And welcome back Steven j. Reuben with us the Twilight Zone encyclopedia so many of these episodes Stephen we can't talk about all of them but then again I like them all but I really like the thing about machines with the character plane Bob Bartlett Finchley that was a cool one I like the one where the people went in for an operation because they wanted to change their face they thought they were ugly and they turned out being cuckoo or just but not for the people who were there at the time right where you know that a blonde was that was a Priya we need a clamp that on a dog that's right that is absolutely right now not George I have to tell you a story that maybe your your listeners might be interested in maybe you can clue me and perhaps it was my own kind of encounter with the twilights Ok Carol Serling was here and really helped me out with a lot of the research on the book providing me with access to so many different things when I went over to her house and I said you know I really want to understand a little bit more about how Rod wrote and what was his methodology what were received. Once and she said you know you should take a look at a book that was published that included all of his life screenplays and she hands me a book from Raj personal collection and it's literally a bound book you know of the scripts and just take this home with you and I look at it like really Ok for some bring it back so I come home I put it on my desk and I have to go to some dinner thing so I leave it on my death I come back 3 hours later and the book is that it's just nice nobody's broke into my house that night there was no earthquake they would bounce it into a trash can and a housekeeper got rid of it that was 4 and a half years ago and I still haven't found that book and storing reaching out and then a strange story to go who took it nobody came into the house there's no evidence of a break and there was nothing and you know everybody's had experiences losing stuff ever and we have it every day like he has you but your keys on the counter they're gone when you come back in the right there. Well I've heard even more strange stories where a guy couldn't find any of the remotes in his house literally every single remote everyday appliance in his house was missing and he walks by his bedroom door and there on the bedroom bad are all there all stacked up like something out of pull together it's it's really it's almost as if there's this other dimension out there Steve where they cross over play games with us or whatever and then they put things back in order well every so often I stand in the middle of my office and I say Can I please have my book back have my show up one day I will freak out if it's there tomorrow morning well I'm so glad it was an autograph because I was able to go on e Bay and I found the exact same book for $100.00 and I got it backwards or I think was fine but a strange story remember the fever the but the guy hooked on the he was opposed to gambling it but he got hooked on it and it destroyed him all right with those talking slot machines that for each Yeah now Franklin Franklin Well that was the other thing about anthology because that was an anthology show you literally didn't know what the Get It was like potluck every week when we could have a western then you'd have a war movie then you'd have a comedy it was it was it was an amazing form now interestingly I haven't watched all of the episodes but there's a lot of talk about this British series Black Mirror Have you heard about it I've heard about it I haven't seen it either yeah I've seen some episodes they're very good and they're very well produced and they're very much inspired by Serling because they have tackled subjects of our daily existence with a world gone crazy and I think that you know the networks of all it's been kind of anti anthology because they feel that people will want to come to see the same characters each week so they get into this mode and I think it's unfortunate because the end solve them volage e. Series of history of always been a wonderful did in one step beyond follow Twilight Zone and as that aired on a.b.c. At the time I want to say it was a. Little bit earlier 1st episode was 59 Ok so then it was to the Contemporary and then Hitchcock was on that time of course and then you had science fiction theater a little earlier yes that was a science fiction theater may have been the 1st yeah I remember my father used to watch a need bring me down and they did things on us full range phenomena it was a great show it was like your show in the fifty's exactly exactly let's take some calls here for you as they line up let's go to Ed in Tulsa Oklahoma on the wild card line Edward go ahead there's a let me turn is radioed in yeah guys I've got the complete Twilight Zone collection I've had it now for 5 years I so I recycle once a month every month back and forth between Leave It to Beaver and Twilight Zone episode and if you look at Ross Sterling's history he was always a combat veteran during the war I think