For the first time in nearly 17 years since the columbine shootings in 1999, we are hearing from one of the shooters parents. Sue klebold opened up to Dianne Sawyer last night. At times she broke down about her son dylan and even more for his victims. Denver 7 investigator tony spoke to Dianne Sawyer about she ttlks about the shame. She talks about fear. Reporter they were answers for nearly 17 years. Has sue klebold accepted any responsibility for what happened on that april day in 1999 . I think she has gone back over her life she says and tried to look at what she missed. Reporter the events of april 20th, 1999 changed the life of students, teachers, parents at columbine. I realize these are kids. These are kids in high school. And what in the world is going on here . Reporter denver 7 john was the first to arrive at columbine. The initial call was a drive by shooting. In the investigations that followed, we learned that eric harris and dylan lebold had planted bombs and attempted to blow up the school and kill they hated everybody and said they all deserved to die. Reporter he was one of a half dozen reporters who watched home video tapes made by harris and klebold. what is very clear from these tapes is that these two guys were in this togethhr. This was a meticulously planned attack to kill as many people as possible. It was horrible to see those tapes. I remember at one point standing up because i thought i was going to be ill. Reporter during the inteeview sue klebold talked about missing signs in the days and months before the shooting. Proceeds from her upcoming book will all go to mental hhalth and some parents have voiced concerns that the kleeolds are using Mental Health issues to deflect responsibility. I couldnt believe that someone like dylan could intentionally hurt other people. It was inconceivable. Reporter how does miss i think she says they were killers. And one of the things we are examining is how does someene go from a Mental Health issue to violence to homicide. Reporter before the interview denver 7 met with and reached out to all the victims families offering an opportunity to comment on klebolds statements about her decision to now come forward. Some told us they were not going to watch the interview. And others respectfully declined any comment about this time. I think the families are thinking, you know what, you dont know the story. We know the story. Were living with the story. I just want the families to know that we are going to be reaching out to them again and we truly want to hear what they say after tonight. Unbelievable interview with sue klebold. People still asking a lot of questions. So it answered some and in addition to the 13 livee lost in the shooting another 24 students were injured that day. Casey johnson. She wanted to see what sue klebold had to say because all of these years later she still has those questions. Lindsay is live with her story. Reporter Casey Johnson survived being shot in the arm school. 17 years later after she sat down to watch the nterview with sue klebold, these are the questions she still has. Do you feel like you missed something . Were you involved . Reporter and johnson was in the lunchroom thattday at columbine. She said the shooters showed no mercy. They yelled at her after eyes and played dead to try to survive. Johnson spends a lot of timesharing her story and speaking to group about tissue donation which is what helped she says she is focused on her own four children, protecting them, being grateful toothem. And as for the shooters parents she says she would be willing to sit down with them. I dont have angry feelings toward the parents. I dont think that any parent raises their child to be a murder. Reporter and weve also heard from another columbine survivor who was left paralyzed by the attacks. She wrote a letter to sue as well. It reads in part. I have no ill will toward you just as i wouldnt want to be judged by the sins of my family members, i hold you in that same regard. You can see the letter the klebolds wrote to her following the attacks. Thank you. Also on our website we have much more coverage of sue klebolds interview.
