Premier networks presents coast to coast am with George Noory. 40 years ago on Nov 18th and 978 more than 900 members of a cult group peoples temple were led by their leader Jim Jones to commit mass suicide by cyanide in the Jonestown settlement. And his 2 surviving sons are still healing from that tragedy Stephen Jones and his adopted brother Jim Jones Jr were both 18 then have come forward in a 4 part documentary series Terror in the jungle which recounts in great detail the deadliest day for Americans before the 911 terrorist attack the documentary is executive produced by Oscar winning actor Leonardo Dicaprio and is based on the bestselling book by investigative journalist Jeff Glynn titled The road to Jonestown in a moment Daniel Flynn joins us author of Cold city next on coast to coast am. Oh and welcome back to coast to coast George Norry with you let me tell you about our special guest Daniel Flynn he's the author of called City Jim Jones Harvey Milk in 10 days that shook San Francisco and 5 other books he works as a senior editor for The American Spectator his articles have appeared in The Los Angeles Times Chicago Tribune and Golden Globe New York Post and many other publications and he writes from Massachusetts and Vermont Daniel walked into the program a thank you for having me looking forward to this Massachusetts an Irish That's perfect isn't it yeah. What a funk and that's right really how did you get started as a journalist. I just got a writing quality and I realized I liked it a lot it's not something that I ever thought you know I was a reader as a kid and I think all writers start off as readers and it's kind of like you can't play basketball without watching a basketball game for us and I think it's tough to be a writer unless you're reader 1st and give me your thoughts to Danielle on what's happening with our newspapers nowadays with the union at our mean are we still getting people reading newspapers not nearly as much as they used to but I mean are they making up for it by reading the l a Times Online for example I think when people read online they actually skim and there is a book called The Shallows that came out a number of years ago that made this point I started out as a Boston Globe paper boy and that's how I got a scholarship to college so I read the paper every day and it was a big thrill my life later when I wrote a piece for the The Boston Globe So 2 to 5 and a half years from the time I make to 13 I'm delivering the newspaper so I use papers you know that was a big deal back then and obviously it's not much of a big deal anymore and I think the papers are forced to lay off reporters and photographers especially And so it's not you know it's not the best of times for newspapers or journalism and country you know he it's not and what's sad Daniel is we're going to lose that investigative technique that we had with newspapers. You know and I've had a career in television in and radio the you know t.v. Doesn't really devote that kind of time to investigations they want the story that night but you know with newspapers you know when you look at Woodward and Bernstein when they broke Watergate they worked at this thing for a long long time and they had the support of the editor and the publisher and they went forward that that's not happening anymore No I don't I don't think so and I think t.v. Is really a passive medium one of the reasons I love radio and I love your program it's. It's something that lights up the imagination you know when that when the lights go dark at night the imagination comes alive that's that's really what I've always loved about Coast to Coast so 40 years ago we had this horrible tragedy in Guiana But tell us about the People's Temple because they were they were they from San Francisco originally originally they were from Indiana and Jim Jones his theology and his politics didn't quite match with Indiana so he moves down to Brazil and then he has a revelation that we're all going to die in a nuclear war and there is a place in Redwood Valley that he claims is going to be protected from a nuclear holocaust and so he moves about 150 people from Indiana to Northern California and in Northern California at that time things you know the stars were kind of aligning for Jim Jones because you know this this was a place in the in the late 1960 s. Early 1970 s. You kind of had the hangover after the high they moved down to San Francisco and of course San Francisco in the 1970 s. You had the cement East Liberation Army you had you know kidnapping Patty Hearst yuppies assassinating Marcus Foster and in Oakland you had the snow diac killings the zebra killings you know shooting already Agnes who later becomes the mayor of San Francisco in the chest the new world of ration front putting a bomb once on Dianne Feinstein's window sill her daughter's window sill you have the attempted assassination by Sarah j. More on the present United States Gerald Ford and 1975 so there's a lot going on in San Francisco in those years and in that context People's Temple almost looks mainstream to 2 people in San Francisco and you have people flocking to them and you know a lot of leaders local leaders press figures celebrities viewing the People's Temple is doing something great Tell us about Jim Jones Daniel exactly who was he. Jim Jones when he gave his own lot of by our graphical sketch he said that he you know he went to the church he said he said the thought. Was How can I demonstrate my Marxism and he said The thought was to infiltrate the church now he's not the best authority on Jim Jones he was a liar and often you know made things up about himself but I think he tells the truth there from a very young age he was interested in religion I spoke to a kid who knew it well kid it almost 90 year old guy now who knew him when he was 10 years old he told me a strange story about Jim Jones they went to a kind