arena I'm not sure you guys and correct me on ever wrong no it was it was World War 2 Philippines that's what I was thinking good now he wrote several episodes of Twilight Zone episode during the war now there was one episode in particular where the comma soldiers 1945 August of 45 the war was winding down there was a cable a Japanese soldiers beat that they were hungry they were starving they were sick and they were debating whether to go ahead and hit the cave or not and kill these guys right this new commander comes on the scene the last day to go home and us to go in and get him right what happens all of a sudden the roll reverses. That American captain that want to be go and get a few notches on his belt found himself a Japanese soldier trying to talk the Japanese commander out of attacking at Capel of American soldiers ever done. It all in a theater so fast it's called the quality of mercy and Dean Stockwell who was a young actor at that time and been actually a child actor and he still seems like he's a child actor the guy's ageless I know I now he is and he's. He's wonderful Not episode a kind of a. Walk in the other guy's shoes episode a very airy and very well done and also on that episode also featured a young actor named Leonard Nimoy Wow So he jump started Leonard's career Yeah Leonard got one of his 1st was a letter to been in character parts of 150 so I always remember him and one of my favorite science fiction films of the 1950 s. Them about that the giant and the ass because of atomic follow exactly and Leonard's has a very small part in the Washington segment of that of that movie yeah Leonard was great and also Albert Salmi was in that episode actually should I should mention that he was and 3 episodes he was also in that same episode of quality of mercy did Rod Serling jump start William Shatner's career because he was in a couple episodes to. I think that. It's Shatner's to episode nightmare to absolute nightmare and at 20000 feet and the nick of time are 2 of the of the best episodes of the series I would put them in my top 10 classic and the classics and because they're so good and he's so good in it I think he was just you know he's probably. 34 years away from Captain Kirk and yeah I believe that those 2 episodes were showcases for what Bill Shatner could bring I'd like to stop it will be where the guy fell asleep on the train and he was up and that's that's kind Daley's Dad That's James Daly It's just one of them my favorite episodes that so poignant because everybody has a Willoughby they want to go back to and it actually reflected Rod's own feeling about his hometown of Binghamton New York you know he grew up in Binghamton I think he was born in Syracuse grew up in Binghamton and that was that little small town with the central green with the kids Ebo in the band playing in the wintertime when it's summer time and I think those episodes have the most time was quality about them Carol was born in 1989 rods wife and she said she'd gone strong how she doing. She's doing Ok And you know I just talked through the other day and she's such a great you know protector of the Rod Serling legacy and just has always been a wonderful person for me I actually got a chance to do a kind of a little experimental film once I wanted to remake an episode I was very fond of called The 7th is made up of Phantoms about a modern tank crew on maneuvers in Montana that goes through a war and ends up at Custer's last stand and it's just such an interesting piece and I actually ended up making I got the Marines to cooperate we shot the cap Pelton just an experimental film I never showed it and she was very complimentary and it helped me get the rights to do the Rod Serling biopic which and fortune wanted to turn around but she's of received a sweetheart hard to believe Rod died 42 years ago. Scary how 50 has not helped by all that smoking but of course back in the fifty's everybody small they all still and a lot it was just it was kind of part of his architecture Did he smoke on the on the shelf Yeah I thought I remember that he'd come out with a cigarette almost every episode right yeah I mean imagine today anybody smoking within 5 miles of a t.v. Show it's like you know. It's you know what it what it was an era you know where smoking was just part of it and they didn't know and then when they didn't know they couldn't quit because they were addicted let's go to Renee in Marvis to California 1st time Caller Hi Renee go ahead well Mr Coglan right between Camp and lies I will. You know what this is this is for in me Aubrey. In No kidding I think as this is really you were and I this is really bring me a cool is that on yes I'm calling to support Stephen. How many episodes were you when Renee I was just didn't want I was just starting and he gave me an opportunity I was too young when they started and when I went to an adult agency that's when I finally got him on his shows but then he waited for me to grow up I was in the 5th season and did it help your career after that not really because the show