kept being John's friend and it tells you something about the charisma of Jim Jones that as a boy he would shoot shoot at someone and yet that kid would continue to be his friend comes back out of microcosm of what happened at Jonestown were there any teachers who talked about him as a kid or anything like that. Well I suppose you know most people are gone now so I was maybe speak to them but I did speak to one of his friends who is 10 he said that he was really a germ a phobe didn't like to get dirty with the other kids was not into athletics or anything like that was polite was you know was nice to other kids but really when when you know little boy 10 year old boys like to run around and rough house and things like that Jim Jones was definitely not part of that he was certainly intelligent more intelligent than the average kid but he moved around a bit and I think that. Fact that his mother was such a strange Jock made him a bit of a strange duck too and incidentally his mother died shortly before the cataclysm of Jonestown and a lot of the survivors speculated to me that this had a real terrible psychological effect on challenging the drug use kind of ratcheted up after that point was he did he live particularly well like in Guiana did he live in a mansion or how did he live no you know he never really dressed in fancy clothes or had fancy cars he certainly lived better than everyone else and Guy and I mean he was drinking Pepsi nonstop and you know he had an air conditioner in his in his cottage but really anyone who was living in the middle of the jungle is not living better than people in United States including him he just was living better than his followers sir he had 9 children from the same woman. No Well he had one child from that woman and he adopted what he tried to do in Indiana was what he called a racial Rainbow Family and try to adopt a kid of all sorts of different races. An Asian girl who we adopted later just you know decided this was too much and she took off and he kind of denounced her he had one child who died and he had some adopted kids and guided Jonestown and his biological son lives in his namesake an African-American Jim Jones Jr He he lived as well they were both and Diana as part of the basketball team and I spoke to one of their friends who was also I'm sorry they were in Georgetown as part of basketball team shortly before revolutionary suicide happens Jim Jones the son and this guy Mike to Shad who I spoke to realize that something has gone terribly wrong and they hatch a plan to assassinate you Jones and they talk to Marsland Jones his wife this is a plan that involves pretense bring him out you know to the outside of Jonestown they had a gun and they had a shovel and they were going to bury him and just come back and act like not. Marsal mean told them Look wait till you get back from Georgetown from your basketball game and then Ben will do this when they came back from the basketball game it was to identify bodies and Jonestown so they were never able to execute that plan his his natural son and James Jones Jr who you just mentioned are in a documentary produced by Leonardo Dicaprio did they ask you to be in that they sure don't. Know that they did not I have not seen that so I don't get the Sundance Channel which it was on but there's been so many documentaries about Jones over the years and I part of the reason I wrote called City is because a lot of what is in these documentaries or I should say a lot of what is not in the documentaries is in my book and that's why I went around interviewing people that's why I went to San Francisco a number of times if your card will work because there's so much information I mean just to get. You want example Jane Fonda wrote Jim Jones a letter after she attended this People's Temple service said she wanted to be an active and full participant in People's Temple and she wanted to do this for the sake of her 2 kids she wanted them to have this experience home Jones leader Jim Jones consider Jane Fonda a member of People's Temple What I find amazing about this I mean you have people asking Jane Fonda such indelicate questions about her facelift about her time in North Vietnam no one ever asks her about you know whether she was a member of People's Temple why she attended People's Temple services why she defended Jim Jones in the press. And such an outspoken way when when the press started criticizing him that's something you're not going to find in these documentaries and it's to me that's that's very interesting because what it tells you everyone ridicules these people who drank the Kool-Aid in South America but the reality is that there were people in the United States who drank the Kool-Aid 1st very famous people very influential people and I have to think for a lot of the people who were around Jim Jones they thought that this guy had swag they thought that this guy if he could attract Jane Fonda if Jerry Brown the governor of California could speak to people's temple they thought there must be something to this guy and I think that influence you know kind of all these famous people flocking to his side that's one of the reasons why so many pick people stuck with him through thick and thin nor did he get so much cyanide I mean that's a lot. Yeah there's a lot of mining down in that region of guy and so it was not unusual for people to get cyanide for use in mining they actually it was actually less than a penny's worth of cyanide person serving so it's very cheap and they initially used been experimenting