of a Pentecostal church in Indiana and at the end of the service the minister said if anyone hasn't been saved please come on up and Jim Jones comes on up get saved the next week he does the same thing and Jim Jones comes up now you're only supposed to do this once but Jim Jones every week would come up to get saved and the theory from this old friend of John zones was that he really liked the attention and from there Jim Jones started preaching to friends someone caught him preaching to a forest. Is essential he came quite good at that and it was a bit strange because he came from a family in the Bible Belt that did not go to church and that was very unusual at the time his father was a World War One vet who was really disabled more and more psychological than anything else from the war and his mother was this domineering character very strange woman she changed her 1st name 3 times as an adult she believed that she had you know walked the earth as the rich and famous in past lives she wore pants at a time that you know women wearing dresses and skirts and that kind of thing so people found her to be a very strange woman wouldn't let Jim Jones in the house when she was not home. When Jones would steal things he would you know almost reward the boys and not not not punish him for this so he had a very strange upbringing was was a bit of an outcast and he found that he could get a lot of attention through the ministry at the same time it's not clear that he ever believed in God He died at the age of 47 of course Indiana had 9 children kind of looked like a Hollywood actor Danny. Well this is certainly his jet black hair it reminded me of Elvis in the air anywhere sunglasses once when he got to California he started wearing sunglasses and he started wearing sunglasses inside which even in the late sixty's that was kind of a strange strange behavior it's kind of thing that rock stars were you and Jim Johnson is on the way was a rock star in front of his in front of his People's Temple but the people that I spoke to him in the temple they kind of figured out a certain point that he was wearing those sunglasses because he was doing a lot of drugs. Interesting what kind of magnetism did he have Daniel in order to be able to persuade people to follow him the way he did well he was a tremendously charismatic man and I tell you just one story that just blows my mind I interviewed a guy who defected from the temple in the mid seventy's before Jonestown happened he hates Jim Jones in this guy is a very smart individual very educated man has an advanced degree from Stanford and I asked him you know at what point did you realize that all these faith feelings were fake Did you realize that Jim Jones was a flim flam man he said What are you talking about I said At what point did you realize that this was all a bunch of hocus pocus that I don't understand your question I said when did you realize the guy didn't have the supernatural powers if you don't know Jim gentle and had powers to this day while 40 years afterwards he believes that Jim Jones possessed supernatural powers and he went on to cite a whole bunch of instances in which Jones used these powers for good or for evil and so even if you don't believe that Jones had these powers. It suggests that he had a power of some sort yeah charisma psychological hold to have a guy 40 years later who hates Jim Jones saying that no Jim Jones had this power while he had some kind of power obviously in a very bizarre way Daniel had he lived he probably would have been an absent litter a listener of the show he sounds like he was into these things. Well he certainly was he was it he was into reincarnation and e.s.p. And the you know he presented himself as as having supernatural powers and a lot of people believe that that wasn't the only guy that I spoke to who believed that Jones had powers and he was in a very specific way the People's Temple would brag about the various uses of his powers in 1972 for instance they claim that he had you know raised 40 something corpses from the dead and they would have testimonials from various people saying that he cured cancer from them he claimed to have cured cancer from Huey Newton parents so. For if you look at the Jonestown dead there's a huge percentage of them that are older people about a 3rd of them who died were elderly or senior citizens a lot of the attraction for a lot of these people to the church was that they were getting all they had various ailments and Jim Jones claimed that he could cure them and a lot of them believe that he did cure them one woman I spoke to her dad had a heart condition couldn't work and Jim Jones you know laid hands on him in church he went to the doctor the doctor said Your heart's healed they believe that they had he had healed this woman's father and so the whole family from that point forth there and get it to him for that and they stick with him and you can imagine how much of a hold that would have on people oh my God Yes So at what point Daniel did he decide to move from California to the Guiana. Well in San Francisco he had a very very eventful run and one of the things that people don't realize about Jim Jones is that you know he held positions of power in San Francisco he was appointed to the city's housing commission authority and he very quickly became the chairman of the Housing Committee commission. Effectively making him the largest landlord in San Francisco which is kind of a scary thought when you think of how he treated his tenants and Jonestown So he was a beloved figure in San Francisco Willie Brown called him a combination of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King he wrote wrote failed Castro saying that Castro should have a grant Jones a state visit when he came to Cuba to meet with Huey Newton El Castor didn't do that but Brown said that Jones was a highly trusted brother in the struggle