was kind of taken off the air because there was a dispute as to whether or not this was in the original by Rod Serling and of course. I was a little bit upset about it needless to say and so I called Rod and I asked him Where is this oh I'm not getting any residuals He says it's in my closet but that's Ok What is it doing in your glass. Isaac he says well you can come and check it out any time. And so it is that that's what I think do it and I think there was a lawsuit then it gets as if the episode from being shallow or Renee was in an episode called sounds and silences that say it's John McGuire that wonderful kind of stuffy character actor who played all these pompous when bags high who is a model ship. Tycoon and he treats everybody as if he's on a ship in fact his office his home is built like it's on the ship and he's a bit obsessive and crazy drives everybody in the office including Mrs Abernathy played by Renee Knotts with his all of his craziness and of course that just like you know a thing about machines when the machines rebel now it sounds that come back to haunt him there are a number of episodes by the way that didn't make the syndication package at 1st for some legal reasons Renee's episode was one then there was the episode encounter with George to take and Neville brand which was a strange story of a Japanese American Gardener who comes up to visit Neville Brander's this u.s. Marine veteran who has a Japanese samurai sword he took off a dead officer and it's a possessed sword and there's one dialogue line and not in that episode where they say that George's father helped guide the planes to attack Pearl Harbor which was actually not true there was no evidence that Japanese Americans ever did anything anti-American particularly with Pearl Harbor so they were afraid of setting the Japanese American community so the showing around once that's amazing Renee thanks for calling appreciate that how cool is that Steve that was pretty good so we've had 2 veterans on tonight that's pretty amazing I've got Robert Redford on the line to say oh no I'm just kidding. Let's go to Walton Pennsylvania welcome to the show he Walter Hi George it's great to be on with you once again thanks Walt. Dr you want to thank your guest Mr Rubin for bringing back the memories and that was telling how much you and I are are members of the old Howdy Doody thana gallery we sure are a little to remember that a Mickey Mouse Club Yeah. Well yeah we're talking about you were mentioning that there's supposedly this curse of Bob the actors meeting their demise that we're part of the Twilight Zone Now one of my favorite actors another one and I think it was one of the most under-rated actors of all time was that morrow he did he ended up dying in one of the movie in the movie from a helicopter crash or something didn't he has Yeah they were a supporter of Twilight Zone the movie that movie after Mr Schilling that diagnosis I think was in 79. And not a retread very tragic story I mean basically they were filming as as you know there are 4 episodes made for the movie Twilight Zone the movie and the 1st one was an original John Landis was the director and it basically called for Vic to play a bigot who goes through kind of a Twilight Zone transformation where he's all of a sudden he's a black man in Mississippi in the in the 1930 s. And then he's a Jew in France during occupied France and then he ends up in Vietnam where he has a little bit of a mia culpa where he saves 2 Vietnamese kids and there's a scene where he's crossing a river under fire and he's trying to rescue these kids and the helicopter ended up crashing on top of him killing him and the 2 kids and it was a horrifying refine our he got decapitated in this thing he was the capitated and that scene a horse was edited out of the actual. Show I hope it's very tragic and I agree with you Vic Morrow was one of our most marvelously adept actors I was a huge fan of combat and I actually tried to develop that into another film years ago and yet was a horrible tragedy and of course John Landis is a career as never recovered from that and it was an unfortunate accident t.v. Seems to be going through a bad amorphous as now especially with digital and social networking and everything that is happening with cable the advent of you know in those days we had the 3 networks that was it now we've got everything would the Twilight Zone survive today with all these different outlets. Well what's interesting is I picked up the paper this morning and c.b.s. During their quarterly. Financial conference announced that they are going to revive the show in for their all access network the same xor of the network that's hosting Star Trek and so there and you know who they brought in to be the lead guy they said in the article is Jordan Peele who is the director of that show this year the get out that movie that was a huge hit and you know get out is almost like a Twilight Zone episode I love Jordan creativity I'll tell you one thing I'm concerned about and I guess it's nothing that