with it on takes to see what it would do and what they Jones was told by this guy Larry Shaq's who was the kind of the head quack in charge of the People's Temple medical program that this would you know the people would be killed interest instantly they wouldn't feel any pain the reality was there was convulsions and people's eyes were rolling in the back of their head and they couldn't even get so far from the temple pavilion sort of die in their own spot of land they were dying in piles on top of one another and that's one of the reasons why when when the initial report said that there were 3 or 400 people that died they looked at the number of people and once they started peeling off the bodies they realized there were piles and piles of people they couldn't even make it so far after the Sinai took effect did they think they were going somewhere like those who killed themselves with the heaven Gates cult. There was some talk about on the guest tape reincarnation that something that Jones believed in and there was a man named Jim McIlvaine one of Jones's enforcers a 6 foot 7 man a very big strong guy he talked about how he had been involved in reincarnation and that anyone who accidentally elements or handicaps that would be reborn in new bodies this would be painless and you know they would have these new bodies when to be athletic and to move around I don't know that that persuaded anyone but they did talk about reincarnation that they would be reincarnated to new bodies let's go to Herb truck driving in Illinois to get things started with us high or go ahead a I go in Georgia good this is one of my favorite subjects there's so many things I could touch I right now per family Clayton was one of the survivors was he Newton's nephew am I right about that yeah I thought he knew a doctor he was option or something like that but he. Number of Huey Newton relatives were involved in People's Temple and Stanley plate was one of them. There's also. I read the Ryan Murphy files the f.b.i. Files in they found a lot of the people most to Dr Motu there and Diana and I think of that one right it's been so long since I talked about. That I'll just say only modem. I've seen the name but what is what's the question on that well he said that he observed a lot of needle marks in their shoulder blades places where they couldn't inject themselves with it so he thought a lot of the deaths were you know actual murders. You know there was there was talk about that afterwards mainly from people who weren't there who were survivors that were trying to make sense of what happened I don't think that that was the case most of the evidence that I see and I don't know that there's a lot of people that want to believe that but the reality is that there were eyewitnesses there was a tape that was being played in the vibe on the tape is that you know everyone but this one woman and some of the children who were screaming there in there in support of this and the another African-American man who witnessed this an older guy Grover Cleveland Davis said he didn't see anyone getting injected whatsoever that they all took it willingly the one of the problems with that analysis of the needle marks is a lot of these bodies were cremated and a lot of them were so far gone beyond the composition that would make it very difficult to sort of determine whether they were injected or whether they took the poison voluntarily or whether they took the injection voluntarily for that matter Daniel how soon after the. Masses killed themselves did Jones kill him self. Kill themselves that evening so it all took about 3 hours so it's still kind of early evening late afternoon when they begin revolutionary suicide nets at night and one of the guys who escaped that the caller mentioned Stanley Clayton he actually you know if you can believe it he escaped from Johnstown twice escaped once and then he realized he didn't have a passport and he decides to go back in get his passport escape again and he says that he could hear cheering around Johnson's cottage and then he heard some gunshots and those gunshots were Jones's mistress and Jones and at that point it's deduced that that's when Jones killed himself when it was not truly was now the people who. Killed themselves the $900.00 plus were they all Americans. No there were all Americans most of them were Americans a lot of them came from San Francisco some of them were Germans earlier supporters from from Indiana and Jones also did these bus Crusades throughout the country and so they would pick up people in various cities they would just they would have people riding in the large luggage racks in the place underneath the bus where you store luggage all you know you'd stuff 60 people in a bus meant for 30 and they would go around trying to get new recruits and so a lot of people just you know came from wherever they picked them up most of them yes were more Americans down there but there were there were some people who were not that had just joined temple at various points what kind of jobs or careers did they have before they join the cult. Well a lot of them were you know they basically got very little sleep and that's part of the reason why they were so susceptible to johns they were under fed they were overworked and they were they were they were deprived of sleep even in the United States a lot Johnson placed a number of people in the welfare department in San Francisco and it was thought that that's one of the ways that they were able to get income because they took in foster