for liberation and even Rosalyn Carter the part the president's wife when she can't San Francisco she had Jim Jones and to do certain she's campaigning for Jimmy Carter he dines with with Rosalyn Carter they speak on the phone we know this because Joan surreptitiously tape the conversation they transcribe it and Rosalyn Carter referred him to Ruth Carter Stapleton who was the president sister who was involved in the ministry and then they began to converse and so he was very much in with the in crowd in San Francisco what happens is at a certain point all of these stories just become too big to ignore there are people talking about being beaten in the temple being forced to sign over their homes being forced to give their money Jim Jones these fake faith feelings where he would pull chicken gizzards from people and claim that they were cancer all of this kind of caught up to him so the very thing that made him attractive people to a nice faith dealings threatened to I make him and he was he was facing some some legal issues mainly he had kidnapped a boy from 2 of his followers who defected he brought that boy down the guy and in short. There after about a 1000 people from San Francisco follow him to Jonestown So up until this point Jonestown for a lot of people that I talk to they found it to be a very pleasant place but once Jones gets gets down there it becomes a very dark unpleasant place not so much a commune as it is a concentration camp was he in your opinion Daniel insane I think he was on drugs and I think he was someone who was off the charts narcissistic he didn't view human beings as actual human beings but sort of this pawns in the movie that he was starring in and he treated people like that now whether that's insanity or a personality disorder I'm not a psychiatrist or anything like that so I couldn't answer that. Certainly you know in his preaching he claimed to be God He claimed that socialism was was God and that he was the. Person who represented socialism fast on earth so that made him God and for some of the people in People's Temple some of mainly the white people who kind of were attracted to his preachings against the a Vietnam War for civil rights or for various political things they were attracted to that message the message that. A lot of the older folks were attracted to was sort of the faith healing and I think the majority of people came to people's temple because of these fake dealings but once they were and he sort of went on these sort of long for the Castro like harangues talking politics and it became very much kind of a political pressure group more than it was a church and the 900 that he brought to Ghana were there more who decided they didn't want to kill themselves or was that the number. Well it was it was pretty close to everyone who was there so on Nov 18th 1978 Jones decides to unleash what he calls a revolutionary suicide and what provokes this is a visit from Congressman Leo Ryan and we are Ryan comes down there is to he's concerned about the treatment of people and also because of this kidnapped little boy and. When Ryan leaves Jones sends out his security force people call the Red Brigade and they assassinate the congressman they kill 3 journalists and they kill one of the defectors in a shadowy point they unleash what's called revolutionary suicide and inside of Jonestown The amazing thing about that is that there's only 4 people who really escaped there are about 15 people who leave with the congressman there were about 1211 people who were earlier that day just got out under the guise of going to a picnic but they were really escaping but once the killing starts There's only this for African-Americans who either evade getting killed or escape There's 5 people he lets go there's 3 members that he because you know 1000000 or so dollars to him tells him to give it to the Soviet Union they leave his 2 lawyers Mark Lane and Charles Gary he allows to leave but other than that everyone dies is Mark Lane The Who became the great author that this is the same Mark Lane he became Jim Jones his lawyer at the very end. Charles Garrott who was Angela Davis and you knew his lawyer he became Jones or square and Elaine and Gary and they they escaped through the jungle and they hate each other and they sort of walk through the jungle rather humorous story Gary has this big suitcase and Wayne saying get rid of a suitcase get rid of a suitcase and Gary won't won't do it and finally he finds out what's in the suitcase it's a hairdryer. So walk the judge. Well with his big overloaded hair dryer but that's it you know you have work people waste 909 people die in war people escape so they were amazingly effective at what they did just I mean I remember that story and just how tragic it was it was almost unbelievable that he would have those kinds of followers do what they had to do they died by cyanide he ended up killing himself shot himself in the head didn't he. Yeah there's some dispute whether he shot himself in the head or his mistress shot him and for him but he's he's probably the 2nd to last person to die John and I think it says something that he chose to die in a different manner than all of his followers did what they were they basically served less than a penny's worth of cyanide with Flavor Aid and some value to all of the temple members they used to chill they the children went 1st and I think he did that for psychological reasons because after you see babies and kids dying the will to live is kind of stepped so even at that point he was playing head games with the members of People's Temple if you listen to the death tapes there's only one objection. A woman an African-American woman from Texas 60 year old woman Christine Miller stands up to Jones and basically you know says what about the kids and you know her argument is Why can't you know can't we just all go to the Soviet Union and live and