we can really fight city hall about is that it's probably going to be in color and I think that the hallmark of the Twilight Zone in many ways was the black and white quality of the episodes yes in an ad that you know when it when we went to the next evolution we went to night gallery right. We're right and which was in color and having everybody thinks that's Raj and Rod was a hired gun on that show that was Jack Laird show right he didn't have much input there he did not like the Twilight Zone and the quality was very iffy I mean there were some great episodes many of which Rob wrote but the quality was not great knowing b. Because everybody thought that he was attached to what they thought hey this is great we're going to see this again and you know everybody was all excited about color television I remember when my father 1st bought one and you could see a grainy green in yellow. And we're looking at it going this is it remember remember the n.b.c. Peacock when it said before the show the next program is broadcast in living color that's right Joe in Boston walk into the program Hi Joseph joy Howie great type this is unusual. And we are back with our final segment with Stephen a reuben in the Twilight Zone encyclopedia Stephen we had only lasted 5 seasons why did it continue where the ratings batter what was going on that the ratings were never good and that's part of the reason that Rod Serling had to start going on the air to plug it you know he had he had to do some of the promos and. Talk shows or whatever top shows and anything he could do to give it a higher profile I went into the override ease and Hollywood reporters and it was rarely mentioned and I went through them for 5 years there was very rarely mentioned in ratings or a few episodes that did well the other thing was that rod it written so many episodes 92 out of 156 that he was exhausted you know and when the show was canceled after the 3rd season on he went off to teach and I think that what happened was. C.b.s. Brought in a show called fair exchange which did not live up to its name it was a terrible show and it went off the air and James Zogby the head of c.b.s. Had to come hat in hand rod and say Would you please bring another you know number of episodes and please make them ours so that that's when they did the 181 hour episodes Ok Once they used to be 30 s. That's right right actually 22 minutes when you take out commercial time Exactly exactly and and then in the 5th season they went back to 230 minutes again but I think that it had achieved its purpose I think Rod was exhausted and without the prime mover really backing the show he was ready to let it die and I think that that's what she got I mean he tried to sell another show. Call which is warlocks and ghosts a.b.c. And they didn't want it and then Rod's next the next series was a western series with Lloyd Bridges which was not a shoot em up Rod wanted to do more of an intellectual Western and that didn't fly either they didn't want that that's it's amazing the kind of work he did Mark secreted oldest that he would write most of them by dictating into a Dictaphone while floating in a pool. Yeah I mean and when any who just reenact all the pieces into his dictaphone Yeah on the way that the secretary just I like what I would kill to hear those dictaphones today unfortunately in those days they just recycled them so all of that play acting is lost to history but you know that this show occupation of occupied a very unique time and it just came to its And it you know it even know it was just 5 seasons it was still 156 episodes in those days they didn't do 10 episodes or 12 or 22 they did 35 and 38 episodes. You know I'd like to also the episode where. The couple had a camera and whatever they took a picture of it showed the future so they could take a picture of the tote board at a horse race track and you telling me no horses out there in the odds and stuff. And I'm not that say what the ending was but that was fun I like that the Burgess Meredith one that was fun when he broke his glasses and he could read us watch last night we had a little gathering I'm here in Pennsylvania and we did it on gather in a private home and we showed the time enough at last and it's always wrenching when he. Breaks his glasses. To Burgess Meredith it's not nice as not nice but he did 4 episodes he was one of the broads go to guys with Jack Klugman That's right let's go to the phones again Joe in Long Island New York east of the Rockies just off the head Hi Stephen 2 questions Do you think at the time with the 3 networks that the Twilight Zone was sent as stick for the deal was with like Lost In Space The Time Tunnel land of the giants and what was there is or is there like a sad club days similar Not quite similar to the Trek is but along those lines. Well I think you'll find to answer your 2nd question 1st that the Twilight Zone is very very multi-generational I think that. I think it reaches out to everybody in an even teenagers today who generally have learned chick to black and white