kids they got the money for that they took the Social Security checks they had an inordinate number of people getting Social Security insurance as opposed to just regular Social Security and so a big part of their income in Johnstown in the United States was derived through that they had all sorts of people joining the temple a lot of the people that I've interviewed for the block I mean there's one woman that was in charge of a police union in San Francisco there's another man who is a assistant deputy district attorney in Northern California. You know there were people that were pulled from the urban underclass sure but there were also very successful intelligent people that were part of People's Temple that held very good jobs smart people lawyers people that you know you wouldn't think would be cult members let's go to Nicholas and Naples Texas signed Nicholas go ahead. Yes sir thank you for having me of Snorri I think thank you sir I was just trying to call and ask. What you all thought about American fascination with megalomania and sociopathy and psychopath c.n. How you see that factoring into politics these days I mean across the world even like in. Italy right now and France and Nepal and 9 states Well there does seem to be a fascination with that kind of mentality Daniel Don't you think well I think one of the dark sides of leadership is you know they have charisma and charisma could be a good thing but the flip side is the cult of personality and that's certainly what you got with Jim Jones you got that with Hitler too he had the same thing you got that right and mostly interesting you know just to one degree or another they have a degree of charisma and it's sort of how they use that charisma and I think Jim Jones used a very you know dark and sinister way and obviously there's a lot of leaders through history that done so as well was it always dark and sinister for Jones. I mean I think a lot of people admire him I mean he tried to you know he had the 1st interracial adoption in the state of Indiana Yeah I mean he obviously did some good things in that part of that was part of the attraction he pointed in part of it was the political angle where you know people like Jane Fonda or Angela Davis or. Angela Davis addressed the temple members down in Johnstown vs own a loudspeaker that phoned in from United States you really spreading the paranoia that they were going to come back and take final phone calls next on coast to coast am the free. And convenience security and true peace of mind with. What. I wrote a book called The War in football a few years ago when the concussion issue was a hot topic obviously him very different book than this I wrote a book called Blue Collar intellectuals about some of my intellectual heroes Ray Bradbury and. Mortimer Adler and Eric Hoffer I wrote a book called intellectual morons how ideology makes smart phone for stupid ideas and I think that probably lends itself to this particular book because that you know a lot of very smart people fell for something stupid of a lot of very famous people Jane Fonda and Harvey Milk and Willie Brown and others fell for this guy Jim Johnson it's important to note that it wasn't just these people down in South America that fell for Jim Jones a lot of people in San Francisco and United States who fell for him as well Did any of these people who fell for him later admit that they screwed up after this episode. Not really George Moscone who appointed Jones to chair the Housing Commission in San Francisco he said it's I'm not I'm not shouldering this responsibility it's not mine to bear and Willie Brown wrote of memoirs about 10 years ago and if you read the memoir you get the impression that he was a detached observer who just sort of knew of Jones rather than knew him personally I mean he wrote to Fidel Castro saying that Jones was someone that he should give a state visit to as if he were world leader Willie Brown was one of the biggest supporters of Jones one of the things that really amazes me his biggest supporter in San Francisco was this guy called Goodman who was a newspaper publisher with position. Called good with defended Jim Jones after Jonestown he was attacking Leo Ryan attacking the press who would expose Jones is attacking the concerned relatives of his one of their family members back called him good with them the most prominent street address in San Francisco is now named in his honor because City Hall is one call to be good to place the most significant thing this guy did of life was to act as a propagandist for Jim Jones and yet you have San Francisco on earning him with not just some alley Raese but the street the street that give City Hall its address and so they've largely forgotten about all of the people who were boosting Jim Jones and San Francisco while you haven't. Let's go to Carlos in San Francisco Hi Carlos go ahead Hi good evening good morning and wish you both a. Happy Joyous Thanksgiving think you too you're welcome my like to practice my question I'll be really brief but I'd like to preface my question by stating that my understanding especially after watching a documentary called deprogrammed on Netflix about cults and specifically highlighted this one individual an African-American in San Diego who. Used these kinds of non psychologically sound techniques to basically bring people into sobriety from their indoctrination of the respective cults that they have been consumed in and so but interesting they do mention that in the Guyana tragedy that at that point is when the