because that's what Jones had told them that emigrating to the Soviet Union and John said it was too late for that and she puts up a very good fight she's very logical but what's amazing to me is if you listen to the death tape she's the only person that's objecting other than the kids you hear crying and you hear person after person thanking Jim Jones thanking for thanking them for allowing them to die for what he called revolutionary suicide thanking him for Jonestown and in fact when Christine Miller objects there's a group of people to try to rush or they're violent reality and telling her to shut up and that kind of thing Hold on Dan you know we're going to get a break but we'll come back and talk more about this city's war culture he will be back in a moment on coast to coast am one of the perks of being a coast insider is that you can participate in our twice monthly live chat sessions or read the transcripts later George Noory chats with the insiders on the 2nd Tuesday of the month and a special guest is featured later in. And welcome back Daniel Flynn with us Daniel how do we know that Jim Jones didn't murder these 900 people maybe poison their food or something like that. Well it was on a tape so he recorded his what happened at the end there were also witnesses one of the African-Americans who escaped saw what happened and he said that as far as he could tell that no one was you know no one was resisting that they were doing this voluntarily he didn't see anyone getting injected that they all took the the poison voluntarily Now there is a case to be made that you know these people were so thoroughly brainwashed that what happened there was murder. This junk started drilling People's Temple on what he called revolutionary suicide all the way back in 1975 so over 3 years he was conditioning them to accept that and at the fur I spoke to 2 people who were at the 1st meeting where he gave out wine which was unusual for the temple because they were supposed to be you know abstinent from that and he said you know drink up and when they drank the wine he informed that they had 45 minutes to live and that they would all die at this point one of his secretaries started basically freaking out saying she didn't want to die and someone came in with a gun and shot her 3 times God they used blanks and this was all staged by the lesson that was learned there is that if you resist you're going to be made a fool of and you're going to be shunned and this woman was shunned I spoke to a woman 40 years after she still believe that this woman was you know freaking out she didn't realize that she was acting all these years later she realized exactly and so the message there is just drink up you're not going to die and if you do resist something really bad might happen to you in Jonestown he continues this with something called White Nights which were these kind of staged sieges of Jonestown where he would announce on the loudspeaker that they were under attack but there were people shooting at them from the remainder of the community and that they all had to come in and defend. Community and if these people were to come in they were all take their own lives and these would last sometimes days and days and days and so the idea of suicide was not only something that was drilled into their heads for 3 straight years but it was something that for at least about 7 or 8 months prior to Jonestown many of the defectors had warned the State Department they had warned the media that people in people Stempel would all kill themselves on mass very few people took this seriously one of the people who did take it seriously was Congressman Leo Ryan and that's one of the reasons why he went down there but the Associated Press for instance they reported these charges the State Department was told numerous times and Guy and I and in the United States they remained somewhat neutral and in fact when some of the defectors went to them with information they fed that information back to Jim Jones so they took a side and the side was not height of the good side. You know unfortunately after the fact there were a lot of cover ups and people sort of running away from responsibility of course knowing what you know hindsight is 2020 and probably even sometimes when people say well all these people going to kill themselves it sounds so fantastical that the people making the charge seem like the crazy ones and I think that's what a lot of people felt back then but it's not as though Jonestown happened without warning people warned about it and sesame for a good 678 months prior to it happening it's just amazing that $900.00 plus people would do that he'd have that kind of control over these people. He did and a lot of it was the conditioning a lot of it was the you know the fact that they were surrounded by gunman they were surrounded by archers they had people who were who left that day who were shot up on the airstrips there was knowledge of what would happen to you if you didn't drink the Kool-Aid and beyond that there was a sense you know rather than just this meaningless act of nothingness Jones put it in their minds that they were they were protests at this was an act of protest what he said it was an act of you know protesting the inhumane conditions of the world and that they were giving their lives for the glory of communism and you hear people on that on the death tape you know thanking Jim Jones because they are allowed to give their lives for socialism and that if they didn't give their lives they were going to be invaded their kids were going to be killed and they would be raised to be dummies like the Great Socialist Jim Jones and so there was this other aspect of the idealistic component of it I guess you could call it where they actually thought that they were doing something this was a political act that they were engaged Now the subtitle of your book Cult city