will watch the show because they respect that I think that that's why it has a timeless quality I think it would be safe to say now that 100 years from now people will still be watching the Twilight Saga The other thing about that synergistic I think it was the 1st episode to give adult sensibilities to science fiction you got to read recognize the world of the late fifty's science fiction was not a respected genre it was considered and kind of derogatory terms as kind of something for the kiddies that's why you had the Saturday morning shows like Rocky Jones and and they really Superman. I think it led the way it gave the networks the courage to put science fiction in prime time to give the gods in it's interesting to how the genre all seems to flow together in the networks when either get comedies dramas westerns but but whatever was hot for that moment they all did it. Yeah I mean they're still doing it I mean they're they're still doing it I think that. It's you know there are trends I mean that's that television is kind of an interesting quandary because yes you have your typical cop shows lawyer shows Dr shows and then there's always like a little. You know a show that's thrown in that just throws everybody off a little bit and it's very much inspired by Serling I think Serling I think is one of his big contributions to the history of of media is the fact a lecture and magination go don't put any restraints on your imagination there are no such thing as restraints when it comes to doing something imaginative and every single right you know one of the biggest twilights on fans is j.j. Abrams who's directing Star Wars and Star Trek and did that t.v. Series last he really respects the Twilight Zone and actually did an episode of felicity in black and white like a Twilight Zone episode. So when people like j.j. Abrams somebody in their forty's is doing is to in twilight sometimes you know where he gets it and I think it's multi-generational that's stopped Let's go to Jack in San Diego California hi Jack go ahead well you know this is so interesting I'm 68 I grew up watching The Twilight Zone and I I really appreciate Rod Serling he was very important figure in paranormal entertainment and I was lucky enough to make a career in the motion picture business. I remember what happened when they were filming that movie Twilight Zone the movie with the moral case I had friends that were on the set that night and they were at a location called Indian dunes which was up by Magic Mountain in the scandal was that the public knew about was that the children weren't supposed to be working that late they violated the child labor laws and there was a huge court trial over that but the behind the scenes scandal was the open drug use on the set and they felt that that contributed to the accident but I could also appreciate the casting in twilight zone so many players went on to big major motion picture and t.v. Stars and there was one episode that had 2 up and coming stars and it was Charles Bronson analyst of us Montgomery who later played be witched and I believe they were on opposing sides and they and it was the aftermath of a nuclear war. Exactly it's an episode called 2 and it was very well favored and Elizabeth Montgomery actually played a Russian Army officer and Charles Bronson was an American and they need in this bombed out New York City and very very interesting episode I think it was the 1st episode I believe of the 3rd season and Bronson was very relatively new to the business he had been in The Magnificent 7 and I think he was in The Great Escape of shooting right after this and Elizabeth Montgomery was just a hop skip and jump away from playing Samantha on Bewitched How did he come up with all the various topics. I mean how prolific was he if this is the guy who probably you know again you know you have writers who are very creative coming up with things but Rod working on an anthology show just looked around his his office and read the newspapers there's an article in the newspaper one morning where he read that a b. 24 Liberator bomber had been found in the desert of Libya no evidence of its crew but the bomber was intact uncovered by a sandstorm all of a sudden he came up with the episode called King 9 will not return with Bob Cummings playing the lead Cummings known mostly for doing comedy shows with some dramatic roles and now is a very cool stuff and then I'm sure that he was looking around his room one day it was like to make model airplanes his office was a little filled with these planes and I'm sure he looked up at his shelf and as an old French Newport rolled war one plane which probably was sitting next to some jet and he said what a lot of foot of a b. Of an old French Newport landed in an airforce base and that became the episode. Nom for getting its number but it's on its it up it's called Little to call the last flight and it's about a world war one fighter pilot who lands in a modern us Air Force jet base these are just this examples of his mind going in 20 different directions