newspapers now starting to want to cover cults because at this time they didn't want to and then what seemed what they explained in this documentary it was a lot of people that were trying to expose cults work getting sued and they were getting buried in legal motions that legitimately they just couldn't afford 'd it anymore and so but I'd like to preface my question by this that when someone gets an doctored in a called My understanding is that there's a cognitive dissonance that is really being manufactured and so therefore there's kind of this out of mind this subject that's being. Consumed into the cult and immersed into the cult and so therefore there was and so. So family members need whatever resources available to the Celebrate the extrication someone that has gotten involved in a cult and even mentioned the Heaven's Gate For example look you know all those documentaries of the subjects that ultimately committed suicide I mean these people are very intelligent people they are computer programmers. But what I'd like to ask your guest if he could speak to this I don't know if he can or not it what legislation is in place or should be instituted in place that party go up won or could could refer to to. Promote the sort Cilla Taishan the legal channels to aid in the extrication. Of someone that is. Now caught up in a cult because it's because there's a standoffish. Posture where they had been you know they're an adult they can do whatever they want to their free will but isn't the case I haven't you know I mean I'm sure a lot of these family members were devastated that they couldn't they could refer to any legal body or any legal statutes that would enable this so that's my question to your task thank you for allowing me to speak sure thing and I'm not sure that there's any laws available to allow them to go get people to Daniel even now I don't think there is I think they've an excellent question it's one I've thought about a lot but it's a it's one unfortunately I don't have a very good answer for because as the caller points out these are adults and we assume that people have free will and it's very difficult to tell an adult to do extract an adult from a place that they want to be I think in the case of People's Temple they had a legal pretext to go in there because some of the people were kidnapped they were being held there against their will and some of them admitted to this people escaped there was one man who escaped prior to 2 the cataclysm and he talked about being you know abused and that kind of thing so there was reason to go in there there was a court order from California there was also court proceedings in Guy Anna about the 6 year old boy that Jones kidnapped and so they could have done something but they didn't and I think it a lot of cases with calls there usually is some type of you know that they're involved in a lot of wrongdoing that the law could go in there and not just say that you know these people are brainwashed but to use the law to get the people out unfortunately they didn't do that Jonestown are there do you think. Jim Jones is out there now. All I'm sure I mean to that scale I mean this isn't a that's you know I don't want to say it's unrepeatable because on small scale like but haven't gate it's been repeated and I think the caller brought up an interesting point that you know the reaction to Johnstown in some ways it was an overreaction to what we saw at Waco the common denominator with Waco in Johnstown is that the government really screwed up now I don't know enough about Waco to say exactly what happened there but the overwhelming force that they used I think the context of Jonestown really sort of. You know you have to see Waco in the context of John kind of what became before it because they didn't want something like that to happen and obviously something very bad happened at Waco and they sure did Joe Long Island New York are just of going down you know threats and topic. He seemed to men make faith healers and I'm wondering what the popularity was of the idea of faith healing on the West Coast at the time and whether it's moved to San Francisco was calculated to San Francisco and also with Georgetown you're saying that this temple skate was adjacent or in the city now Georgetown is not a backward place you can walk around freely you can take a bus you can walk to the seawall and so forth. You know what's to prevent someone from going out and walking around especially if you're African-American and a lot of the population that was black you could quickly blend into the crowd it's anguish speaking it's not like you're boxed out because of the language issue either so I don't understand how these people were held hostage and I said the way you can hop on a bus freely and walk around freely there were a few People's Temple members who escaped because they were allowed to go to Jonestown there was about 50 people living in the temple headquarters in Jonestown and most of those people with. Most trust some members Sharon Amos woman who once volunteered that she would feed her family bird seed to save save the People's Temple money she was someone who was allowed to live in Georgia Georgetown because they knew she wasn't going to leave she was the most committed the committed and she ends up slashing her kids' throats and Johnstown but some of the the members who were got to Jonestown were able to escape that way just by the very names that you you suggest but the fact is that they had a 1000 or so people in Johnstown and most of those people