says Jim Jones Harvey Milk and 10 days that shook San Francisco bring Harvey Milk into it that Sean Penn played him in a movie did he not about Harvey called Milk didn't it won an Oscar for I think it won the Oscar for that it won an Oscar and nowhere in that movie you're going to see Jim Jones mentioned and I find that really peculiar Harvey Milk runs for office 4 times in San Francisco really doesn't get anywhere and still he be friends Jim Jones and Jim Jones is able to give Harvey Milk hundreds of campaign volunteers give them a printing press give them his pulpit to speak at where whenever he wants Jones has a newspaper that goes out to a lot of people called the people form and gets good publicity there and so Jones is able to provide milk and other politicians in San Francisco with a lot of what politicians crave you know. On tears and complicity and that kind of thing in return milk was able to give John's legitimacy and Jones got the better end of that deal because when things went south for Jones in San Francisco Harvey Milk really went into overdrive to the lobby world leaders on Jones's behalf he wrote the present United States when there's this custody dispute went down to kidnap the 6 year old boy. Milk took the side of the kidnapper in fact he wrote Jimmy Carter said that Jim Jones was thought of as the man a man of the highest character in San Francisco but this boy's mother was a blackmailer his father was a teller of bald faced lies he wrote that the prime minister of guy any such greatness I have found in Jim Jones people sample he wrote us of callus I know who is the secretary of Health Education at the time cabinet member he said the Jonestown was a beautiful retirement community the likes of which people of means would pay thousands of $1.00 to $10.00 he said that they were helping to wipe out crime that Jonestown which at the time couldn't even feed its own people he said that they were alleviating the world through crisis so he really you know he basically told lies to bolster the image of Jim Jones and he did this to very powerful people and for the folks in guy and who don't know Jim Jones madam when they're getting these letters from very powerful figures in the United States saying that Jim Jones is a great guy from Willie Brown from Harvey Milk and from others you know they have to question some of these reports that they're getting how could so many people in positions of power in the United States speak so well of Jim Jones right yet you have these regular people saying you know he's doing all these rotten things put an end to this and ironically Harvey Milk is gunned down 8 days before the Guiana massacre Well 9 days afterwards he was he was gunned down correct and that was a tragedy all by itself does that have any tie and to Jim Jones No not really I mean the. The 2 victims George Moscone and Harvey Milk in Bucks County was the mayor at the time right correct you know over a petty office in San Francisco a guy by the name of the n.y.t. Who was the was a colleague of milks on the Board of Supervisors he resigned his position he was a cop and basically represented the public employees unions on the board and all of those people said hey we didn't really work for you why did you resign they convinced him to beg for his job back initially Mosconi since yes you can have your job back Harvey Milk who was probably a better politician and Mosconi said look this guy is coming out on the wrong side of too many 65 votes you can't let this guy back on the board Mosconi realizes the wisdom of that and denies white his place on the board white comes into City Hall assassinates Mosconi and then he assassinates melts White was kind of a call a protege of Dianne Feinstein on the board kind of like a centrist Democrat maybe within the context of San Francisco he was a little bit to the right and that's you know they didn't want him on the board because he wasn't voting the way the mayor wanted to enough now at the trial it's brought up that it would be perfectly legitimate for whites to bring a gun to City Hall because you know what happened with People's Temple and ultimately the jury essentially buys a lot of these specious argument and he serves about 5 years in prison for killing 2 men which is the 5th you know you get the phrase drinking the Kool-Aid with with Jonestown with this 2nd tragedy that befell San Francisco you get the Twinkie defense yes of course you know really not punished obviously for for killing 2 men he ultimately hands out the punishment that a lot of people felt the need to serve to himself when he killed himself and in 90 days prior. Just unbelievable what had been going on in San Francisco at that time why did Jim Jones get so much famous notoriety from people of you know well known prominent positions I think politically he said the things that they wanted to hear from the pulpit with Harvey Milk Jim Jones was an early supporter of gay rights and at the time you didn't have too many ministers supporting gay rights right with someone like Willie Brown Jones was a big supporter of Angela Davis and Huey Newton and so that might have been appealing to him I think namely they supported him because he provided them with with volunteers he provided them with money he provided them with with free publicity with with George Moscone there's a strong argument to be made that he doesn't become Mera San Francisco without Jim Jones Wow And at the time people complained that Jones had bussed in people from outside of San Francisco to vote and so there's so much pressure that if there's an investigation of People's Temple whether that was gone he was elected by fraud the interesting thing about that is when the district attorney assigns one of his deputies to look into this and to investigate that deputy is also Jim Jones his deputy he's a member of People's Temple in the 2nd in command of People's Temple