I love the one with the pilots were flying over New York I think they were looking for Laguardia and they saw our boat rock to shore us dinosaur they were traveling there's there's your time travel story again absolutely went back in the end they couldn't they couldn't land there was there was no airport. There was no airport and then they go back through the warp again and they find they are poor but if 93930 s. In New York they never heard of a jet aircraft a love that kind of stuff that's an episode of The Odyssey of Flight 33 and the cockpit dialogue was so accurate that he was complimented but he had that was helped by his brother Robert Serling was an aviation writer for u.p.i. And he contacted a t.w.a. Pilot and they got the cockpit chatter accurate so they know what vectors and what not all that kind of stuff was let's go to Linda in Ashland Oregon Welcome to the show Hi Linda go ahead. Yes Hi Steven hi Dorothy Height was a question about the hitchhiker going my way yes how did she die otherly Adelaide guy because she doesn't know she's dead until she calls her mother and find out a mother was in the hospital and does another lady talking to her well she she everybody who hasn't seen the hitchhiker please close your ears right now because we're going about to give you a spoiler but basically. In your Stephen's character was killed in a traffic accident and that's basically a ghost that we're seeing in that episode that's right I didn't like that show I mean I didn't like it in terms of the scariness of it. It's a creepy one though anyway it freaks me out Yeah well that's the other thing about The Twilight Zone or episodes that gave you nightmares I mean he'd look in the window going my way yeah yeah I mean. I'll tell you I was a very impressionable 8 year old who lived across the street from a movie theater and went to the movies every weekend and saw every science fiction fantasy horror movie and I guess I was an only child I was freaked out everywhere and you remember the Mysterians I stood in line at the pick with Peter in West l.a. And 3 that movie absolutely used to love those and you know and the Atomic Bomb influenced a lot of Japanese films I'm sure a lot of course now Godzilla them and Iraq's all that stuff by the way I mean Rod was it for ratios filmgoer going all the way back to the thirty's I mean he saw King Kong 1st Ronnie saw the Wolf Man Frankenstein and then the fifty's he saw the Incredible Shrinking Man I mean he met Matheson and he knew him but he knew he was for racialists collector of stories and information and and you know I think that. I wish we had had more writers to help him and kind of pay some a little bit because he was just how he cranked out 92 episodes I have no idea you ran him selfe into the ground Yeah yeah exactly. Jim and Sammy go ahead I was just going to mention the will at the end will mention where I'm going to be signing it yeah let's do that now Ok So Monday night 6 pm I'll be in New York City at the Barnes and Noble on Warren Street that's in the tri Beckett district and I'll be there at 6. And then Friday the 10th I will be in Boston at the Prudential Center downtown again the Barnes and Noble at $530.00 and then we go over to Chicago on Monday the 13th which I believe is Veterans Day and I'm at the volumes book cafe at 7 pm All right great people what you don't have a website do you. Don't but I've been doing a heavy amount of activity on Facebook so people should go on my Facebook page which is called The Twilight Zone encyclopedia and see that every day I do a blog post this day in Twilight Zone history which the Saif I channel has picked up as well on their website and I also post on Linked In and I'm in the process of building a website Cino What do you think of television today compared to back in the sixty's. Well I think we're going through another golden age I was actually a little chill much George because I have trouble keeping track of all the shows and d.v.r. And then when I find a show I can't remember which show I watched already and there are too many channels I think too many chances too many shows I think was pointed out last year there were $400.00 television series and I think that we're reaching a saturation point but we're just beginning because other networks are coming on board we're talking about Apple developing a television network you're talking about Facebook developing a television I mean Amazon spending a lot of money for t.v. Programs and movies now I'm not a turnaround today that there's might be a Lord of the Rings' television series I mean he's pretty amazing I think it's kind of fun because there's something for everybody. You know television is still very much important part of our lives lot of us are watching it on little screens on the subway or wherever you watch it there's always something good to our it's there it's every you got it Stephen thanks for being on the program and good luck with the Twilight Zone encyclopedia up next on live find out more about tonight's guest to coast to coast am dot com.