unless they needed dental work or some medical work were not going to be allowed to go to Georgetown they were they were in Jonestown shut off from telephone communication from television the news they were getting were just these loud speaker harangues from Jim Jones Thank think like they were concentration camps the United States they were getting a lot of misinformation and they were not allowed to leave if they didn't want to leave it was a jungle with jaguars and spiders and all sorts of dangers that they had to get through to do that next stop let's go to Devaney in Mississippi hi Devaney go ahead . How do you pronounce my name perfectly perfect I'm loving how limited is because I have a great producer who phonetically spells it for me. That's awesome I wanted to ask Daniel I had read something about it. When I guess Diane Feinstein was on the board of supervisors in San Francisco and if he named this was true about hair honoring him is like a great humanitarian and. Mistruth to the Board of Supervisors unanimously presented a certificate of Honor to Jim Jones and 176 for his humanitarianism Dianne Feinstein who did you know more so than out of San Francisco politicians she could keep the temple at arm's length but she was one of the ones that voted for the certificate on her Nancy Pelosi his brother in law was another who voted for that so you know it was at that point it wasn't the Feinstein work it was then with Joan with the People's Temple and say you know Governor Brown or Willie Brown Harvey Milk what she did she did in fact you get that is true. You know Daniel can another Jonestown happen. Well I don't know if it can happen exactly that way it's almost an unrepeatable is that I mean if you think those are right which are it's it is the largest loss of civilian life in American history up until 911 you know the idea that you could get 900 or so people in convention to kill themselves that is a very hard thing to pull off so could it happen at that scale. You know history Johnstown in the pavilion they had a big sign up that quote sunk you know that you know those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it so you should remember the past because these things can repeat I don't know if something like that something so bizarre on such a grand scale if it could repeat like that but as we've seen from Heaven's Gate and other examples it's things like that have happened just not on that scale Joe in the Bronx taking away Joseph go ahead a Jew and héloise race around Thanks Happy Thanksgiving and you too Thanksgiving Day when you think you. And what is good question pertaining to to seem ill members of the People's Temple what what influence in as far as sexual relations is concerned to Jim Jones have over his female members and can you explain. The idea that he was presenting himself to his follow was as their. Yeah with the female members you know Jones had a rule of abstinence for the people in People's Temple and some followed 'd it and some did not. With the female members he he had sexual access to them if they didn't give them access you know he would often force themselves upon them and I should add that this didn't was he you know on occasion he would force himself on men as well in rather humiliating ways he actually one of the groups that defected from People's Temple in 1973 part of the reason why they laughed as one of their leaders was doing poorly in school in general was decided that the the way he could do better in school is that if Jones got on top of them and he didn't that didn't sound too good to him and so he took off with about 7 other young leaders in People's Temple the interesting thing I talked to a number of gay men who were involved in People's Temple Jones never came on to them it was only the straight men so this was a really I don't know it was a power thing for actual thing it was a power thing for him it was a power thing and it was the same thing for the women but he had a type of women that usually was very skinny small breasted white women and occasionally he would you would veer from that but if he had a type of woman that he would go after and they were available to him I wonder if psychiatry has analyzed him what they would have come up with. I'm not a psychiatry is but yeah they would have come up with something right to go to Christine and saying Lois Hi Christine Hi I'd like to ask your guest How did you interview the one mental escape death by hiding in one of the cabin. There was a woman who died along time ago an older woman who who did that and she was asleep when when the suicide started she woke up I think she realized what happened so I you know it's best to go back to bed she was one of the pit persons that evaded death there were 2 younger African-Americans kind of street smart guys one had been in the Army the other was a cousin of humility and they just basically used their smarts and their their skills to get out of there as quickly as possible one other man hid in a ditch and sort of witnessed what happened he was an older man as well but that woman has been dead for a long time what would have happened had somebody faked it you got 900 people there all sipping cyanide and you just fake it not put it in your you don't drink it they all die do you can you get away or does Jones come after you well if they're surrounded by gunman and they're surrounded by archers and so did those people kill themselves afterwards yes they did they did too she's crazy crazy Well Daniel Morcombe people get the book called City.