and not surprisingly he doesn't find the temple did anything wrong that's how in with the in crowd People's Temple was in San Francisco that when it came time to investigate People's Temple it was People's Temple doing the investigation was there was there a point that Jim Jones was. I mean just a stellar citizen I mean what caused him to crack obviously he was not one when he had everybody commit suicide. Well I think he was always a bit nuts and I think that he even if you go back and look at his sermons and what he said in the sixty's. He was certainly someone who was was off kilter I spoke to a guy who was actually kidnapped as a little boy by Jim Jones from Indiana to California and in the early seventy's he went to a summer camp with the People's Temple in Oregon and there was a 4 year old boy there who found the food disgusting as a lot of 4 year old boys do and he wouldn't eat it Jones forced him to eat the food and the boy proceeded to vomit Jones forced the boy to eat is own vomit needed to vomit again and this goes on and on and on that's the kind of sadistic character just like God The interesting thing about that to me is that this boy's father is one of the gunman who kills Leo Ryan he's one of the gunman on the airstrip and so you would think an event like that would you know you'd want to take your family and run from the People's Temple but if you don't run if you stay your kind of all in at that point you are this guy slave is he is in control of you and if you will if you will stick with this guy through something like that forcing your own kid to your vomit you'll do just about anything for that person and this man did just about anything for Jones he killed for honeysuckle on the Guiana. Dionna was you know. Was run by Marxists at the time and there were a lot of people fleeing guy and they were losing population by Jones politically felt that that was a place where he could find allies the fact that in his temple most of the people were African-American and most of the people but you thirds of the people who died at Jonestown were African-American so it's in a fact a black church led by a white guy and he preached against racism but he practices very very a form of racism which your temple but he he was someone that was active politically to the Marxist leadership both Guy and I And secondly the fact that it was a state run by blacks was something that was appealing to him he had ties to South America he had gone down to Brazil and years earlier and I think he always had this dream of founding this commune base that they found Jonestown in 1073 but it really doesn't sort of pick up and from 177 that's kind of the concentration camp Jonestown that we know today just truly remarkable how he was able to pull these things off I mean just bizarre and Guiana is just so people will know geographically near Venezuela right. It is and I mean one of the interesting things if you watch John's converse with the reporter is the night before the suicide happened The began as you know where they are 10200 miles 200 miles from the equator and Johns really has the space the white skin around to a farming commune where there are active agricultural projects and Jones is as white as Casper the Ghost of this is a guy who was staying inside and is air conditioned. Cottage while people working in the fields mainly African-Americans working in the fields in the whites holding positions of leadership and so Jones who sort of preached this in anti-racism they get to Jonestown it's you know it really resembles kind of a southern plantation with this sort of white master sitting back doing the work and all of the blacks working for him in Jonestown you know it got so bad that you know he often took liberties with his followers in men and women forcing them had sex with them and just found there's a particular African American teenager that finds to his liking she's really stream with beautiful she had dated one of his sons and when he decides he maybe he wants to date or she refuses it dances he then proceeds to drug her into incoherence and has his way with her and so all this talk in the United States about him being there he won an award in San Francisco the Martin Luther King Jr humanitarian wall my God here he is here is an insult America raping a teenage black girl that had used to be a son's girlfriend that's the kind of guy Jim Jones was in yet he maintained the support of his followers see where he's you know all sorts of profanity from from the pulpit he used racial slurs from the pulpit but people still stuck by him when he finally died with these $900.00 plus people did anybody miss him. Well you know that's a place his is. In Indiana there were places that would not bury him and this was a common that's where he was born that's the state he was born in right that's the state he was born in there were this was quite common because there was a lot of shame around what happened with People's Temple and so on this weekend for instance when the temple held its commemoration they did so in Oakland now you know Gertrude Stein famously said there's no there's there in Oakland there was no there there for People's Temple they had didn't have any ties to Oakland but Oakland was the place that took in the $400.00 or so identified bodies and buried them and so that's why they're buried you know Oakland it would make sense that the ferry in San Francisco but they wouldn't take them Delaware where they nationally landed the bodies they were very eager to get them out of their places in Indiana didn't want to bury Jones other places didn't want the stigma of having the Jonestown dead in their cemeteries So this was you know this was a very you know very complicated matter in fact in 2014 there was a hold on for a 2nd down here will not go pick it up and take calls next find out more about tonight's guest log on to coast to coast am dot com.
